Review: Is that a snake in your boot or are you dancing like a crazy horse at this divine piece of honky tonking wild west funk? Created through a chance encounter in a shoe shop, Frankie Valentine and Thomas Sciurpa written something truly original here. Sitting somewhere between The Grid and Beyond The Wizards Sleeve, each version is a gallant trip through dusty plains with big instrumentation, a bareback sense of groove and more banjo pistol whips than your doctor would recommend. Let's hope more chance encounters happen in the future.

Soul To Skin (Inxec remix)
Review: The next release on Dream Diary comes from VTR, a hotly-tipped South London duo who merge various strains of electronic music with soul and pop songwriting nous. This debut EP was reportedly co-produced by Afriqua, who have been previously spotted on R&S as well as Dream Diary. "Soul To Skin" opens the EP in a mellow fog of ambient synths and arresting vocals that sound reminiscent of Stevie Nicks. That echo is confirmed on track two, a sultry cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" that will no doubt draw plenty of attention in the band's direction. "Whisper" taps up a little of James Blake's crooked blue-eyed soul, and watch out for long time tech house producer Inxec popping up to remix "Soul To Skin."

Review: For the latest volume in its ongoing Rollers mix series, V Recordings offshoot Chronic has asked experienced Brazilian DJ/producer L-Side to handle mixing duties. He naturally does a fine job, working his way through 21 tracks from such rising talents as Jaybee, Command Strange, Serum, Fiaco and Euphorics. The mix is naturally slick, with L-Side selecting cuts that tend towards the spacey and rolling, whilst retaining the punchy D&B breaks and cyber-sonic sub-bass that Chronic is renowned for. Highlights and plentiful, and include the revivalist jungle riddims of "Meditate" by Need For Mirrors, the bruising sub-bass and hip-hop vocal snatches of L-Side's "Soundclash", and the unstoppable weightiness of Command Strange's "Unlimited Bass".

Review: Klamm is the new label dedicated to the artistic output of Saele Valese. After "Ivic", a collection of old and new materials published on Alva Noto's label (NOTON) at the beginning of the year, Saele Valese releases now his first real album "A White, White Day". Written and recorded between 2018 and 2021 the material of this work was sliced, glued and recreated several times, just like a filmmaker in the editing process, before finding its final form. Inspired indeed by the most poetic cinema, 'A White, White Day' represents, in the form of a non-linear and enigmatic narrative, a personal and psychological reflection on time, memory and dreams. Mastered by Rashad Becker.

Review: Waze & Oddysey's W&O Streetracks imprint pulls together the likes of Eliphino, Ejeca, Citizen and XXXY for its first (unmixed) compilation released this Winter, W&O Streettracks Vol 1. Having clocked up eight releases on Street Tracks, it's the ideal time to throw down a milestone and document the sound of the label in one package and W&O Street Tracks does so with panache. The result of Waze & Oddyssey's plunge into their address book is a 12 track compilation that neatly reflects modern house music. Ejeca, Citizen and W&O themselves sit alongside newcomers like Mediman and Sage Caswell while the emergent talents of New Jack City and Eliphino make for a nicely profiled piece of work

Tommy Awards - "Sessions II Untitled Track 1" (Balearic remix)
Review: It's that time of year when thoughts turn to lazy afternoons down the beach, early evenings sat watching White Isle sunsets and sticky nights of loved-up debauchery. In other words, it's the perfect time to dive into the latest volume in the consistet Balearic compilation series. There's naturally much to admire in the now-familiar Cafe Del Mar/Cafe Mambo style, from the horizontal, flute-laden samba shuffle of The Madrigal's "The Ride to the Moon" and Shay Lovers exceedingly drowsy "Black & White", to the warm chords and head-nodding beats of Steve Cobby's remix of "Tradewinds" by Penelope Antena, and tropical exuberance of Maajo's "Musa Paradisa". Best of all, though, is Mudd's impeccable "Mix for Emma" of Zee Erf's blissful cover of "Southern Freeez", which is one of the most stunning tracks you'll hear all year.

Hello Skinny - "Hello Skinny" (bonus beat)
Robert Logan - "Accurate Spit Boy" (Bass Clef remix)
Crewdson - "Cascade" (Snorkel remix)
Charley Marlowe - "Shining Star"
Review: Given that they've been releasing impressive and unusual music since 2001, it seems remarkable that this is the first compilation from the admirable Slowfoot Records. For those who've yet to check the label's releases, it should be essential listening. Veering from Krautrock influenced jazz madness (Snorkel's post punk inclined "Stop Machine", Monkey Puzzle Trio's "Knight, Rook, Bishop") to bleary-eyed folk (Charley Marlowe's "Shining Star"), via wonk-hop (Robert Logan's broken MPC jam "Error Message") and skittering IDM (Hello Skinny's "Hello Skinny"), Leaving Jet Trails paints a picture of a label at the top of its game. Given the quality of material on show, it would be rude not to check it out.
