  1. The Sonics - "Find Myself Another Girl" (2:45)
  2. Scam - "Spooky" (3:56)
Review: Big Crown bring the beat heat once again with two raw funk / soul gems. The Sonics' rare-as-hens-teeth northern soul anthem "Find Myself Another Girl" gets liberated from its high ticket collector price with this much needed reissue while an old master tape prowls to life on the B as Texan troupe S.C.A.M's take on the well-covered Classics IV 1968 standard "Spooky" enjoys a release for the first time. Divine.

  15. Who Is Gil Scott-Heron? (DVD)
Review: Originally released as a Record Store Day exclusive (and often fetching L50 a pop), Gil Scott Heron recorded these raw, stripped-back versions from his classics during the years he wrote I'm New Here. There's a delicate, fragile nature to his voice that's usually backed up with much broader, fuller instrumentation. Bringing his stories and emotions to the fore, it's one of the most touching documents he's ever done. Complete with a DVD documentary and unseen footage, this is an incredible insight into one of soul's most pained and complex characters.

Review: Having previously tried his hand at revivalist disco, jazz-funk and Afro-funk, it was probably only a matter of time before Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart tried his hand at Jorge Ben style samba-pop. Naturaza sees him joining forces with Ipanema-born musician and vocalist Jonathan Da Silva under the Jaoa Selva pseudonym. Musically, the album sounds like it could have been recorded in Brazil in the late '60s or early '70s, such is the fuzzy authenticity of the duo's production, instrumentation and song-writing skills. It's packed with summery, feel-good gems, the majority of which boast the distinctive shuffle of vintage samba and the jaunty musicality of early Azymuth.

Review: It truly is amazing that Candi Staton is still putting out albums in 2018. The 78 year-old singer is an absolute force of nature, never content with the status-quo and famed for reinventing herself on every LP. Her last appearance on vinyl was on 2008's Who's Hurting Now?, out through London's own Honest Jon's Records, and that was a much deeper, more sensual affair that touched upon many elements of soul. Here, on Unstoppable, Staton revisits her Alabama roots, coming through with ten tracks that add a little rock sensibility to the soulful aesthetic of her voice, making the whole LP a sort of modern rendition of blues. There is also a cover of Patti Smith's "People Have The Power", among other beauties which we're sure you'll enjoy.

Review: Sporty Cat sykes delivers the album he always wanted to in the 80s. Laid down the traditional Tascam way, the talented Michigan multi-instrumentalist digs deep into soul palette with equal measures of organic and electronic instrumentation. Expect heavy waves of atmospheres, rich layers of funk and consistent levels of emotion as we glide and stumbled between each touching moment; the drifting sunset ballad "The Best Of My Love", the weeping keys and fluttering slap bass of "Togetherness", the cloud surfing dream boogie of "Sometimes", the rude synth bass and sultry R&B vocals of "If You Want Me", the list goes on...

Review: Foster Emerson Sylvers was a member of the Sylvers when he was just a kid, and his debut LP form 1973 preceded what the Jackson Five achieved towards the end of the decade. At the time of his self-titled debut, Sylvers was only 11 years old, and the kid from Philly already had enough elegance and panache to perform on any stage across the globe. This magnificent LP, reissued by the trusted Mr Bongo, is a pleasure in every single way...for the artist's voice, for the diversity of these soul ballads, and for their irreplaceable charm. There is so much love, so much passion, and so much (true) soul across these 11 tracks - not to mention the fact that tey have been near impossible to find until now! What a corker - do not let this one slide!

Review: Vocally-led by child sensation, Foster Sylvers, The Sylvers family grew into their own throughout the 70s, and 1973's The Sylvers II really instilled their sound as the gold standard fo funk music. We're talking about a family of kids who were all incredible musicians, truly offering the world a heartfelt performance, whichever aesthetic they were going for. Mr Bongo has delivered the goods once again with this reissue, and we are totally stoked about the fact that we are receiving the sort of funk and soul which still has not been experienced by everyone. It is about the mystique, it is about the charm, and it's most certainly high time for some soothing soul direct from the source - oh, and check that bassline on the magnetic "Handle It". Recommended.
