World Of Rubber 1 (white vinyl 12" + insert)

Techno
Alessandro Adriani - "Death Moves" (5:12)
0 5W - "Aluco" (6:30)
Unit Moebius, Reverend Cor Gout & Salo Mentale - "Fietsenmaker" (12:28)
Review: Enter the World of Rubber. A new label endeavour from the hallowed Lowlands area of Den Haag surfaces in the shape of Rubber which launches with a most curious various artists 12". Alesandro Adriani is more commonly known for his curatorial skills at the head of Mannequin Records, but the Italian can clearly sequence a track on the basis of his opener "Death Move 1" which certainly sounds like he had the guttural sounds of The Hague in mind! Rubbing up alongside Adriani on the A-side is 0 5W, a Finnish techno project whose unpredictable "Aluco" will appeal to fans of the Borft label. Some Den Haag heritage lines the B-side as a slightly unnerving track from the mid-90s archives of Unit Moebius is given pride of place. We await further Rubber transmissions with interest!

The Advent - "Radar 06" (7:31)
Sedvs - "Come Clean" (5:38)
Bas Mooy & Jeroen Liebregts - "Ash" (7:06)
Under Black Helmet - "Message" (5:52)
Review: Those seeking out the hardest, no holds barred techno need look no further than the latest Mord release. On Herdersmat Part 23, the esteemed Dutch label presents four furious tracks by some of the scene's heaviest hitters. On side A, the one-and-only Cisco Ferreira returns under The Advent alias with the proper old school techno vibe of 'Radar 06', followed by the functional DJ tool by Sedvs 'Come Clean' which is proper tackle for tripping out under the strobe. Over on the second side of the disc, you'll be banged into submission by a couple of seething industrial-edged cuts; label staple Bas Mooy teams up with Jeroen Liebregts on the seething 'Ash' and closing it out with the Code Is Law affiliated Under Black Helmet on 'Message'.

Review: Dutch label Illegal Alien is rightly celebrating its last 16 years in existence. It's doing so with a bumper collection of 44 exclusive tracks from 46 of its best artists across an eight-volume vinyl and digital series. The series not only traces the label's evolution, but that of techno itself and this sixth outing once again offers no-nonsense, heady and atmospheric techno that is both physical and inventive. Legendary names old and new like Fixon, The Advent, Cari Lekebusch & Orion and Mari Mattham & Jessse all contribute a range of essential dancefloor weapons.

AJ Franklin & The Inn House Crew - "Where You Gonna Run To" (feat UK Principal & Vin Gordon - version) (4:17)
Review: The Inn House Crew are well known instrumental reggae producers who have made Room In The Sky their regular home. Their second release this month is a tasty hook up with AJ Franklin, UK Principal and Vin Gordon. "Where You Gonna Run To" is a popping dub fleshed out with cavernous drums and bass that sit together perfectly. Synth details and hits spit out and horns drift to sooth your soul. The effervescing vocals version on the flip injects a dose of warmth to an already steamy cut. Another standout effort from this ever reliable crew.

The Very Polish Cut Outs Sampler Vol 4

Disco/Nu-Disco
Karol Aleksander - "Witajcie W Moim SwiecieI" (5:29)
Karol Aleksander - "Ja" (6:08)
Radar & Unitrax - "Diamentowa Kula" (6:51)
Selvy - "Piec Minut Lez" (6:35)
Review: Very Polish Cut-Outs boss Zambon recently announced that the in-demand series would soon come to an end. Before then, though, there are a few more 12" singles due, starting with this fourth sampler. Karol Aleksander handles side A, opening with the slightly housed-up rolling disco of "Witajcie W Moim Swieciel" (think cut-glass strings, bouncy grooves, spacey synthesizers and heavy filters). "Ja"is a keys-laden, progressive disco-house roller, while Radar & Unitrax join forces on the strobe-lit, surprisingly exotic disco smasher "Diamentowa Kula". Another superb volume is rounded off by regular contributor Selvy, whose "Plec Minut Lez" is a Ptaki style Balearic-meets-AOR disco gem.

Five To Nine (5:23)
Hate Thy Neighbor (4:25)
Entschuldigung (4:50)
Cannibals (4:57)
Review: The latest missive in the L.I.E.S. ongoing series of collaborative EPs brings together Cititrax regular An-I (AKA sometime leftfield disco maverick Doug Lee) and Berlin-based experimental electronics maverick Unhuman. The pair begins in forthright fashion, moving from the racing drum machine heartbeats, rhythmic noise and mangled yelps of "Five To Nine", to the doomy bass, triple-time beats and clanking metallic hits of post-punk number "Hate Thy Neighbour". Over on side B they mutilate electro beyond almost all recognition on the alien insanity of "Entschuldigung" before lolloping towards a conclusion with the fuzzy industrial funk thrust of "Cannibals".

Roman & Boyd Chidt - "Self-Deprivation" (6:13)
Silent Servant - "Manic" (4:56)
Unhuman & Vulkanski - "Mescaline Network" (6:05)
Review: Khidi rolls out another anniversary EP here and it is another various artists affair that takes no prisoners. On their opener, Ancient Methods & OTHR bring some hellish metal and industrial overtones to the stomping, vicious 'Vast Vanishing' with its horror-core vocals. Roman & Boyd Chidt don't let up but offer a more linear and streamlined bit of stomping techno pressure. Silent Servant unleashes lashings of metallic synths over his signature tech sounds and then the floating loops of Unhuman & Vulkanski suspend you just above a rusty old factory floor.

Ancient Methods - "Accept Light" (6:06)
Umwelt - "Shades Of Obscurity" (5:42)
Review: There is no messing when it comes to the techno served up by Umwelt's essential Rave Or Die. Over the course of 14 previous EPs the label has dropped rib-rattling, brain boggling bangers aimed squarely at the floor. This time out the boss himself steps up with Ancient Methods with each providing one solo track. This one comes on limited 10" picture disc so is an extra special one to add to the collection Ancient Methods's 'Accept Light' is a harshly textured industrial banger and Umwelt's 'Shades of Security' is just as caustic and hard edged.

Guy Andrews - "Resistivity"
Untold - "Under"
Review: The second vinyl of Chapter One exclusives sees Guy Andrews and Untold showcasing out their own unique brands of bass heavy techno. Andrews is no stranger to Untold's imprint, having released the excellent Shades/Textures on the label last year, though "Resistivity" treads a straighter path than those drum & bass inspired tracks, providing five minutes of searing, percussive 4/4 swathed in reverb with a noisy convergence of pulsating synth lines. Untold's "Under" sees the producer continue the work he started on his Change In A Dynamic Environment EPs, with stray sonar bleeps and a crackly aesthetic elevating a solid rhythm-based DJ tool into something with all the tension and drama of a classic DMZ track.

Hive - "Neo" (Audio remix)
June Miller & Nymfo - "Misfits"
Unknown Error - "Rising" (feat Janine Small)
Xtrah - "The Base"
Review: Four of the hundred plus cuts featured on the monolithic Nightlife 6 masterpiece, there's no better seal of approval in D&B. Hive's "Neo" originally featured on the debut Nightlife mix 10 years ago. Now back with a pressure cooker rub from Audio, it still kills to this day. June Miller & Nymfo provide a haunted house vibe complete with paranoid guitars and gravel gut bass while Unknown Error reps D&B's soulful side with the gorgeous piano-thumping "Rising". Xtrah completes this part with another impeccable body-slammer. All rim shots and droning subs, this one's designed for the darkest hours.

Ansome - "Vakuum" (5:09)
Umwelt - "Affres" (5:09)
Review: For the latest single on Umwelt's essential Rave or Die label, the Lyon-based producer finds himself sharing vinyl space with Perc Trax regular Ansome. The South London producer handles side A, assaulting the senses via distorted breakbeats, chilling, held-note horror strings and gory electronic riffs on the industrial techno insanity of "Vakuum". Umwelt's track, "Affres", explores similar sonic territory, though his use of macabre audio loops, redlined electronics and rapid-fire, ray gun drumbeats gives the track a much more rolling and hypnotic feel. Both cuts are wild-eyed and aggressive in tone, even if they are every bit as sci-fi as classic Detroit cuts.

Apex - "Echoes" (5:16)
Unknown Error - "The Yearning" (Super VIP mix) (9:24)
Review: It's been seven months now since the death of Rob Dickeson AKA Apex stunned the drum and bass community. "Echoes" is the last known track that Dickeson completed and is being released by Hospital Records in order to raise funds for Help Musicians UK's Music Minds Matter campaign. It's rather good, too, with poignant pianos, stirring strings and melancholic chords floating over a snappy, liquid funk beat. It's accompanied on the flipside by a fantastic, floor-friendly "Super VIP" mix of "Yearning", a soaring 2006 cut Dickeson produced alongside Jim Gash as Unknown Error. Top tracks and a worthy cause: this should be an essential purchase for D&B heads everywhere.

Aquarian Atmosphere - "Rhiannon"
Review: Re:discovery has got a superbly illusive reissue eon its hands here with 1993's Clouds Over Europe EP from Aquarian Atmosphere, 39626 and Unit 2. It is a cosmic deep tendon voyage that tingles all of your sense as you ride on the gloriously serene synths of opener 'White Clouds'. It is one of the three tunes from Aquarian Atmosphere, the others being 'Floating On Boyne' a dreamy downtempo number that leaves you gazing at the stars and also 'Rhiannon', a thinking melodic masterpiece. 39626' 'Elixir Of Life' is an intense mix of synth modulations and minimal rhythm and Unit 21s' 'Clubtraxx' (Movement 1 - unreleased version) is pure Detroit techno goodness.

Since launching a couple of years ago, the Shamandrum label has exclusively offered up occasional EPs that feature founder Barac collaborating with other producers from within the worldwide tech-house scene. This time round it's the mysterious Ursul, who are research suggests is a Moscow-based producer and studio engineer. You'll find their collaboration, "Aura De Magie Si Mister" on side B. Built around African style tribal drums and weirdo electronics, it's a deep and intoxicating percussion workout that sounds like it should be the musical accompaniment to a sunrise pagan ritual. Barac's solo A-side, "At The Moment", is a little closer to his usual fare and offers an ear pleasing blend of bubby bass, psychedelic electronics, gently descending melodies and a hypnotic, deep tech-house groove.

Review: For the label's first compilation, Cabaret Records has decided to introduce us to their Alien Family. By the sounds of the collection, they're a motley crew of studio mutants united by a love of creaking hardware, sci-fi synths and intergalactic dancefloor workouts. Happily, highlights are plentiful, from the acid-fired, bleep-heavy throb of S-Audio's "Remote Circuit" and weighty electro crackle of Binh's "Wova", to the dreamy underwater deepness of EK Box's "Watair" and the classic deep house/Detroit techno fusion of So Inagawa's futurist masterpiece "Solitary Affair". Evan Baggs's contribution, the TB-303 madness that is "AZS", is also superb.

Lionsong (Choral mix) (4:50)
Review: One of several intriguing artists to be commissioned to rework music from Bjork's Vulnicura album, Hemlock boss Untold takes a novel approach on his Chroal mix of "Lionsong". Bolstered by additional vocal tones from the same choir that appeared on previous Bjork LP Biophilia, Untold seeks rhythmic inspiration from his own discography, specifically "Flexible". The track originally appeared as a single-sided 12" back in 2009, and it brims with the madcap energy of early Untold beats, all woodblock percussion and scuffed found sound snippets. It's an unlikely partnership of sounds, but the legacy of Bjork's distinctive voice atop edgy electronics makes the whole wild cocktail go down smooth.

Review: Black Devil Disco Club returns to action on LoEB with "Ride Again", a collection of mixes from his "In Dub" album. First up is the Prins Thomas mix of "On Just Foot", a chugging Italo disco groover led by a rolling arpeggiated b-line, quirky analogue stabs, vocoder vocal hits and wicked conga-laden beats. Proper floor-pleasing Italo workout. Next we have the Unit 4 mix of "An Other Skin", more b-line driving space disco with dark sounds and huge synth lines. 5's Up
Review: Further developing his new venture Unknown Shapes, Kwesi Darko is back at Black Acre and in a forthright mood that swaps downtempo dread for rave hysteria of the most fearsome kind. Lead track "Used To Give A FK" slugs heavy on a half time beat which gets offset by some urgent arpeggiating and the titular vocal sample, steadily rising in a purple-informed swell of melody without ever getting too saccharine. "Rick Ross" meanwhile is pure venom, spitting out a terrifying string hook while the two-note bass drum booms out a death march of powerful proportions. "5's Up" is no softer with its monolithic brass swells signalling a looming end of days scenario through the power of the low end.

Review: Kwesi Darko returns with his first original Blue Daisy material since his weirdly underrated debut album The Sunday Gift from last year, teaming up with the unexplained entity Unknown Shapes for the six-track EP Bedtime Stories. One listen through and it's clear Darko has been taking his time perfecting a set of tracks with a breathtaking attention to detail and texture, and it takes a few more listens for all its subtle intricacies to truly show. It would be easy to cite everyone from James Blake to Burial to the majority of the Tri Angle roster to provide some context for tracks such as "Insomniac Love" or "Wet Dreams" but such comparisons don't really do justice to the cavernous soundscapes that Blue Daisy and the Unknown Shapes have cast on Bedtime Stories. The moments in the title track where ripples of purple funk break free alone are worth investigating.

It's jam packed with six of the best breaks, bleeps and bass tunes, prickly analogue drum programming and future leads that immediately place you in a room full of smoke, lasers flashing by and strobes going mental. Bohm's 'Trouble' is a textbook take on this style, while Neil Landstrumm layers up bright melodies and refracts them around a punchy techno framework on 'Body Popper.' Meat Beat Manifesto's 'Destroy Dub' is a wild furry of drums and another gem on an EP full of them.

As proved by these two savage collaborations. "Orders" sees him teaming up with old mate Logos for a hammering halftime vibe that pays respect to the traditions but does with a slight techno twist. Flip for "The Mould" where the breaks come out in full force. A proper swinging jam with wild drums and an elasticated bassline, there's nice nod to the turn of the century dark garage and early Bingo feel as we're pushed and shunted into bassy parts unknown. Sentry just keep on smashing it.

Busty Brown - "My Girl" (3:23)
Upsetters - "My Girl" (3:14)
Review: Busty Brown's early reggae cover of the Temptations' smash hit "My Girl" from 1964 is presented here in all its glory. It's a glorious makeover that has soaring trumpets filled with optimism, deep cut drums that wriggle and rumble nonstop, as well as Brown's buttery, authentic vocals up top. Legendary dub outfit The Upsetters then take care of an instrumental on the flip side that goes a little slower and more purposefully about its business. It's not often that a cover outshines the original but in the case of this one, that might be what's happening here.

Review: Vinyl Only reach their seventh release with a fresh grip of lesser known producers bringing high grade grooves to the table. Bubbadog opens the 12" up in a woozy fashion with the warbling piano chords of "Goin' Round", capturing a time-slip mood that carries through to the dusty jazz soaked beat down of Minus The Majors' "Strole On Through". On the B-side, Alex Zuiev gets into an exotic, chiming, 80s-inflected mood on "Down By The River", creating a slow-burning dancefloor heater out of classic ingredients. Ugly Frankie finishes the EP off with the stripped down funk of "Your Ears Look Great".

RD Burman - "Pyar Karnewale" (feat Asha Bhosle)
Review: The Sitar Beat series is built with the DJ in mind - collecting some of the wildest, heaviest and most psychedelic Indian funk recorded and presenting it loud, and ready for the turntable. The first four volumes were assembled by one Indian music aficionado... For the first time, a "guest compiler" was brought in to lace you with some obscure goodies for volume five. As always, we continue the dig into Indian deep funk and psycho-psychedelic masterpieces recorded for the Bollywood film industry. And this time we're even going straight to Indian VHS Videotapes to issue incidental music never before released on vinyl... Sitar Beat Volume Five offers up the sought after title track from RD Burman's "Burning Train" soundtrack alongside Indo-disco (including one helluva Kraftwerk rip off!) and promises to be the first time that many of these songs are heard by the record-buying public - at least in this form. Edits remove any bobbing and weaving, leaving funk that only flies straight ahead!

Claro Intelecto - "Fighting The Blind Man"
Gerry Read - "Granny Bag"
Unbroken Dub - "Spacing"
Review: Claro Intelecto, Gerry Read and Unbroken Dub feature on the first 12" in a series of five from Dutch label Delsin primed to celebrate reaching 100 releases. Founded back in 1996, Delsin have undoubtedly slipped past this number if you factor in all the reissues, one off releases and their rejuvenated Ann Aimee sub label, but everyone loves a special edition release so lets not nit pick. You can expect material from Sawlin, Conforce, Redshape, Mike Dehnert, Delta and Newworldaquarium on subsequent 100DSR/VAR drops and the series is inaugurated in fine style here. "Fighting The Blind Man" is classic scatterbrained Claro Intelecto, whilst "Granny Bag" demonstrates that Read's wild side has not been tamed by his swift rise in popularity over the past year or so. Siberian producer Unbroken Dub manages to sound both calming and slightly foreboding on the excellent final cut "Spacing".

MDXLIV (10:33)
Review: Sardinia's Claudio Prc, or Claudio Porceddu in his native tongue, has come a long way thanks to a succession of releases for Munich's Prologue institution, and the young techno craftsman returns to his own The Gods Planet with an effective two-tracker alongside Unc. The duo have laid out a pair of dark and hawk-eyed rhythmic cuts for the deepest and loudest of dancefloors; the first missile to hit the speakers is "MDCCXVIII", a cavernous techno belter with mounds of delay and devious atmospheric trickery, while the flipside sees "MDXLIV" pound its way left, right and centre backed by another truck-load of cinematic soundscapes and chilling sonics. Heavy stuff.

Review: Italy's TGP label has been a strong presence in the more wayward division of the house and techno game since 2010, and this has been thanks to the persistence and unifying vision of its most regular artists. Here, they team up in fine style on the label's third instalment of the TGPEXTRA series, with Claudio PRC and UNC leading the pack with "CXXV", a sombre, minimalistic techno deviation with just the right hint of dubby haze. "III" by Blazej Malinowski is an equally sparse and aqueous affair, stretching cold beats and placid stars of bass over a consistently shifting backdrop of soft harmonies and industrial sonics.

Review: If you like your techno murky and subterranean then Node has got another doozy of a 12" for you. It is a six track various artists EP that comes on silver marbled vinyl and opens with the sleazy underworld sounds of 'Selva Oscura' from Conceptual. Orbe's 'Thorax' then goes down a deep, dark late night techno tunnel in mind melting fashion and Sciahri's deft loops on 'No Fear' leave you feeling utterly in the moment. The hypnosis continues on the flip with darker drum rumbles from Farceb, constant suspense from 'Dario Duegra' and magnificently weighty minimalism from Uun.

Review: Originally released back in 2011, this split LP from Unicorn Hard On and Container is back on a fresh pressing through the Hot Releases label overseen by Ryan Martin aka Secret Boyfriend. Valerie Martino's superbly-named Unicorn Hard On takes the A-side with the bubblegum outsider house of "Persian Cats" complemented by the jagged and angular beat assault of "Wildfire Girls" which also features her howling and heavily processed vocals. On the flip is fellow analogue noise merchant and all round badass Ren Schofield aka Container whose offering "Cauterize" is business as usual; pounding, rusty and abrasive techno that plays by its own rules and why this guy really does have his own sound.

Review: Following their first boom-bap flavoured collaboration with Crimson Alchemist, last year's 'Storytelling', Diess Productions regulars Mister Modo and Ugly Mac Beer once again join forces with the underground MC for a similarly retro-futurist hip-hop throwdown. Crimson Alchemist's Q-Tip-esque rap sounds superb on both versions, both of which boast fat, toe-tapping beats and tons of nods towards Mister Modo and Ugly Mac Beer's turntablist roots. The A-side 'Donut Mix' is the slightly bouncier of the two takes, with tidy organ motifs and sweeping synth-strings, while the flipside 'Serious Mix' revolves around some killer horn samples and a descending bassline.

Local lad Crown Prince Of Waterford (not to be confused with the legendary blues singer) lays down a furiously funky jam about having fun at the fairground while fellow Emerald Isle strutter Island Times returns Fatty Fatty with a loose-limbed falsetto-loaded twanger. Review: Claremont 56's main man Mudd gets busy with two remixes of Holger Czukay and U She's "La Premiere", getting nice and slow to worm a lazy kind of shuffle into the original track from all-round Krautrock legend Czukay. The "Ode To Phreek" remix is a loungey track that hops along with quite a spring in its groove, as muted guitar strikes drive everything along behind U She's mournful tone. The "Garden" mix does slip a more prominent kick into the mix whilst subtly dubbing out certain elements in a coolly executed celebration of eclecticism.

Encompassing musicians, producers, photographers and singers, Untitled Gear sound like quite the sprawling group but there's a sense of cohesion and tightness to the four tracks here. Falling deftly into the pocket of jazz influenced house that Vakula has helped pioneer, Untitled Gear sound best when vocalists are employed, see the stupendously cosmic throb of "Nothing Is Over" and the sultry swagger of "Flying High". It's as strong as you'd expect, with highlights including the heavyweight, delay-laden disco-funk brilliance of Dimitri From Brooklyn's "Hooked On This Feeling" (a dub disco revision of an old Frank Hooker jam by Dimitri From Paris), the Clavinet-driven, piano-laden peak-time hustle of Joey Negro's "Let's Get Ornery", the Clarinet and trumpet-sporting hedonism of Jacques Renault's emotive and heart-tugging "Said I Would" and the screaming, hands-aloft rush of Superprince's "Dependable". Fittingly, label co-fouder JKriv delivers one of the standouts, a rolling revision of an Italo-style, arpeggio-driven delight titled "Lovin' Lasers".

Review: It's a new Palham Music episode, people! The German label has been at the forefront of the house-techno underground for over ten years now, and thanks to releases by artists such as Lowtec and The Analog Roland Orchestra, among others, Dan Bust's imprint has always been given the respect it deserves. For their new, limited Purple Series, it's Cologne's Ugly Drums who comes through with his singular brand of funked-up dance music! "Scorpio Things Related" is a Theo Parrish Kinda tune - jittery percussion and sweet chords - while "Can't Take You Down is deeper and more cerebral thanks to its broken beat and lower-than-low-end! On the flip, "Spend With It" showcases some more of Ugly Drums' inimitable percussion flex, whereas "Stick With It" is pure soulful house magic. Ah, what a load of sweet cuts! Screen-printed jackets!
