Review: The Pimpala West Coast Classics series does exactly what it says on the label, delivering tidy 7" singles featuring new edits of much-loved 90s West Coast hip-hop gems. This time round, the scalpel fiend at the controls is Ronnie Frazzle. He first turns his attention to Snoop's Dr Dre-produced mega-hit 'Gin & Juice', a delightfully laid-back 1993 number that's often cited as one of the finest moments of hip-hop's "golden era". Over on the flip it's all about DJ Quik's 1992 Profile Records single 'Jus Lyke Compton', an even more laid-back and groovy affair that pays tribute to the notorious LA neighbourhood that became the focal point of the enormous "gangsta" hip-hop scene of the 1990s.

Review: Finland's exceptional We Jazz label continues with 'Tremendoce' series from Otis Sandsjo's Y-OTIS with four fresh new pieces pressed up to this vital 7". All of the tunes here are super fresh and forward-thinking with Kathrin Pechlof on harp adding another dimension to the sound. The joys flute on 'Tremendoce Part 2' is light and airy, the drums busy and meandering. 'Part 3' is a chunkier, slower tune with a big sax lead that makes you move your body and then 'Skerry Part 1' brings the mellifluous piano vibes. 'Skerry Part 2' layers up big kick drums with lurching grooves and busy oboe work to make for some superb avant-garde action.

Review: Richie Spice is a contemporary roots artist with a fine sound and growing fan base. He latest is a fine return with classic roots producer Clive Hunt on the buttons and helping to bring some history to his sounds. This one is a re-make of a Max Romeo hit that reasserts Spice's place atop the modern day pile. "Valley Of Jehoshaphat (Red Hot)" is just that, with expansive vocals and a widescreen dub riddim, while "Di Dub Dance" (dub mix) provide more direct thrills. Review: Pulled from the earliest days of The Soft Machine when they were closer to a psychedelic rock band than a tripped-out jazz concern, Universal Japan have reproduced a very limited single version of 'Why Are We Sleeping?'. The song itself is still a nebulous, twisting and turning freak ride riding on a satisfyingly heavy rhythm section, embellished with organs and following droll poetry to the pure 60s burst of the chorus, as masterful now as it was mind-blowing back in 1968. On the B-side, 'Joy Of A Toy' is a subtly funky affair laced with languid wah wah guitar and artful dynamic shifts from the mellow beginnings to a rollicking beatdown by the crescendo, and all in under three minutes. Collectors will especially enjoy the Japanese artwork on this unique single, but just having these two gems on a handy 7" is worth the price of entry alone.

Review: Silent Majority was one of many monikers for an enduring Philadelphia soul band best known as The Formations, made up of Jerry Akines, Johnny Bellmon, Reginald Turner and Victor Drayton. Their chameleonic name-changes - which also included Hot Ice and The Corner Boys - allegedly owed to a lack of commercial success, which produced an incentive for the band to constantly metamorphose at the suggestion of various labels and other market forces. Regardless of success in their own time, these Silent Majority gems, 'Frightened Girl' and 'Something New About You', are more than tantamount to their talents, sifted from the only two 7" vinyl records attributed to the band in the late 60s.

Review: Osei Korankye hails from Accra, Ghana and is a talented musician known as one of his homeland's last remaining seperewa musiciana. These tracks throw it back to the heyday of the sound in 1970 but were recorded in Brooklyn, NY as well as Accra when Korankye linked up with Super Yamba bandleader and drummer Daniel Yount for a few gigs in New York City in 2017. It was an effortless collaboration that resulted in some super psychedelic funk tunes that are designed for carefree dancing.

Review: The much loved Tramp label is mighty good at serving up the soul and this time it is the buttery smooth sounds of Stroke they turn to for this reissue. The original 45rpm is one of those rare as hens' teeth cuts that cost way too much to buy even if you do track one down. Review: The super Tramp label has done it again here with another mighty soul 7" that packs an irresistible punch. These cuts are super hard to find and fairly pricey for anyone who manages to unearth them, though they have been out on the superb Feeling Nice Vol.4 compilation album. Donnie Sanders is in top form here with 'Shing-A-Ling Baby' starting with big raw horns perform a smooth and low slung bassline arrives and things get moving with swagger. 'Naptown USA' is a more upbeat and party starting funk cut with big organ chords.

Review: Top Sounds digs into the garage rock archives and has turned out some real treasure. The Syn were a short-lived but now cult outfit that, in 1967, released just two 45 rpms for the Deram label. Ever since then, fans of them and 60s rock alike, have fawned over them and collectors have paid high prices to own them. Review: Long-serving New Orleans soul man Willie West has previous form when it comes to collaborating with The Soul Investigators, Finland's funkiest backing band. He's joined forces with them plenty of times over the years, though this is their first joint release for nearly two years. "I Just Can't Leave You Alone" is particularly sweet, with West's heart-felt vocal combining brilliantly with guest Jimi Tenor's drifting flute lines and the band's rich jazz guitars, fuzzy grooves and '60s style production. The sublime quality of their playing and production is even clearer on the accompanying Instrumental take.

Review: Two of Finnish label Timmons regulars in their house band Cold Diamond & Mink and heart-melting vocalist Emilia Sisco come together once more here following previous successes such as 2019's vital 7", 'Don't Believe You Like That'. Review: Soul Bros Inc recorded one of the greatest ever Northern Soul sounds when they lay down 'Pyramid'. The baritone male vocal is impossibly warm and smoking as it effortlessly delivers lines about the building love between new partners. Swirling strings add that lavish Northern Soul touch and you are both moved to dance moves and moved to tears as it plays out. Review: By 1965 Little Richard was already 15 years deep into his career blazing a trail through youth culture with his infectious rock n' roll revolution, but he still had the chops to pen a monster hit. Flip the record over and you're treated to Spyder Turner with his debut single from 1964 - a stomping masterclass of Motor City soul all about his beloved mode of transport. Review: St Paul's Catholic Church in Louisiana was hosting a summer youth program in 1970 and 1971 and it was there that Tunnie Smith was spotted by Father George Artist, who saw potential in his great singing abilities. Smith was introduced to local musicians and bands as a result and was soon playing the local circuit. He landed a record label 18 months later and his first single came in 1973. Success followed as did an album that never actually got roasted. It was then in 1983 that he laid down the slow-burning mid-tempo soul numbers which feature in this 7" for the first time.

Review: Tunnie Smith was born to sing, and 'Dancing On Da Clouds' is the biggest belting under his belt. Handpicked by his pastor in the early 1970s, this lesser-known golden child soon found himself touring every corner of his home state of Louisiana. His first record deal followed, which led to a slew of promised releases and shelvings, rises and falls. 10 years later, a chance meeting with producer George 'Paco' Patterson helped catapult Smith to indie stardom, and his relatively underground status helped foster the uniquely atmospheric mood of these two devotional pieces. They somehow straddle the rapture of soul and the later washiness of dream pop; a strangely beautiful release.

Review: Not to be confused with the independent funk and soul exhumers Strut Records, who were acquired by the !K7 monopoly in 2008, Strut Records (here recorded as Strutt) was a short-lived North Carolinian, now apparently resurrected, record label active in the early 1970s and exclusively dedicated to the work of the band the Soulfull Strutters. The Fayetteville octet drove a rousing bargain with the soul stomper 'Let Your Feelings Go', indeed seeming to incite the mass-reflexive impulse buy (and with no remorse) by entreating the listener to abandon all emotional valence and make a kind of Kierkegaardian leap of faith - not only into the void of love, but into a commitment to dancing and dancing well, as well as into copping the record. Clever.

Review: Stroom has another great audio curiosity on its hands here with this 7" from Sonoko. She is a Japanese artist who works in the worlds of ambient and ambient, chanson and elevator, experimental and folk. Both of the cuts here are uplifting sounds that will bring some joy to the gloom of this season. They were made by the artist somewhere in the 90s with 'Meditation' a sensuous sound with hotel lobby piano playing and delicate vocals while 'Un homme et une femme' has a more icy and cold electronic sound with delicate keys twinkling like snow.

Review: Sndtrak has been doing some audacious cut ups over the years, and his flips: Triple Lindy LP made that abundantly clear when it landed earlier this year. It was a lot to digest, so he's opted to pick six of the hottest joints and squeeze them onto this razor-sharp 7". No source material is too classic to be chopped and mutated with his seriously funky touch, whether it's Queen, Rick James or Tom Tom Club getting the treatment. Taking iconic grooves and giving them a sloppy shuffle, he ekes out some utterly insane grooves from these perennial hits and makes them sound like you've never heard before. If you want to please the crowd and bust their minds open in the same beat, this is your weapon of choice.

Review: Street Corner's FliP Sessions is a great source of beats for hip-hop heads and this eighth volume is no different. It's limited to just 200 copies and features five more exquisite little sketches that are loveably rough around the edges and full of laidback and dusty soul. After the busted breaks of GREENMINDZ, Toby Glider zones you out with lo-fi loops and Beaulemaire brings heavier beats. Side 2 has a more jazz cut from Elusive and star gazing cosmic melody from Shri!. All five of these are delightful little pieces.

Review: 1994's original pressing of Steely & Clevie's outstanding leftfield production with Johnny Clarke's vocals is well worth inspecting, but you might struggle to find one these days, and it'll be pricey if you do, because it's become something of a classic 45. Thankfully it gets reissued here with A-side original 'Leggo Violence' rolling lazy drums while the Clarke vocals soar high and sweet despite what they sing about. On the flip is a smooth rolling version that allows that super bassline to do its thing free from any distraction, and all with extra dub goodness.

Review: Come on, its 2016, of course there are soul bands from Russia. More specifically, there's soul bands from Russia that make absolutely incredible music, and The Soul Surfers are one of them. They've been busy over the last 6-7 years, and the Spasibo label have been instrumental in getting their sound across to the masses. "Vladimir's Groove" is deep, funky and wet, filled with an awesome slap-back bass, a trippy cascade of organs and just a general feeling of "yeah". "Igor's Groove" is slower, more laid-back and possibly even better and bolder, bringing out the best out of this band and solidifying them as serious contenders for best soul kings of the post 2000's. A band to watch - keep 'em peeled!

Review: The Soul Surfers & Shawn Lee have linked their creative energies once more with a new pair of singles for the cultured Spasibo Records. Both tracks on this limited gold vinyl were recorded in 2018. One was captured at Moscow's Magnetone studio during Lee's visit for the premiere of a movie documenting his prior recording with The Soul Surfers, and the other was recorded remotely with The Soul Surfers at their Nizhniy Novgorod headquarters and Lee at his London studio, The Shop. Review: Soul Supreme is a master keyboardist best known for his covers of classic hip-hop songs by the likes of Mos Def, MF Doom and A Tribe Called Quest. Here side-steps his covers duties to handle remix productions for two of his contemporaries in the Netherlands neo-soul scene - Gallowstreet, LYMA, Shamis and Rebiere. The A side lends a wonky future house feel (a-la GoldLink, Crackazat) to '52 North', Gallowstreet's ode to the city of Amsterdam. The B tune strips it back to a lo-fi soul bapper, fleshing out its theme of loneliness in parenting.

Review: Fresh from 68: Atlanta family trio Scott Three only ever recorded two singles and remained something of a local sensation thereafter. It's a shame as there's a real Jackson Five feel to their delivery, especially on "Running Wild" where the session band breaks down and each member pops above the dense music bed. "Gotta Find A New Love" takes a much bluesier tact with rougher instrumentation and an almost rocky build on the choruses. Spotted passing hands for sizeable sums on one bidding site, this is the first time it's been pressed in over 45 years.

Review: The unequalled Soul Jazz label is serving up some monster funk this month and they don't come much bigger than these two cuts from Chuck Carbo. Opener 'Can I Be Your Squeeze' is a super catchy, break heavy and funk fulled party jam to destroy the floor. Written and produced by the celebrated Eddie Bo, it comes with big drums from New Orleans stick man James Black. On the flip is the ever so slightly more mellow but not less dance 'Take Care Your Homework Friend.' These have long been hard to find and now come pressed nice and loud on fresh wax.

Review: The Summits are a beloved fixture on the Soul Direction label and have plenty of fans in the wider soul collecting community. As a result they are now familiar to many and their track 'Window Shopping' emerged from an almost-lost master tape. It has previously been available only in digital format. on the flip, meanwhile, Phillips traverses diverse musical territories spanning from feel-good disco to funky fusion and modern soul. Among the six tracks recovered from numerous tapes, this one, 'People Clap Your Hands' stands out. It has never before been on vinyl and is a lo-fi, funk fuelled gem with soul infused vocals.

Review: Soul-Direction Records recently had huge success with the release of the Decisions' 'We're In Love/I Love You' and now follow it up with another vital 45rpm after a conversation with Numero who gave their permission. As such this is the only 7" vinyl release of 'P's and Q's' and its instrumental version. These tracks were part of the quartet from Washington DC's recordings with DC International. The band generated plenty of local buzz but never quite got the major label deal they craved. On these evidence of these two, though, they should have. 'P's & Q's' is lively and funky work, with heart-melting vocals and super smooth grooves.

Review: You'll struggle to find a more loved-up and life-affirming chunk of proto-disco brilliance than The Sisters Love's 1973 "Give Me Your Love". The record's lasting impact can be seen in the number of times that it's been reworked, re-edited or bootlegged over the years. Here it gets an official 7" reissue via Soul Brother Records. It sounds as good as ever, with the all-female group's now familiar vocals rising above Blaxploitation style guitars, fluttering flutes and powerful horns. It's a celebratory release, and then some. This time round it's accompanied by a lesser-known gem, "Try It, You'll Like It", which first featured on the B-side of a 1973 single. This is a powerful chunk of conscious funk/soul fusion of the sort that was incredibly popular during the period it was recorded.

Here he takes a similar approach, placing the rap vocals from the 1995 hip-hop classic 'How High' atop a suitably funky, lolloping beat crafted from clavinet-heavy sections from Stevie's party-starting floor-heater 'Superstition'. It works remarkably well on the A-side vocal mix, and those who'd not heard either track would be convinced that there was no mash-up antics going on. Over on side B you'll find an instrumental mix that showcases Soopasoul's editing skills; minus the vocals, is a fine re-edit of the Wonder-ful jam.

Review: Sonar Kolletkiv has dug deep for this one and got the rights to reissue Shirley Turner's 1965 recording 'I Wish You A World Of Happiness. ' It its one of those set soul jams that has been an evergreen fav and crate digger's delight thanks to its Northern soul elegance, controlled but emotive vocals and snappy drums. The KBCS is a union of musicians who all hail from Hamburg, Germany. They have their own unique styles but complement one another perfectly on their cover version on the A-side. They bring their own lush soul vibes and more contemporary drums to a version that will get floors going, no doubt.
