Review: .There's plenty to talk about with The Who's historic show at Fete De L'Humanite, a huge open-air event hosted by L'Humanite, the main newspaper of the French Communist Party. For starters, on the day - Saturday 9th September, 1972 - an estimated 400,000 people were in attendance, a crowd size that dwarves pretty much anything we can think of today, and remains the band's largest ever gig. Taking to the stage as evening set in, they set to with a typically ferocious set, and four of the most standout pieces for the show are immortalised here on record. Unsurprisingly, that timeless anthem of misspent youth, love, rebellion, and hope for change, 'Baba O'Riley', is a dominant factor, although epic finale 'Relay' is perhaps where the might of their rock 'n' roll juggernaut is most felt here.

Review: It's been a while since we encountered The Wave Pictures, and it's safe to say they're every bit as welcome today as they were in 1998, when predecessor project Blind Summit was founded. There's always something incredibly charming but also truly funny about their work. Far from comedy rock, which has a restrictive shelf life after which it almost becomes unlistenable, nevertheless David Tattersall et al are guaranteed to make you crack a knowing smile.

Review: While he lived a musical life that spanned from boogie to gospel before he passed away in 2016, Nairobi's David Waciuma didn't get to record much. He was known much more for his live performances with bands such as The Monks Experience then, later, Rapture Voices who he recorded these two records in the mid-70s. "Devil Go" is a thumping rhythm and blues call and response piece while "Jesu Kristo" hits with more of a frazzled bluesy funk. Both make you wish he recorded much more.

Review: Since first joining forces in 2007, frequent collaborators DJ Pippi and Willie Graff have established themselves amongst the higher echelons of the Balearic fraternity, primarily by delivering records that offer a soft-focus blend of disco, deep house and downtempo grooves. Their latest single - a cover of Ewan McColl's loved-up 'First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', a song famously turned into a 1980s Balearic classic by Joanna Law - offers a particularly sumptuous variation on their sonic blueprint, with their original mix (B1) combining luscious orchestration, Spanish guitar solos, shuffling samba drums and a stirring lead vocal from Clarita de Quiroz. Review: .Athens of the North has been a buy-on-sight for years. The Edinburgh-based soul, disco and funk reissue label rarely ever misses and does some of the most tireless digging in the game as this latest 7" shows. It is a spotlight on one of the best tunes made by Anthony Brightly while working with a young Wendy Walker. 'We've Got One' is dub tinged slow-motion funk with a glorious vocal, and on the flip is Legal Assault's 'Nice & Slow'. This one is also from the Sir George label and a sensuous deep soul and lo-fi gem with steamy vocals and lush chords.

Review: Ben White - not the same Ben White that plays as a defender for Arsenal - was just 25 when he was brought by Eddy Bongo Brown of the Funk Brothers to the Motor City to play with Marvin Gaye. It was five years after that when he lay down this single - his only one, although it is said there are some lost tapes featuring a full album on them out there somewhere. We hope it is found as this is excellent - 'I Would Have To Be A Fool' is a super smooth soul with nice funky rhythms and a hint of disco energy. 'Just Give Love A Try' is a more slow and lavish groove with choral backing and fancy piano.

Review: It was always a pretty weird idea for Weezer to turn their attention on Vivaldi's violin concertos, The Four Seasons, and release a four-part EP series inspired by those classical landmarks. An out of the blue concept given this Rivers Cuomo-led outfit aren't exactly famed for waxing lyrical about the legendary work.

Review: One-off masterpiece release of German minimal synthpop from Gutersloh, Germany in 1984. Recorded in a DIY recording studio in a former prison for the mentally ill, located on the outskirts of a forest near the artists' homes, aptly named Prison Studio, in 1984, the release was privately pressed on 7" by the band itself, distributed in limited quantities and has changed hands only a few times on public marketplaces since its original release. Wave Shape's Transmission has always been as rare as it is good, to quote Basso. Now, the release is made available again to collectors and DJs as the first release on Average. Included in this 12" repress are two stunning new remixes by virtuoso producers and friends Alexander Arpeggio and Aradea Barandana, each bringing their own flavour to the table.

Wills has been building up a name for himself across a slew of releases on labels like Holding Hands, 2X, Lemak and Subsequent, and his sound is accomplished and engaging on this fresh batch of tracks. 'Waiting For Rob' is a warm and shimmering track that splits the difference between sharp tech house and fluttering melodic electro, which Tim Schlockermann then remixes into a low slung, broken beat mood that leans on the bass. 'Vimto Paradox' takes things into moodier territory with a broad sweep of keys spelling out an eerie mood around a minimal beat. 'Cap Snatching' finishes the EP off with a more overtly electro construction marked out with snappy acid flecks and a crisp 808-esque beat.

Review: A striking debut EP from Tokyo artist Iori Wakasa; 'Botanica' is a psychedelic house EP unto its own, summoning the environmental/ambisonic ritualisms of his locale, but repackaging them into a thoroughly danceable deep tech aesthetic. It's a fusion sound which is quite rare in other contexts. Wakasa, also a DJ (and now label head) based in Japan, has more recently expanded his repertoire to performances in Indonesia, Vietnam, and South Korea, and we'd wager it's this wealth of experience that has informed on the impeccable sonic synergies of 'The Pure Land' and 'Lunar Down'.

Review: Japan seems to excel at everything and anything it does, including reissuing golden jazz funk. This time out, Hysear Don Walker's "Complete Expressions Vol. 2" is mined for the two escapist and mellifluous tracks that make up this essential 7". Ryuhei The Man edits "Children Of The Night" into a smooth flowing bit of late night and romantic jazz funk. It rides on a pensive bass loop and has a subtle sense of drive, while the slower original is that bit more sentimental with its noodling chords and more meandering mood. Both sides are pure winners.

Review: Chiwax are back this week with a more than welcome reissue of Wax Fruit's one-and-only release Whispers from 1994. This was one of many aliases sussed by Toronto-based producer Ron Allen, who some of you may know for his seminal work as one half of Psyance (with Hayden Andre Brown) who released on Plus 8, as well as his work under the names Aztech, The Apache Project and The R.A.S.E. The late night mood music of the title track is a true zeitgeist from the period in which it was released, while the looped-up disco sampling deep house of 'Just A Party' or 'Mindgames' over on the flip were equally as trendsetting as anything fellow Torontonians like Nick Holder or DJ Sneak were making at the time.

Review: Waxwood generally likes to keep his identity on the down low, though it was confirmed recently that he's a Brooklyn-based Russian with a penchant for cosmic and spiritual music from around the world, as well as layered ambient experimentation and intoxicating house and techno beats. All of these traits come to the fore on "Kama", which sees him pepper a rolling, head-nodding hypno-house groove with simmering strings, relaxed electronics and chiming melody lines. It's rather good, all told, as is the more obviously Balearic flipside revision by Swiss crew Fuga Ronto, which adds guitars, electric bass and new backing vocals for an even wider-eyed listening experience.

Review: Mary Wells was one of the many jewels in the crown of Motown at the peak of its powers back in the 60s. 'My Guy' is one of her biggest-ever hits from 1964 and was written by Smokey Robinson of The Miracles. Lyrically it addresses a woman's rejection of another man's advances in favour of remaining loyal to her boyfriend. The tune reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart but was Well's last for the label aside from a few duets with Marvin Gaye. It remains a classic to this day.

Review: Reggae mainstay Delroy Wilson dropped this easy soul skanker back in the mid-70s. Now the original Clocktower label reissues it again on a limited 7" as the OG has become hard to find and much coveted. It's a brilliantly laidback tune and warming organ chords at its core, lazy drum hits and fat bottom kick down below, all finished with the laissez vocal coolness of Delroy. Flip it over for an even more slowed down and sensuous rhythm version, but the a-side with its sweet vocal takes some beating if you ask us.

Review: Chicago-bred, now Brooklyn-based beatmaker DJ Rude One is by now a firm part of the underground hip-hop scene He made his biggest impression with 2016 LP ONEderful which picked up critical acclaim and plenty of fans as well as shining a light on new names like Westside Gunn who have also become stars in their own right. They link up again here on this new 45rpm 'Supreme Trunks'. It's a low-slung beat with spacious drums and minimal detail apart from an edgy synth loopy that marries with the slow, purposeful mic work. Limited to just 400 copies, this is a real treasure.

Review: COD3 QR welcome the mighty Roshan Chauhan debuting a new guise, Works Of Intent. You might better know him as R.O.S.H, a producer with a string of standout club 12"s released around four years ago for the likes of Rekids and Twin Turbo. Now he's honing in on a dramatic, measured approach to techno which emphasises spatial sound design and synthesis, keeping the rhythms poised to carry the towering sonics. This is particularly true on the epic 'Left Unseen', but also true of the re-framed hard trance synth blooms that shape out 'Old Ways, New Mistakes'. Those are but two points of intrigue on this assured statement piece from an artist plotting a new trajectory for himself.

Review: .You can never have enough edit labels really, which is lucky because there seem to be an infinite number of them out there and all serving up the goods. Colpo Grosso outta Italy is a new one that is only up to EP number two but a fine one it is too. Paul Older's 'Disco Ennio' has funk in its bones and Italo in its melodies. Antonio Del Mondo's 'Nessun Dolore' (ADM edits) is a funky house number with lavish chords and rugged bass. Wandervogel's 'Io Sono Figo' has a gritty lo-fi feel with Spanish vox and a couple of dusty Lego edits close down.

Review: UK based production team Weekend Sun is made up of Phil Smith and Chris Tarn. Here their loose and inviting 'Hoochie Coo Strut' tune gets presented on a limited edition 12" with a pair of killer mixes. The original is all deep cut, slow motion disco grooves, spangly guitar riffs and big horns. It is a cacophony of sound that gets dialled right back by Al Kent. His take is a low slung groover with jazzy chords given plenty fo room to breath and neat little riffs filing in the spaces beyond. Review: The deep archives of disco legend and synth wizard Patrick Cowley continue to prove inspirational for Dark Entries. Cowley, who passed away from AIDS-related illness in 1982, was the multi-faceted producer behind numerous disco anthems such as Sylvester's "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)". Since 2009, Dark Entries has been working with Cowley's friends and family to shed light on the lesser known facets of this singular artist's output. This has resulted in a string of celebrated archival albums, including Catholic (featuring Jorge Socarras), School Daze, Muscle Up, Afternooners, Mechanical Fantasy Box, and Some Funkettes.For the latest addition to this saga, White Trash Boom-Boom, Dark Entries has teamed up with The Stud to release four tracks culled from some of Cowley's earliest rehearsal tapes. In 1972 Patrick was living in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood with Theresa McGinley and Janice Sukaitis, friends of his from New York. In 1973, Theresa and Janice formed White Trash Boom-Boom, an all-female avant-garde performance troupe. Reacting to the Angels of Light and the Cockettes, they captured the spirit of the times: camp, confrontational, and delirious.

Review: Wisdom Wita Z aka LaShonda Corder hooks up with Dark Entries for a rare Detroit-adroit arsenal of new 90s-style house bangers. 'It's Me' was produced by DJ Maestro and DJ 001, both influential figures in the Detroit techno scene. The B-side, meanwhile, hears a retake from the adjacent DJ Resurgence. An anthem for owning and loving oneself, direct comparisons could be made to the diva vibes of Crystal Waters or CeCe Peniston, but Wita Z brings an entirely new character to the genre, with the production bringing a moodiness to the sound and giving neat contrast to her up-front vocals.

Review: An avalanche of brilliant soul reissues are coming on Kent this month. This one is taken from the Scepter/Wand tapes on which Maurice Williams and Walter Wilson have one release each. Maurice Williams' 'Look My Way' is one of his best tracks with its classy horns and soaring vocals next to 60s strumming and smooth grooves. Walter Wilson's 'Not Now But Later' is actually by an artist alias of Tommy Keith who wrote and recorded some key soul music. It's a self-penned ballad that will melt any heart.

And that's what we have here - a yellow and red splattered vinyl 7" with a booklet featuring some backstory, and all heavily limited to just 100 copies. Review: Last year DisDat dipped into Andrew Weatherall's archive of unreleased music and unleashed 'Y.W Eleven', a deliciously chuggy, druggy, synth-heavy affair that sounded like the late producer's take on 'Enjoy The Silence'-era Depeche Mode after a fistful of hallucinogenic mushrooms. 'Y.W Fourteen', a kind of sequel mined from the same source, is a little breezier and quietly Balearic in tone, with attractively fluttering synth lines bubbling away atop a crunchy, mid-tempo electro beat and intergalactic electronics. The accompanying remix comes from the effervescent Ricardo Villalobos, who successfully re-imagines the track as a rubbery, bass-heavy chunk of locked-in dancefloor minimalism in his distinctively wonky-but-funky, otherworldly style.

Review: Oh how we all miss Andrew Weatherall. Not only was he a masterful DJ who could lock you down for hours on end, but he was a producer who could bring his own brand of sleaze and filth to disco and techno. On top of that, he was always a voice of reason, of humour, of realism. Sad as his passing is, it's nice to hear from him again via this previously unreleased track on DISDAT. 'YW Eleven' is all distorted synths riffs alternated with beautiful chord progressions that make for another standout bit of apoco-disco. On the flip, Rhadoo reworks it into a superb bit of snaking and brain melting minimal tech house.

A heady fusion of house and breaks, 'Satellite' is the ultimate energetic pumper that feels impressively true to the late 90s rave sound despite its recent production and pressing date. On the B-side 'Mind Sweeper' takes a darker turn, embellished with glistening high hats and resonant, obscured vocals, this track develops beautifully over the course of its length. Review: Bart Skills is a veteran techno producer and Drumcode is a veteran techno label, but neither shows any signs of age here with Weska also joining in for a pair of highly potent and weaponised new cuts. They take up one side each and first is 'Something More' with its sweeping blasts of white noise, factory floor sound effects and unrelenting drums that will demolish any dancefloor. 'Palm Strings' then carries on the party with a more stripped-back sound initially, but eventually, the rising synths take over as the gritty drum loops pound away below. A pair of big room monsters for sure.

Review: New Orleans funk outfit The Wild Magnolias were active in the mid 70s, releasing two albums and then regrouping in the 90s. Their sound is in step with their more renowned Louisiana peers, but certainly running hotter than the likes of The Meters. "Handa Wanda" is a stirring, effervescent call and response epic that shows the band at their best, rocking a wall of sound approach that keeps the pressure up the whole way through. "(Somebody Got) Soul, Soul, Soul" is a more fluid track, but it's certainly no slouch in the energy department either. This is hi-octane funk to get people shaking and sweaty.

Review: While most Editorial EPs feature contributions from a range of high-flying re-editors, their latest collection of cuts boasts a particularly star-studded line-up. For example, it features a now rare outing from Jeremy Duffy under the familiar Duff Disco alias, a gently rolling disco-soul revision called "Burning Hot" that underpins a suitably glassy-eyed cut with his trademark soft-touch house drums. More up-tempo fare can be found on side B, where Hotmood's disco-funk rearrangement "I Was Born In Mexico" - think restless slap bass, eyes-shut guitar solos, bouncy drums and rising horns - is joined by the razor-sharp disco-funk sweatiness of Alex Zuiev's "I Feel Funky".
