Review: The French deep house label D3 Elements is now a decade old and to mark the occasion it has assembled a superb three part EP series featuring plenty of talents both new and old. The second EP kick off with some Japanese stylings from Koizumi Yukiko and his piano laced bongo workout '526'. Taelue sets off on a deep and heavy bassline pulse that will make floors march and Nemanja Krstic's 'Aquae Sulis' brings some jazzy chord work and bubbling funk bass for a nice heartfelt vibe. Gnork shuts down with a skittish, stripped back broken beat that makes this another diverse offering.

It comes from Weiss, a producer who knows how to get a floor in a sweat, and is a loopy, party-starting jam that will be perfect for those festive dances that always have an extra air of celebration. The Jones Girls provide the soulful vocal which is looped over a leggy disco-house beat and low-slung bass. A breakdown brings the filters and teases the return before the drop arrives and the roof gets blown off. Simple but effective.

Review: Since the 1970s Danny Krivit has been a prolific re-editor. We're used to him cutting up classic cuts - think disco and soul, in particular - but he's never been afraid to turn his talents to contemporary cuts. That's what you get on this surprise Defected release. On the A-side he turns his attention to "Heaven", the killer gospel-inspired modern disco single from The Vision and Andreya Triana, turning in a version with plenty of drops, instrument solos and more emphasis on the righteous, life-affirming vocals. He's in a smoother mode on side B, extended and rearranging the rich and soulful dancefloor treat that is Kai Alce's Original NDATL vocal mix of The Dangerfeel Newbies' "What Am I Here For?" - a gem from 2016 that has previously been criminally overlooked.

Review: Small Hours from the Berlin-based Brit Youandewan is a young and already cult label that does things well, if not fast. Yet here we get a second EP in quick succession with the sixth outing again offering up four vital names from the house and tech underground. Velvet Velour opens up with squelchy, funky bass on 'Show You The Door' before Liquid Earth melts the mind with impossibly bendy synths and stiff drums on 'Gummo Hardrive.' Flip this 12" over and you'll find some cosmic tech in the form of The Honda Boys's 'Funghi Pie' and gurgling, gritty, metallic deep space house from Dreaming Mind who offers up 'Mid-Bozz.' Review: It's a case of old school meets new school on this fresh new slice of house from Defected. Representing the vets is the one and only Louie Vega, while in the contemporary corner are New York's finest, the Martinez Brothers. Marc E Bassy also pops up on vocals for this feel good deep house gem. His part sung, part rapped delivery comes over soul drenched beats and nice singing leads, which have long been a hallmark of the great Masters at Work man, Vega. Review: While quite a few of Type-303's releases have been heavily dependent on twisted acid lines and jacking drums, his latest missive looks to colourful Italian dream house and nostalgic 1990s deep house for inspiration. The results are predictably impressive, from the lilting synth-trumpet melodies, carnivalesque percussion, sturdy house beats and hands-aloft piano riffs of 'Is It Magic' (a kind of 21st century update of the classic Don Carlos sound), to the eyes-closed, sun-up gorgeousness of Mediterranean house classic-in-the-making 'Summer Nights'. Review: Jasper Tygner is making moves, and fast, and is now one of the most interesting new names to have emerged in the underground. His Off Season EP is a case in point and is a multi-faceted work. 'Ready' is a standout and features Art School Girlfriend with its lush ambient synth craft and glitchy keys suspending you in a vibe while the vocals activate your heart. Later on this master of deep and downtempo sound worlds hooks up for a second time in 2023 with DJ Boring for the excellent 'So Unknown' which is another irresistible gem.

Review: Twoslice draws heavily on New York garage house and speed garage on what is ostensibly a 'tech house' EP - 'Miss Manhattan'. The French producer drops it here as his debut for his local pushers House Puff, which is a fitting name, as they must be puffing out their chests at this one. Ultimate slappage is achieved through 'Slice's careful, precision command over snappy transients and rapid-fire syncope, with the track 'Nano' in particular doubling down on the fact that Twoslice is skilled, and knows it.

Review: Mark Night's label is one of the UK's biggest when it comes to main room house sounds. This sampler shows exactly what it is all about as we head into the madness of the Miami Music Week and then Ibiza soon after. Twolate opens up with 'Baila' which has tribal drums and percusison that stomp with real heaviness under wild vocals. CASSIMM & Gene Farris combine then for the maximal monster that is 'Party People' with all its sweeping synth filters and James Haskell's' 'Check It Out' is a funky groove that ducks and dives under stuff chords. Last of all is Danny Rhys with the hooky andoopy joys of 'Sibali.'

For the very first edition of the series, a mockley crew of newcomers come to the fore, be they DJ Moar, Disco Flegrei or Holdtight. Centring on woozy jazzdance and disco with an airily produced bent, the highlights on this one have to be Flegrei's 'Titamesque', which basks in a kind of sexy sophistry procured by the heady combination of live drums and a (we think) muted bass clarinet, and Yured Jones' 'Far Away', which breaks from the genre prescription for a more cinematic breakdown.

Review: A reissue of a 1988 house classic by DJ and producer Hipolito Torrales and company; 'You're Gonna Miss Me' is an incipient deep house classic, often described as one of its pangaeic moments, being an effective early production masterclass as well as a precursive blueprint for garage house. This fresh 12" version ' is a weightily produced stonker, with Cinthie's version channelling an extra low-middy grit, and Terry Farley and Wade Teo's version elbowing their way to string-laden euphoria with equal voracity. Ibiza based talent Tucillo and Fat East magician Took Tamura both have already long since proven their credentials and here they draw on their vast reserves of creativity for a varied EP that opens with the pulsing minimal house of 'Golden Ring' before 'Salvadanaio' gets deeper and more dubby, with mysterious chords slowly hypnotising you. Review: Giuseppe Tuccillo is back at it with more of his lithe grooves, offering up some of the sprightliest gear you're likely to hear from the box-jam end of the minimal house spectrum. This time he's stepping out on Melodeum, sounding as on point as ever from the brooding b-line antics of 'Limbo' to the playful organ flex and clipped acid of 'Rainy Day'. There's a light dusting of breaks on 'Too Close' and some more angular funk at work on 'Instant', but crucially the Italian producer binds everything together with a smooth finish which speaks to his deep-running roots in the scene.

Review: After a break of almost two years, Trindadian Deep has decided to re-activate the Native Rebel Music label he founded in 2018. Like its predecessor, "Soca Electric" boasts three tracks of intricately detailed, emotion-rich deep house full of nods towards Caribbean and African musical culture. We highly recommend the luscious and beach-warm title track, where steel pan melodies, fluid synthesizer solos and life-affirming chords stretch out above a percussion-laden, Ron Trent style deep house groove. That said, we've also got a lot of love for the similarly sun-kissed, synth bass-sporting "The Edge" and the more heavily electronic deep house lusciousness of "Future Travels". In fact, all three tracks are glorious.

It kicks off with some old school and jacked-up sounds on 'Not For Radio' where analogue drums, silvery cowbells and ticking hi-hats get you in a sweat. Then it's a more drum-led and low-slung affair on the swinging 'Dub 3'. He has a kick for digging deep into his archives to turn out old but still godlier tackle and we guess that Underground Grooves Vol 01 is another such project. Review: Finnish house kingpin Trevor Deep Jnr always lives up to his name when crafting beats. He does so on a range of crucial labels and here it is an EP of tunes taken from his latest full-length that we're treated to on HPTY. There is a serenity and beauty to opener 'Culpa' that soon casts a spell. 'Come Alive' (feat Niko Marks) then breaks out on prickly broken beats that are brilliant raw as a soulful vocal rings out up top. There is more classy broken beat dub deepness on 'Broken Dreams' which is again defined by a great vocal sample and then Brawther offers one of his textbook stripped-back but bouncy dubs to open the flip side. Two further jams explore misty-eyed house depths in style.

Review: Along with the more jazz-funk-and-disco influenced Boogie Cafe Records in Bristol, the EVM128 and James Rudie-helmed Dance Regular is leading the charge for a new wave of hybrid deep house/broken beat productions. The label's latest missive, which comes courtesy of the simply named Trev, emphasises the imprint's chosen musical direction. Title track 'Nightjar' sets the tone, with ultra-deep riffs, hazy chords and gently jazzy synth fills dancing atop a weighty bassline and relaxed broken beats. 'Late Flip' is even more sub-heavy and Latin-tinged, whilst retaining the jazz-funk flourishes and West London style bruk-up beats, while 'Beijo' is a subtly dancehall-influenced hip-hop jam. Closing cut 'Grey', meanwhile, is an altogether more colourful cut than the title suggests, with sparkling synth sounds, positive-sounding melodies and squelchy bass aplenty.

Review: The 12" version of Ron Trents Raw Footage LP selects four of the best suited cuts from the CD album for the vinyl format. "Blood & Fire" is repetitious in composition with Trent's use of reverberating bells, monotoned synth hits and bit crushed shakers. The rest of the EP moves into deep house, even slightly tropical territory. "Atmosphere" wallows in tribal percussion, porno synths and delay as does "Pressure Zone", almost a dub version of the latter. "Space Dance" is a cerebral deep house pleasure replete with breathy male vocals, drawn out chords and heartfelt undertones.

Review: The arrival of fresh material from Prescription co-founder Ron Trent is always cause for celebration. Happily, this new two track missive from the Chicago deep house legend more than delivers on its promise. A-side "Kinky City" is as melodious and musically rich as you'd expect, with Trent layering evocative vocals, spacey chords, tumbling synth-strings and bubbly electronic motifs on top of a snappy, analogue drum machine groove. He shows off his impeccable piano playing skills on the warm, rich and soulful flipside cut "Omi Tutu", which boasts slightly more organic sounding drum hits and a bassline that evokes memories of "Sueno Latino" and other similarly minded Italian dream house gems.

Review: Chicago house legend Ron Trent still has the magic touch. It's getting close to thirty years since his first releases began trickling out of the second generation of the Windy City's house scene, but the producer and DJ still knows how to lay down the utter truth. "Time & Space" is a classic Trent joint, where the spark is lit thanks to warm glow of dubby beats accompanied by sweet, mesmerising licks of instruments floating in mid-air. "Bass To Love" is as gentle and moving, but the sounds linger towards the higher end of the tune, where driving pads fuse gracefully with cascading synth solos to form a thick and wide-eyed wall of house for the deeper end of the DJ spectrum.

Review: The original deep house master Ron Trent is back with one more soul soothing and utterly cathartic outing before this most turbulent of years draws to a close. This is the third release from his forthcoming Romantic Flight album and is a real house lament. He is in particularly spiritual mode here with 'Black Romantic' being a delicate house dance with sprinklings of percussion, acoustic guitar sounds and streaming synths all sinking you into a reverie while vocals drift up top. Review: It's taken a while, but finally Chiwax has repressed their 2014 reissue of Ron Trent's brilliant 1992 EP 'Love Affair', which on its initial release was officially the Chicagoan's follow-up to his peerless debut, 'Altered States'. All six mixes from the original 12" are present in remastered form. Four of these come from Trent himself: the wonderfully warming, sparkling and starry 'Ron Soulful Mix' (which some would argue provided a blueprint for his later work with Chez Damier), the stripped-back and sub-heavy 'Bass Shaker Mix', the riff-driven joyousness of the 'Underground Mix' and the sleazy, sub-heavy and alien-sounding 'Beatnik Mix'. The remaining mixes are by 'executive producer' Braxton Holmes: the dense, breathless and sweaty '326 Mix' and the classic Chicago deepness of the 'Smooth Mix'.
