  1. Let Me Do My Thing (3:24)
  2. Let Me Do My Thing (Voodoocuts edit) (4:20)
Review: According to the South American music specialists at Matasuna Records, Ralph Weeks' 1971 single "Let Me Do My Thing" - recorded alongside backing Los Dinamicos Exciters - is arguably the most sought-after Panamanian soul record around. As this reissue proves, Weeks' original version is rubbery, heavy and rousing, with the singer's rasping lead vocal soaring above a weighty backing track that sounds like a breezier take on the New York boogaloo sound. On the flip, Voodoocuts tools it up for modern dancefloors, underpinning his club-ready edit with punchy new drums that give the cut more of a breakbeat style swing.

Funky/Club House
  1. Rain (Danny Krivit 7" edit) (5:19)
  2. Rain (Atjazz remix - Danny Krivit 7" edit) (5:32)
Review: There are a lot of much-loved Kerri Chandler records, but it would be fair to say that 1998's "Rain" - originally tucked away on the flipside of "The Mood EP" - is one of the most celebrated. Here it gets given the re-edit treatment by arguably the world's most celebrated editor, Danny Krivit. The veteran New Yorker gets busy with the original version on the A-side, focusing on the soulful, improvised vocals, tasty minor key melodies, skipping drums and warm, rich synth bassline. Over on the flip, Krivit turns his attention to Atjazz's later remix, which re-imagines the track as a breezy chunk of Latin house rich in live pianos, bossa-driven beats, hissing cymbals and some choice vocal snippets.

Funk
  1. Stax Dawg (2:13)
  2. Love Book (2:33)
  3. Funky Jive (3:03)
Review: A welcome return to action for Stank Soul scalpel fiends Mako and Mr Bristow, whose last collaborative re-edit release dropped back in 2017. This time round they offer up a slimmed down seven-inch selection boasting two hot-to-trot revisions. On the A-side you'll find "Stax Dawg", a loving tribute to the legendary US label that sees the pair wrap 1960s horns, vocals and instrumentation around their own rubbery, floor-friendly groove. "Love Book", meanwhile, is arguably even better: a low-down revision of a horn-heavy funk-rock affair rich in addictive guitar riffs, bustling drums, heavy horns and gravelly blues style vocals. They round things off via flipside "Funky Jive", a tooled-up version of rhythm and blues standard "Willie and the Hand Jive" that should have everyone singing along in the club.

  1. I'm A Good Woman (2:24)
  2. I Don't Want A Playboy (2:07)
Review: Longstanding reissue kings Soul Brother flex back to this powerful double A last issued by Cultures Of Soul in 2010. Two of Barbara Lynn's fieriest soul sessions, both released on Tribe in '66/'67 respectively, there's a strong northern stomp to proceedings on both sides. "I'm A Good Woman" is characterised by the driving kicks, tight horns and Lynn's urgent vocals while "I Don't Want A Playboy" comes with more of a traditional soul swing. Sleep on this and, in the words of Babs herself, you'll lose a good thing.

Soul
  1. Footsteps In The Dark (Parts 1 & 2) (5:04)
  2. Between The Sheets (4:53)
Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Immortalised, slowed down funk from The Isley Brothers, an American R&B/soul group from Cincinnati, Ohio, established in the early 1950s. This 7" houses the much loved and often sampled in the hip hop world, "Footsteps In The Dark" (Parts 1 & 2) and "Between The Sheets". The latter is a silky smooth R&B classic whilst the arguably more well-known "Footsteps In The Dark" is an arrestingly beautiful, hood classic/soul masterpiece. The bassy but laid-back harmonious ballad with delicious percussion and Ronald Isley crooning an uneasy lyric on maintaining "a love that lasted for so long" amid the constant temptation of infidelity, makes it worth the entry price on its own.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
  1. Derrick Carter - "Squaredancing" (DC Nu Vox dub) (4:59)
  2. George Alexander - "Promised Land" (feat Big John Whitfield) (3:23)
Review: This tasty release is the first instalment of BBE and Soul Clap member Eli "Bamboozle" Goldstein's "House On 45" series. The basic idea is to offer up rare and hard to find house cuts that have only ever been released on seven-inch singles. To kick things off, Goldstein has selected Derrick Carter's 2017 "DC Nu Vox Dub" of his 2002 classic "Squaredancing In A Roundhouse", an insatiable version of a killer cut rich in bluesy samples, bumpin' beats and scat vocals. Equally as impressive is George Alexander and Big John Whitfield's 2009 cover of Joe Smooth classic "Promised Land", a warm and musically expansive affair that adds superb new flute and electric piano parts to one of house music's most celebrated songs.

Funk
  1. Good Edits (part 1) (4:34)
  2. Good Edits (part 2) (4:08)
Review: More from top-drawer rework merchant DJ Soopasoul, whose cheeky revisions on his Soopastole label are consistently on point and dancefloor-focused. For his latest trick, the long-serving DJ/producer has decided to apply his magic to one of the greatest disco records of all time and a "foundation record" of the hip-hop scene: Chic classic "Good Times". The A-side edit sounds like it has been created using the multi-track parts, as dubbed-out vocal sections ride stripped-back grooves and portions that variously showcase the track's original strings, Nile Rodgers' guitars and Bernard Edwards' killer bassline. The flipside "Part 2" version is similarly minded but more like a disco dub in feel and execution, with the maestro drenching vocal sections in delicious amounts of delay.

Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Good ole' foot stomping and hand clapping - this true Tony Humphries, Southport and soul collectors favourite finally gets a full single release. "Looking For You" is massive crossover hit from 2005 by American Gospel star Kirk Franklin, who marries Patrice Rushen's "Haven't You Heard" with R&B and hip-hop to produce an uplifting, inspiring and infectious feel good classic. Franklin pilots his ensemble through a joyful song that will have you tapping your feet and clapping your hands in no time - and if put the lyrics and sermon aside, this could be superb dance music, too.

  1. Golden Rule (4:53)
  2. Okan Ti Aye (4:27)
Review: For the latest missive on their excellent Jazz45 sub-label, Jazzman has decided to offer up two sought-after catalogue cuts from contemporary spiritual jazz maestro Muriel Grossmann, a sax player, singer and composer who already has a swathe of quality albums to her name. First up is an edited version of 2018 cut "Golden Rule", a wonderfully breezy and out-there affair that sees Grossmann add mind-altering sax solos to a heavily percussive, off-kilter backing track rich in jaunty pianos and slick double bass. On flipside "Okan Ti Aye" she layers up the drums and cymbals further while offering bolder, heavier sax motifs. The result is a track of rare drive and intensity.

  2. Theme From "The Movietown Sound" (2:20)
Review: A one off private press from '72 from a mysterious band with no background or backstory; this funk soul doublet from the awesomely titled Scorpio & His People first reared its super-rare head in 2012 after original copies apparently fetched nearly 4000 quid. Raw, warm and driving, both sides cut it with the band glued tightly together and a soaring female. "The Unforgiving" is more straight up funk with some popping fills and gusty vocals while "Theme From 'The Movietown Sound'" comes with more of a smoky swagger, brazen pianos and a stunning break that screams 'sample me' louder than the OG price tag.

Review: Mukatsuku's long running "Afro Funk & Disco Gems" series has always been a reliable source of obscure, high-quality dancefloor material from the African continent. This tenth edition is another must-have - on the A-side you'll find the synth-laden, boogie-era sunshine of "Everybody Dance", one of the undisputed highlights of Peter Yamson's in-demand (and notably hard to find) "Son Of Africa" LP. With wonderful vocals, glistening guitars, lolloping drum machine beats and some stellar synth work, the track ticks all the right boxes. Over on the flip there's a chance to own Cameroon legend Tala Andre Marie's 1981 classic "Get Up Tchamassi", whose snaking sax lines, elastic slap bass and dreamy chords are nothing less than sensational. As played by The Allergies,Smoov,Kalita, Faze Action,DJ Moar etc

Review: Mukatsuku's ongoing "Afro Series" continues with a fine limited edition 45 containing two funk-fuelled floor-fillers. In fact, you'll struggle to find a more celebratory and life-affirming workout than Eko's "M'Ongele M'Am" licensed from Nubiphone & Africa Seven, a Makossa-fired Afro-disco gem rich in punchy horns, driving Afro-boogie bass, lilting synthesizer lines, Mariachi style trumpet solos and the kind of chant-along vocals that should put a smile on the face of even the most miserable of dancers. Over on side B, Georges Ouedraogo's "Deni" is an essential Clavinet-happy killer chunk of Afro-funk/Afro-Disco fusion from Burkina Faso. 1. Got To Get Your Own (7" edit) (3:18)
  2. Tight Money (3:45)
Review: For their latest on-point reissue, the Dynamite Cuts crew has raided the bulging back catalogue of soul organist Reuben Wilson. Or, to be more specific, the Cadet-released 1975 set "Got To Get Your Own". Sadly, there's not enough space for the full version of the album's celebrated title track, so Dynamite Cuts has prompted for the no less essential seven-inch edit instead. It remains a stone cold killer that no soul or funk DJ should be without, even in its shortened form. The lesser-known "Tight Money" is no less essential - or heavy, for that matter - with Wilson and pals strutting through a heavyweight Blaxploitation funk cut whose lyrics riff on poverty and Black America's mid-'70s financial crisis.

  2. Bad Bascomb - "Black Grass" (3:16)
Review: More from the matter-or-fact Breaks & Beats seven-inch series, which offers up DJ-friendly "slight edits" of funk, soul and disco classics built around extending the drum breaks in sometimes hard-to-mix classic cuts. The tenth volume in the series kicks off with a mix-friendly tweak of Vaughan Mason's roller-boogie anthem "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll" that expertly stretches out the previously all-too-short instrumental intro. Over on side B, Bad Bascomb's odd but brilliant country-funk hoedown "Black Grass" gets a similar treatment, with Breaks & Beats' un-named re-editor sneakily extending sweaty drum breaks here and there throughout the track. Given the quality of those breaks, this is a very good thing indeed.

Equal parts groovy, dreamy, organically introspective and futuristic, "Inspiration Information" is the document of a young man who owns his inspired vision completely. Review: To mark the label's 50th release, the team behind Names You Can Trust has snagged a fresh cut from the band that started it all back in 2007, Greenwood Rhythm Coalition. Fittingly, it also happens to the Afro-Caribbean-Latin-Funk fusionists' first single of any sort for nigh on five years. "Jewels" is delightfully hard to pigeonhole: a suitably tropical excursion that giddily melds elements of tropical disco, dub, cumbia, funk, soul and Afrobeat into something warm, addictive and floor-friendly. It's lopped into two parts on this seven-inch release, with the second being notably more percussive and heavy than the already weighty A-side.

Separated into two parts for the seven-inch release, the track blends the Polyversal Souls' lolloping, late '60s style Afro-funk grooves - complete with fuzzy, period style production - and sharp horn section with glistening guitars, snaking solos and fine vocals from the Bolga All Stars. It's one of the Polyversal Souls' finest releases yet, and that's saying something.

"The World Is Yours" is a take on the Nas classic which originally (in this version) came out in 2002 on the Omniverse label. The flipside "It's Simple" turned up on the Dirty Old Hip-Hop album for BBE four years later. The Omniverse label was highly collectable at the time, so this will be a welcome release for those who missed the original 45 or just love the 7 inch format. Both tracks are a sweet hip-hop tinged instrumental ride with nice keys and jazzy vibes. Hot!

Review: Astonishingly, Boogaloo's re-make of Pharoah Sanders classic "You've Gotta Have Freedom" is now 24 years old. It was originally included on the B-side of the jazz-loving Swedish hip-hop outfit's 1995 EP "Humongous Steps (Back Down To London)", but arguably became more widely known when it was reissued by G.A.M.M. on 12" in 2003. Here it appears on 7" for the first time, with the band's vocal version - a positive, life-affirming delight that brilliantly flits between sections faithful to Sanders' version and rapped section underpinned by live hip-hop breaks - being accompanied by an equally impressive instrumental take. If it's not already in your collection, this edition should be an essential purchase.

Know What I Mean (Record Store Day 2019)
Cat: 510131 P. Rel: 24 Apr 19
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Know What I Mean (2:47)
  2. Why Don't You Do Right? (2:09)
Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** Although arguably best-known for her portrayal of communications officer, Lieutenant Nyota Uhura on the original sci-fi television program Star Trek, Nichelle Nichols is likewise a formidable vocalist who also garnered a solo spot during a brief stint with Duke Ellington & His Orchestra. This 7" houses two infectious, vintage soul numbers - "Know What I Mean" and "Why Don't You Do It Right?" - and they sound as sweet as they did over 50 years ago. A valuable collectible for Soul, Northern fans as well as any true Trekkie.

  1. James Brown - "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" (DJP edit) (3:44)
  2. Eddie Floyd - "Knock On Wood" (DJP edit) (3:59)
Review: Flipping heck! Soul Flip invite everyone's favourite big glasses wearing editor DJP to the fold for some twists on two seminal, genre-affirming party joints. James Brown's "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" gets a cheeky beat facelift with a fresh set of peppy breaks while Eddie Floyd's tree chopping sing-along enjoys a similar mix-friendly shake-up with a slower, roomier drum arrangement ensuring all the power of the '67 original is kept in check. Flip some switches.
