Real With You (3:45)
Real With You (acoustic version) (3:43)
Review: Hip-hop artist Shing02 (Shing Annen) is a longstanding fixture of chill hop, and is notable for his cross-cultural focus, having been born in Japan but growing up in Western cities. With a precise, multilingual emceeing style few of his contemporaries can match, he's also known for his involvement with Nujabes and the soundtrack for Samurai Champloo, we're happy to see he's still hard at it. 'Real With You' is a collaboration with contemporary lo-fi hip-hop/chill-hop artist 14? and is a bright and serene wonker, lyrically dealing in themes of going with the flow, revisiting memories and letting go.

Review: Aussie duo Jayse & Steve P are so low profile that we can't source quite enough information to introduce them, but when the edits are this good - we'll just let the music speak for itself. The pair are back with another collection of boogie-funk edits; on the A-side there's some sexy and neon-lit late-night vibes, and over the flip the retro styles carry over with a low slung electro-funk jam featuring a quite familiar and absolutely infectious hook.

Review: Limited to just 100 copies, edit masters Jayse and Steve P have graced us with an ultra-rare pair of deep disco reworks here, cut to a 7" vinyl. The pair's releasing oeuvre is mysterious and matter-of-fact, never letting on as to the tracks' sample origins, but what we do know is that this is a stellar instalment to their prolific edits output - check out the orange, green and purple label releases too.

Roots/Lovers Rock
Lady Lady (3:38)
Loving Kind (3:58)
Review: This new 7" from the Far East is part of the Neville King Lovers Rock Revisited series. It's as smooth and heartfelt as roots reggae gets with One Blood and Simplicity really tapping into a loved-up vibe. 'Lady Lady' has meandering basslines and lazy horns unfurling next to the buttery sweet and tender vocals which muse on a dream girl. On the B-side is 'Loving Kind', a more traditional dub with tropical island vibes, subtle steel drums and this time a female vocal delivering a carefree lament.

Mercedes Benz (4:31)
Mercedes Benz (version) (3:36)
Review: Prince Fatty's 'Mercedes Benz' with Shniece and Horseman is a rub-a-dub version of a 1970s hit from Janis Joplin that now gets a very special pressing courtesy of Lovedub Limited. The A-side kicks off with the spine-tingling and epic original vocal before disappearing into a world of reverb. At that point the dubby low end arrives and brings a different vibe to the stunning vocals but one that really makes a mark next to new bars from Horseman, police sirens and funky riffs. It's a tough sound system groove that is backed with a fine version and has been a firm fixture of Prince Fatty's record box for a while now.

Review: Rock Hall Of Fame nominee Todd Rundgren is an accomplished songwriter and ever-innovative producer. Here he links up with someone just as talented in the shape of Sparks, who is an eclectic and quixotic creative and pillar of the modern musical world. 'Your Fandango' (served up here on a limited coloured vinyl 7") is the third single from Rundgren's forthcoming Space Force album. It's a wall of sound with space rock riffs, gauzy textures and freaky vocals. After this comes the album with guests spots from Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo and Muslim hip hop artist Narcy amongst much more.

Review: Caito Sanchez lives in New York but was born in Panama and is a dedicated drummer who has spent years as a sideman. He's been honing his craft since the early 2000s and has played with the likes of Charles Bradley, Lee Fields and Brian Jackson. Now he finally makes the big step of going it alone and this debut single shows what he is capable of. He takes care of drums, but also bass, guitar and lead voice on a pair of nuggets that are heavy and psychedelic Spanish rock tunes full of fresh new wave sounds.

Notice Me (part 2 - Clivilles & Cole club vocal - 7" edit) (3:44)
Review: BBE is the kind of label you can trust with any kind of reissue project, and when they call upon DJ Spinna and Kai Alce to look back over the foundations of house music, you know you're about to get a masterclass. This intermittent series has seen the two US DJ/producers picking through seminal house joints, editing the most crucial mixes to fit on a 7" as a neatly presented series for anyone wanting to point out exactly what house music really is. This time around they've turned to Sandee's 'Notice Me' - a Latin house joint from 1988 which rocked clubs like Tunnel and Palladium in NYC and Riviera in Chicago upon its original release.

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind (3:57)
Air Of Love (3:54)
Review: For her latest trick, long-serving Canadian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ivana Santilli has decided to cover one of her favourite Level 42 tracks, 1983's 'Out of Sight, Out of Mind'. Her take, which includes additional lyrics she wrote especially, sits somewhere between glossy mid-80s soul and colourful boogie. It has a much more electrofunk and soul flavour than the British band's Brit-funk/jazz-funk original, which is no bad thing. B-side 'Air of Love' sees Santilli dip the tempo and charge towards the close-dance zone - all sparse, slow-motion Loose Ends beats, chiming synthesiser melodies, dreamy chords and her own impeccable, slow-burn lead vocals.

Review: The Austin Boogie crew welcome you back to their particular dancefloor with another rather steam offering from Saucy Lady. This intergalactic talent hails from Japan but lives in Boston and operates, musically, amongst the stars. Her latest drop is a mix of city pop, boogie, r&b and disco with gorgeous metropolitan vibes, low lit chords and a killer bassline topped off with the poetic vocals. Next to the original comes an instrumental that's more paired back but no less emotional. An absolutely gorgeous single that will lighten up any party.

Review: The Far East is calling once more with this latest Japanese take on reggae and ska from the good people at Urban Discos. It is a high tempo and raucous offering from Scafull King with two different versions of the same tune on both sides. 'Lyin' Ass Bitch' (Kaela Kimura version) is first and brings bustling drums and imposing ska rhythms with layers of organ and fiery vocals making for a big and in-your-face sound. The second version is even more rock-edged with hammering drums and walls of fuzzy guitar.

Review: Dynamite Cuts brings the heat once more with a second volume of their Sound Music 45s series. Siegfried Schwab takes care of the A-side with 'Getting High', a scorching funk workout with hard-worked guitar chords and precise percussion over lots of wah-wah effects. 'Feel It; flip the script with a superbly stripped-down jazz-funk lounge sound. Back In Love Again (4:53)
Review: Birmingham, Alabama artist David Sea was the front man for his family's gospel outfit The Question Marks in 1970. He had an extraordinary voice and that is very much front and centre on this new 7" from Jai Alai. It takes two of his most tremendous tunes from his Groove Mission album in 1996 with 'Back In The Day' and 'Back In Love Again' both featuring. The former is a lung-busting number full of raw yearning and lots of nostalgia before some hip hop breaks cut up the midsection, then the flipside is a nice bit of r&b with smooth grooves and lush pianos next to his trademark buttery vocals.

Universe (Extraterrestrial Search Contact Tones) (2:29)
Review: George Semper's 1984 album Themes For Television, Sports and Aerobics is one of the most brilliantly bonkers you're ever likely to hear. It featured the veteran jazz-man reach for the most intergalactic-sounding electronic instruments he could find and lay down a series of short, library music style missives that still sound like the product of some kind of demented acid trip. The people behind Dynamite Cuts are obviously fans, because they've decided to stick a small selection of cuts from the hard-to-find album on this tidy 7" single. On the A you'll find the deep space, jazz-fired electro-lounge madness of "Pretty Lady", while the flip boasts two shorter cuts: jazzy synth-scape "Universe" and spacey ambient doodle "Extraterrestrial Search Contact Tones".

Review: The Record Store Day 2023 specials are coming thick and fast and thankfully the quality seems high this year. This 7" in particular is a crucial one for any Southern soul fans. It is a mega rare one from the vast JB Records vaults that due to popular demand finally gets an official reissue. I Love You (4:24)
Review: A short name hides a long story - Detroit-born Chad Hughs graduated from the same high school as Diana Ross, going onto become a multi-talented musician as well as a teacher and composer. The fourth release from cd exclusive vinyl pressers Jai Alai, collectors can now own this unique 7" containing two completely different sides of Sir Wick from his two albums. A side's title track 'Seal My Heart' contains the vocal talents of Sedalia Marie, with layered vocals and a baseline that makes this pure soul song feel deeply cinematic. The B side has been decades in the making, selected from a fully orchestrated musical in the works since 1996, finally being recorded and completed in 2017. These two tracks are deeply sentimental ditties of doting young love, and now two rare soul ballads from a musical luminary are available for the first time on a 45. What better soundtrack to date night than these?

They have been turning it out at a steady rate recently on labels like Oscarson but mostly Flower. Following a couple of standout 7"s in 'Tripping Out' and 'Let Some Love In' already this year comes 'Time Trip.' Hey Girl (2:16)
Almost Grown (3:02)
Review: Compromise doesn't always diminish results: such can easily be said about 'Hey Girl', the 1966 single by the Small Faces and an emblem of the mod scene. The song was written by the band's core members, East End mods Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane, and was a compromise between them and their manager, who wanted a more commercial sound. That said, even though the band still managed to claw back some of their more down-to-earth, true-to-their-cire R&B and soulful stylings, the song still reached number ten on the UK Singles Chart and was later included on their debut album on Decca.

Review: The Nunorthern Soul label heads into its second decade of operation and does so by welcoming back label regular Benjamin J Smith. He's a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer whose sound tick all of the textbook Balearic boxes but with a little extra magic. He shows that again here with 'Marina Del Rey', a gloriously sunny sound with lavish and lush strings and gently swaying grooves with a mix of 60s and Library vibes. The track is now getting a vinyl reissue 12 years later, thanks to JalapeNo Records. Review: Smoove & Turrell return with a killer single, which opens with the gospel backing of label mate Izo FitzRoy before John's incredible voice and social lyricism and Smoove's unmistakeable production lift us up into 'The Light'. Legendary US Blue Note keyboard genius Ronnie Foster joins the party as only he can; one of the very few instrumental guests Smoove has ever wanted (or needed) beyond his own band. With frontman John Turrell repurposing the cynicism towards the powers-that-be - be it the media or parliament - to positive ends, this is a veritable paean and urgent call to "rise above it and let the light shine in", in his own words.

This time out he offers up the fresh Nebuer EP which is a project undertaken in which he mixes up sample-heavy house and hip-hop sounds, all in a style with which he has become closely associated. The artist has recently become a father for the first time and so that life event was a big influence on this studio work and each makes a specific reference to the different steps on his journey into fatherhood. That makes this a truly personal work but also one that never forgets the club and so the beats remain heavy, compelling, and packed with soulful flourishes.

Joy Of A Toy (2:49)
Review: Pulled from the earliest days of The Soft Machine when they were closer to a psychedelic rock band than a tripped-out jazz concern, Universal Japan have reproduced a very limited single version of 'Why Are We Sleeping?'. The song itself is still a nebulous, twisting and turning freak ride riding on a satisfyingly heavy rhythm section, embellished with organs and following droll poetry to the pure 60s burst of the chorus, as masterful now as it was mind-blowing back in 1968. On the B-side, 'Joy Of A Toy' is a subtly funky affair laced with languid wah wah guitar and artful dynamic shifts from the mellow beginnings to a rollicking beatdown by the crescendo, and all in under three minutes. Collectors will especially enjoy the Japanese artwork on this unique single, but just having these two gems on a handy 7" is worth the price of entry alone.

Review: Floridian musician Tedi Robinson specialises in what he calls "mellowfunkism" - a smooth, colourful, Prince-influenced take on retro-futurist soul that various draws inspiration from jazz-funk, '80s groove, contemporary R&B and P-funk. It's this attractive, effortlessly soulful trademark sound that's showcased on Robinson's second Six Nine Music "45" as Son of Pearl. Review: Released in March 1993, Suede's self-titled debut was a critical and commercial triumph, winning the prestigious Mercury Music Prize and hitting the #1 spot on the UK Album Chart. Featuring the classic singles 'The Drowners', 'Animal Nitrate', 'So Young', and 'Metal Mickey', 'Suede' sold 100,000 copies in its first week, making it the fastest-selling debut album ever in the UK at the time. So to celebrate its 30th anniversary, Edsel presents a newly-mastered run of Suede's foremost singles from the album, with 'Animal Nitrate' among them, here incarnated on a 7" picture disc. A titular reference to the muscle relaxant and inhalant drug amyl nitrite - that's poppers to you and me - the song is a blitzing homage to the substances on offer at their time, amid a climate of youth cynicism felt by the band at the time.

So Young (3:39)
High Rising (5:13)
Review: As part of a comprehensive reissue of Suede's early singles and albums - the songs which earned them the early 90s limelight - comes this reissued 7" picture-disc version of 'So Young' and 'High Rising'. Both featuring on the self-titled debut from 1993, these were but two of the tracks that contributed to Suede's rise to stardom, and which help to cement their impressive selling of 100,000 copies in their first week. Foreboding a full, newly-mastered edition of the album, these two throwbacks are a reminder of what makes a band great in its early incarnation.

The Sunburst Band - "Secret Life Of Us" (Special 45 version) (3:27)
Dave & Maurissa - "Look At The Stars" (2-Step Soul mix) (5:02)
Review: This 2023 RSD release on Z Records is a treat for fans of soulful disco and 2-step garage. The A-side features a special 45 version of 'Secret Life Of Us', a catchy and uplifting anthem from The Sunburst Band's fourth album. The B-side showcases a 2-step soul mix of 'Look At The Stars', a smooth and romantic tune from Dave Lee's Produced With Love II album. Both tracks showcase the vocal talents of Maurissa Rose, who adds warmth and emotion to the songs.

Baile De San Juan (4:21)
Que Siga La Farra (4:13)
Review: Ricardo Suntaxi's wonderful 'Baile De San Juan' perfectly encapsulates the vibrant spirit of traditional Latin rhythms. With plenty of pulsing drum machine beats and dazzlingly infectious melodies, Suntaxi blends elements of salsa, merengue, and cumbia to create a truly dynamite dancefloor anthem. The track cannot fail to transport you to the lively streets of San Juan where the music fills the air during festive celebrations. 'Que Siga La Farra' on the flip has more of a dub feel but is still pack with vivid and vibrant melody that is a testament to Suntaxi's talent for infusing contemporary flair into classic Latin sounds and will ensure a lively atmosphere wherever it's played.

Rapido (Djar One instrumental remix) (4:09)
Review: A limited green version of this vital 7" is well worth copping as Svinkels are the most rock'n'roll group in French rap. They have respect for the old school but also innovate in new school ways. Their fourth album came back in 2021 and had four tunes composed by Djaar One including the original of 'Rapido.' Here he returns to mix the tune in his classic bomb-bap vibe which pays tribute to the golden age and acts like Cypress Hill. An instrumental comes on the flip side but it's that killer A-side that wins this one.

I'll Say It Again (4:44)
Same Time, Same Place (6:18)
Review: Sweet Linda Divine has a big old set of lungs on her. She proves that here with this 7" on Dynamite Cuts which comes on both ball vinyl and limited edition white wax. Both sides offer very different sounds. 'I'll Say It Again' is a raw cut with fat funk bass riffs and lively drums, expressive yelps and wails that cannot fail to bring the steaminess. On the flip, 'Same Time, Same Place' slows it right down to a more sentimental and heartbroken soul sound but still with plenty of power.
