The latest split release from their VQ X series opens up with the spellbinding, micro dub meditation 'The Serpent & The Jaguar' from Deadbeat before swerving into the equally tender folds of Triptease & Yonatan Levi's 'Amniotic Jive'. Tuccillo opens up the B-side with some crisp, immersive broken beat rhythmic incantations, and then Wareika round the record off with a smouldering piece of hi-tech jazz from the outer rim. This is subtle, elegant minimal at its warmest, make no mistake.

Review: Demi Riquisimo's 'A Lifetime On The Hips' sublabel returns to make it a hat-trick of releases for 2023 with the impressive 'Body Move' V/A, featuring eclectic club cuts from Dreamrdreamr, SY, Papa Nugs, Elfenberg, Absolute. & Ysanne. Dreamdreamr's emotive 'Zone 4 Booty Call' kicks off the A-side; it's a track that effortlessly fuses elements of deep house, trance, and r&'b, setting the the tone perfectly for an EP not bound by the borders of any genre. The titular 'Body Move' by SY is up next; a no-nonsense house chugger with flourishes of Italian 90s progressive and acid - a perfect modern interpretation of a foundational strand of club music. The A-side wraps up with one of 2023's most exciting prospects Papa Nugs and the vocoder infused, percussive, twisted jam 'Loosey Goosey'. The flip picks up right where the A-side left off with Elfenberg's 'Solarplexus', a cosmic, evolving and psychedelic interpretation of house. After, UK mainstay Absolute offers a 'Devastating Rhythm', a peak time techno floor filler that sounds like a Frankenstein mix of seminal imprints Dance Mania & D'jax-Up-Beats' output - proper gear. If you are one of those people then get your ears around this superb new various artists 12". YokoO & Zone+ offer one of the standouts with 'Once I Had It"]' which pairs subtly swirling pads with cuddly deep drum loops. Hermanez has his kickstand with a little more weight but they are no less hypnotic, while Moya (US) brings some enchanting strings and yawning vocals to 'Meliora' and Electricano keeps it nice and warm and liquid with the supple loops of 'Universal Language.'

Review: Cimedirapax opts to welcome no fewer than four artists to its fourth EP, and they all take one track each. There is plenty going on with MoYA81's 'The Way We Like' from electro crash drums to wonky Italo melodies to withering sci-fi disco effects. Yu's 'Another Call Me Bad' rides on cascading synth arps that never let you settle for a moment and Gianluca Pellerano's 'Alienated Theater' then explores slamming tech house with electro style melodies bringing a cinematic vibe. NND cuts the most loose of the lot with sheet metal snares and wispy synths, prying bass and crisp tech funk drums on 'Incomingtransmission.' Innovative stuff all round.

Review: Not in fact the work of a studio duo, Promising/Youngster is in fact the chosen name of electro investigator Diego Cadierno. Cadierno has found a supportive home in Analogical Force, who he returns to with this finally constructed EP of needlepoint machine funk spread across four tracks. There's an electronica slant to his music, not least on the likes of 'Frozen' with its fragile melodic threads and crispy, introspective beats. But 'Amen' and 'Highway' also feature plenty of slap to get a dancefloor moving, if that's what you require from your fresh electro grabs.

Review: High Fashion brings some big summer house action here with Steve Disco Newsome's two mixes of that stone cold classic 'Everybody Be Somebody' by Ruffneck Feat Yavahn. The opener is solid, mid-tempo house with vast drums and raw hits all topped off by the iconic vocal. It's sweaty and high impact, make no mistake about it. On the flip, the Disco Dub is packed with raw filters, lots of frazzled loops and marching drums to get the floor into a real frenzy. Both tunes bang, frankly.

Review: Leading the way for minimal sounds in their hometown of Venice, Caposile present the second volume of their The Sound Of Garden series with another four high-quality workouts aiming at the subtler kind of dancefloor. Mihai Pol is up first with 'Sugar Rush', a trippy delight with bouncy bass and shimmering synths garnished with an iconic sample. Francesco Maddalena ups the tempo and creates a swirling dream of garage house-meets-jazzy ambient that should grease up the dancers a treat. Giuliano Lomonte locks in for a heady ride through gated chords and teasing patterns with elegance at their core, and Sublee drops something rougher with the old-skool stylings of 'Day Six', a boxy jam that would sound right at home on Nu Groove.

Review: Fresh Sounds #000 is a new and unique series, limited and numbered to 150 examples thanks to the efforts of its parent company Ribo Cochlee. For the very first edition of the series, a mockley crew of newcomers come to the fore, be they DJ Moar, Disco Flegrei or Holdtight. Centring on woozy jazzdance and disco with an airily produced bent, the highlights on this one have to be Flegrei's 'Titamesque', which basks in a kind of sexy sophistry procured by the heady combination of live drums and a (we think) muted bass clarinet, and Yured Jones' 'Far Away', which breaks from the genre prescription for a more cinematic breakdown.

Review: Insense has put together a tidy 7" featuring a rendition of Pharoah Sanders' 'Moon Child' which was first specially crafted for the compilation album Incense Music for Bed Room. It is a lush and spiritual sound led by gorgeous wind instruments and fluttery melodies over gentle and persuasive rhythms. On the flip, Yoshiharu Takeda's 'Bliss Of Landing' is another escapist sound with more of the same. A lovely 45 rpm for those quiet moments.

Review: Midlands duo Y U QT are new school garage heads with a great brand, youthful energy, and the ability to craft slamming tracks that destroy dancefloors up and down the country. That never happens at the expense of quality, though, as this latest 12" on their own label shows once more. These rave ready cuts mash up plenty of different sub genres and show the pair is always subtle evolving their sound following chart toppers like 'You Belong To Me', viral Boiler Room sets and sold out shows across the UK. It's no wonder their music gets played by the likes of Bicep, Ben UFO and Octo Octa when it makes the sort of impact that this EP does.

Review: Pleasure of Love reissue imprint, New Islands, launches with a quiet stormy, soulful Balearic stunner. Kim Yaffa's 'Once Bitten' was recorded in LA and released on a 1989 private press 7", only to be buried in American record bins for decades after. A re-emergence of Yaffa's music on the internet in the last couple years has reached a fever pitch, with collectors thirsting after copies of the record. Now, New Islands has worked directly with the artist to deliver an official reissue, professionally transferred from the mixdown reels, carefully restored, and remastered. The track is an effortless class-act pop tune, with 80s blue eyed soul / Sade inspired sounds, and unknowingly Balearic production that renders it timeless (it's reminiscent of Linda Di Franco, Edie Brickell or 80s Fleetwood Mac). Review: Five years in, are we any closer to working out who exactly is behind Yama Music? All we know for sure is they deal in reductionist grooves with one eye on the Berlin after hours scene, and beyond that it's all down to the music. The eighth drop in the series deals in some absolute gold, leading in with the freaky, finely chiseled beat track 'Monomeros' which sounds like it was carved from a huge tree stump and set to work propping up the dancefloor. 'Oddies' meanwhile deals in smudged and surreal sounds from the outer edges of minimal house, with some cheeky synth flex adding some colour in between cloudy pads in the middle distance and plenty of dirt on the drums. 'Hide & Seq' slips into something slinkier as a comparatively crisp, bouncing beat worms its way into your subconscious accompanied by faint wisps of late morning melodies - true magic for discerning heads at the roll-on.

Title cut 'Para Siempre' opens up this red slab of wax with irresistibly fulsome and bouncy kick drums under raw perc. 'Umbrella Corps' is another funky thumper with a smattering of congas and toms tumbling down loosely up top. It's a sweat inducing cut that will lock in any hungry crowd. Review: Following the release of the (rather good) multi-artist EP, Balance, Satya is back to serving up solo showcases - in this case a third label outing from sometime All Day I Dream contributor YokoO. He begins in typically warm and woozy fashion, wrapping rising and falling analogue synth sounds, cut-up vocal snippets and tech-tinged electronics around a deep-tech groove ('When I Wait Next To You'), before reaching for more minimalistic beats, trippy noises and wobbly, UKG style sub-bass on 'I Look at You'. 'I Want More of You', which boasts selected vocal snippets from a late-80s classic, is pleasingly dubby, dreamy and ultra-deep - the EP's most potent moment in our book. German duo Superlounge's accompanying remix is a little breezier and looser, despite the presence of locked-in tech-house beats.

Review: German label Workshop is surpassing itself with two excellent new EPs in the same month. As well as a solo effort from DJ Slyngshot, here they offer up a four track VA packed with gold. It kicks off with the lush and ambient-laced deep house of "Strip Down to E" before taking off with the wonky chord hits, off balance drums and withering sci-fi effects of "Grand Street Piano", which is rave re-imagined. Things get as deep as you'd expect of a track called "Cerebral Repertoire" with its crystal clear and reflective pads, then "Zero" catches you off guard with its skittish rhythms and unusual arrangement. As always here, Workshop have cooked up some truly beguiling brilliance.

Review: Berlin's Yoofee has been on a good run after reemerging back in 2021. He makes deeply atmospheric sounds that draw from dubstep, house and cosmic electronic music. The class Casa Voyager label snaps up him for some of that here and he opens with the fizzing pads and deep space ambiance of 'Lost Papers' all layered up over a hustling broken beat. 'I Know' is another jazzy broken beat wonder with chopped drums, keys, vocals and more all coalescing into something soulful in new ways. Review: Yosh is one of UK bass' youngest leading lights. He now reaffirms this credo with the breakstep / garage EP 'Space Freight', and in the process draws heavily on themes of spaceflight and hi-fi sci-fi - daring boldly to go where no UK garage producer has ever gone before. Opener 'Cool Down' asks us to chill, imbuing us washy curtains of synth and darkside basses as we step willingly into the stasis pod. Review: Martin Muller originally dropped PPPPP as a 12" on Rhythm Cult back in 2016, as youANDme was hitting a level of omnipresence in the tech house sphere. The track was always destined to be a hit, making great use of an iconic Loletta Holloway sample and strapping it to a more modern kind of club cut. Now that record is being revisited with this remix package, featuring one of the original 'Diva' mixes backed up by versions from certified legends Ian Pooley, Cinthie and Yotam Avni. 'Healing Paradox' is an irresistible one to start - silky neon synths and scurrying bass with kinetic drum kicks. 'Gabagabagool' gets more twisted with its rumbling drums and warped leads while the David Motor City rework of 'Healing Paradox' ups the ante and is constantly shifting. Review: Another week brings another monster new 45 from the incomparable Athens of the North. This time out it is an early 80s bit of irresistible gospel, disco and boogie from Earl Young. 'Take Them In Prayer' is pure gold thanks to its tight and funky rhythm section, the delicate thinking on the keys and the heart aching vocals of earl Young that soar up top. Flip it over and on the reverse of this one and you will find 'Let Him Be Your Everything,' a quiet love song with only melancholic keys for company. It's the complete opposite of the a-side but is just as devastating for different reasons.

These more than able producers land on a hand-stamped translucent green wax 12" that marks the second installment in the Source Material Various Artist series. Just like the first, this is a monster outing with four searing electro cuts that bring intergalactic warfare to any party. '116ctro' is a visceral cut with corrugated rhythms and zippy synths. 'And We Rock' has a funky broken beat and tons of reverb and 'Compassion' slows it down a touch but has lashing synths and thunderous kicks to keep you moving.

Review: French producer Yuksek has released rather a lot of music over the last 15 years, though this appears to be his first ever collection of re-edits. You'll want to check tasty opener "How I Love To Dance", a lolloping rendition of a quirky and obscure disco number rich in Patrick Adams style instrumentation and well-placed dub delays, while the drum-heavy "The Beat" features waves of wonky percussion, a pulsating bassline and plenty of sweaty FX. Elsewhere, "Think Of You" is a head-bobbing revision of an AOR disco/disco-rock cut that sounds like it could have been re-edited by Eric Duncan, and "Dance In Disco" is a seductive Gallic disco chugger rich in heavily accented English vocals and jazzy electric piano solos.

It is starkly emotional and demonstrates a lightness of melodic touch that is beautiful to experience. Introverted and perfectly poised for self reflection, the album is an essential audio partner for these strange and unsettling times in which we live. There are darker moments of experimentation, but always balanced with improve jazz or lighter moments that lifts the mood. It's perfectly time during an era when we can't be back in clubs, and is her strongest work by far.

Review: 'Faded Photographs' is the latest album project by Icelandic producer Yagya. Featuring his usual blend of ambient and dub techno, this one is also among his first to incorporate elements of deep house, pop and classical music, with friends Oskar Guojonsson, Benoit Pioulard and Bandreas cropping up on vocal and saxophone features. Despite the fact that there are over eleven tracks on this opus, every track on the album makes use of 3/4, rather than the bog-standard quantised 4/4, time. The overall effect is a skippier, dreamier, more laid-back queering of techno, contrasting to the straight and unswung vibe of its square forebear.

Review: Born in Algeria, when it was still among France's colonies, to French parents who themselves claimed Italian heritage, it makes perfect sense that Edouard Joseph Scotto Di Suoccio would wind up making music that seemed born out of a very different place to the one you're looking at. No matter what, or where, you're gazing upon. Strange tunes that take some describing, let's start at the beginning. Following his series of chanson singles released in the late-1960s under the pseudonym Ted Scotto, by the middle of the next decade he'd adopted the Tregger alias and was dipping toes into tones along the lines of what Space Oddities is packed with. First laidback jazz funk, things became more and more exploratory, sci-fi, disco, and kosmische influenced as the years went by. That legacy is remembered and honoured today on some of the world's finest groove-soaked dancefloors and the DJs that dominate them, with this collection giving an insight into the more experimental end of that oeuvre.

Yaps were one such prime example, who would find themselves moving from zero instrumental understanding to support sets for the likes of Ramones, The Exploited and GBH, to name but a few. 'Punk Directo De Las Montanas' compiles the 1988 self-titled 7" and the 'Tu Sentencia' full-length from 1990 onto one LP home, provided by punk restorer extraordinaries Radiation Records.

Review: 'There's A Riot Going On', the fifteenth album from New Jerseyan indie rockers Yo La Tengo, started life in 2015 as a mesh of home recordings, new material and previously unused material from other projects such as their film score work. The effect of this long gestation is audible, it's a sort of kaleidoscopic patchwork of psychedelic soundscapes and calm, warm alt-indie songs that meld together seamlessly (think a slightly more out-there version of fellow Garden State natives Real Estate). The second half of the album is punctuated by more unusual moments, the percussive pseudo-jazz jam of 'Above The Sound', bossa-nova instrumental interlude 'Esportes Casual', and the horizontal ambient doo-wop of 'Forever', amongst others. Nevertheless, the strength of 'There's A Riot Going On' lies in how well it all fits together, whilst quietly showcasing how deft YLT's songwriting hand is.

Review: While legendary London proto-punk outfit The Boys carved out a lasting legacy and notable, if admittedly minute, impact on the early scene, one of their most bizarre and sought after contributions is the Christmas themed record released in 1980 under the pseudonym The Yobs (a very complex anagram). Credited under the aliases Noddy Oldfield, Ebenezer Polak, Kid Vicious and H. J. Bedwetter, the LP offers their very own shitheaded renditions of seasonal classics from 'Jingle Bells' and 'White Christmas' to more folk and biblical pieces such as 'Auld Lang Syne' and 'Silent Night'. If you're a Chrimbo punk sick to the back teeth of all the versions you hear repeated ad nauseam each year, then this reissue of The Yobs heading towards the exit on their own ludicrous terms is a vital stocking filler.

Review: With a snaffled picnic basket under one arm and an MPC in the other, Yogi (AKA Sam Rose) invites us to "Jellystoned Park" to discover why he is smarter than your average beat-maker. It's the little-known producer's first solo set - or at least the first of his lone albums to be pressed onto vinyl - and an unassumingly impressive affair at that. Utilising a wide range of ear-pleasing samples (from quirky easy listening and AOR, to jazz, funk-rock and folk) and his own skittish, often off-kilter hip-hop beats, Rose delivers a series of short sketches, interludes and blink-and-you-miss-them workouts that tend towards the stoned, bleary-eyed end of the spectrum. The result is a hugely entertaining collection of instrumental hip-hop jams that's a cut above many of its competitors.

Review: Yoruba Singers were musical pioneers who cooked up a unique fusion of cultures and influences that were said to be a pre-curser the Champeta Criolla sound in the Caribbean coast of Colombia. They infused Guyana folk music with Afro-roots and culture most notably on this, their debut album, Ojinga's Own. It made them into stars throughout the Caribbean and South America and led to standout singles like 'Basa Bongo' which is also being repressed this month. This album has been remastered for the first ever vinyl reissue and makes for gloriously sunny listening with organic drums and percussion, majestic wind and string sounds and carefree vibes.

Not only a prolific producer, he's also got a razor sharp flair which edges him in front of a crowded scene, and now he's back to Vivid to show us exactly what he's about with a 12-track double-pack, his biggest release to date. In one sense you should know exactly what to expect - elevated steppers and deft rollers, but the fundamental appeal of Yosh is all those ear-snagging traits which make his tracks sparkle, and you never know what they're going to be until the needle's tracking in that groove. Now you can enjoy that sensation 12 times over - a good deal if ever we saw one.

Review: With their Mercury-winning 2014 debut 'Dead', Edinburgh trio Young Fathers set the bar high for themselves, which they met with 2015's follow-up 'White Men Are Black Men Too', and continue to do so with new album 'Cocoa Sugar'. Their third record isn't as brash and in-your-face as their previous two, but that's not to say that this any less impactful, instead 'Cocoa Sugar' is a stripped back, concentrated The group have a unique ability in that they can draw elements from a range of genres, with an outcome sounding in a class of its own and tantalisingly hard to define. Also, in their use off-kilter loops, gospel-esque vocals, haunting samples and breakneck speed verses, Young Fathers create dualities and contrasts that playfully subvert. Tracks like 'See How', 'In My View' and 'Lord' appear to tread into joyous and cathartic pop territory, before being pinned down by unnerving scraping samples and dissonant synthesis. It's these intelligently executed sonics and structures that make 'Cocoa Sugar' an addictive, thrilling and beguiling listen.

Review: Yuna's self-titled debut album came with three tracks produced by none other than Pharrell Williams. That was a decade ago when she was just 24 years old and one of the hottest properties in the scene.
