Openers XXXV Edits kick off with the cosmic vibes and expansive melodies of 'Space Bass Rooster' before Lego Edit layers up some old-school soul and funk on 'P-Man.' On the flip is the elastic bass funk of Soulbrigada's 'Hum Bello' with is flabby rhythms and great vocals then closing down is a Wandervogel's 'Mirage,' a Rhodes-laced house groove that is jazzy, lo-fi, soulful and brilliantly warm. Review: Jayson Wynters is one of the UK's more underrated producers. He hails from Birmingham, has mastered Kung Fu and is no slouch in the studio. This outing on Spanish label Pulp - written back during the lockdowns - is one of his best yet - a deep look into the cosmos, with star-gazing synth lines and analogue drum sounds that are frayed around the edges. Misty-eyed chords define many tracks, with the loosely jumbled drums and rasping basslines all interlocking perfectly. 'Corns Funk' has twanging bass riffs that remind of Prince, while 'Night Drive' is a Dam-Funk style late-night street cruise during sunset.

Review: It's 20 up for Positive Pay For Japan, who have got a wealth of funky 7"s out this month alone. It comes from Milton Wright, a big presence on the Miami soul scene throughout the 1970s. He was one of the many siblings in the Wright family alongside Betty, Phillip, Charles and Jeanette and also served as a justice on the Boston Municipal Court from 1998 to 2004. This 45 serves up 'Let's Take A Break,' a slow motion and deeply funky number with poignant bass notes and Milton's stylish vocals up top next to plenty of big horns. The party picks up with 'You Like To Dance,' a brighter tune with a positive vibration.

Review: Wrekin Havoc does just that with its second release from the artist of the same name. After a big first EP that really announced the label's arrival in style this one is another tasty disco collection. 'Heavy Breathing' has toting old school chords and Italo drums and 'Work It' bring glossy vocals, crashing hits and a libidinous vocal. Things get slow and seated but just as steamy on the flipside cut 'Dirty Devil' then last of all is the glorious bit of exotic and tropical, boogie tinged disco freshness that is 'That Is The Question.'

Review: According to the mildly amusing back story that accompanies this debut release from the Wrekin' Havoc crew, the crew of crate diggers turned re-editors behind the series make their wares in a cave in deepest wales, armed with just a computer and a pile of Balearic-minded wax. Whatever the real story, there's plenty to savour on their first outing. Opener 'Oh La Lover' is a tasteful tweak of an obscure, slap bass-sporting, mid-tempo French disco number from the early '80s, while 'Love Shock' breathes new life into an electrofunk era slab of Gallic rap/synth-pop fusion. On the reverse, the cave dwellers first play around with a boogie-era, drum machine-propelled cosmic disco number ('We're Truckin'), before delivering a saucer-eyed delight in the shape of the luscious 'Catch Me If You Can'.

Review: The iconic Is It Balearic heads to the slightly less iconic - in Balearic terms - West Midlands to retrieve this great EP of electric dance effort gems from Wrekin Havoc. 'Camino' is a loose, melody-rich sound with silvery drums and real nostalgia, then 'Moon Dance' it's a more laidback and zoned out sonic daydream for lazy and sunny afternoons by the pool. There is an electro vibe to 'RLTW' which is a reworking of a Christopher Cross Yacht classic then a T Kurt Remix reworks it into a boogie banger. Another varied and vital EP of grown up dance sounds.

You might better know him as R.O.S.H, a producer with a string of standout club 12"s released around four years ago for the likes of Rekids and Twin Turbo. Review: Todmorden quartet Working Men's Club have long held a soft spot for Sheffield, with much of their music being recorded in the city under the watchful eye of producer Ross Orton. It makes perfect sense, then, that they'd commission an EP full of reworks from Steel City producers. Toddla T kicks things off in fine fashion via a rave-igniting, dancehall-tinged SoYo bass rendition of 'Money Is Mine' tailor-made for the city's Kabal parties, while bleep & bass godfathers Forgemasters deliver a drowsy, atmospheric, post-industrial deep house tweak of 'The Last One'. Review: Are Working Men's Club the best band to have emerged from northern England in the past decade? We'd say there's a very, very good chance. Catch them live on stage and Sydney Minsky-Sargeant, Liam Ogburn, Hannah Cobb and Mairead O'Connor are utterly captivating, and their combination of post punk, rock, electronica, and acid house transfers very well onto record too. Their DJ sets, for which 'Syd' leads the charge, are also nothing short of quality. Informed by genre-less masters such as Andrew Weatherall, Ivan Smagghe and Erol Alkan, as this latest Megamix goes to show, the idea is to create these deeply immersive cosmic soundscapes that aim directly for the dance floor, taking phrases and sounds from their songs, reworking, rethinking and rearranging them into something fresh and high energy. Review: Given that Neil Anderson's Original Gravity label is an unashamed tribute to the 1960s ska and rocksteady sounds he loves (with occasional diversions into rhythm & blues and reggae), it's little surprise to see the imprint's house band, Woodfield Road Allstars, take on 'Shank I Sheck', a much-loved 'riddim' that was written, and first recorded, by Baba Brooks way back in 1964. The Woodfield Road Allstars version is a hazy, head-nodding rocksteady treat rich in heady Hammond organ licks, languid trumpet solos and jazz guitars aplenty. Over on the flip, Prince Deadly (likely an alias for Anderson) provides a lightly rewritten riff on the same core ingredients, naturally pushing the trumpet to the fore while reaching for dub-style effects and other 'versioning' studio tricks.

On this occasion they've tapped up Wolfram and Josh Ludlow for this tongue-in-cheek acidic stomper which is roundly defined by the robotic narrator demanding we go back and forth to the club ad infinitum. It's cheeky and a tonne of fun, with a deadly 707-toting beat to back it up, presented in snappy edited form on the A-side and stretched out in extended form on the flip. Review: All we really know about this one is that The Wolf is an artist based in Berlin. He has started his own label here to serve up his latest studio concoctions and this first one is all about slamming minimal cuts. All of them are untitled in true underground minimal fashion, of course and the first one pairs rickety lines with under-lapping bass and dreamy chords. The second one heads to the stars with Detroit style pads smeared about the mix over punchy but stripped back rubber kick patterns and last of all is a more thumping deep house groove with more liquid pad work and a sense of serenity.

Review: Wisdom Wita Z aka LaShonda Corder hooks up with Dark Entries for a rare Detroit-adroit arsenal of new 90s-style house bangers. 'It's Me' was produced by DJ Maestro and DJ 001, both influential figures in the Detroit techno scene. The B-side, meanwhile, hears a retake from the adjacent DJ Resurgence. An anthem for owning and loving oneself, direct comparisons could be made to the diva vibes of Crystal Waters or CeCe Peniston, but Wita Z brings an entirely new character to the genre, with the production bringing a moodiness to the sound and giving neat contrast to her up-front vocals.

Review: While most Editorial EPs feature contributions from a range of high-flying re-editors, their latest collection of cuts boasts a particularly star-studded line-up. For example, it features a now rare outing from Jeremy Duffy under the familiar Duff Disco alias, a gently rolling disco-soul revision called "Burning Hot" that underpins a suitably glassy-eyed cut with his trademark soft-touch house drums. More up-tempo fare can be found on side B, where Hotmood's disco-funk rearrangement "I Was Born In Mexico" - think restless slap bass, eyes-shut guitar solos, bouncy drums and rising horns - is joined by the razor-sharp disco-funk sweatiness of Alex Zuiev's "I Feel Funky". Review: Witch singles are well known by collectors of worldly sounds, but they have never sounded as good as they do now on this reissue seres by Sharp-Flat. Each one has been remastered from the original analogue tapes for the first time ever. These two are taken from the Zambian band's seminal 'Movin' On' LP from 1980. At that time they had survived the Zamrock years and built up a fine catalogue of psych and prog sounds but then took inspiration from the newly emerging electronic sounds of the 80s and reaches new highest. These two brilliantly funk and soul-filled disco stompers prove that and cemented the band as African disco powerhouses.

Review: Gamm has become known for its edits of disco, house and jazz classics but back in the day it used to drop red hot hip hop reworks of golden era sounds. It seems they are now getting back to that with this new three party 7" inch series which is focussed on the American east coast. Review: American jazz-funk organist Reuben Wilson is probably best known for his 1976, Chess-released slammer "Got To Get Your Own". He released plenty more tasty treats before and after that, including a raft of fine albums. It's on one of those sets (1972's "The Sweet Life", fact fans) that these songs first featured. Wilson's version of Marvin Gaye classic "Inner City Blues" is particularly potent. It features the organist playing a jazzy lead melody that replaces Gaye's original vocal, note for note. It's brilliantly done, with his backing band providing stellar support via a heavy, low-slung take on the song's familiar groove. Over on the flip Wilson layers up organ and sax lines on a suitably soft focus cover of Clifton Davis's teary-eyed soul favourite "Never Can Say Goodbye".

Review: Sonic Wax is dropping a couple of Jackie Wilson specials this month. Both are one-sided and limited edition 7"s, one being 'Light My Fire' and the other being this, 'Don't You Know I Love You', originally on Brunswick and found on Jackie's 1972 long player Beautiful Day. It's a life-affirming bit of upbeat and optimistic soul powered by soaring Philly strings, happy flute melodies and those beautiful, burning male vocals as well as some soothing female coos in the background. It's a northern soul gem that still does the business.

Review: Some serious UK electro history here, as Running Back delivers a fresh pressing of Equip's rare 1984 gem 'XXXO', which was previously only available as a single-sided 12" back in the early 2000s. It's an undeniably far-sighted concoction which was produced by Greg Wilson, Martin Jackson and Andy Connell for - but sadly never included on - the pioneering Streesounds UK Electro album the trio created. Although technically electro, the track's 4/4 beats and proto-acid sounds make it a contender for the elusive title of 'first ever house record made in Britain'. To back it up, Gerd Janson has re-edited two previously unreleased electro beats recorded by the trio for a breakdance performance at the I.C.A, both of which sound like mutant, extra-percussive fusions of electro and post-punk.

Review: Reggae mainstay Delroy Wilson dropped this easy soul skanker back in the mid-70s. Now the original Clocktower label reissues it again on a limited 7" as the OG has become hard to find and much coveted. It's a brilliantly laidback tune and warming organ chords at its core, lazy drum hits and fat bottom kick down below, all finished with the laissez vocal coolness of Delroy. Flip it over for an even more slowed down and sensuous rhythm version, but the a-side with its sweet vocal takes some beating if you ask us.

And that's what we have here - a yellow and red splattered vinyl 7" with a booklet featuring some backstory, and all heavily limited to just 100 copies. Musically this one packs a punch too with Wilson Boys opening up with 'Funky Bocas' - a busy Afro rhythm with tight interwoven guitar lines and big vocal cries. Wills has been building up a name for himself across a slew of releases on labels like Holding Hands, 2X, Lemak and Subsequent, and his sound is accomplished and engaging on this fresh batch of tracks. 'Waiting For Rob' is a warm and shimmering track that splits the difference between sharp tech house and fluttering melodic electro, which Tim Schlockermann then remixes into a low slung, broken beat mood that leans on the bass. 'Vimto Paradox' takes things into moodier territory with a broad sweep of keys spelling out an eerie mood around a minimal beat. 'Cap Snatching' finishes the EP off with a more overtly electro construction marked out with snappy acid flecks and a crisp 808-esque beat.

Review: Japanese imprint Ultra Vybe is midway through a seven-inch series focusing on some of the many gems tucked away on albums released by legendary U.S "funky jazz" label Groove Merchant in their early 1970s. Their latest picks are taken from pianist Larry Willis's 1973 set "Inner Crisis". You'll find the album's title track - a warm, mesmerizing and surprisingly melancholic fusion of restless organ lines, jammed-out electric piano solos, classic jazz horns and fussy grooves - on side B, with "Out On The Coast" on the A. This jaunty jazz-funk affair is far more hard-hitting, thanks in no small part to some rousing sax lines, blistering funk drums, razor-sharp jazz guitars and a seriously heavy bassline.
