Review: Wiremu popped up back in 2018 on Pathway Traxx, and now the wriggly minimal upstart is back with another crafty workout for those who like their stripped-down club gear a bit on the wonky side. 'The Subtle Hustle' has a springy, playful funkiness which calls to mind the mid-00s era of labels like Trimsound and Minibar, where there was space for a little jazziness in the miniscule samples darting around the drums. It's a quality which follows through the whole of this standout EP, which is teeming with detail and soul in equal measure.

Review: Lol Hammond is a former member of Spiral Tribe and early live techno act The Drum Club who now makes music on his own as Wah Wah Planet. Back in 1990 is when he penned this fantastic five track Balearic house EP alongside Russell Crone and with female vocal contributions from Lucy Sian. It very much lay out an early blueprint for UK street soul and the opener on the A-side 'Jewel' explores a romantic theme with hooky pop lyrics. Things get more left of centre on the 'Love FXU' with three trips into a smoother sound world perfect for sun kissed island dancing and with influences ranging from early breakbeat and trip hop to elements of dancehall music.

Review: Chicago outfit Wavelength tap into the funk traditions of bands like Parliament here with a seductive and rather sleazy new EP for Soulistic 360. The whole thing has been arranged by Windy City soul innovator Rahaan and comes on white marbled vinyl 12". Opener 'Can You Handle This Funk' is slow, steamy, sensuous with its languid kicks, live, raw drums and drawled vocals all luring you into the groove. The remix is a subtle teak of the original and on the flip is 'Kemetic Dance Party' which brings more Afro style drums and some bold sax lines to get things going in a more energetic way.

Review: Wots My Code has been back on our shelves recently with some of his most seminal EPs getting reissued. His self-titled effort from 1992 came back in October, as did his All Seasons EP also on Kiteforce, both of which sounded as good as they did back when first crafted. Now his The New Dubplates EP drops on Just Another Label with 'Dubplate' kicking off as a remix by Bay B Kane that takes no prisoners. A Sikka remix then tweaks the energy level and on the flip is 'Pass Me A Dubplate (92-3)' a short but sweet closer.

The Warrior version, which was recorded at some point in the early '80s, is a little slower and breezier than Klein and MBO's original, with even finer fretless bass flavours and the track's famous melodies re-played on some particularly spacey synthesizers. Helpfully, the Klein & MBO version is on the A-side, so you can easily compare the two: Warriors' little known cover is definitely our pick of the pair.

Review: A follow-up to last year's successful compilation 'Faith Presents: Ain't That A Groove', is given to us by the London-based label Faith ran by DJs Terry Farley, Stuart Patterson and Dave Jarvis. The high energy house party sound kicks off with Nolan who features the legendary house voice of Sir. Robert Owens. Hilit Kolet isn't shy with the extended remix of 'POV Siren'. This sound is synonymous with Feller and Heller DJ sets of the mid 90s. Philippa's extended remix of 'The Night' by Roach Motel backs that one up with another prime floor filler with hardly any let up. Lastly, Terry Farley, Wade Teo & Kameelah Waheed brings he deep groover "Dancing After Dark" to the party. These tracks will have you and the nightclub crowd out dancing all night.

Review: Gospel, FM funk and house collide on the latest offering by The Whole Truth aka. Tom Giles. Following up last year's 'E Da Boss' on Star Creature, 'Believe' is an impassioned plea to the would-be testifier, enjoining them to give over and into their inherent faith, which, if only it weren't for their psychic occlusion of a certain inner harmony, is bound to be fleshed out soon; aside from this sampled command on the vox, the track is effortlessly glitzy and modally shifts between bass harmonies. The inverse club mix is far sparser and dubbier at first, though slowly reveals its inner truth by way of a more stripped-back, mod-wheeled and trigger-padded experimentation.

Review: The Roulade label is doing things right - not only is the music they are serving up superb, but so to do this second 12" comes with great and original artwork. Its neon glow and diffuse light capture the vibes of the synths on the opening cut 'C'est Party' perfectly. It's a melodically rich tech house cut with rubbery bass and great spoken words from a world disco dancing competition. Occibel's 'Give 'Em Some Rest' is busy and dense with whirring sci-fi synths, funky Prince riffs, thudding house beats and plenty of colour. Add in two more equally vibrant and characterful cuts from Hearthug and Wooka on the flip and you have one of the most unique EPs we've heard in some time.

Review: Shout out to brand new label Planka that opens its account with the perfect entitled Funderground EP. It's a various artist affair that welcomes some new names (to us) to the scene and first to go and first to impress is Moray. 'Lujuria Universal' is full flavour tech with punchy kicks and driving, fizzing bass to get clubs going. Natural Goofy brings twitchy cosmic unease to his hurried 'You Are Alone' then Len Lewis takes things into more physical realms with the loopy tech and astral basslines of 'The Emperor Strikes Back'. It is left to Will Vickers to close down and he does so with the freewheeling and turbocharged house of 'Arf Tone.'

Review: DJ Nobu and Wata Igarashi and two of the finest techno talents in all of Japan right now. Their knack for sound designs is seance to none - the latter having a background in that for computer games helps, of course. They have a deep sound that is utterly hypnotic and so to have them together on one record is a treat. It is London's Fabric that has made that so here with them both offering up once cut each. 'Flares' from Nobu goes first and melts the mind in the usual fashion while Igarashi's 'Abuku' is more percussive but no less subversive.

Review: The iconic Is It Balearic heads to the slightly less iconic - in Balearic terms - West Midlands to retrieve this great EP of electric dance effort gems from Wrekin Havoc. 'Camino' is a loose, melody-rich sound with silvery drums and real nostalgia, then 'Moon Dance' it's a more laidback and zoned out sonic daydream for lazy and sunny afternoons by the pool. There is an electro vibe to 'RLTW' which is a reworking of a Christopher Cross Yacht classic then a T Kurt Remix reworks it into a boogie banger. Another varied and vital EP of grown up dance sounds.

Review: A Detroit electro-bass classic! 'Boomin'' originally appeared on Will Web's second EP release, 'Extraterrestrial Phunk', on the legendary Detroit label Direct Beat in 1996. It was also featured in Dave Clarke's seminal 1998 'Electro Boogie' mix release. This long-overdue reissue includes the remastered original mix, as well as two previously unreleased versions - the 'Alt Mix' and 'Bonus Beats'. All versions of the track portrary a hollowed-out, leaden vision of the alt-future and command a fantastic use of reverb and space, as if the music were being blasted through a cybernetic bullhorn; everything sounds impressively analog, but the tracks all escape the common electro pratfall of requiring everything to sound front-and-centre.

Review: An air of mystery surrounds this new While My Sequencer Gently Bleeps project, but what we do know is that they have two superb EPs dropping at the start of 2024. This one, OK, opens with 'Amber' which is a nice undulating and deep cut with lush synth smears. 'Emptiness' hangs synths in the air over more lithe broken beats and 'Felt' is a stripped back rhythm with majestic chords, blurts, bleeps and more all adding colour. 'Hesitation' and 'Burton' round out this sublimely supple and subtle synth record.

Review: Ben White - not the same Ben White that plays as a defender for Arsenal - was just 25 when he was brought by Eddy Bongo Brown of the Funk Brothers to the Motor City to play with Marvin Gaye. It was five years after that when he lay down this single - his only one, although it is said there are some lost tapes featuring a full album on them out there somewhere. We hope it is found as this is excellent - 'I Would Have To Be A Fool' is a super smooth soul with nice funky rhythms and a hint of disco energy. 'Just Give Love A Try' is a more slow and lavish groove with choral backing and fancy piano.

Review: All we really know about this one is that The Wolf is an artist based in Berlin. He has started his own label here to serve up his latest studio concoctions and this first one is all about slamming minimal cuts. All of them are untitled in true underground minimal fashion, of course and the first one pairs rickety lines with under-lapping bass and dreamy chords. The second one heads to the stars with Detroit style pads smeared about the mix over punchy but stripped back rubber kick patterns and last of all is a more thumping deep house groove with more liquid pad work and a sense of serenity.

Review: Delroy Williams dropped plenty of reggae heat back throughout the 1970s, 1980s and on into the 90s. He has a buttery smooth voice and often layers it up over dub with digital sounds and sleek synths, such as here. 'Keep Loving' is one of his best from back in 1989 and now it arrives again via Only Roots on this fresh 7". The original on the A-side is mid-tempo and fresh, with clean drums and crisp hits and squelchy bass underlining it all. The version allows that futuristic production to really shine through.

Review: If there's one seasonal single that's as timeless as it is unashamedly cheesy, then it's Last Christmas by Wham! Originally released in December 1984, radio stations quickly began to realise that the constant rotations of the track would cease as December would dissipate. The fact that the song came packaged as a double A-side with 'Everything She Wants' on the flip, meant a sleeper hit was hidden and waiting in the wings to take up almost equal spins as 1985 dawned upon would be listeners (the track even made it number one in the USA on the Billboard Hot 100). It is another top 7" version of Fatboy Slim's megahit 'Praise You', in authentic rocksteady style, performed by Jamaican vocal group Junior Dell & The D Lites, who've been active since the 1960s. "Mi haffi praise you", gleefully intones Dell, against an impressive interpretive backdrop of jubilant brass and cabareting bubbles. You might better know him as R.O.S.H, a producer with a string of standout club 12"s released around four years ago for the likes of Rekids and Twin Turbo. Now he's honing in on a dramatic, measured approach to techno which emphasises spatial sound design and synthesis, keeping the rhythms poised to carry the towering sonics. And that's what we have here - a yellow and red splattered vinyl 7" with a booklet featuring some backstory, and all heavily limited to just 100 copies. Review: Six Minute Mile has rightly got plenty of attention for its first few outings and their early good work connotes with this eight 7". It's from Ohio's Wesley Bright who has joined forces with The Means of Production and New York's Ben Pirani, and is a lovely mid-tempo roller that reminds of balmy summer nights. The tune comes in two parts and opens with lovely Rhodes chords that are a great foundation for the tenor vocals of Wesley. Then come plenty of irresistible hooks and the rousing vocals sing of love and devotion like all good soul sounds should.

Review: .There's plenty to talk about with The Who's historic show at Fete De L'Humanite, a huge open-air event hosted by L'Humanite, the main newspaper of the French Communist Party. For starters, on the day - Saturday 9th September, 1972 - an estimated 400,000 people were in attendance, a crowd size that dwarves pretty much anything we can think of today, and remains the band's largest ever gig. Taking to the stage as evening set in, they set to with a typically ferocious set, and four of the most standout pieces for the show are immortalised here on record. Unsurprisingly, that timeless anthem of misspent youth, love, rebellion, and hope for change, 'Baba O'Riley', is a dominant factor, although epic finale 'Relay' is perhaps where the might of their rock 'n' roll juggernaut is most felt here.

Review: Philly native Josh Wink is still as relevant as ever, partially because he didn't just spend the decades after his breakout hit 'Higher State of Consciousness' trying to recreate the same thing. He has landed on several well-regarded labels, though mostly on his own 30-year-old Ovum, and here heads to House of eFunk for a new EP that taps into his nostalgic feelings of house from years gone by. Review: The Heavy Beat label is almost at the not-so-small milestone of 50 releases. Ahead of that comes a 47th, and this time it is a reissue of a Wayne Wade jam from 1991 that has been reissued a number of times in various formats. The original is a dancehall-tinged sound with those subtle warrior leads and shiny digital synth sounds topped with an old school lover's rock vocal. The flipside version comes from Computer Paul and it slows things down so that sweet bass has more room and space to land and really make a mark.

Review: Heads High keeps up the good early work with a third interesting offering, this time in the form of a meeting of the fiendish minds of Mike Misiu and Eddie Smilie, aka Wednesday Club. They offer up late-night club sounds with plenty of musical nouse and worldly nuance that comes as a result of late-night sample mining across the African musical landscape. Their tunes are crafted on nice analogue gear so have that lovely freed edge feel and from the space-house of 'Magic Body' to the swaggering dub of 'Magic Dub' via the cosmic expressiveness of cruising groover 'Love & Care'. This one gets dubbed out to close a fine dancefloor adventure.

Review: You can always count on Public Possession to put out quirky, ear-catching gear for switched on dancefloors. On this occasion they've tapped up Wolfram and Josh Ludlow for this tongue-in-cheek acidic stomper which is roundly defined by the robotic narrator demanding we go back and forth to the club ad infinitum. It's cheeky and a tonne of fun, with a deadly 707-toting beat to back it up, presented in snappy edited form on the A-side and stretched out in extended form on the flip.
