  1. Walk A Mile In My Shoes (Timo Garcia & The Chesire Catz remix)
  2. Walk A Mile In My Shoes (Tom Belton S Ssl Re-rub)
Review: Coldcut return with the stand-out single from their critically-acclaimed album, "Sound Mirrors". The pioneering duo take Joe South's classic 70s hit "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" and re-work it in the tradition which started with their own "Autumn Leaves" and incorporates Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" amongst others. And, as usual, Coldcut know how to pick a collaborator. Robert Owens should need no introduction. One of the true legends of house music, his career as a musical innovator (as well as the possessor of an all-time great voice) runs from pioneer days as one half of Fingers Inc in Chicago in the 80s right up to collaborations with Photek and London Elektricity, via any number of classic tunes including "Tears", "I'll Be Your Friend" and "Ordinary Son". The version of the tune included on the single ties the epic nature of Coldcut's production to a skipping, swinging house rhythm and the kind of anthemic build that leaves you exhausted. It's a truly beautiful piece of music, the contrast between the delicacy of Owens' voice and the weight of the orchestration perfectly realised. And that's before you've even reached the mixes. Tiga takes the original, strips out the music and replaces it with technoid pulses and a harder dancefloor rhythm, with the sweetness of Owens' voice cutting through the intensity. Henrik Schwarz (of Berlin-based Sonar Kollektiv) builds the original into a melancholy, jazzy number which still sets the foot tapping. Tom Belton goes straight for the disco-funk hands-in-the-air jugular, before Timo Garcia hardens up the kick for a full-on club odyssey.

  3. Andrej Laseech - "Remember" (6:50)
  4. Jason Hogans - "Enough Names Already" (5:18)
Review: A few years back, the world discovered the nearly forgotten efforts of Ewan Jansen's fledgling '90s label Red Ember out of Perth, Western Australia. Jansen and label mate Justin Zerbst's underrated efforts in the pursuit of soulful deep house led to a renewed interest from a new generation - and it's quite fitting that the label's reboot serves up some fresh sounds from rookies on Deepsounds Three. South African producer Cheslon Hunter aka Markheros has an extensive digital discography thus far, but his vinyl debut was certainly worth the wait. He presents the late night deepness of "The Second Track". Likewise, Croatian producer Andrej Lasic premieres on wax too and we particularly enjoyed the emotive vibe of "Remember" calling to mind the work of Chris Gray's seminal deep4life label. Finally "Enough Names Already" sounds in order - this is a pleasant surprise from Jason Hogans. For those who don't now, he is a Detroit producer who's had releases on top labels like Planet E, Moods & Grooves and Third Ear.

  2. Moomin - "I Whisper A Prayer"
  3. Jacques Bon - "Tribute To You"
  4. Rvds & Rau - "Umbe Data"
Review: The latest transmission from the luxuriant world of Smallville is a various artists collection that continues to weave elegiac tales via deep house means. Iron Curtis is up first with some plaintive acid in the form of "Daniel", which works pads and tender beats around the heartfelt squelch with grace. Moomin is a little more prominent in the beat department for "I Whisper A Prayer", while also feeding a hint of disco romance into a slow and simmering cut. Jacques Bon has his own acid tale to tell, and does so with a bigger nod to the jack but still keeping things respectable given the surroundings, leaving it to Rvds & Rau to happily float off on a buoyant throwdown in "Umbe Data", all positive chords and hopeful strings over a simple beat to show it's not all mournful in Hamburg.

Review: From Kon's forthcoming compilation on BBE entitled Kon & The Gang, this 12? sampler features two cuts taken from the LP and an exclusive remix from Boston producer and mix engineer Caserta, namely "Timeless" (Caserta mix)" a tasty serving of super deep and low slung disco goodness. A more functional edit for DJ use follows on "Timeless" (remix - Caserta mix)". Review: Having served for eight years as one of the most dependable outlets for deep, thought provoking house in the UK, Boe Recordings recently announced its plans to shut up shop, and it does so in style. Calling on regular artists as well as fresh talent, it's a perfect swansong that demonstrates just how much quality is to be found in the Boe back catalogue. Leif's "That Ice Cream Tune" is a hypnagogic slice of broken beat, while label boss Ben Boe gets into a dreamy 2-step state of mind. That's just the tip of the iceberg on this flawless double-pack from a label that will be sorely missed.

Review: German artist Ben Rau has been amassing a fine back catalogue on two of his own labels, Inkal and Meta, since first debut on Fuse in 2011. Seth Troxler and The Black Madonna have been dropping plenty of his material in recent times and this firmly club focused new 12" is another useful weapon. "Out There" in particular is a big house track with propulsive drum programming and busy bass that will get large crowds bumping. "What Is Love" on the flip is a deeper but driving cut with spaced out pads that will be perfect for later in the night when things get more cosmic and introspective.

  3. How Are You Today
Review: Still very much in it's infancy, DJ Koze's Pampa has delivered with every release, spanning off kilter seasonal acid freakouts courtesy of Nathan Fake to the reinvigoration of Robag Wruhme. The latest release sees Chrstopher Rau step up to the plate and just like previous incumbents of a Pampa cat number the Smallville stalwart excels! Perhaps unfairly tainted with the sleep house tag in the past, Rau has already enjoyed the plaudits this year via his superlative take on "The Devils Eye" by Drake & Griffiths. Fans of that remix will delight in lead track "Pervading Animal" which smudges what sounds like a glistening Hall & Oats hook over a nicely interchangeable house bump. If the somewhat straightforward sheen of the A Side is not enough then the rougher discordant machine funk of "CFR" and the staccato bleeping rhythms of "How Are You Today" provide the requisite quirk.

Review: Having previously appeared on Roots Underground, Reekee kicks off Wrong Notes with yet more grooves that tap into the spirit of truly passionate soulful house. The aptly named Billy Love's vocals aim straight for the heart on "Love Is", with the original mix being especially moving with its lingering jazz chords, string licks and stuttering beat. The "Bluesy" mix has a more traditional deep house feel to it, while "Wurli Things" heads off into expressive Rhodes territory thanks to limber keys work from Jacopo Moschetto. For classically informed house music from the heart, look no further.

Review: Let's get one thing straight: Ravanelli Disco Club is exquisitely named. The output has proven just as tasty, too, and with Eben Rees at the buttons of this latest EP, you'll want to tuck in once more. He serves up a brace of breezy disco house tunes: opener "Bongo Boulevard" is a funk licked and perfectly carefree sort of tune you'd drop at sundown to hint at the fun to come, while "Dyfal Donc" gets more upbeat with an eco system of cosmic leads and pads dancing above well swung drums. Freerange man Jimpster provides a remix laden with wet claps and funk riffs, and Tech Support's rugged disco arps will make any floor take flight.

Shaun Reeves and Tuccillo have been doing their thing for long enough to know how to throw down a surefooted deep groover, and that's just what you get with "Smile". Review: Andrew Morgan's Peoples Potential Unlimited label may well have been founded to document the lost and forgotten funk, disco and boogie that peppered the DIY and private press labels of 1980s USA, but their contemporary releases are just as good. See 12"s from the likes of Legowelt, Beautiful Swimmers and Pender Street Steppers for evidence. Fried Chicken Skin adds to this small but deadly canon of contemporary PPU releases, presenting one of two records on the label from Stefan "Rekchampa" Ringer, a Stockbridge, Atlanta-based producer who got his break in late 2014 thanks to Kai Alce's NDATL label. "Fried Chicken Skin" is a bumping, rough US house delight replete with ad-libbing vocals from Ringer himself, whilst "Ride" sees him collaborate with Personal Trainer for a more reduced, deeper cut that will appeal to Sound Signature fans.

Review: Gunnar Wendel's Ominira label swing back into the line of sight for their first release of the year and it finds the excellent Noleian Reusse at the helm. Known for his ongoing Africans With Mainframes project alongside Jamal Moss, Reusse does possess a small but deadly solo discography for Mathematics, Love What You Feel and his own Black Tekno label. Given that this Ominira 12" is also called Black Tekno, it's evidently a concept that is close to Reusse. Across the three tracks, the US producer really shows his range, with "Venus In Scorpio" a quite dreamy opener that pairs up lazy acid lines with loose limbered drums and yearning chords. Following this, "3rd Layer" veers off into fidgeting and unpredictable 303 madness whilst "Gun Romance" strips back proceedings for a more abstract finale.

Under his birth name this will mark his second release since last year. On the A side we've got the deep, jazzy and soulful jam "Far With A Van" which kinda reminds us of those summery jams from the early noughties by Ian Pooley and St Germain. Also on offer is the sublime and ethereal with its reversed guitars semi-showgaze style, dusty beats and all round emotive elements bound to get some smiley faces on the dancefloor. On the flip an honorable mention to the dubby and hypnotic bliss of "St James" which takes it down a notch or two in great style.

"Nine To Shine" is a sweet and soulful, 90s flavoured deep house jam with catchy vocals and a bittersweet mood to help you throw off the baggage of the working life once the weekend rolls around. "Honeymoon Affair" piles on uplifting piano chords and smooth acid bass for a full-fat house burner, while "Sumthin" chops up some serious funk samples for a massive dose of feel-good. First up is Madrid's Jose Rico with a relentless, progressive bed of atmospheres that majestically opens up with vibrant synths when you least expect it. First up is the poppy "Perfect Like You", which would feel right at home on Kompakt thanks to its similarities to Superpitcher's "Joanna". On the B-side is the track "Woolloomooloo", which takes its name from a harbourside suburb in Sydney that's home to famous Australians like Russell Crowe and ex-Manchester United goal keeper Mark Bosnich. No introduction is needed for this man and what he's done for house music since the early 1990's, so we'll just go straight to the music, and see what he's onto in early 2016. The A-side is populated by "Who Are We?", a bumpy, energetic house lick with a full groove made up of layers upon layers of pads, rich melodies, and euphoric vocals - a true house beaut. On the flip, "What Does It Mean" is harder and a little deeper, but Tren't sense of music still heavily features thanks to a gorgeous line of piano keys. The good shit.

"Metronomia" is a laid back workout, but it's the bombastic funk of "So Much" that steals the show on the A-side with its crafty construction and killer bass hooks. "Education" keeps the energy levels up with some neat interplay between a bubbling, acidic bassline and soulful chord flourishes, all over a snappy 4/4 beat. "Slipping Into Darkness" is a beautifully rendered deep house gem with expressive piano work, rubbery bass synth tones, but in some ways the minimalism of Vincent Floyd's remix gives Owens' vocals a chance to take centre stage. FME Hustle is the Hamburg native's new one, where he can count Berlin urban house heroes Money $ex to his list of credentials. Under the name, London producer Archie Fairhurst first made waves with a couple of excellent 12" releases for the Black Acre label which revealed a quite distinct approach to production. Inspired by the collages of noted US artist Romare Bearden, Fairhurst's fascination with African-American culture is explored through his productions which deftly weaved in untold amounts of samples in an illuminating fashion. How Romare applies this approach to the album format is one of the most compelling thoughts you will have when listening to Projections. The resultant 11 tracks suggest Fairhurst has achieved it with aplomb.
