The Afrosound - "Fiebre En La Jungla" (3:13)
Wganda Kenya - "Tipit Heyd" (3:39)
Review: Two previously rare Julio Ernesto 'Fruko' Estrada productions on one super-juicy 45! First up are The Afrosound with a cover of The Chakachas' instantly recognisable "Fiebre En La Jungla". Throwing an array of steamy, sensuous vocal textures, it will cause some serious heat on any floor whose dancers knows the original. We remain in Columbia on the B as one of Wganda Kenya's rarest Disco Fuentes 45s gets a revisit. Heavily percussive cumbia laced with rich organ-primed funk, things get really hypnotic when the groove strips back to the insistent rhythm devices.

All Stars - "Juice Crew Law" (3:48)
DJ DSK - "Check Out The Technique" (feat Akil & Mysdiggi) (2:58)
Review: This internationally-flavoured vinyl 7? is a raucous celebration of hip-hop culture. The All Stars team who have crafted the a-side is made up of a load of talented veterans a.k.a. DJ DSK, Whirlwind D, Chrome, Specifik and Mr Wonderful. They pool their skills for a heavy dance floor celebration of Shanghai b-boy outfit Juice Crew that pays fine homage to MC Shan's original '88 classic 'Juice Crew Law'. On the flip, DJ DSK Jurassic 5's Akil and Mystro offer up 'Check Out The Technique' which has a more 90s vibe.

Step In To Our Life (5:29)
For Real (3:50)
Review: When it comes to offering up seven-inch singles of tracks taken from classic or sought-after albums, Dynamite Cuts has an impressive track record. They're at it again here, this time mining Roy Ayers and Wayne Henderson's 1978 jazz-funk/disco fusion masterpiece "Step Into Our Life". On the A-side you'll find the languid, loose and groovy title track, a memorable affair in which dueling vibraphone and trumpet solos make merry atop a head-nodding, toe-tapping jazz-funk groove. Flipside "For Real" is a little more energetic and loved-up, with touchy-feely vocals, husling slap-bass and sci-fi synths to the fore.

Dave Barker - "We A Fe Come Over" (3:42)
Woodfield Rd Allstars - "Reggae Power!" (3:23)
Review: Here's come another sure shot from Dave Barker, a classic reggae vocalist whose croon joins the dots with the genres connection to US soul and r&b. 'We A Fe Come Over' is an uptempo, rocksteady-esque riddim produced by Neil Anderson, featuring some joyous trombone from Michele Fortunato and The O'Gees on extra brass where it counts. On the flip, Anderson leads the Woodfield Rd Allstars in a pristine version which centres some classic 60s-style Hammond organ flexing from Abramo Riti for a feel-good flavour sure to appeal to everyone who hears it.

Review: The Original Gravity label's Reggae Dynamite series sure is packed full of dance floor heat. This fourth volume turns up the temperature once more, starting with Dave Barker's 'Move It On Now' with spoken word mic work over a guitar laced riddim. Woodfield Rd Allstars bring plenty of big horn energy and hints of ska to their 'San Salvario Stomp' then appear again on the flip with the organ-lead sounds of mid tempo wobbler 'Norwegian Wood'. Melbourne Douglas completes the picture with 'Wheel & Come Again', another raw as you like and classic sound.

The Belmont Shadows beef up an acapella version of 'Kiss Him Goodbye' where you'll hear the drummer get wicked over cuts and beats from one of the top DJs of the west coast. Wackies Rhythm Force - "Hard To Find" (version) (3:07)
Review: Annette Brissett grew up in the USA even though she is a noted reggae vocalist. Her influences are the likes of Otis Redding and the Wailers and she also plays several instruments. 'Hard To Find' is one of her most well-known tunes and it pairs electronic reggae with prog rock guitars and her own soulful vocals. It's curious and compelling and has some funk deep in its bones. The version is provided by Wackies Rhythm Force who strip the vocals and make more of the noodling prog guitars and dubby swagger.

Review: The Circle of Confusion are a Swiss dub production duo, who, adding to their fast-growing repertoire of releases, now drop 'Soul Of A Lion', which features Wayne Paul, an English reggae singer who was mostly active in the 90s and 2000s. Though Paul disappeared from the scene towards the end of that period, he now returns with a defiant message of big-feline hope and reminiscence, sung against a modern reggae backing with a polished, 80s roots feel. "How you feeling right now... now that you're older and wiser?" he asks in the song. Alll the better now you're back, thanks for asking.

Review: Basil Thompson was Creation Stepper, a Jamaican roots reggae singer based in the UK until his passing in 2009. Meditative Sounds produced this one back in 2006 and it has been a well-known, well-loved record on the circuit ever since. Mixed by Dougie Wardrop at Conscious Sounds, it has a hefty bottom end, with wispy synths taking off into the sky, crisp and snappy hits and a more organic, whimsical lead melody buried deep within. There is passion in the vocal toasts up top and flip to over for the War Dubber - 'Declare Dub' version which dials everything back to a crucial dub.

The series gets its name from the epic Less Artists More Condos concerts that the late Ariel Panero threw in New York, showcasing amazing bands in some strange and unique venues. Review: Universal Cave Records 003 pairs another record digging and DJ duo, Philadelphia's D. Lord and Werner Williams. D. Lord's 'Start the World' is stampeding euro funk with chainsawing clav and an unrelenting bass groove. Maximum funk effect achieved with vital precision. Werner Williams' 'You've Got Style' exudes cool. It's one part psychedelic synth groove and one part cockeyed classic rock, soaring harmonies & juju for days - a long lost cousin to Fox's 'The Juggler.'

Review: DJ Nori's TK Records EP first arrived on the scene in 2016. It's become a sought after modern classic ever since because it features a sublime, double-header of tasteful edits that never fail to get funk lovers going. First he tackles Wanda Star Williams' 'Mr UFO', flipping it with big strident drums and fierce vocal deliveries that are perfectly impassioned. On the reverse is Montreal Sound's 'Music' which is a bustling and atmospheric funk jam with plenty of live recordings of vocals, claps and people doing monkey sounds to make it as characterful as possible.

Review: The Original Gravity label is at it once again, combing through hidden pockets to serve up the finest nuggets from bygone days. The label is on a shuffling reggae tip this time around, with their latest single headed up by Lonnoya Drake singing a snappy version of the sentimental soul classic, 'Only You'. It's infectious dancefloor magic with heart to match its heat, setting up nicely for the heads-down get-down of 'Shake Up The Dance' by Woodfield Road All Stars. 'Rudy Skankin' On The Moon' actually first dropped as a set of vocals by Melbourne Douglas on Original Gravity's Reggae Dynamite Vol. 2. Now it comes as a sequel to 'Skinhead Moonstomp' which was an OG skinhead reggae anthem by Ellis's Symarip. Review: Five years have passed since Superjock launched the Nola Breaks series of DJ-focused funk reworks. Here the New Orleans-based imprint offers up installment number nine, handing over the reins to local legend Professor Shorthair and Bay Area scratcher DJ Platurn. The former handles the A-side, wrapping the Enticers' fuzzy funk gem "Thief" - as sampled by Mos' Def - in fat new breaks and tight scratches. Review: Act of Sedition specializes in the most rarely seen of formats, the double seven-inch single. This is the label's third such release in a row and, like its predecessors, features fresh re-edits and re-fixes of classic funk jams. Dutch crew RocknRolla Soundsystem step up first, serving up a rolling, bass-heavy spruce-up of Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools" that's a little more 4-4 in feel than the Queen of Soul's original. SanFran Disko brilliantly rearranges the same artist's sweet 1983 boogie jam "Get It Right" - emphasizing the slap-bass, synths and bustling beats - before Frank Agrario gets to work on Marty Moore's punchy, disco era funk workout "Radiation Funk" with excellent results. Finally, Bully Boy provides a killer peak-time version of Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music".

Freedom - "Get Up & Dance" (DNA edit) (4:03)
SWV & Wu Tang Clan - "Anything" (DNA edit) (4:31)
Review: The Originals crew has decided to end 2020 in the same way as it began the year, by delivering fresh "DNA Edits" of two classic, in-demand floor-fillers. On side A they presented a tightened up, chopped-down, "45"-friendly revision of Freedom's 'Get Up & Dance', a 1979 disco-funk number that has been sampled countless times by hip-hop producers. The edit makes much of the party-hearty feel of the original version, flitting between the lolloping, horn-laden breaks (the portion most often heard in rap records), and the lesser-celebrated vocal parts. Over on the flip they provide a dope re-edit of one of the many tracks that samples 'Get Up & Dance': SWV's 1994 R&B classic 'Anything', featuring rap verses from none other than the Wu-Tang Clan.

Here they're represented in all their full spread glory; "Muziqa Muziqa" has an almost northern soul dynamic with its speed and wily sax blasts from Seyoum while "Muziqawi Silt" is a much more measured, introspective affair. Review: The Kent label has a couple of fantastic releases lined-up this month and this is one of them. Girls groups have a special place in the soul world and after early 60s and pre-Motown girls like the Shirelles set the pace, the ensuing years saw cross pollination of r&b to soul via pop, Groups like Gigi and the Charmaines were a part of that and though they never saw huge chart success, they should have. 'I Don't Wanna Lose Him' will get you up and marching and 'Forget The Girl' o the flip from Walter Jackson is a tender and lovestruck anthem to romantic loss.

Review: Do you feel like dancing? A masterclass in floor-filling (the inevitable result of including exactly what you want your audience to do in the lyrics) Henderson & Whitfield's 'Dancin' To The Beat' is an early example of psychologically affective music from New York - ironically hailing from an era in which city-dwellers didn't need much encouragement to dance in the first place. But hey. On 45rpm vinyl for the first time, both the repetitious vocal and remix-worthy instrumental versions are on there, giving this prime cut yet another fighting chance to make itself known.

The sound feels authentic, and the instrumental chugs along at a swinging pace - in keeping with the legendary instrumental over 50 years ago. Their latest of at least six new seven-inches to grace our ears in recent years, 'Last Night Reggay', is one-such midnight ditty, perfectly capturing the conflicting emotions of shame and relaxation one often experiences after a tumultuous night out. Basil Kirchin & Jack Nathan - "Viva La Tamla Motown" (3:50)
Alan Parker & William Parish - "Main Chance" (3:05)
Review: KPM Music might just be one of the most expansive music libraries out there, boasting a whopping 30,000 exclusive music tracks for licensing. Some of their earliest pieces are being reissued by Measured Mile, the latest of which appears here in the form of a split 7" by four of the label's most treasured contributors. 'Viva La Tamla Motown' helms up the A-side with wonky, laboured drumming and an excitable rock n' rolly guitar and harmonica. 'Main Chance' brings up the B with a more loungeified flutey strutter.

Lou Lawton - "Knick Knack Patty Wack" (2:51)
Walter Wilson - "Love Keeps Me Crying" (2:33)
Review: For their latest trawl into the world of rare soul and funk, Outta Sight has decided to reissue Lou Lawton's brilliant "Knick Knack Patty Wack", a punchy, horn-heavy and occasionally stomping 1967 cut that regularly changes hands for eye-watering sums online. Part of the appeal to collectors and DJs is the track's association with the British northern soul scene. The same could be said of Walter Wilson's "Love Keeps Me Crying", another 1967 recording that was only ever released in limited quantities as a "promo-only" 7" single. While not as sought-after as the Lou Lawton track on the A-side, its every bit as cheery and life affirming (despite the presence of rather melancholy lyrics above the driving Motor City production).

Too Hot (4:12)
Too Hot (version) (4:12)
Review: Swiss Balearic overlord Lexx returns with his first single of 2019. As with many of his recent releases, "Too Hot" is a collaborative affair, with Permanent Vacation regular (and longtime friend) Simon 'Woolfy' James swinging by the studio to lend a hand. James delivers a hazy and glassy-eyed vocal perfectly suited to the duo's chugging, Balearic style synth-pop/dub reggae backing track. In authentic reggae fashion, the flipside features a more spaced-out instrumental "Version" rich in whistling lead lines, delay-laden space synths, warm dub bass and tropical guitar flourishes. As much as we like the vocal mix, it's the flipside take that really sets our pulses racing.

The Poets Of Rhythm - "The Plan"
Wallace Brothers - "What Cha Feel Is What Cha Get"
Review: Originally out on the Practice What You Preach album from 1993, "The Plan" by German funkateers Poets of Rhythm has never been pressed up as a single, but has always remained much sought-after by the funk heads, and why wouldn't it be? It's got it all: a James Brown kind of sleaziness backed by a jump-up groove and a sliding set of organs. Wallace Brothers feature on the flip, with the rare funk blazer by the name of "What Cha Feel Is What Cha Get", a rare floor-dominator now available for your turntable. Records are your friends, Mukatsuku leads the way! As played by Mr Thing,Snowboy,Dean Rudland,Smoov etc

Willie Hutch - "Ain't That (Mellow Mellow)" (2:59)
The Dramatics - "Ocean Of Thoughts & Dreams" (4:37)
Review: Destination Motown for two Muro-curated classics: Jackson-collaborator Willie Hutch's 1974 horn-fest "Ain't That" still buzzes with soul power thanks to its full band orchestration and gutsy vocals from big Willie himself. The Dramatics play the consummate contrast; a Gibbs-style ballad from 77 all swoony and sweet, play this on a busy night and you'll increase the area's birth rate quite considerably.

Os Rouxinois - "Um Balanco Pra Voce" (2:52)
Wal Sant'ana - "O Viajante" (3:09)
Review: It was the iconic Copacabana Records that put out this classic MPB back in 1964. That makes 'Um Balanco pra voce' by Os Rouxinois one of the oldest releases in Mr Bongo's Brazil45 series and it is also one of the best. Arnaud Rodrigues wrote the tune which is a superb mix of exotic funk, bossa nova rhythms and quirky melodies from a five-track 7" of tunes that the band originally used to play on TV. On the other side, 'O Viajante' is the sort of irresistibly sunny sound that quickly wins your heart and is sure to light up any dancefloor.

Why Cant People Be Colors Too (edit) (4:31)
Review: BlackCash & Theo are back in this great series of funk, soul and party edits. Pleasure's "Bouncy Lady" was produced by jazz legend Wayne Henderson of The Crusaders. The intro break has been extended, and is said to be one of the all time classic hip hop funk breaks. Elements of this track were sampled on "Brand New Funk" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, "Word to the Mother (Land)" by Big Daddy Kane, and "Church" by De La Soul. On the flip, Whatnauts' "Why Can't People Be Colors Too" is an R&B jam with another heavy break, as sampled by Q-Tip, Pete Rock, Diamond D, Dilla, and "Oh My God" by A Tribe Called Quest featuring Busta Rhymes.

Jose Prates - "Nana Imboro" (4:28)
Wroblewski Jazz Quintet - "Nana Imboro" (3:15)
Review: The 62nd single in Mr Bongo's long-running Brazil 45s series is notable for containing Jose Prates' "Nana Imboro", a deep, hypnotic and intoxicating samba cut that was initially recorded and released way back in 1958. Relatively slow and steady by samba standards, its chanted refrain is thought to be the inspiration for Jorge Ben's much better known "Mas Que Nada". Wisely, Mr Bongo has backed Prates' sublime original with a 1960 cover by obscure Polish outfit Wroblewski Jazz Quintet. This dispenses with the chanting, instead increasing the number of intertwined horn parts. Given that original copies of the rare Polish EP it first appeared on will set you back serious money, it's great to see this fine cover included here.

Review: Producer Lewis M continues to make the most of his connections with the Inn House Crew, an all-star studio band made up of various veteran Jamaican reggae musicians. Here he presents an EP of "versions" built around the Inn House Crew's 'Contagious Riddim', which is included in a slightly spruced-up form - complete with additional solos and brighter mixing - as the A2 cut. Toaster Ras Ranger is the first to do his thing over the riddim, delivering nearly non-stop flows in his native patois, before AJ Franklin displays the riddim's versatility by turning in a soulful roots number ('Solomon'). Best of all, though, is Winston Reedy's effortlessly warming and soulful version, 'Hip-Hop Hooray'.

Review: Original Gravity have been hard at work putting together a third volume in their reggae Dynamite series. This one lines up another belting 45 featuring tunes from The Regulators - twice - Brentford Rd Soul Rebels and Woodfield Rd Allstars. All of the tunes have booming bass warmth and vintage organ riffs that just transport you to a time and a place, even if you didn't live it yourself. The drums rumble on like a fat bottomed elephant and the horns take a majestic lead. These are atmospheric tunes ready and waiting to get people moving and our standout is Woodfield Road Allstars' tribute to boxing legend Muhammed Ali.

Review: "In this time of war and crime... in this time of frustration and tribulation... guide us!" A veritably desperate prayer against the vagaries of a newly established Babylon, Whodem's latest Christmas offering on wax hears stalwarts J. Robinson, Whodemsound and Bopper Ranking team up to scramble together every flammable resource possible, to produce something, anything, resembling a guiding light. In other words: desperate times call for radical, rootsier methods. The dub here is just as affecting as the A, basking in the pure freshness of verbed-out rims and lonesome metric-modded delays.

The Sensations - "Those Guys" (2:24)
Winston Wright - "Moonwalk" (2:23)
Review: More classic rocksteady reissue action here, as the reborn Duke Records imprint delivers two more must-have cuts from the vaults of legendary Jamaican producer Arthur 'Duke' Reid. On the A-side you'll find the Sensations' 1968 single 'Those Guys', an organ-laden excursion where the group's sweet and harmonic vocals are a perfect match for the similarly sublime backing track. Turn to the B and you'll find 'Moonwalk' by pianist Winston Wright, a deep cut that sat unissued for well over 20 years before finally seeing the light of day on a 1993 compilation. It's well worth a listen, if only to admire the way that Wright's Hammond B3 solos seemingly dance majestically atop the chunky, trombone and clarinet-sporting backing track.

Review: Outta Sight's latest monthly rare soul missive contains hard-to-find and overlooked classics from "hard-hitting" New Jersey vocal group Soul Brothers Six and New Orleans Rhythm and Blues man Willie Tee. It's the former's wonderfully sweet and loose "I'll Be Loving You" (first released in 1966, fact fans) that takes pride of place on the A-side, serving up a lightly sauteed soul take on the rhythm and blues template. Willie Tee's 1967 jam "Walking Up A One Way Street", a summery affair blessed with a superb horn section, leisurely groove and brilliant lead vocal from the man himself, can be found on the B-side.
