Devil Go (7")
Cat: AFR 7 7. Rel: 25 Jun 18
Funk
  1. Devil Go (3:40)
  2. Jesu Kristo (4:33)
Review: While he lived a musical life that spanned from boogie to gospel before he passed away in 2016, Nairobi's David Waciuma didn't get to record much. He was known much more for his live performances with bands such as The Monks Experience then, later, Rapture Voices who he recorded these two records in the mid-70s. "Devil Go" is a thumping rhythm and blues call and response piece while "Jesu Kristo" hits with more of a frazzled bluesy funk. Both make you wish he recorded much more.

Review: Introducing Warm Drag, the debut album featuring !!! (chk chk chk) associate Paul Quattrone and former K-Holes vocalist Vashti Windish. It presents the fifth album Los Angeles label In The Red have released this year which, to stretch a writer's imagination, can be filed under: spacey western distorted punk pop. The album dusts itself up in a tattered post-punk style with the motoring "Cruisin' The Night" while also moving into more trip hoppy numbers like "End Times". In a way it's like colliding Suicide with Massive Attack and more of the turned Chemical Brothers genius. To dance, grumble or swing, Warm Drag hits the spot.

Review: It's been twenty five years since the last Roger Waters solo album, and given the fractious nature of global affairs of late, it's hardly surprising that the lugubrious 74-year-old rock colossus has had no trouble finding things to get angry about of late. Dishing out songs on drone warfare, terrorism and American nationalism, 'Is This The Life We Really Want?' - which is stylistically very much in the mould of his post-'Dark Side' oeuvre - may be no barrel of laughs, but it's oddly reassuring that his righteous rage remains undiminished, not to mention aided and abetted by the skills of Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich in its intensity and relit ire.

Review: It would be very easy, given his legendary status and rabid fanbase, for Paul Weller to rest on his laurels, but what's made this modern-day renaissance mod's recent records so compelling has been their sonic restlessness and his desire to hunt out new stylistic forays, and this is a lineage that 'Saturn's Pattern' carries on in style. Certainly, there's a classicist edge to his work here on songs like the fuzz-driven single 'No Time' and Beatles influences rise through the raunch throughout, yet elsewhere futuristic synths and art-rock flourishes abound, rendering this album a testimony to a questing spirit that still sounds fresh after nearly forty years of making music.

Review: Something of a deity to many, Paul Weller has undergone more than his fair share of metamorphoses in a storied forty year career, but the quality control of his output post-2007's '22 Dreams' has surprised even some of most ardent devotees, and 'A Kind Revolution' is ample evidence that even as he approaches 60 his creative energy and questing spirit are undimmed. He's still searching for new modes of expression that belie his reputation as a soul-style traditionalist, and in a fractious and hostile era, the messages of hope are as much a balm as his increasingly mellifluous voice.

Review: Jack White has firmly established himself as many things-rock renaissance man and paragon of analogue recording amongst them, but strangest of all in the evolution of this mercurial figure is the way he's consistently challenged himself, and essentially only made wayward and compromising records as his twisted path has continued. Case in point is Lazaretto; perhaps his most eclectic and eccentric work to date, yet also his most focused, personal and euphoric in tone. A glorious trawl through a plethora of styles and moods and replacing the riff-worship of The White Stripes with enough freakish ideas to fill five albums this is proof positive that Jack White's muse is at its most potent when at its wildest.

Review: Enduring rock favourites Wilco are now onto album number 11. It is a stripped back affair but one that still offer sup the sort of singalong choruses fans keep coming back for, as well as lyrics that are as expressive as ever. They come from Jeff Tweedy who is in as fine form as ever, while guitars around him vary from acoustic and gentle to more raw and rousing. The drums are nicely deadened to lend the tracks some weight and various personal crises are mused upon through the course of another timeless record from these tried and tested indie heroes.
