AJ Franklin & The Inn House Crew - "Where You Gonna Run To" (feat UK Principal & Vin Gordon - version) (4:17)
Review: The Inn House Crew are well known instrumental reggae producers who have made Room In The Sky their regular home. Their second release this month is a tasty hook up with AJ Franklin, UK Principal and Vin Gordon. "Where You Gonna Run To" is a popping dub fleshed out with cavernous drums and bass that sit together perfectly. Synth details and hits spit out and horns drift to sooth your soul. The effervescing vocals version on the flip injects a dose of warmth to an already steamy cut. Another standout effort from this ever reliable crew.

Busty Brown - "My Girl" (3:23)
Upsetters - "My Girl" (3:14)
Review: Busty Brown's early reggae cover of the Temptations' smash hit "My Girl" from 1964 is presented here in all its glory. It's a glorious makeover that has soaring trumpets filled with optimism, deep cut drums that wriggle and rumble nonstop, as well as Brown's buttery, authentic vocals up top. Legendary dub outfit The Upsetters then take care of an instrumental on the flip side that goes a little slower and more purposefully about its business. It's not often that a cover outshines the original but in the case of this one, that might be what's happening here.

Lifestyle (Donut mix) (3:26)
Lifestyle (Serious mix) (3:31)
Review: Following their first boom-bap flavoured collaboration with Crimson Alchemist, last year's 'Storytelling', Diess Productions regulars Mister Modo and Ugly Mac Beer once again join forces with the underground MC for a similarly retro-futurist hip-hop throwdown. Crimson Alchemist's Q-Tip-esque rap sounds superb on both versions, both of which boast fat, toe-tapping beats and tons of nods towards Mister Modo and Ugly Mac Beer's turntablist roots. The A-side 'Donut Mix' is the slightly bouncier of the two takes, with tidy organ motifs and sweeping synth-strings, while the flipside 'Serious Mix' revolves around some killer horn samples and a descending bassline.

Luv N Liv (Dub Gabriel None Shall Escape The dub mix)
Luv N Liv (Ming vs Subatomic Sound System remix)
Review: Highly limited and sonically stunning, this special 7" taken from Gabriel's Raggabass Resistance album, neither of these versions have seen the light of day before. And, according to the label, they're not likely to see it after this limited press. Gabriel's own version is authentic dub to the very core: rich organic instrumentation, a huge spacious bass and full emphasis on the groove. Dim Mak's Ming and Lee Perry's own Subatomic Sound System provide the contemporary version; squidgy, squelchy and full of surprises, it's a neat reminder of dubstep's innate funkiness. We're luvin' it!

Hard World (3:33)
Review: They say great things come in pairs, and this is certainly true for these two new Sofrito bombs. However, unlike its companion, SSS016 is more of a boogie monster, and Gordon Henderson's "The Highest Bidder" is a tune that is just so easily hummed thanks to its inimitable vocal, while "Hard World" is more of a stone-cold floor-filler with its fast-paced groove and gritty electronic feel. Both unmissable, both total killers. No surprises here - Sofrito doing what the label does best.

Dub The Bass (3:07)
Review: Uprising Sounds returns to Indica with a powerful original and even heavier version. "Militant Dub" leads heavily on the main synth line that's almost oriental in its allure and mysticism. As the title suggests, the rhythm is persistent and just on the right side of rigid to maintain the essential funk. "Dub The Bass" is a much deeper exploration of the low end as the warping bass is allowed to turn itself inside out as the track progresses. Standard Indica procedure: only 500 have been pressed.

Both of these magnificent versions of this lovely track are a few years old but are making their vinyl debut here. Many of them are hard to find or totally out of print, but labels like Roots Vibration have done a fine job of bring them back into the game. This time out it is Hands & Hearts that serve up his 'Ten Thousand Of Them.' It's a timeless roller with fat drums that sit perfectly with the even fatter bass. Review: Mukatsuku presents the second volume of killer Ghanaian highlife/afrofunk monsters this time focusing on two artists legendary in the genre. First up first time on a 45 from 1980 is '' What Is Life '' from the Ebo Taylor & Uhuru Yenzu album ''Conflict Nkru! ''. Amazing brass, flute and afrocentric rhythms lay the path for the track once heard never forgotten. On the flip first time ever on a 45 Pat Thomas who features on volume 1 of the series comes correct with possibly the best version (and there are a few ) of ''Gyae Su'' . With its jangly african guitar licks and infectious chorus lines the feel good factor is set to maximum. Review: There's a mild Latin theme running across both sides of the latest Big Crown 45". First up Paul Ramous covers cult Latin funk band Mandrill's "Fence Walk" with a surging, urgent sense of soul while on the flip we're taken back to the Bay Area late 60s/early 70s as Afro Blue Persuasion's Ulysses Crockett lays down a laid back, slightly fuzzy freeform vibraphone jam in the form of "Funky Resurgence". Sprightly, light-touched and primed for spring, Big Crown have spoilt us big time here.

Hey DJ (feat Shiro Schwarz) (5:01)
Tell Me If You Still Care (feat Lee Wilson) (6:06)
Review: Saucy Lady's last collaboration with fellow Japanese native U-Key (real name Yukihiro Kanesaka), 2018's 'It's All Here', remains one of the standout cuts in the Star Creature catalogue. Given the label's incredible track record, that's no mean feat! Hopes are naturally sky-high then for this belated sequel, which sees them switch to Star Creature's sister label Tugboat Editions. Shiro Schwartz joins in the fun on A-side 'Hey DJ', a typically boogie-fired chunk of melodious city pop revivalism that ticks all the right boxes. Lee Wilson makes a guest appearance on the similarly glossy - and arguably more city pop-inspired - flip-side 'Tell Me If You Still Care', an eyes-closed male/female duet of the kind that were all the rage in the 1980s.

Urfali Babi - "Disco Kebab" (Baris K edit)
Review: The third volume of edits on the Istanbul 70 series, from purveyor of Turkish jams Baris K, gives the listener two reworks that translate to both the dancefloor and the bedroom. Nazan Soray's "Halhal" opens the record, with Baris K departing from the more traditional sounds of Vol.I. The first track lays down a classic disco beat, gently nudging its listener forward with epic strings, trembling percussion and New York break straight out of Paradise Garage. The remix of Urfali Babi's "Disco Kebab" ups the pace, the bass line knocking its way through the beat while scraping guitar licks keep time for the whistling pads and guttural vocal murmurings of Urfali Babi. A very interesting release.

It is the rich heritage of Latin underground sounds he leans on most as he threads together his own edits of classics from that world into two steamy new jams. Review: U makes his 7" debut for Where To Now, and offers a great example of why the MPC machine should never be limited to MPC-sounding beats. It's a versatile instrument in the right hands, and there's no question in our minds that the producer in question here has the right hands. Offering three snapshots of a mind evidently packed with far-reaching, varied ideas, the musicality is surprising considering the process and the concepts at play utterly breathtaking.

From '2 Good 4 Me''s manipulated-yet-deep drum patterns, reversing in and out in a playful way while being cast in the dim light of a rainy, moody overhead arrangement, to the stepping, shuffle-inducing 'Almost Man', and its jazz-infused, candlelit vocal sections, this is quite possibly the most sophisticated electronic music you'll hear in some time.

Review: U2 are back with a brand new single, the single-sided record edition of 'Atomic City', produced by Jacknife Lee and Steve Lillywhite. Pre-empting the band's upcoming residency at Sphere in Las Vegas - a venue fit for the band's stature - the track is a hip-shaking, knee-slapping call into the unknown, hearing lead singer and public favourite Bono singing of lamented lost futures and calls for the city of Las Vegas to reckon with itself, referencing its status as a hotbed of 1950s nuclear tourism. This limited edition vinyl copy comes on alabaster transparent 7" vinyl, and the B-side features an exclusive etching.

Review: First released on green vinyl in 2008 and almost impossible to find since, "Synthetic Substitution" is an instrumental cover version of a celebrated Melvin Gill tune by The Undercover Brother, AKA Kenny Dope collaborator Victor Piagneri. The A-side "Instrumental Mix" re-creates the original version's famous groove, layering it with Clavinet lines, fluid pianos and spacey synth solos not evident on Gill's early '70s original. Arguably even better is the "Melody Mix", which adds in some fine George Benson style jazz guitar solos while retaining the familiar breakbeats, bassline and pianos. If you missed out first time around, we'd recommend copping a copy.

Review: Nubian Crackers member The Undercover Brother (AKA veteran Queens, New York-based beat-maker Victor Piagneri) fires up his U.B.'s project and delivers another taster for the forthcoming "Ultimate Covers w/Breaks" LP. On the A-side you'll find his instrumental interpretation of Frederick Knight cut "Uphill Peace Of Mind", a heavy, stripped-back revision rich in killer drum breaks, Red Hot Chili Peppers style funk-rock guitars and life-affirming piano solos. Turn to the flip for Piagneri's vocal-free version of The Honey Drippers' 1973 anti-Nixon anthem "Impeach The President". He allows the track's much-sampled opening drum break a little more room to breathe, before carefully layering up Hammond organ riffs and a snaking saxophone solo that effectively replaces the original vocals.

It has some country-style harmonica built into the raw beats and plenty of psyched-out guitar lines that bring Americana vibes to the percolating rhythms. Review: Achim Dauerfisch, Achim Treu, Doc Troid, Kunstler Treu are all part of the oddball crew known as UFO Hawaii, an outfit specialising in all things to the left of field, and that means anything from post-punk to exotica, and beyond! Here, they appear as remixers, predictably remixing their own tune, the wacky "Zeichen Der Zeit", into a zesty little coldwave monster for the Neo-romantics and B-side diggers alike! The second remix comes from Fred und Luna, a fictional duet invented by outsider Rainer Buchmuller, who quickly drops his own vocal love on Hawaii's already bizarre original cut. As you'd expect, the results are fabulous, and surely give hope to all those thinking that post-punk is dead.

Review: There's been a lot of online chatter about this blink-and-you'll-miss-it release, a perfectly pitched debut from the DJar One's freshly minted Beats House remix series. Fittingly, Djar One handles side A, offering up a suitably fat and insatiably funky revision of Ultimate Force's "Tuff". Utilising thick drum beats, on-point scratches, hazy horn blasts and occasional snatches of the "Apache" break, the French DJ/producer re-imagines the cut as a floor-friendly boom-bap smasher. Pal Kesta is in similarly good form on the flip, where he offers up a heavy but bouncy take on Large Professor's "Key To The City" that's full of razor-sharp scratches, breakdancing-friendly drums and all manner of classic hip-hop samples. Kicking things off is 'Grits' which is a hard hitting bit of b-boy funk and breaks with old school soul vocals and plenty of horn stabs powering it ever onwards and upwards. '23h' is a little more seductive but no less busy with tightly woven bongos and congas peppering the high speed funk groove. Fantastic stuff that we hope is the start of much more to come from edit king Umbo.

Review: Four Flies present another masterpiece from one of the all-time greats of Italian soundtrack and library music, Piero Umiliani. His work on the 1974 film Il Corpo ranks amongst his most famous work, and now two pieces have been selected from the soundtrack and presented on this exclusive single. 'Chaser' on the A side appears in an exclusive extended form which has never been released before, while 'Hard Times' on the flip remains the archetype of Italian jazz-funk perfection. This is a limited edition so don't hang around as these are sure to fly out.

Fried Bananas (Re edit) (4:05)
Review: Piero Umiliani was everything from a library musician to a beloved soundtrack artist, and his name is synonymous with Italian musical heritage, emanating far and wide from the latter 20th century. Coming to light as part of this new reissue from Maledetta Discoteca, 'Fried Bananas' is a danceable rarity that appeared as part of a never-released 1975 LP. Full of whirly rhythm-guitar and full of instrumental lounge-funk tropes, it's another to cement his name.

Saudade (1:26)
Macumba (2:20)
Review: One of several products of the relationship between Piero Umiliani and film director Luigi Scattini, Angeli Bianchi... Angeli Neli - also known as Witchcraft 70 - exemplifies what was so good about the partnership between filmmaker and film scorer. A mondo movie, which were a specific sub genre of exploitation flicks and documentaries, often made to look like works of non-fiction, while this isn't Cannibal Holocaust, one of the most notorious in the canon, it certainly paints a questionable picture of Brazil's rural communities. Supposedly heading out into small town South America to observe witchcraft, black magic and ritual practices, the soundtrack itself does its best to try and evoke the spirits presented on screen, even when heard separate to the visual narrative. Here in abridged form (the full soundtrack is also available), the two tracks are influenced by Bossa nova and samba, but with so much wilder happening.'Saudade' opens on spectacular vocal-led stuff, before 'Macumba' places voice as secondary to complex and hypnotic drum patterns.

Review: New London reissue label Zel Zele launches with a reissue of a 'holy grail' by Umit Aksu Orkestrasi - a band formed by Turkish pianist, composer and arranger Umit Aksu. Originally released in 1975, Bermuda Seytan Ucgeni is an outstanding experimentation of forward-thinking jazz-funk, played by some of Turkey's most talented musicians. On the A side," Bermuda Seytan Ucgeni" is the sound of the '70's at its finest featuring a roaring horn section. Experience the uplifting vibes of "Bogazici Koprusu" on the flip, which is reminiscent of old Italian library recordings, as described by the label.

The Umoza Music Project - "Down By The Beach" (3:05)
Woodfield Rd Allstars - "Ghetto Guitar" (4:25)
Review: The crucial Original Gravity label is busy this month with three red hot new 7"s all dropping in quick succession. The top-notch funk crew has this spilt 7" from Umoza Music Project and The Woodfield Road Allstars up here on limited wax. The a-side is a sunny bit of original rousing 70s reggae direct from the islands. Backing vocalists provide plenty of butter while the lead laments a love lost and the rhythm rolls on. On the back side is a much more stoner-paced and funk drenched laidback instrumental with Balearic guitar licks that look to the stars as organ chords warm you through and the rocksteady rhythm gently sways to and fro. Two gems for sure.

Review: Cultural icon Don Letts joins forces here with the masterful musician Greg Foat and producer James Thorpe to make a new entry into the Relatin project series. It is one where artists engaged with Latin musical roots from another era and update them for the here and now. Here they bring plenty of heavy dub vibes and great special awareness to a tune by Venezuelans Un Dos Tres. Greg Foat & James Thorpe also step up with a remix that is just as heavy and summery.

Three (dub) (3:24)
Review: Undefined is a duo made up of Sahara on keys, bass and programming, and Ohkuma on drums, and word has it that they have roots in Japanese dub. They've already collaborated with dBridge, amongst others, and this new single locks you deep into their world with rim shots and drum fills ringing out into cavernous dub drums. The addition of Rider Shafique's tender, introspective vocals make it a truly standout track. Move quick on this as it's limited to 600 copies worldwide, with no digital, no repress, and a slick screen printed sleeve.

Review: A hot and steamy funk jam on the A, a swooning samba with a hectic climax on the B: dynamically this is pretty much the perfect 45 as it ticks all funk dancefloor scenarios. Sonically it's just as sweet with widescreen production, fireside harmonies and pianos that could meander on for days and you'd never get bored. Previously rarer than unicorn knickers, this Underground Resurrection re-release comes our way the same week as the Second Resurrection 45. AOTN are clearly working on biblical form right now.

The Unemployed - "Funky Thing" (part 1 - Professor Shorthair remix) (4:24)
Lee Dorsey - "Occapella" (Professor Shorthair remix) (3:26)
Review: Somewhat predictably, this double-dose of party-hearty Professor Shorthair remixes is as colourful and vibrant as the purple marbled vinyl seven-inch onto which the tracks are pressed. On side A he does his thing with The Unemployed's rugged 1970 funk-rock jam "Funky Thing", beefing up the beats for modern dancefloors while adding a choice selection of scratched-in samples. Arguably even better is his rework of Lee Dorsey's "Occapella", a sweet, lo-slung groover that gets re-cast as a dubbed-out chunk of hazy, bass-heavy hip-hop soul rich in echo-laden vocal snippets, snatches of rap and hazy horns. As Dorsey's vocal says, it's "finger-snapping good"!

Die Hard (4:03)
War Rap (5:01)
Review: Japan's Diggers With Gratitude have been working hard to licence the music of OG American rapper Unique aka Denarius Hemphill. This month they have got three of his best known, hardest to find and more desirable tunes coming out on limited edition 7"s. This time it's "Die Hard" that gets the reissue treatment after prices have climbed sky high since it initially landed in 2008. Mad scratching, crisp and hard hitting beats and uptempo, well-articulated rapping makes this a real timeless beauty. "War Rap" on the flip hits harder with darker stabs and prickly delivery next to alarm-like pads.

Review: Denarius Hemphill aka Unique put out just a couple of perfectly formed streetwise rap cuts in 1989, then another in 2008. That landed on Diggers With Gratitude who are rightfully revisiting his catalogue to make available again the tunes that have become really quite pricey. This is one of three such releases this month and focuses on "Pure Dynamite", a laid back, deep cut joint with positive vibrations and funky guitar riffs stitched into the soulful, leggy beats. "Axe Maniac" on the flip then gets busier and exudes plenty of 80s attitude.

Review: Unique's 1989 jam "I'm Untouchable" was a hard hitting jam that has become a much sought after record in the 30 years since. Selling for upwards of 1500 quid - when you can find it - means it has long been out of reach to many, but thanks to Japan's Diggers With Gratitude you can now snap up one of these limited edition 7" represses. The original has old school production and raw boom bap drums with impassioned raps from Denarius Hemphill, and a rare demo version on the flip with extra scratching, busier percussion and a more muted vocal line is also included.

AC Tilmon & The Detroit Emeralds - "That's All I Got" (2:58)
Review: This reissue seven-inch offers up another double-header of hard to find heat from the expansive vaults of the legendary Kent label. First up on the A-side is Unique Blend's 1973 cut "Gonna Spread The News", a spiraling chunk of sing-along soul goodness full of heady group vocals, cut-glass strings, hazy horns and clipped guitar riffs. Over on side B you'll find A.C. Tilmon & The Detroit Emeralds' 1975 side "That's All I Got", a slightly more up-tempo and punchier affair that prioritizes groove and vocals over any kind of orchestral sweetness.
