Captain Gloats vs The Beastie Boys - "Ring My Cheque Up" (4:34)
Captain Gloats - "Chequestrumental" (4:34)
Review: A genius soundclash with a distinct New York flavour, bringing two generations of world beating sounds from the Big Apple together on the same track. The rapping is just as smart mouthed and amusing as you'd expect, but it's their unlikely pairing with these familiar 70s disco grooves and additional beat enhancing that brings this release to life. It all makes for a heady, ludicrous but also ludicrously natural sounding mashup that you can really imagine causing carnage on many a dancefloor. There's an instrumental mix on the flip, too, for those after something a little less audacious to spin, but the A-side is where the true action is.

Review: Flip The Script Radio is a place those in the know head to hear the to new MCs and hip hop acts before they blow up. To celebrate their six year anniversary, they have joined forces with Good For You Records and legendary MC and lyricist Grand Puba for this red hot new special edition 7". It finds the icon's classic 'I Like It' replayed by a n eight piece band but with some new verses delivered from the rap legend himself. He lays down in fine style and makes this a great new version of a classic that is filled with heart warming soul.

Beaulemaire - "Track 3" (1:55)
Elusive - "Track 4" (2:22)
Shri! - "Track 5" (3:04)
Review: Street Corner's FliP Sessions is a great source of beats for hip-hop heads and this eighth volume is no different. It's limited to just 200 copies and features five more exquisite little sketches that are loveably rough around the edges and full of laidback and dusty soul. After the busted breaks of GREENMINDZ, Toby Glider zones you out with lo-fi loops and Beaulemaire brings heavier beats. Side 2 has a more jazz cut from Elusive and star gazing cosmic melody from Shri!. All five of these are delightful little pieces.

Horror Games (3:43)
Horror Games (instrumental) (3:41)
Review: Teddy Powell and Zee Desmondes are The Jack Moves, a contemporary disco and hip hop outfit who here link with unknown newbies The People Of Newark and Larry Hamm for this tidy new 7" on Star Creature. 'Horror Games' has a squelchy synth bass line that carries the loose drum work and bustling methane of background vocals and found sounds. A lead singer takes charge up top as various chatting crowds play out in the background. It's a busy tune that also comes as an instrumental for those who prefer the focus to be on the well crafted drums and bass.

Bus Dat Ass (4:17)
Got It Bad Y'all (4:10)
Review: Boom Bap Classics does exactly what it says on the tin once more here. For the eighth time, it has chosen some real heat to offer up on 7" as King Tee and The Alkaholiks feature with two of their golden era boom-bap gems. 'Bus Dat Ass' has a mix of raw and dusty drum breaks and big, bouncy bars that bring a party feel. On the flip things get more slow and dirty, the bars are less playful and more serious and the production features squelchy bass and hypnotic Middle Eastern melodies. Two gems, to be sure.

Review: The Galaxy Sound Co US is now up to number 41 in their buy-on-sight 'Series: 1$ Bin Breaks'. It's another vital 45 rpm that packs a lot in with plenty of epic sound sources that you will recognise and love from some of your favourite hip-hop joints. Artists like Pete Rock & C.L. Can't Explain (R&B mix By Omar S) (2:39)
Can't Explain (House remix By Omar S) (3:35)
Review: Omar S sets his considerable dancefloor skills to something a little different on a new 7" featuring the vocal talents of TroiAlexis. A young talented Detroit female songwriter who was discovered by Omar S at the Conant Gardens Party Store when she sung acapella to him at a Hi Tech party, TroiAlexis lends an air of soulful class to Omar's trademark electro-slanted electronics on both sides of this single. There's a stripped down - and we mean stripped right down - bass heavy R&B mix on the A-side, while the flip has a sturdier house mix that still gives her voice room to soar.

The Blassics - "I Wanna Show A Lil Trick" (3:36)
Review: The production pair of Tuure Tammi and Juha Sarkkola hail from Hameenlinna, Finland and first came together to record as The Blassics in 2010. Initially it was an instrumental funk project that looked to record collecting, sampling and deejaying for inspiration and then ended up as a six-piece live band in 2013. Here they appear on the flip of this 7" from Odd Funk with 'I Wanna Show A Lil Trick', and they are also involved in the making of A-side cut 'Fankkisafka', which has Rosteri, a Finnish rap group from Kuopio, serving up the bars.

Toshiyuki Sasaki - "Toshi's Bonus Breaks" (1:22)
Review: German label Oonops Drops is ever more essential if you ask us and tidy 7"s like this prove why (as does their mission to focus is on "sustainability, climate protection and socio-cultural values".) 'Bird's Lament' is a top tier tune from Slick Walk x Sneaky with live drum breaks and serene strings making for a reflective late night vibe. On the flip of this limited edition and clear slice of wax is Avantgarde Vak with the sweet hip hop sounds of 'Keep Ya Eyes Up' then Toshiyuki Sasaki with his sublime 'Toshi's Bonus Breaks.'

Toshiyuki Sasaki - "Toshi Bonus Breaks" (1:24)
Review: To mark the 150th episode of Oonops's Brooklyn Radio Show he invited some artists to record some tracks for his for Oonops Drops label. Slick Walk (Merse & DJ Robert Smith) and Fingathing's Sneaky steppe dup first with 'Bird's Lament', a nice cut up beat with twanging double bass and dark cello vibes. South Korean producer Avantgarde Vak says 'Keep Ya Eyes Up' and does so with a sparse beat and moody bass. Last of all is the tight drum funk of Toshiyuki Sasaki's 'Toshi Bonus Breaks.'

Funky/Club House
Track 1 (7:48)
Track 2 (6:09)
Review: Let the speculation begin, because here we have a new EP from an artist about which we know nothing on a similarly anonymous new label. T Recs has pressed up these two house cuts on alluring green wax and riddled them with big samples. The first will be familiar to fans of Donald Glover's 'This Is America' which has the vocal samples and crowd chants layered into a chunky tribal house cut. On the flip is a similar tune with tweaked vocals. Both will bring big reactions to the club.

Cost Of Living (2:58)
Don't Cry Now (4:36)
Sugar (4:29)
Zallom (3:10)
Review: After offering up EPs titled "Hard Times" and "Changing Times" in 2017, Kaidi Tatham returns to First Word to complete the trilogy with "Serious Times". Of course, the music contained within the EP's tightly packed grooves is as joyous, rich as intricate as ever. Check, for example, "Don't Cry Now", a samba-soaked, sun-kissed affair that wraps harmonic freestyle vocals, twinkling electric piano lines and darting jazz-funk bass around a seriously shuffling groove. Tatham's much-discussed jazz-funk influences are once again given an airing on "Sugar", while his fine piano work takes pride of place on instrumental hip-hop head-nodder "Zallom". Best of all, though, is opener "Cost of Living", which emphatically weaves together all of these strands and more besides.

Struttin' With Muro (6:11)
Struttin' With Muro (instrumental) (6:11)
Review: Back in 2004, Japanese r&b artist Tina headed into the studio with self-styled 'king of digging' Muro - a prolific DJ, producer, record collector and re-editor - to record some tracks for her fifth solo album. The most acclaimed of the lot was 'Struttin With Muro', a dope, funk-fuelled jam that made use of some choice Roy Ayers samples. At the time, Muro also prepared alternate takes - utilising different elements of the sampled Ayers track - which then appeared on a now impossible to find promo 12-inch. This 45 offers up those two takes - vocal and instrumental - and both sound like guaranteed party-starting jams, the kind of hybrid r&b/funky hip-hop workouts that never fail to get things going out on the dancefloor.

By then, the duo had already appeared on classic joints by Notorious BIG such as 'One More Chance' and 'Juicy,' so he returned the favour with an intro rap verse to this one. Sunday Afternoon was their sophomore album and it came in 2021 following 2017's debut. This tidy 7" package features new Live On KEXP remix of the title track and it has sensuous saxes played in expressive fashion next to rousing horns and over the nice and lazy but dynamic funk drum work. Review: The Record Store Day drops are coming in thick and fast now and for hip-hop fans this is a heavy one. Neither of these tunes have ever been on a 45 rpm together before. They are classics from the legendary Philly crew with hard breaks and headier bars on 'My Part Of Town' set over a jostling bassline and tough hits. It marks a fusion of talents between Polish and Japanese artists and commenced with Twardowski crafting music using samples from Japanese albums followed by the inclusion of MCs KANETSUGU and Prykson Fisk. Review: A decade after making his major label with Doris, all all-star affair featuring contributions from the RZA, Frank Ocean and Tyler The Creator, Los Angeles MC Earl Sweatshirt delivers album number six - a two-way hoedown with acclaimed beat-maker, Cypress Hill affiliate and fellow LA resident The Alchemist. It's a musical marriage with great potential, all told, as Earl Sweatshirt delivers distinctively enigmatic lyrical flows in his distinctive timbre over impeccable beats that draw on an impressively diverse range of samples. Compare and contrast, for example, the sparse, bluesy brilliance of 'Vin Skully' and the West Coast synth-funk influenced smoothness of 'Heat Check', or gospel-influenced Vince Staples hook-up 'Mancula' and the slow-motion drowsiness and aural beauty of 'Sirius Blac'.

It is fair to say that much of it is of an old school bent - boom bap drums and silky soul flurries, but that doesn't make it any less essential. Coming back for a third album here is legendary beat maker and MC Large Pro aka The Large Professor. It came first in 2008 and now gets a special 15th anniversary that brings i to vinyl for the first time ever. The beats are rugged and raw- not as raw as the original ODB, it must be said - but it doe a fine job of showcasing Tame One's unparalleled ability on the mic. The beats stay low, with menace at times and soul at others. It's a coherent album that has been cleaned up mix-wise for this occasion.

His new 12 track album takes us on a lush and louche trip through all his myriad musical skills and styles. Boogie, gospel-tinged hip-hop, jazz-funk and more all colour the futurist grooves with contributions from The Easy Access Orchestra, and pianist Robert Mitchell. The album - which isn't a first collaboration for this duo - is packed with plenty of samples from the worlds of soul and funk and so bare the by now signature sounds of both. Complex and street-level lyricism elevates these tunes beyond the sum of their parts with plenty of spiritual moments like 'Foto Synth' next to tracks imbued with a certain optimism such as 'Points Of Light.'

Review: The P-VINE is putting a bit of focus on the work of Think Twice right now. It is an alias of a hip hop beat maker from Montreal in Canada who also goes by the name of Specfics and is known for his work with Hyde Out and Nujabes. His take on the genre is dusty and jazz inflected and as well as his sophomore long player Rock To This Beat from 2008 being reissue don vinyl, so too is his debut, 2007's With A Loop And Some Swing. It showcases his deft, light touch perfectly with the sort of laidback and romantic grovers that sooth the soul, while plenty of great guest verses add layers of extra charm.

Review: P-VINE has got several brilliant records dropping right about now and one of them is this vinyl reissue of Think Twice's Rock To This Beat album from 2008. It was a second solo album for the Montreal, Canada producer known as Specifics and someone revered for his work with Hyde Out and Nujabes. His jazzy and dusty take on hip hop comes with plenty of rich new-soul hooks and his debut in 2007, With A Loop And Some Swing, remains a much-loved record. Thus one brings even more soul and positive vibrations to his usual lounge and laid back beats.

Review: The fifth studio album by American hip-hop group Three 6 Mafia first dropped in 2021 and now, a year late, it gets a special 20th anniversary reissue. The album was a soundtrack to the direct-to-video (videos, remember them?) movie, Choices, and mixes up crunk, gangsta rap, hardcore and hip hop in the group's usual hard hitting style. The Memphis, Tennessee, outfit first formed in 1991 but were still going strong a decade later and enjoyed plenty of mainstream success despite their decidedly underground sound.

Review: Ten years after she made her debut on Greco-Roman, singer-songwriter Tirzah drops her third studio album, a collection of imaginative and sugar-free love songs crafted with the help of frequent collaborator Mica Levi. Trip9Love, which was recorded over the course of a year at their homes and "various studios around South-East London and Kent", is relatively minimalistic in terms of the musical elements employed - think looped piano motifs, beats that sit somewhere between lo-fi hip-hop and hyper-pop, and Tirzah's now familiar voice - but still sounds surprisingly "big". It's a great example of a simple idea, executed brilliantly, with standout cuts including the infectious 'You All The Time', the ambient pop style 'Their Love', the gritty and crunchy 'Stars', and the flash-fried '2 D I C U V', where Polly Jean Harvey-esque guitars catch the ear.

Review: Shorty The Pimp was the seventh album from Too $hort and it dropped back in 1992. It has been regarded as something of a smooth hip-hop classic ever since and now gets reissued on limited edition orange-coloured vinyl for the first time since 2018. Its title is taken from a 1973 Blaxploitation film and the record finds Shorty in full flow with his boastful bars of funky beats with conscious rhymes and layers of swagger pimp talk all intertwined nicely. There is wit and comedy in the lyrics - as well as some things that show the album's age - but it remains a superb listen on the slower, funky end of the hip-hop spectrum.

Review: Legendary Queensbridge MC Tragedy Khadafi and acclaimed producer Endemic Emerald met a decade ago at Goblin Studios in Queens. They soon found they had shared musical chemistry and have worked on several great songs together. Now they drop Rebel Kings, a new album that again lives up to the hype. Tragedy is in fine flow through as he touches on a wide range of subjects in evocative fashion over the timeless production of Endemic. Nods to the game, childhood memories and much more all comes up on these well-crafted songs with plenty of boom-bap stylings and guest appearances from DJ Eclipse, DJ Akil, Kasim Allah and Foul Monday.

Review: Tucka Da Hunta Man - Concrete Jungle 1995 remains a much loved hip hop long player by those who know. But did you know a load of material recorded in the same seasons has mostly lay about unreleased? Well now it gets its day in the sun as Smoke On Records present all exclusive unreleased material on this limited new album. The beats hit hard, with crunchy snares and rhymes that are just as tough. Though old school by definition, these beats still sound fresh today, and the lyrical wordplay still resonates.
