It has clean production but isn't overly polished. It feels deceptively simple on first listen but the keys really shine, the bass is well-defined, and the claps perfectly hip-swinging, all with a perfect soul vocal up top. Warm, candlelit and funky, it's a classic in the making. The legend that is Atjazz is the perfect man to remix this sort of stuff and he does a fine job of taking it into more dreamy and cosmic territory.

Review: Originally known for mixing up cosmic disco and indie techno, Lily & Kazan's production career has taken a turn towards classic house pastures. Their latest project, Gingerblack, is rooted in their love of house sounds of the 80s and 90s. What better way to announce it to the world, then, than by joining forces with the voice of house, Robert Owens. The honey-voiced former Larry Heard collaborator is naturally in fine form on 'Feeling That Way', a re-invention of piano-powered 90s house (complete with bubbly synth bassline, spacey chords and loose-limbed drums) with a 21st century twist. Jakob Seidensticker & MELINA provide the obligatory remix, re-imagining the track as a deep, rolling breakbeat house number with added bass pressure and sweat-soaked drum machine handclaps.

Review: The injunction to "stop apologising" can be affirming or destructive at the same time, depending on how you look at things. It's also the name of the new single from David Holmes' forthcoming album Blind On A Galloping Horse, which captures this contradiction quite nicely: a tripletting, dark electro come hi-NRG sound provides the dark underside to Raven Violet's angel-inside-your-head lyrics: "stop apologising for things you've never done / stop catastrophizing, get your feet back on the ground." The resistant, prefigurative political bent of Holmes' music is well-reflected here, striking at the heart of his personal philosophy: carve out some headroom for yourself, you don't need to take so much responsibility; such is the bedrock of effective action. Oh, and the remixes by Horse Meat Disco and Cosmodelica are wicked as well.

Review: As we roll further into the New Year we're still enjoying the arrival of plenty of new labels. Now Is Not The Time is one of them from the US that takes a bow here with its first EP, Lost In The Message. It's a three-way collab between the legendary Rahaan plus DJ Reg and Jerome O. What they do is chip up classic samples and killer grooves form the worlds of funk, soul, house and disco with 'Lost In The Message' kicking off in freewheeling fashion. 'Get Up Out Tha Water' has oems nice big horn energy and plenty of whistles and 'The M8 Track' is a deeper house sound with a belting diva vocal.

City To City: Johannesburg looks to a country that has long had its own unique and thriving deep house scene and enlists some of its best talents to offer up some fresh sounds. KaySoul's 'Icey Baby' is soulful and sensitive, SculpturedMusic's 'Midnight Talk' has deft pads shimmering over soft kicks, SizLeCaude's 'Far Apart' rides on a nice Kai Alce style bassline and the flip side offers another trio of musical and percussive late night smooches. Review: Naya Beat's modus operandi is to champion the OG sounds of the South Asian underground through the lenticular funnel of dance music. Their latest in this effort is a breakout wonder in V/A form, herding together three contemporary club titans for a jolly trans-national dialogue over the original stylings of an inimitable key player in proliferation of Bhangra music, Manjeet Kondal. The late great Kondal hears one original piece, 'Pyaar', reissued, alongside two exclusive versions of 'Ishkaan De Mamle' by digger extraordinaire Mr. Scruff, followed by a closing, straight-from-the-stems downtempo acid dub tribute by modern day remixers and DJs Turbotito & Ragz. This is an honorific tribute to the crossection of late 80s to early 90s Bhangra music with acid house, carefully modelled after the aesthetic sensibilities of the time.

Review: Fresh from delivering the excellent El U Vee EP, Make a Dance welcome North-East titan Geoff Kirkwood AKA Man Power to M.A.D Records for the first time. This time round, Kirkwood has company: Kenyan singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rapasa Nyatrapasa. The pair set their stall out on opener 'Lou Land', where Nyatrapasa's Kenyan vocals and percussion slowly rise above a deep, drowsy and trippy deep house groove, before opting for an Amapiano-influenced Afro-tech-meets-Afro-House vibe on the more electronic 'Battle Hill'. Make a Dance deliver two takes on the latter on side B: a proto-house style vocal 'Remix' rich in vintage synth sounds, undulating acid bass, drum machine fills and echo-laden drum hits and a 'Dub Mix' that re-invents the track as a hazy, immersive slab of dub house/deep house fusion.

The high energy house party sound kicks off with Nolan who features the legendary house voice of Sir. Robert Owens. Hilit Kolet isn't shy with the extended remix of 'POV Siren'. Review: Radio Slave making a record in tribute to the late, great Terry Hall was not on our bingo card for 2024, but the resultant workout - based on the much-loved vocal hook from 1981 workout 'The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum' - is both undeniably dancefloor-ready and fittingly forthright (the original song was, of course, a scathing commentary on Thatcher-era Britain). The EP-opening 'Club Mix' places at the vocal refrain at the heart of the action, surrounding it with hazy vocalisations, thunderous bass, heavyweight tech-house drums and horn sounds that offer knowing nods to the classic 2 Tone sound. The accompanying 'A Clinic Full of Cynics Dub' leans into the ska sound of the original more, placing echoing horns and steel pan sounds atop a deep, dubby bassline and unfussy house beats.

Review: Radio Slave's most recent single, the trippy, string-laden and subtly disco-influenced deep house after-party workout 'Wake Up', gets the remix treatment, with two artists renowned for delivering delightfully wayward dancefloor epics at the helm. Kompakt favourites Superpitcher steps up first, placing the original's oddball (sampled) spoken word vocal atop a hypnotic, subtly changing bed of acid motifs, warming chords, hypnotic house drums and delay-laden Rhodes chords. Review: Newcastle-based Hot Biscuit Recordings unleashes a new offshoot, Typewriter Record Pool, with main label regular Rahaan at the controls. A-side 'Wind' sees the Chicagoan digger, DJ and scalpel fiend take on Christopher Cross's 1980 classic 'Ride Like The Wind', the soft rock legend's dalliance with synth-sporting AOR disco, extending it in all the right places while giving the track a slightly more floor-focused spin. Over on the reverse, 'Baby Baby Please' sees Rahaan stick a Windy City disco rocket under Thelma Houston's frequently overlooked, Clavinet-heavy cover of Philadelphia International favourite 'Don't Leave Me This Way'. Review: After an outstanding debut on M.A.D Records earlier this year, Rakim Under is back with the first instalment of his edits series, 'Rakim Redun Vol.1'. Comprised of five edits set to move any dancefloor, these are soft-edged and playful knockers of the cut-up variety, with each of the five edits nodding to everything from medley-style breaks resampleage to early acid house subjections. Notable is Under's edit of 'House Teachin'', the original of which we can't track down, whereas the remix of which is stellar as it is robotically spoken-n'-spelled. Then come the increasingly celestial and piano-packed moods, most notable among which has to be, undendiably, the version of 'Celestial Ocean'. We bask and float in it gladly.

Review: Ben Hixon has steadily released house gem after house gem on his Dolfin imprint. The label in just a little over eight years has created quite a robust discography with no signs of letting up. The newest 'Work', almost goes without saying that it reminds of us classic Chi-Town tracks from the heyday. But as the track moves on, you quickly forget the comparison as those beautiful keys play and the atmosphere sets in. Both 'Work' and 'Movedat' feature vocals from Rami who is co-credited on this wax. 'Movedat' is a bit more a minimal house banger but still is full of soul. Both tracks are strong winners and are sure to get a big response from patrons of the dancefloor. This 7" is limited to only 200 copies so grab one quickly!

Review: One of Italy's premier deep house labels, MoBlack is back with their ninth volume of their gold series. This edition features four different producers that each take their turn pushing boundaries within the sound of their culture. Rancido & AfroTura & Bun Xapa's 'Kibe' has a driving beat to it with a strong vocal performance by Aziz. This track sets the tone for the album. Frankie Lluc's 'Burlan' is deep and tribal, riding an organic free flowing tech house to great success. For the second side, Klement Bonelli presents 'Pesna', a unique euro house sound rooted in early Italian disco. We can't help but think it reminds us of 'Rhythm is Dancer' by Snap. Fahlberg's 'The Light' ends things on an uplifting note with a dreamy piano builder that delivers. We think this is a great example of different regional producers making house music.

Now, Phonogramme adds this talented producer to their impressive roster. The Blade EP showcases Rau's amazing talents at making great sounding electronic music. The production is clean, polished and catchy. 'Alfred' is a deep house gem that hits all your senses - a track you can play day or night. The title track, meanwhile, has all the makings of a Detroit masterpiece that reminds us of works by Ian O'Brien, Envoy or Dan Curtin. Review: Mike Grant's Moods & Groves is one of Detroit's strongest deep house torchbearers and it has been for years. Raybone Jones has also been turning out the tunes for years but has kept a low-key profile while doing so. It's been a decade since his last outing on this label but that time hasn't diminished his skills: 'Detroit Driven (feat Bill Beaver)' is a dusty and ramshackle opening groove to get you in the mood and 'The Part We Dance' then layers up loopy broken beats and roughshod percussion with wispy pads that bring a future feel. 'Far From Over' brings some diffuse synth soul and jumbled percussive funk to another lush deep house excursion.

Review: Rayko is back with a much anticipated second volume of the Vadillo Vice series on Rare Wiri and again it is timeless disco and house for fans of the likes of Tiger & Woods. 'Rain' is slow and rugged with fleshy arps and tinny percussion before an iconic via sample lights up the groove. 'Mercy' is another unhurried but soul drenched sound with low slung drums and claps and airy pads up top. 'Gold Dust Woman' ups the ante a little with extra pace but no less emotion and heartfelt vocals while 'Amigo' closes down with a lovely Spanish twist.

Review: The Rayonas label hits drop number five here with the eponymous production team taking care of a tidy pink vinyl. It offers up some fresh deep house explorations starting with 'Walking Through Clouds' which is ice cold and superbly compelling - the drum loops are tight and tidy, the synth motifs hook and the bass warm. 'Sneakin' has a more playful mood as it plays with some recognisable chords that funk up the sleek drum work. 'P1' keeps the vibes flowing with more irresistibly danceable house music and 'Shot' then brings more slapping percussive sounds and hip-hop samples that make for late night fun.

Review: Ricky Razu shows his class on this rich new EP which is deep house infused with proper musicality, sensor vibes and late-night romance. Opener 'Got Me Trippin'' is delightful with its dusty, low-slung beats and jazzy chords next to perfect r&b vocal hook. 'Back In Time' is another low-key deep house shuffler but with starry keys and catchy rhythms and 'Be There' brings some more perfect combinations of aching vocals, expert chord work and cuddly drums that gently move you along. 'Deep Blue' might be the best of the lot with its cascading and summery keys.

Review: Retromigration's Cloudin is a deep house 12" that offers a great blend of fun, jazzy, and serious tracks. Sometimes, all in the same track. It opens with the title track, which is a proper deep house effort that is techy and fresh, with tribal and psychedelic elements. This is followed by 'Only Well,' which is a jazzy funk track with a nice melody. The third track, 'Just Take It,' is a catchy, slick house track with an addictive melody and hints of disco. Side 2 of the album opens with 'They Hatin',' an urban groove track with cool sound effects, an old skool jazz feel and a 70s sound. The album closes with 'You Win,' a clever, different and unique track. Overall, Cloudin is a great 12" that shows that house music can be much more than just an evolution of disco.

Review: This top-drawer reissue digs into the vaults of the legendary UMM Records label. It comes from 1992 and is an impassioned, steamy deep house by Rhythm 3 Request aka Carlo Montagner, Gibo Rosin, Maurizio Sacchi and Paolo Verlanzi. They released just three EPs, all within about a year of each other, but this one has more than withstood the test of time. 'Desafinado' comes in several forms with an After Hours mix laced with lush chords, the Hastenia have more drive but no less romance to it and the Red Zone is only a subtle tweak before Tribal Tracks gets more trippy.

Review: The sixth edition of the Luther Vine-curated Fragments Of Reality offers up four new workouts bulging with urgency and style. Upfront and upbeat disco house from Rhythms of Prescott opens the collection like a volcanic eruption, 'Three One Two' being the work of Irish-born, London-based Wizkid, definitely a name to watch out for. 'Dress 2 Sweat' by Aguila follows, with 90s-inspired filtered vocal samples gliding on top of a warm, sun-kissed bassline. Flip it over for 'Delayed Fizz' by Douwe and Picasso with its chiselled grooves and urbanesque electro twists, while the brassy, cheeky 'Unintended Consequences' by Tom Frankel completes the set in style.

Review: There is a ton of excellent disco edits dropping right now, and whether that is a fluke or because we all love to hear some big and life-affirming sounds when it comes to the Christmas party season we cannot be sure. This 12" from Ri Edito is a second volume from the in-house production team and it's a steamy one. 'Al Dancing' is full of sensuous whispered vocals and yacht rock cool, then 'Imprevedibile' rides another sunny beat with soaring strings. 'La Rosa' then keeps it funky and lavish thanks to more synth strings and gentle keys. 'Vaiaccaga' closes out with a weird vocal that is heavily filtered and sounds multi-lingual.

Review: Having laid the groundwork with a few digital releases over the past few years, Spanish label TBX get going in earnest with a strong various artists 12" featuring emergent talent and established legends alike. Rich NxT is up first with 'Bluefunk' - a widescreen production with a powerful arrangement which moves between deft broken beat programming and snappy 4/4 with an emphasis on cinematic scene setting. Perky Wires equally embraces funky rhythms and rich synth composition as well as instinctive groove, while Politics Of Dancing steps up with some of that trademark minimal tech house he's so well known for. Djebali rounds off the B-side with 'Matmata', a typically elegant workout from the French mainstay.

Review: Ethos is a brand new label from Athens that follows up its notable debut with another classy deep house offering from Jose Rico, who has long been synonymous with such things. 'Dubplates' opens up with slow, patient, warming dub house that is lo-fi and coated in misty pads. 'New Life Galactica' is another richly atmospheric deep house sound with muted acid lines and humid chords while 'Fade Out' gets a little more driving with a jumble of woody hits and golden soft focus chords. 'Future World Dreamoon' shuts down with fine broken beats and jazzy synth work for cultured and cosy backrooms.

Review: Riordan doesn't muck about with this one as they head to the heart of the dancefloor with a brand new and full-throttle tech house cut on Realm. 'Needle On the Record' in its original format is a bumping cut with potent kick drum programming, chopped-up vocal stabs and smeared synths that bring a twisted future feel. The Fleur Shore remix has a chunky, tribal, percussive feel for those sweaty Ibiza parties.
