Review: Oumou Sangare is an icon of Malian music, and African music overall. She first came to attention in the early 90s with songs descended from wassoulou traditional hunting songs. She's remained a creative and visible force ever since, and now she's back with her first album of new material since 2017's critically acclaimed Mogoya. Timbuktu fuses Sangare's Malian sound with elements of blues, folk and rock to create a timeless body of work which winds up all her own. You'll instantly be transported into her rich and rooted world of sound, where she uses her position as a hugely influential African musician to push for women's rights amongst other socially-conscious themes.

Review: Longtime Malian composer and vocalist Sali Sidibe is a treasure of African folk music, having released a plethora of albums on cassette and CD on various labels across the continent for over two decades before ceasing in around the early noughties. Born in a village in the Wassoulou region of southern Mali, Sidibe sang in Bambara, her songs often backed by a range of traditional rhythms including didai and sogonikun. These fusions would later contribute to the formation of the now very popular Wassoulou movement, a form of dance music performed mostly by women covering themes including childbearing and polygamy. Now Musique Malienne reissues a rare 80s cassette credited to Sidibe, on which detuned electric synths and steadily sequenced electronic drums back up her defiant, snappy, almost rhythmlessly rapped vocals.

Review: Tireless diggers and world class reissue merchants Mr Bongo have done it again with this one. They discovered The Star Beams when one of their tracks was on a Disco Calypso compilation, then went on a mission to track down the original anymore material from the band, who turned out to be based in South Africa instead of the Carribean. The resulting record is a real gem - disco, funk and jazz all get chewed up and spat out across four fantastically timeless cuts of dance floor dynamite. "Disco Stomp" in particular you might already know as Theo Parrish has been dropping in his sets for time.

Review: The NGO Permlay de Gozhou-Zagna - a village in Ivory Coast - Italian musician Samuele Strufaldi and Musica Macondo Records all come together for this sublime collaborative album. It's a real gem of a record that is which is sure to excite fans of Afro, international and worldly broken beats whether old or new. It's an earthy, organic mix of folk mutterings and traditional instrumentation with funky rhythms and jazzy sax melodies that all brim with life and are packed with richly layered percussion. Proceeds from its sale will go towards a new community library and space in the village.
