This fourth volume turns up the temperature once more, starting with Dave Barker's 'Move It On Now' with spoken word mic work over a guitar laced riddim. Woodfield Rd Allstars bring plenty of big horn energy and hints of ska to their 'San Salvario Stomp' then appear again on the flip with the organ-lead sounds of mid tempo wobbler 'Norwegian Wood'. His take on his hometown's house sound pairs gorgeous synths with steely drum work and new one 'Motor City Madness' backs that up. It's got the nice raw drums, the elastic bass and is smothered with synth goodness while incidental sax and trumpet pads bring the romance. A People Mover remix goes heavy on the jazz vibes with a broken beat workout, Underground Resistance take it deep and SHE Spells Doom jacks up those drums into something close to a UK funky take on Detroit house.

Review: The Heavy Beat label is almost at the not-so-small milestone of 50 releases. Ahead of that comes a 47th, and this time it is a reissue of a Wayne Wade jam from 1991 that has been reissued a number of times in various formats. The original is a dancehall-tinged sound with those subtle warrior leads and shiny digital synth sounds topped with an old school lover's rock vocal. The flipside version comes from Computer Paul and it slows things down so that sweet bass has more room and space to land and really make a mark.

Review: Tech house titan from Leeds wAFF has nothing to prove to anyone when it comes to party starting, riot inducing club smashers. Despite that, here he is launching a new label called Nature and delivering some of the fiercest tackle he's ever presented to the world, with lead track 'Colours' in particular turning heads with its canny blend of rampant arpeggios, catchy vocals and a beat to die for. It's a slickly produced workout which will infect the limbs of everyone in a five mile radius, no doubt. 'Django' is moodier, but no less thumping in the important places. 'Switchin' keeps the pressure up while sliding into a more streamlined house framework.

Review: Numbering Drifted's fifth release, we have an eye-opening collaborative project from Anna Wall and Corbi. A heady fusion of house and breaks, 'Satellite' is the ultimate energetic pumper that feels impressively true to the late 90s rave sound despite its recent production and pressing date. Review: Dark Entries are masters of reissuing the tunes that are out of the financial reach of many of us. This timeless and utterly singular slice of Italo disco magic was bootlegged originally back in around 2015 and then the label decided to reissue it properly in 2016, with a remastered set of tunes for maximum playback effect. They now issue a special 40th-anniversary version. The 1982 bombshell, originally out on Discomagic Records, goes by the name of 'The Man From Colours' and it is a special track indeed, one that's full of romantic charm, mystery and plenty of proto-house vibes. Its vocals will be embedded in your mind forever upon first listen, and you get an instrumental cut on the flip, too.

Review: Tyrone Washington's 'Submission' is a timeless gem that gets pressed up to 7" here both in original form but also with the masterful Kenny Dope remix on the flip. The A-side is a hard edge jazz number with squealing reeds and tumbling drums, chord stabs and an insistent and rather dark energy. Kenny makes it into a much more smooth number with drums that nails you to the floor. The sax stabs are more muted and fade into the background as the menacing chords come to the fore. Two vital tunes for the collection for sure.

This latest EP is the first installment in the new All Hands series and it features some real house heavyweights. Frits Wentink kicks off with the mystic and lo-fi depths of 'Jellyfish, then DJ Aakmael layers up his soft edge chords and cuddly kicks drums with some muted horn motifs that bring the romance. One of jungle techno architect Ron Wells' many aliases, both the lead track and the equally deep flipside 'Burning Bridges' can be seen as blueprint deep rollers. With its lilting pianos and dreamy vocal 'So Many Tears' was a big cut for DJs like Bukem at the time while 'Burning Bridges' took the groove deeper again making it a popular jam at the experimental epicentre that was Rage. It's a well-known classic every self-respecting reggae fan should know and blows up any party, especially when tweaked like these two versions. Review: Gamm has become known for its edits of disco, house and jazz classics but back in the day it used to drop red hot hip hop reworks of golden era sounds. It seems they are now getting back to that with this new three party 7" inch series which is focussed on the American east coast. Review: All we really know about this one is that The Wolf is an artist based in Berlin. He has started his own label here to serve up his latest studio concoctions and this first one is all about slamming minimal cuts. All of them are untitled in true underground minimal fashion, of course and the first one pairs rickety lines with under-lapping bass and dreamy chords. The second one heads to the stars with Detroit style pads smeared about the mix over punchy but stripped back rubber kick patterns and last of all is a more thumping deep house groove with more liquid pad work and a sense of serenity.

Review: Are Working Men's Club the best band to have emerged from northern England in the past decade? We'd say there's a very, very good chance. Catch them live on stage and Sydney Minsky-Sargeant, Liam Ogburn, Hannah Cobb and Mairead O'Connor are utterly captivating, and their combination of post punk, rock, electronica, and acid house transfers very well onto record too. Their DJ sets, for which 'Syd' leads the charge, are also nothing short of quality. Informed by genre-less masters such as Andrew Weatherall, Ivan Smagghe and Erol Alkan, as this latest Megamix goes to show, the idea is to create these deeply immersive cosmic soundscapes that aim directly for the dance floor, taking phrases and sounds from their songs, reworking, rethinking and rearranging them into something fresh and high energy. It is another one from the in-house production team of the same name who describe themselves as crate diggers turned re-editors from deepest Wales. Here they set off on a Balearic-minded disco trip with the soul-drenched 'Double Deb' before 'Boon Rocks', boasting an electric boogie feel with its staying analogue lines and stiff drums. Review: Ambient composer and improviser Tom Leclerc shares a series of moments with WILD in which the pair experiment and go off grid in their search for immersive ambient sounds. All of the session for this album on Giraffe Tape sharpened in the same day with a stripped back studio set up featuring minimalist synths and pedals. Both artist's own restive sounds meet in a new world where distant cosmic winds gently blow over pastural chord sequences. There is subtle movement in these tracks, some of which are darker and heavier than others which have more light, hope and joy.

Review: WAAN is something of a musical marriage between the well-travelled and well-seasoned saxophonist Bart Wirtz and keyboard star Emiel van Rijthoven. They have a real synergy in the studio that pays out across this record which is more than simply a jazz-influenced dance album. Both of these artists are tech nerds from the Netherlands and that comes out in the music here which has edgy keys with arpeggiators, sombre Ethiopian bass and drum grooves, voodoo beats and a freestyle feel born from the live manner in which much of the record was recorded.

Review: .For the latest volume in the label's essential J-Jazz Masterclass series of reissues, BBE has opted to deliver a new edition of a hard-to-find 1973 collaboration between American pianist Mal Waldron and Japanese trumpeter Terumasa Hino. Originally released only in Japan, it comprises two lengthy compositions (one by each artist) performed by the duo and talented sidemen Isao Suziki (upright bass), Motohiko Hino (drums), Takao Uematsu (alto sax) and Uzi Inamuro (percussion). Waldron's LP-opening composition adds alternating, increasingly hectic solos to a gradually intensifying groove (a formula the storied pianist used extensively during this period of his career), before morphing and mellowing as the suite progresses. Hino's 'Black Forest', meanwhile, is more up-tempo and horn-heavy, with oodles of extra percussion and expressive, mind-mangling solos aplenty.

Review: Wanderwelle & Bandhagens Musikforening's masterful Victory Over The Sun album gets skilfully reinterpreted by some of techno's most forward thinking protagonists. Amsterdam pair Wanderwelle themselves go first with a misty ambient take of 'An Unusual Sunrise' that sets a perfectly dramatic scene. Label boss Sverca serves up one of the highlights with his deep, pulsing hypnotic version of the title track and Anthony Linell sinks us way down below the ocean surface on his meditative dub roller. Live sounding, every breath, movement of hand down an acoustic guitar, and imperfection is captured in this expansive but intimate journeyman indie rock.

Review: Let's face it, Jack White has never really stood still, with the stream of solo projects put out since The White Stripes days proof of just how relentless his creative spark is. However, as many have pointed out in reviews of Fear of the Dawn, there's not been that much of a stylistic shift since his joint venture with Meg. As such prepare to be blown away with this latest effort. Although we're not going to say whether that's in a good or bad way.
To call the tracks here obscure is nothing short of horribly reductive. Review: If you remember Whitney - and let's face it, who doesn't considering their last full length was only 2019 and made a huge impression at the time - then prepare to admit you don't really know Whitney. Moving away, with some determination, from their indie folk roots, Spark is a glossy, smooth, sexy, and altogether high-production love affair with a very different side of sounds from the 1970s and 80s.
This is lush, glossy pop with funk and R&B undertones, at times breaking into No.1-worthy balladry, chords and keys cascading to the sounds of hearts breaking across the world. So rare is it in 2022 for a record to tread this unabashedly unifying path, rather than approach the charts with the songwriting talent of tomorrow's EDM chip paper, that's it's almost jarring. Full marks for making us remember what 'popular music' really means.

Review: Last spotted cavorting with his Nirvana-covering side project Blue Mode and previous operating as Kid Costa, killer flautist and composer Chip Wickham (real name Roger) delivers his debut LP on Lovemonk. Ranging from gentle wave lapping spiritualism of tracks such as "Tokyo Slow Mo" and the cinematic "Pushed Too Far" to much more frenetic, energetic cuts like "Le Leyenda Del Tiempo" by way of funkier, lolloping grooves like "The Detour", it's a beautiful, vibrant snapshot of Wickham's skills that will grow as the months get warmer. Review: Where do you start with 'Wild' Billy Childish? A true enigma, and a figurehead of the eccentric, anti-establishment British arts scene known for advocating amateurism, non-conformity and free emotional expression through creativity since the 1970s, co-founder of the Stuckism figurative painting movement, concerned with supposed Remodernist ideals which push back against the post-modern, it's almost easy to forget about his recording career in and among the book publishing, exhibitions, poems and Super 8 movies.
Thankfully, then, we have The Fighting Tameraire in our new releases pile to remind us that he's fundamentally a deft hand at writing, arranging, singing and performing lo-fi semi-traditional garage folk stuff that has one foot in the English pubs of bygone ages and another in contemporary alternative rock. This collection is rousing, emotive, witty, and thoroughly human in a way that feels increasingly rare today.

Review: Since first emerging three years ago, Harry Wills has built up quite a reputation, first as a maker of sub-heavy, garage-influenced tech-house jams and more recently via releases that blend melodious, bouncy house and techno sounds with nods towards broken beat, rave-era anthems, electro and IDM. Luxury Bedtime, his debut album and the inaugural release on Wills' new label Nimble, is generally warming, tuneful and atmospheric, with a mixture of attractive motifs and wonky electronics rising above beats that variously draw influence from tech-house, breaks, deep house, dubstep and electro. It's a gently eclectic beast for sure, but also a coherent and high-quality listen.

Review: Paketo Wilson's Praise Him is a cult roots album that is hard to find on the seance hand market. When you do, it will cost you a small fortune, so this reissue will be music to the ears of fans old and new. He proved it back in 1982 with Trevor Davis under the Child of God label in just one day. It has hints of lovers' rock over the nice reggae rhythms with vocals that touch on classic themes of peace, love and unity, the trials of ghetto life and losing those close. Bobby Ellis and Headley Bennett bring mystical horns to most tunes and help make them all the more spiritual. This is positive and heartwarming reggae from a top songwriter.

Review: Just over 40 years have passed since Paketo Wilson headed into the studio to record 'Praise Him' at Harry J Studio in his home city of Kingston, Jamaica. The album, which effortlessly blends roots and lovers rock with the help of producer Trevor Dais and a cast of musicians that includes legendary trumpeter Bobby Ellis, has long been an overlooked, hard-to-find gem - hence this timely reissue from Milanese imprint Arabusta Records. Wilson's honeyed voice remains the focal point throughout, with standouts including 'Jardan Dance', the subtly dubbed-out 'My Daily Bread', and the wonderfully life-affirming 'Jumpy For Joy'. Greatest hits in the late Camden-native's catalogue played live with a 6 piece band, 16 classics like 'Tears dry on their own' and 'Back to black' from her 2 albums are pressed on this double LP. Review: Zach Witness has plenty of fun on this new series of edits, remixes and bootlegs. They tap into all the cornerstones of house music - gospel vocals, ghetto grooves, soul, funk and deepness. 'Let House Reign' is a simple but effective opener with vocals that take you straight to church, while 'Lil Freak Mafia' is much more sleazy and dirty with its stacked up drums and bumping bass. Elsewhere there are big filter gems likes 'Int'l House Anthem', juke-adjacent cuts like 'Tom Ford Workout' and playful party starters like 'Trill House ENT'. A really useful collection, all in all.

There's absolutely no doubt in our mind Blue Weekend is a record Wolf Alice feel a sense of enormous personal satisfaction from. Of course time will tell if it can bag them another Top 5 position, or even a Mercury Prize nomination, but for all intents and purposes there's a real feeling of catharsis here. And it goes well beyond famously reserved singer Ellie Rowsell telling listeners she doesn't give a fuck if they like her.
The band's latest punches, bangs and has absolutely no time for dishonestly. In many ways, this is where they are fully realising influences that have always been present - grunge, punk, some of that 1990s British indie-garage-with-bite crossover stuff. But it's also a record that sees them realising just where they've got to, and now reaching for a louder and more prominent position on the main stage.

Review: Massachuessetts symphonic deathcore brutalisers, Worm Shepherd, made quite the statement of intent with 2020's 'In the Wake ov Sol'. On their sophomore effort, however, it now becomes abundantly clear just how much expansive venom the group have been harbouring. 'Ritual Hymns' builds upon its preceding debut with obliterating breakdowns, complex, frosted melodics and a weary, theatrical sense of nihilism that elevate epic centrepieces such as, 'Blood Kingdom' and 'A Bird In The Dusk' to a level of spectacle only tangentially approach on their debut.
