Review: TAFKAMP is the alias of the Dutch producer and DJ formerly known as Minister President. A prominent figure in the Rotterdam scene, he's primarily known for his rough hardware jammy cuts, a trend which continues on this very latest EP 'Zonegrens'. Rotterdam Electronix label don DJ Overdose sees to a seleccy of five pieces straight from the cutting room floor, delivering nothing short of gritty toothcuttery. Two downtown city hubbubers helm up the A-side, before we are thrown aside by 'Bad Dream Tuesday, which hears a sudden foray into tundric dream-techno.

You're In Love (Kon remix) (4:27)
You're In Love (Kon dub) (4:27)
Review: Second time around for Kon's fabulous re-rubs of Twilight's slept-on 1986 disco-boogie gem 'You're In Love', which first dropped on seven-inch almost a decade ago. Vinyl copies of the 45 are hard to come by, so this Ubiquity Records re-issue is most welcome. Kon's takes stick closely to the original - these are multi-track tweaks, rather than revolutionary remixes - while subtly beefing up the groove and highlighting the band's weighty synth bassline. On the A-side you'll find the full vocal take - all sweet vocals, crispy disco drums, colourful synths and clipped, Chic style guitar licks - while the flip-side 'Dub' is a marginally more minimalist, groove-focused affair, with delay-laden vocal snippets and swirling instrumental textures echoing across the sound space.

You're Gonna Miss Me (Cinthie remix)

You're Gonna Miss Me (Terry Farley & Wade Teo dub)
You're Gonna Miss Me (original club mix)
Review: A reissue of a 1988 house classic by DJ and producer Hipolito Torrales and company; 'You're Gonna Miss Me' is an incipient deep house classic, often described as one of its pangaeic moments, being an effective early production masterclass as well as a precursive blueprint for garage house. This fresh 12" version ' is a weightily produced stonker, with Cinthie's version channelling an extra low-middy grit, and Terry Farley and Wade Teo's version elbowing their way to string-laden euphoria with equal voracity. The original appears too, in all its raw, reissued charm.

Review: Two Larry Banks produced soul gems from the 60s... Kenny Carter's "You'd Better Get Hip Girl" is straight out of the Motown playbook; raw emotions, rich harmonies and superb orchestration it's a ballad of the highest order. "My Life Is No Better" carries the same lamented sentiment but delivers it in a much more uptempo fashion a la Delfonics. Powerful.

Review: Hot Creations is one of the driving forces of contemporary and accessible club music - a workhorse that keeps on serving up fresh sounds to power global dancefloors. This new one from Gabriele Toma is another hard-to-ignore EP that kicks off with a perfect blend of tech, house and funk - the drums are tight, the bassline has plenty of grit and the rapped vocals are sure to cut through. 'Move Your Body' is another full-throttle and turbo-charged tech pumper, 'Muevete' brings some sunny Latin percussive flair and 'Magic Flute' brings some dark and late-night edge to a varied EP.

You Got What It Takes (The Reflex Revision) (10:02)
You Got What It Takes (12" mix) (9:32)
You Got What It Takes (instrumental) (7:43)
Review: Bobby Thurston's 'You Got What It Takes' is a soaring, spiralling disco classic whose , squelchy synth-bass and highly addictive horn refrains are not only instantly familiar, but also never fail to raise the temperature out on the dancefloor. This coloured vinyl reissue, released as part of Unidisc's ongoing 40th anniversary series, offers up both the original 12" mixes (vocal and instrumental), as well as a fresh, stretched-out rework from re-edit master the Reflex that's worth the admission price on its own. He naturally makes the most of the original's key elements, building up the groove before unleashing Thurston's vocals, the celebratory horn riffs and - most pleasingly - the track's spacey, life-affirming synth solo.

The Gaff - "High Life" (45 edit) (3:42)
Review: Mountain Records are a new funk label, pushing 45's cut with new funk tinged with a modern production sheen. Two label mainstays decorate each side of this one: for the A, Double A asks 'You Feel Alright?' We certainly do, not least thanks to the artist's heavy locking down of sampled big boom drums, funky grooves and evil laughter. The Gaff meanwhile offers up a breakbeat banger to the altar, letting up on bass for a weird, flauting finish. 7"s collectors, watch out.

Review: The West End label out of New York City is one of the most legendary when it comes to disco of the 70s and 80s. It was home to all the finest producers of the day from Raw Silk to Barbara Mason to Peech Boys, who appeared on this one with Brenda Taylor in 1982. First up is a Michael Gray & Dr Packer remix of 'You Can't Have Your Cake & Eat It Too' that is all stiff synth stabs and chunky disco funk, then the same pair remix the tiles 'Don't Make Me Wait' into something a little more groove driven and funky than the darker original.

I've Gotta Keep On Lovin' You (4:10)
Review: Athens of The North delivers once again here with another delightful reissue of a soul classic by Bernetia Miller And The Soul Groovers. An original of this Georgian gem is insanely rare and in fact the Athens boss himself has never actually seen a copy. It was recorded in the studio of Phil Walden's studio in Macon, Georgia and Bernetia herself has said it took many takes and plenty of hard work to get the result they wanted. Backing band The Soul Groovers had their own bus on which they toured plenty and this reissue is from the master tapes owned by Bernetia. 'You Can Tell Me Goodbye' has lo-fi drums and raw horns with a yearning vocal while 'I've Gotta Keep On Lovin' You' is more slow and steady and emotionally moving with a more tender vocal.

His 'You're In My System' came initially back in 1982 then got some remixes from Dance Quin in Ibadan in 2019 and now the original extended club mix and one of those Quin dubs get pressed up to a vital white vinyl 12" on Kaoz Theory. Review: William, Bertram and Randy Brown are legendary Memphis soul singers who released an album Facing The Music back in 2009 as TEN-63. It had been recorded many years before and featured 'You And Me' which was already a cult fav. It now gets pressed up to this delightful 7" backed with 'Say We'll Stay'. Both are gorgeously arranged songs with sexual sax motifs and plenty of longing in the buttery baritone vocal. The harmonies too are sublime and it's not hard to see why this brotherly threesome had such a big impact on their local Memphis scene with magic like this.

THE REFLEKTOR - "Arawak Track" (6:05)
Review: The latest entry in the Yellow Jackets series takes us back to a couple of gems dug out by dedicated heads with discerning taste. Kemetic Just are always worthy of more shine, not least when it comes to their 2004 album The Peace Between Us. It was a bold take on future jazz and deep house with a raw edge, and 'Romance With You' was a standout track which now gets a full side of vinyl to bump out on. We're not sure on the provenance of 'Arawak' on the B-side, but it's unmistakably the handiwork of Gifted + Blessed under his The Reflektor moniker, which means you get treated to a singular kind of electro full of feeling and flair.

Review: This second Yellow Jackets double A sider feautures Chicago's royalty Ron Trent and the extra talented multi instrumentalist Other Lands. Again one track per side and full powerful cutting to maximize the sound impact in pure YJ philosophy. Ron Trent 'The Medi' was actully constructed while riding trains and in hotel rooms through Italy, used as a secret weapon in special occasions...and we can hear why: a mind expanding suite that keeps evolving and going in places and spaces while constantly beating you hard! Review: Some of Europe's finest purveyors of underground sounds come together on this fourth rase from the One Eye Witness label out of the Netherlands. Asphalt DJ kicks off and lays out a steamroller of a techno banger in 'Blades' which is pulsing, hard hitting but supple. RDS gets for a much more minimal and cosmic vibe on the tight and bouncy 'TH Only' then Ste Roberts brings some machismo and texture to 'Tune Pitch Decay' with its industrial tech aesthetic. Review: Torsten Profrock’s T++ project has continually spread its wings since conception in 2005. Championed by fans of techno, dubstep, experimental and drum & bass alike, his latest EP for Honest Jons (and rumoured to be his last under this monkier) showcases the amalgamation of styles and sounds that has earnt the German such a far reaching fanbase.

If it does prove to be the final T++ release ever, then the alias will have left us with the most expressive and energetic of his works. Adding a real sense of personality, Profrock unearthed a handful of samples of the singer and ndingidi player Ssekinomu, recorded in East Africa in the 1930s and 40s in the label’s vaults for this release. Skilfully, the producer works these snippets into the complex rhythm structures, giving his music a human touch that has never been seen before. Profrock looks to the radical fringe of UK garage for the snapping 2 step vibe in these rhythms that remain central to all four tracks on the EP. This results in a clutch of tracks that take on an immensely tribal and subconsciously innate feel. They morph new structures from the forms of 2 step, techno and drum & bass around which Profrock wraps twisted FX and weighty sub bass to create one whole, throbbing organism.
So with quite possibly his final release, T++ leaves us, rather fittingly, with a record that sounds at once both ancient and modern. It has a totally unique tone, like a form of tribal language that can only speak to and be understood by today’s culture through these sub-heavy, atmospheric sounds.

Review: The story of this one revolves around San Diego native Anthony "Antone" Williams. He was one day alone in a studio, messing about with the gear and before he knew he it lay down the haunting rhythm that underpins the tune now presented here by the good folks at Athens of the North. It's a sinister, restless one that got released as a hugely limited 7" on Unity Records with otherworldly soul production and a pained vocal up top. Post punk soul, some call it, and that's a fitting descriptor. A remix appears on the flip but the allure of the original is hard to beat.

Why Can't We Live Together (LNTG No More Work rework - Late Night Tuff Guy edit) (7:01)
Review: Last year, legendary disco label T.K released a pair of 12" singles featuring fresh Todd Terje reworks of classic material from K.C & The Sunshine Band. It was such a success that they've decided to repeat the exercise, recruiting Aussie rework specialist Late Night Tough Guy to breathe new life into Timmy Thomas' impassioned anti-war record and the recent subject of sped-up sampling by Drake, "Why Can't We Live Together". Typically, his version is built around a lolloping, disco-friendly house groove, onto which the original record's killer organs and vocals sit. It's tastefully done and hugely playable, of course, though some disco DJs will still prefer to reach for Thomas' impeccable original. Handily, T.K has included that heartfelt slice of soul brilliance on the A-side.

There's a familiar vocal (what a falsetto!) and bass hook on part one that was probably sampled a lot over the years, while the second part on the flip is more funked-up and groovy - perfect for DJ use. Review: Dealing with grief can be very tough. Many find that having a creative outlet proves useful. That's certainly the case for Seven Hills Records' regular Thee J Johanz, who wrote this EP while coming to terms with the death of his mother. Interestingly, it's not a particularly melancholic affair - it's too dancefloor-focused for that - but there's certainly a lot of emotion to be found amongst the chords, melodies and motifs. The standout, for us at least, is opener 'Where Goes Your Soul', where sharp, rising and falling electronic motifs ride a surging acid bassline and bustling machine drums. 'Two C Bee' sees him wrap wild, high-pitch acid sounds and bubbly, sequenced synth sounds around a chunky house beat, while 'Analex' is a formidably psychedelic slab of beat-free ambient exploration.

His Motown legacy continues to serve up surprises as this one was discovered only in 2018 despite being recorded back in 1968. Here it makes a glorious vinyl debut backed with another big tune that somehow has never been released before on wax, and that is The Temptations' 'All I Need Is You Love To Me' which was also penned first in 1968. Six tracks from the label's friends and favourites, each new to the roster, offer bold, untempered explorations of tempo and weight, a concise yet expansive collection recalling the deliberate cadence of rippling sand and the sheen of shimmering oases. From Command D's subtly groundswelling, but snappy 'Half Blue (Violet Mix)', to Foreign Material's alarmingly alien 'The Living Planet' and Third Space's supremely stereoized, lowercase opus 'Push (Part 2)', this is a release for that large intersection of audiophiles and techno-philes.

Review: Digging and finding rare soul, funk and disco 7" is like a right to passage for many obsessed with finding black gold in record shops. Sometimes, it's just too hard to find good copies let alone one at all. Kent Records does us all a big favor and gathers up two hard to come by soul tracks for one special 45. Towana & The Total Destruction's - 'Wear Your Natural, Baby' & Ty Karim's 'If I Can't Stop You (I Can Slow You Down)'. Both of these were originally released on Romark, which was a small Los Angeles label releasing funk and soul, and are destined to delight the hardcore afficianado and casual visitor to soul music alike.

Jacques Bon - "Sky Waves" (5:30)
Review: Landing on a hand-stamped, blue marble and limited edition 12" are four more deep and dubbed out house tunes from the latest instalment of Mireia's We'll Sea series. Das Komplex kicks off with a serious aqueous rhythm drenched in waves of synth with a pained vocal sample that really makes it stick in your mind. Tecwaa knocks it back even further to a slow motion underwater dub current that gently moves you to a state of bliss. 'Nebula' from Achim Maerz is more upright and upbeat, with bright chords shining through the vast groove caverns as neat chords dance up top. 'Sky Waves' closes out in warm, rough edged lo-fi deep house fashion.

Review: Long-serving, jazz-loving deep house duo Kemetic Just have been working with Terrence Downs for years, with the singer's soulful vocals appearing on many of their tracks over the last two decades. There's no original mix of 'We R Culture' here, but rather a quartet of club-ready remixes. DJ Spinna leads the way with vocal and instrumental variations of his 'Galactic Soul Mix' - a gorgeously colourful, pin-sharp shuffle through synth-powered deep house loveliness with all of the intricate musical touches and kaleidoscopic keyboard solos you'd expect from the NYC producer. Elsewhere, Wipe The Needle re-frames the track as a breezy, musically rich slab of jazz-funk-tinged broken beat of the sort regularly served up by Dego and Kaidi Tatham, while the Househeads mix is a carnival-ready, samba-house treat.

Review: Tilman returns to Off Track with a four-tracker for ostensible dancefloor pleasure, but our ears can confirm it goes further to sate the home-listeners' predilections too. Continuing the verve of his old skool 90s garage-intoned releases on his very own Pleasant Systems label, Tilman's newest spans dreamatics, whorling deep stabs and saturated toppers; with just the right ratio of sizzle, body and booty to make for a full collective somatic ecstasy.

Review: Byron Stingil will always be one of the true and authentic original voices of house music. Still, a new tune from the man is always going to get us excited and so it is here. "We Belong Together' is another epic deliver from the man, who empties his lungs, serves up irresistible soul and does it over a house beat embellished with heartwarming horn and piano stabs. There are three different versions that vary slightly for different settings, but also a standout remix from Maurice Fulton. The Sheffield based US house don keeps it smooth, with colourful marimbas, a garage-flecked groove and steamy vocals.

Review: Takecha is the alias for Japanese house producer Takeshi Fukushima, who established himself as a vital voice in the deeper-than-deep underground through his own GWM Records label. Following some choice drops on Holic Trax Fukushima has brought his undulating sound to Sakskobing for a four-deep excursion through blissful pads, warm and rounded basslines and steady ticking drums executed in the classic fashion. From the immensely satisfying Lately bass and joyful chords of 'If I'm There' to the smoky Sunday mood of 'Shinuya Walking' this is an EP to melt into, but there's a strong backbone to make sure it does the business on the floor too.

Review: On his contribution to Watergate's mix series, Biesmans has decided to showcase his own tracks, and mostly a dizzying array of previously unheard collaborations with some seriously talented producers. It makes sense then that the German imprint has decided to show off the best of these across two vinyl samplers, of which this is the second. It's a great collection all told, with opener 'Quantum Computing' - a bumping piano-house hook-up with one of his musical heroes, Mathew Jonson - and the effortlessly funky nu-disco workout 'Me Gusta Acid', co-produced by Kid Simius, standing out. Elsewhere, solo cut 'Hipster Paradise' and Johannes Albert collaboration 'Luft' are also well worth a listen.

Review: Cologne's Hoove label makes a welcome return here with more fresh and contemporary house offerings from a range of interesting names. The always reliable Kolter is up first with 'U Make Me Feel' - a nice and inviting, well swung and mid tempo tech cut with some astral pads. J. Feierabend & Rami's 'OK, Captain!' is just as smooth a cruise through space and Thalo Santana then offers something a little different with a more drum led sound - 'Duradura' has pristine kicks and snares with incidental melodies unfurling up high. D&J's lovely 90s throwback deep house sound 'So We Danced' might be the best of the lot.

Review: Good Vibrations Music boss Sean McCabe has done the world a favour by persuading NYC house legend Victor Simonelli to resurrect his Solution project for the first time in 14 years. Strictly speaking, 'Was It Just a Game' is not brand new - it appeared on the flip of 1993 single 'Was That All It Was' - though the three versions most definitely are. Justin Stride steals the show under his Black Sonix moniker with a bumpin' A-side revision that recalls the glory days of 1990s New Jersey garage - all infectious organ stabs, rich chords, cut-up Tafuri vocal snippets and bustling drums. Elsewhere, McCabe delivers a tidy 21st century dub that features a wonderfully fuzzy bassline, while the Motion Severn remix is a warming drift through tactile deep house territory.

Review: 'Wanna Dance' is the new jam by deep house heavyweight Sean McCabe (Good Vibrations) and Last Forever chief Turbojazz. Said to be conceived during the lockdown period, the track recalls the energy of classic Detroit deep house and even features one of the city's favourite voices in the form of Javonntte. On the flip, the spiritual vibe of Moondance's rework calls to mind the work of Motor City legend Alton Miller, while EVM128 aka Evermean Beats really soaks up the vibe of his new hometown - London - on his nu-jazz broken beat perspective that would make even Kaidi Tatham stand up and notice.

Review: Hardcore followers of deep and jazzy house might well know the name Terry Tester already. He has dropped some fine cuts on labels like Brownswood and BBE and now he cooks up some gritty but glorious new grooves for Creak Inc. His loose-limbed rhythmic style is laid bare on the opener 'Walkin' while 'Wansel' brings some bright and jazzy melodies that light up the ramshackle drums with future soul. Things get nice and trippy on 'Chance' which is wried up with pixelated stabs, acid mumbles and off-grid hits. The best of the lot might be the final cut 'Seven' with its seductive female vocal coos, wispy pads and Detroit drums. Innovative stuff for sure.

Review: Tigerbalm is the solo project from Nicola Rose Robinson, and it has impressed over the last couple of years with music on Peng and Ubiquity. Now she returns to the latter for a new single packed with great remixes. The original is 'Waiheke', a loose-limbed rhythm with bubbling drums, rich percussion and tribal vocals that will work any dance floor into a lather. The Alma Negra remix brings more funky bass, while the Bananas For Breakfast remix slows things down to a languid crawl. On the flip, the Demi Riquisimo mix is more minimal and deep and Quartz and Tiger Sunset then offer two different perspectives to close this vital EP.

Review: Ten years deep, Visionquest continues to be a potent force in field of minimal tech house thanks to releases like these. The latest split release from their VQ X series opens up with the spellbinding, micro dub meditation 'The Serpent & The Jaguar' from Deadbeat before swerving into the equally tender folds of Triptease & Yonatan Levi's 'Amniotic Jive'. Tuccillo opens up the B-side with some crisp, immersive broken beat rhythmic incantations, and then Wareika round the record off with a smouldering piece of hi-tech jazz from the outer rim. This is subtle, elegant minimal at its warmest, make no mistake.

Review: While it's difficult to second-guess what Placid will select for each volume of his We're Going Deep label's compilation-style EPs, you can guarantee that it will be timeless-sounding, exquisitely produced, and most likely have some link to deep house, electro, acid or sci-fi techno. All of those boxes are ticked and then some on volume eight, which skips between melodious, acid-flecked dancefloor wooziness (Affie and Leila Yusuf's 'Dublvr'), warming sunrise-ready electro bliss (Zobol's 'Sense The Consensus'), ultra-deep, eyes-closed acid electro (Acidulant's 'The View of Her Shade') and IDM-tinged, intergalactic and dramatically pitched-down proto-jungle (Type-303's exceptional 'Knowhere'). Like its predecessors, this EP is nothing less than essential.

Roger Van Lunteren - "Le Dee Trois Trio Prends Trois" (4:18)
Review: Since launching two years ago, Bristol's We're Going Deep label has consistently delivered some of the deepest and most atmospheric club tracks around. The music they champion is, as many in the West Country would no doubt confirm, "proper deep". That's certainly the case with the tracks on the label's seventh multi-artist extravaganza. Acid Test regular Tin Man kicks things off with a touch of TB-303-doused proto-house minimalism ('I Said Acid'), before Rai Scott takes us 50 leagues below the sea on the ultra-deep, drowsy and hypnotic house cut 'I'll Meet You on the Dancefloor'. Over on side B, Sound Synthesis's 'Necessary Order' is a simply breath-taking trip into deep electro territory, while Roger Van Lunteren's EP-closing contribution is a deep (and deeply psychedelic) acid house trip.

This seventh volume in their on going series of old school dynamite joints kicks off with a banger from Blu Cantrell. 'Breathe' (feat Sean Paul) has the reggae man dropping his trademark bars in stylised vocal form with Cantrell''s own delivery offering a clean, icy counterpoint over nice low end bump and Cali-style synth lines. Review: Self-proclaimed purveyors of 'music for the fringe class' Talking Drums have been responsible for some terrifically cosmic, percussive and oddball re-edits over the years, something that makes their self-released EP series a genuine must-check. Volume six boasts three more eccentric but essential treats, with the Manchester-based crew successfully breathing new life into some pleasingly obscure gems. A-side 'Air Ecosse' sounds like a quirky, mid-80s European workout - all cascading, chiming synth sounds, reverb-laden percussion solos, whispered female vocal snippets, staccato machine drums and seriously squelchy bass. Over on side B, 'Too Yacht To Handle' is - as the title hints - a tidy revision of a groovy, loose-limbed yacht-rock funker, while 'Aorwaves' is a slow-motion AOR disco gem.
