Review: The Hartnoll Brothers have decided to remaster and reissue their eponymous 1991 debut album - frequently referred to as 'The Green' album for obvious reasons. Amongst the numerous editions is this delicious box set, which compliments the fantastic original album (stretched across two slabs of wax), with a slipmat, a 60-page hardback book of photos and fresh liner notes, and an additional double-album of rarities and unreleased cuts from the period. It's this latter item, which includes B-sides, non-album singles (hello 'Satan') and sought-after remixes (Sasha's legendary version of 'Midnight' and the barely known 'Rhyme and Reason' take on 'Satan'), which makes the box set so alluring to fans. Basically, it's the ultimate edition of a British dance classic.

Notes: When the classic MS-20 analog synthesizer appeared in 1978, it had a trusted partner in the SQ-10 step sequencer. Now, after thirty years, the MS-20 has been reborn as the MS-20 mini, and the SQ-10 has evolved into the more modern SQ-1.

The SQ-1 is a compact step sequencer with 2 x 8 steps. It's wealth of connection jacks allows it to be connected to the MS-20 and a variety of other synthesizers. Rather than the commonly used V/Oct standard, the CV design of the MS-20 always used the Hz/V standard that provides excellent pitch stability limiting the step sequencers that are able to correctly control the MS-20. As a descendant of the SQ-10, the SQ-1 supports the Hz/V standard, enabling it to perfectly control the MS-20 or MS-20 mini. It goes without saying the V/Oct standard is also supported, and the voltage level of the CV output and polarity of the GATE output can be specified as appropriate for the device you've connected. This versatility will enable you to control a wide variety of other synthesizers as well.

As a connector, the SQ-1 provides two CV/GATE OUT channels, the standard MIDI OUT and USB MIDI, littleBits out (to connect to the littleBits synth kit by littleBits Electronics Inc.), plus the SYNC IN/OUT channel that allows you to connect to the volca series and monotribe. Compact and complete with all the functions you need, the SQ-1 is the ideal hardware sequencer.

The SQ-1 provides two channels (A and B) of 8-step sequencer that can operate consecutively, or be used in a variety of other modes. For example, you can run A and B following each other to function as a 16-step sequencer, ignore the order and make the steps play randomly, or use A and B to control different parameters as they run in parallel. From simple sequences to complex changes, you can choose from a variety of modes to suit your needs.

The 2 x 8 step buttons can be used in the usual way to turn notes on/off, but you can also use the MODE button to switch their function, opening up powerful possibilities such as letting you "perform" the sequence itself, as on a volca unit.

"Active Step" lets you skip steps mid-way through a sequence, and "Step Jump" lets you instantly play just the step that you press, producing irregular rhythms or effects that are reminiscent of short loops. "Slide" produces an effect in which steps are connected smoothly; using this to control a synth bass is an easy way for anyone to generate an acid sound.

Packed with carefully selected functionality, the SQ-1 features a compact and very sturdy sheet-metal body. Placed beside the MS-20 series, you'll notice a sense of solidity that gives the impression they were manufactured in the same era. The unit can operate on two AA batteries or on USB bus power.

Sequence step resolution is selectable as quarter notes, eighth notes, or 16th notes.

You can specify the way in which the step knobs control the pitch. The knob values can specify the pitch directly, or they can specify the closest note in a major, minor, or chromatic scale.

Humbuckers have more average energy than single coils which can cause compressors to stay in "compression mode" for a lot longer. When this happens, any series of notes you play will sound dull. With the quick release of the new Compressor Plus, your humbuckers remain true sounding, and each note retains dynamic attack and definition.

The Tone Control is Keeley's own design taken from analog delays and other vintage effects. Those effects used an emphasis circuit to recover treble and highs after they went through the BBD or other analog delay lines. That circuit was then taken and made it into a full fledged tone controll- it is the perfect way to gently add back in those highs lost in the compression process.

The Blend Control is a way of getting the peaks to come through while having sustain at the same time. So if you want sustain more than peak-limiting, this style of Manhattan Compression is for you! Keep all the peaks and transients with the Blend and Tone Controls while adding sustain on the back end. Heaven!

Review: Dave Clarke's Red Series remains a vital benchmark in the evolution of UK techno. Released between 1993 and 1996, the three-volume run even managed to brush the UK top 40 back in the good old days when anything felt possible. The Beyerdynamic DT 770 Headphones 80 Ohm are closed back dynamic headphones that use the same comfortable, sound isolating design as the 250 Ohm studio version, but with a lower resistance for general purpose and mobile applications. Because of the lower resistance, the DT 770 Pro 80 Ohm headphones are louder and work on low power devices such as smart phones, MP3 player, laptops and bus powered interfaces. Therefore, if you are working in a loud environment or using a battery operated device, the Beyerdynamic DT 770Pro 80 Ohm headphones make the perfect choice of headphone.

When out and about, you really need to block as much ambient noise out as possible and a lot of headphones do this by clamping the ear-pads as tightly to your ears as possible and using materials that absorb a lot of sound. This produces two unwanted issues; discomfort, after prolonged use; and a loss of audio quality as sound being generated by the driver is absorbed by the cup. The DT 700 Pro series avoids this by using a clever bass reflex system and a large circumaural cup design with velour pads. Of course the real technology is in the transducer itself, which produces a nominal frequency response of 5Hz to 35kHz and a nominal SPL of 96dB, an exceptional performance.

Notes: Each of the two sections of the module is capable of performing the analog multiplication of two signals (A and B) and add an offset (C). It can also act as a dual voltage controlled attenuverter, dual ring modulator, dual VCA or four channel mixer (see block diagram below).

The B inputs are routed to an attenuverter that multiplies the signal between -2 to 2, while the offset inputs (C) route through a unity gain attenuverter (multiplies the signal between -1 and 1).

The output of first section is routed to the output of the second (when the first's output is unused), so the second output can act as master to achieve (A1*B1+C1) + (A2*B2+C2) or (A1 + C1) + (A2 + C2) - a 4 channel mixer.

The through-zero (four-quadrant) multipliers in the A*B+C allow for true Ring Modulation. To achieve this, simply connect two waveforms to the A and B inputs.

Notes: The Whammy Ricochet lets you bounce your playing up or down in pitch in controlled or crazy shifts. A momentary switch and customizable independent rise and fall time ballistics, allow you to get the Whammy action you know and love without the use of a treadle. Just hold your foot on the footswitch and let the Ricochet do the rest. Seven pitch selections - 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, Octave, Double Octave, and Octave+Dry, as well as a toggle to select up or down for the selected pitch. The Whammy Ricochet also has latching footswitch mode so you can rise or fall to pitch and stay there, and an LED ladder that shows your shift trajectory at all times. All these controls combine to create classic Whammy pitch-shifting as well as new sounds never heard before.

Notes: Your USB device is plugged into the MIDI USB Host mk3 instead of into a computer. It provides MIDI In & Out sockets for USB MIDI keyboards and controllers which have only a USB B type socket. For example, used with a USB-Solo, it allows the USB-Solo to be used in a standard MIDI setup, just like a Pro-Solo. It has a USB Host port (USB A type socket), a MIDI In and a MIDI Out (both 5 pin DIN).

The MIDI USB Host mk3 now has additional features. In addition to the standard operating mode, there are now two further modes.

Standard mode (LED Green):
MIDI data received at the MIDI In socket is sent to the USB device and MID data from the USB device is sent to the MIDI Out socket.

Merge 1 mode (LED Amber):
MIDI IN does not go to USB device but instead is merged with MIDI data coming from the USB device which is then sent to the MIDI Out socket.

Merge 2 mode (LED Red):
MIDI IN data is sent to the USB device & is also merged with MIDI data from the USB device which is then sent to the MIDI Out socket.

The modes are selected sequentially by pressing the recessed push button - the LED colour indicating which mode is current.

The attached USB MIDI device MUST be 'Class Compliant'.

The MIDI USB HOST is powered by a regulated 5V mains adaptor (supplied), and can supply up to 1 Amp of buss power to the attached USB device. This product is supplied with a multi-region power supply suitable for use in most countries.

Connecting
You can connect one "Class Compliant" USB device directly into the MIDI USB Host. If your host has the latest firmware already installed then you can plug in a powered USB hub and up to four USB devices can then be connected. Earlier MIDI USB Host mkIIs can be updated with a free download which is available from the support section of our website. Serial numbers N6-2421 already have the hub compatible firmware. Serial numbers N3-0541and upward can be updated.

It is recommended that you attach your USB device to the MIDI USB Host before applying power. Then plug-in and power the power adaptor. The active LED should be lit up. If you apply power with nothing plugged into the MIDI USB Host, the Active LED will flash steadily; this is to indicate that it is waiting for a suitable device to be attached. If it is still flashing when you have attached your device, then it is possible that your device is not class compliant, however you could try turning off the power and start again.

Some USB MIDI devices have two modes of operation and can be set to operate in Class Compliant mode even if this is not the default. The Class Compliant mode might be called "generic driver", the other mode may be called something like "advanced driver". Consult the device manual to see if the mode can be set for Class Compliant.

If you unplug then re-plug the USB cable while it is powered the device might reconnect, but it is not certain.

Power

It is essential to use only the supplied 5V regulated power adaptor. Applying a voltage higher than 5V to the MIDI USB Host will probably not damage the MIDI USB Host itself, but it could damage any attached USB device as the 5V is passed on to the attached USB device for buss power. There is protection circuitry inside the MIDI USB Host to protect against reverse polarity and over-voltage, but these should be treated as a last resort and are not guaranteed to prevent damage to an attached USB device in the event of over-voltage as the USB buss voltage could rise to 6.5V before being clamped.

Care should be taken to ensure that power adaptors for other pieces of equipment are not accidentally plugged into the MIDI USB Host.

If the input voltage rises above 6.5 volts then power will be shut off. The LED will go out and the unit will not operate again until power has been removed for at least 60 seconds. This allows time for the thermal fuse to reset.

Notes: Module A-101-8 is a 8-stage phase shifter which uses light-sensitive resistors (LDR) and is a replica of the Compact Phasing A manufactured by the company Schulte in the seventies. The actual phasing circuit is identical to the historic model. Only the illumination control of the LDRs is different: the A-101-8 uses LEDs to illuminate the LDRs, the historic model used incandescent miniature lamps. And the A-101-8 has no built-in LFO but can be controlled by any external control voltage source (e.g. LFO, ADSR, random, Theremin, ribbon controller, sequencer, midi). The phasing offset (i.e. the base value for the phase shifting) and the modulation depth of the external control signal can be adjusted separately. The Compact Phasing A had no offset control but only a depth control for the built-in LFO. Feedback and mixing ratio of the output signal are set by two controls. The audio input is equipped with an attenuator. The module has two audio outputs available (same as the historic model) and a visual display of the phase shifting.

The module has these controls and in/outputs available:

The module has some peculiarities (same as the historic model):

The input signal is processed at first by a pre-stage which outputs a "modified" input signal (*). This signal is not processed by the phase shift stages but is affected by the feedback setting. Only when feedback is set to zero this signal is identical to the input signal. Otherwise it contains feedback components.

This signal is output on socket Out 2.

When both output sockets Out 1 and Out 2 are used as stereo channels one obtains a spatial stereo sound effect.

The same signals is also used for the CCW position of the mix control. With mix control fully CCW the unmodified signal appears only if the feedback control is set to zero. Otherwise it contains feedback components.

The historic model had two audio inputs: one 5-pin DIN socket and a 1/4" jack socket. The DIN socket was intended for high-level line signals. When the 1/4" jack socket was used the amplification of the pre-stage increased by about 100. The 1/4" jack socket was intended for low level signals (e.g. electric guitars or microphones). For this feature the A-101-8 has an internal jumper that can be used to increase the amplification. As long as the module is used within the A-100 system usually the lower amplification is used to avoid distortion.

The 8 photo resistors and LEDs are assembled within an small lighproof box. In addition the pc boards are made of lighproof black material to avoid interfering light from other modules or the bus board.

Notes: MMF is an analogue, multimode filter with a 12dB per octave slope. Its sonic character swings all the way from classic low pass to squelchy acid lines. The Andy Summers Walking on the Moon is an analogue flanger with a simple but powerful control set of RATE, RANGE, and COLOR. RATE sets the speed of modulation which ranges from slow, smooth filter sweeps to jittering vibrato. RANGE controls how narrow or wide the effect sweeps into the bass frequency range. The COLOR control effects the intensity of the flanger effect from subtle chorusing effects to classic jet woosh sounds. These three controls interact to create a wide breath of modulation effects.

Additionally, the Walking on the Moon includes a FILTER MATRIX which disengages the LFO from the flanger circuit, freezing the flanger giving a fixed filter effect, which can add chime or metallic overtones to your sound without the movement of a traditional modulation pedal. A DRY output allows you to split your dry signal from the effected signal.

Notes: The Listen IO is a simple module which gets signals in and out of a Eurorack system by converting to and from normal modular levels. The top section converts any external signal to modular levels by providing up to 30x gain (+30dB), allowing you to use table-top synthesizers, keyboards, phones/tablets, computers, toys, microphones, etc. in your patches. The bottom section does the opposite: modular signals are converted to normal line level signals. The circa-1980 Electro-Harmonix Attack Decay is a sought after prize among vintage pedal aficionados. Originally called a Tape Reverse Simulator, it's known for producing volume and reverse swells, backward tape sounds, artificially short staccato notes and bowed instrument effects. The freshly designed EHX Attack Decay reinterprets the classic and keeps its cool factor, but adds some modern features for convenience and enhanced functionality.

It can produce a single volume envelope like the original, or, with Poly engaged, put separate volume envelopes on each note you play. The built-in Harmonix fuzz is now a fully controllable distortion with gain, tone and volume controls. The effects loop allows the musician or sound designer to place the volume envelope onto whatever signal is present at the Return jack. Expression pedal/CV input and three user presets give the user total control over their Attack Decay!

Notes: Stereo effects processing for Tangible's affordable AE modular system. Offers a total of 15 digital effect programs with CV control over three parameters each. Can run in Eurorack via an optional adaptor frame.

The MULTIFX module offers 15 different stereo audio FX programs, a wide variety from common FX like reverb and delay to unique effects like Ring Crusher or Glitch delay. Also a nice shimmer effect is onboard.

Each program has 3 parameters that can be adjusted and additionally be CV-controlled.

With a switch the sample rate can be reduced to half the normal rate, resulting in doubling the effect times (with reverb, delay...) and introducing a nice portion of aliasing.

It is based on the FV-1 DSP chip that is well-known from other FX-modules in the Eurorack world; the MULTIFX module offers the 7 factory programs of the chip plus 8 new and unique ones created by Tangible Waves.

The primary output contains a perfect sine wave with a wide frequency range and pristine volt per octave tracking. The Sub output features two sine tones that can be blended together to achieve a mix of one octave below, or a fifth above the primary output's frequency.

In addition, both outputs have an internal wavefolder that adds harmonic content to the signal allowing for spectrally complex tones within a single module. Keep your tones pure (or not!) with Sine.

Notes: Pico Drum2 is compact yet versatile percussion synthesizer in a 3 HP eurorack module. It features 8 drum synthesis algorithms created to deliver distinct sounds to your modular system. Each algorithm offers a lot of flexibility therefore a big sounding bass drum and a squelchy snare can be dialled in within the same algorithm. It also tracks 1V/Oct and all parameters can be mapped to the CV1 input.
