Review: We'll never tire of the incredible Brazil45 series on Mr Bongo, which has provided an authoritative window into the rich history of 60s and 70s grooves from South America. Here's a missing joint from the series which took some time to come to fruition - a split release featuring Brazilian Boys on the A side and Rubinho E Mauro Assumpcao on the B. 'Super Herois' is an obscure slice of off-kilter, psych tinged funk from 1975 that has the kind of individual sound which could find favour with a lot of different DJs. 'Tudo Ai' has a more recognisable samba shuffle, but much like the A side there's a subtle twist in the sound which leans towards blues rock and jazz, locking down on the rhythm and creating a low-key party starter in its own unique way.

Featuring mostly British and American artists the label now widens its net to serve up a pair of high impact tunes from their well-received Ciao Bella! Italian Girl Singers Of The 1960s compilation CD. Brunetta's 'Baluba Shake' has big and cavernous drums, plucked guitar riffs and rollicking great chords next to lung-busting vocals. It's a real dancer. Things get more impassioned on the high speed funk chase that is Rita Pavone's 'Il Geghege.'

Review: The Roots Unity label is in a real purple patch right now and has multiple 7"s dropping in quick succession. The one here is part of a slew of four drops from the Dutch label and it features esteemed roots talent, Bunnington Judah, with the in-house production team. 'Jah Children Must Rise' is organic island music with wooden, tumbling percussion and natty chords. The drums have fleshy bass and plenty of swagger next to the hypnotic flute leads. The vocals from Judah are the impassioned icing on the delicious cake. Flip it over and as always the Roots Unity crew serve up a bottomlessly deep dub version.

Review: Denzel Curry and GRAMMY nominated contemporary jazz great Robert Glasper performed a special live show in the Leimert Park neighbourhood of Los Angeles back in autumn of 2020. This special 7" picture disc features live audio of that set as part of this year's Record Store Day celebrations. 'So Incredible Pkg' is has swirling synth lines drifting up into the air , with wooden percussion and gentle beats accompanying Curry's confrontational vocal work. He is just as amped up while performing over the more laid back and deep cut 'This Changes Everything.'

Review: Eric B & Rakim remain two of hip hop's most love characters. Their wordplay and beat making was second to none back inter prime and has barely been bettered since. For that reason reissue slick this will always be in hot demand. Review: Fleet Foxes & Resistance Revival Chorus performed 'Can I Believe You' on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert before this two-track release made its way to us. If that sounds like a pretty cheap way to record a single fear not, the pre-recorded footage juxtaposed the band's frontman, Robin Pecknold, singing alone with the clips of him and full band, joined by the Chorus, in St. Ann and the Holy Trinity Church, Brooklyn, New York. And it's the latter segments that have made their way onto this release.
As you can imagine, then, there's a very full sound at play here, with the title number growing into a grand piece of rolling, anthem folk indie. By comparison, 'Wading In Waist-High Water' brings the focus onto the Chorus rather than the group and removes the traditional chart structure, leaving us with a beautiful choir piece that's the strongest of the pair here.

Review: This Japanese import on Vortex Records offers a brilliant disco-reggae version of a classic tune by Dean Fraser & Robert "Dubwise" Browne. 'Mister Magic' is a mid-paced chugger with oodles of reverb and bass so funky it will tie you in knots. The acoustic guitar melodies are warm and slide up and down the scale and big horns add flesh and fun. On the flip it is dubbed out to the max, with endless hissing hi-hat tails and mind-melting bass but the same sense of playful and bubbling funk. A real scorcher for sure.

The A side lends a wonky future house feel (a-la GoldLink, Crackazat) to '52 North', Gallowstreet's ode to the city of Amsterdam. Review: Dennis Brown's 'Love Has Found Its Way' is the subject of this super cover version on Vortex out of Japan. It is Maya Hatch and Robert Dubwise Brownie who are behind it and they bring lush lovers rock vibes and rolling reggae to their unique interpretation. Hayassen is the producer and the a-side version is awash with island chords that ring out over a clam sea and sundown. The fleshy bass and wiggling percussion ensure some nice dancing vibes next to the romantic vocals and the dub side on the flip closes out this crucial import in style.

Review: Dave Welding's Soul Junction has another great package here from The Hill District. This was a group of working musicians that was initially assembled by bassist Walter "Sonny" Hughes who was impressed with them after seeing them rehearse one afternoon. They only ever managed to record one 45, however, and it is this one, and it has overmuch remained hard to find over the years. Hill District's 'You're Scared Of Falling In Love' is glorious sunny and carefree soul with gentle rhythms and great vocal work. Richie Merrett then steps up on the flip with 'You'll Always Have Yesterday Standing By' which is much more verily sentimental and pained.

Review: One of the many musical golden moments Joyce has given us during her 20 album/40 year career, "Aldeia de Ogum" is a full-bodied samba smash that enjoyed a renaissance during London's acid jazz era in the late 80s. Review: Batov Records have proven themselves juggernauts in their ability to stick to a theme; since 2016, they've kept up their Middle-Eastern grooves themed 45's series for a spate of over 13 releases. Les Dynamites and Radio Trip serve up their latest. Hailing from Jerusalem and Israel respectively, both bring influences from dubbed-out Mediterranean bass, Yemeni folk and trip-hop to each tracks, different in style but reconciled by these influences. What's more 'Oud Two' and 'No Oud' are intended as invitations to dance, with both bands intending their respective tracks as rallying calls for Israeli belly dancers and breakdancers.

It is he who is behind this latest 7" alongside Rude Audio. 'This Song's For You' (feat Findlay Brown) is fusion of indie, cold wave and synth with dreamy vocals drifting over typically lush chords and silky drums from Norris. The typically languid, weighty and dub flecked cut is built around a tweaked, replayed version of Coxsone Dodd's legendary 'He Prayed' riddim (a groove that has been used on countless reggae records before and since). Osbourne's lead vocal is typically relaxed and quietly soulful, while the involvement of Scientist on mixing desk duties guarantees more bass-weight and subtle dub inflections than your average roots number. Back then it was actually put out as a blank label and was mistakenly credited to The Bleachers, ratter than The Race Fans who actually wrote it. On the B-side is a totally different tune, 'Bookie Man,' which is a gem in its own right. A rare sound and killer groove, it's a great yin to the yang of the a-side and this is the first time both of these have been pressed up together at the same time.

Again here it digs into the vast annals of hip-hop history to come up with some still relevant gems in the form of Rakim and DJ Premier's staple 'It's Been a Long Time.' It is a classic boom-bap joint with lush strings and horns, some old-school scratching and cool bars. As walls, the label serves it up alongside the original sample source on the flip which is Cecil Holmes's languid soul slow burner 'Call Me, Come Back Home'. Review: This clear vinyl "45" dips into the small but perfectly formed mid '90s catalogue of Oakland duo Rappin' Ron and Ant Diddly Dog, whose take on gangsta rap was more laidback and melodfious than some of their contemporaries. 'All Rapped Up', which first surfaced as the pair's debut single in 1994, combines a luscious, laidback, jazz-funk-sampling boom-bap beat with typically descriptive, entertaining lyrics detailing life on the streets of the pair's home city. Over on the reverse you'll find original flipside 'Smoke Season', here presented in extended form. Lyrically it covers similar territory, but musically it's an unashamed G-funk workout full of rubbery bass, smooth synths and P-funk influenced motifs.

Review: If you love your disco sweet, soulful and string-drenched, you really need a copy of Rare Pleasure's 1976 debut single, 'Let Me Down Easy', in your life. This reissue from South Street Disco is therefore essential to all those who've not snagged an original copy. It features both the seven-inch and 12-inch mixes (A and B respectively); both feature deliciously emotional female lead vocals, a killer disco groove, wah-wah style funk guitar licks, sumptuous instrumentation and a jangling piano riff that was later used by David Morales on his '90s house anthem 'Needin' U'. Ras Ico & The Shades are in charge and showcase their authentic reggae sound which owes a lot to the classic sound of Jamaican. While there's something undeniably alluring about the more suspenseful B-side, 'Space Break' - where effects-laden electric guitar licks and alien-sounding synths rise above a metronomic bassline and a relaxed funk break - it's the more up-tempo A-side, 'Stardust Break', that's the real winner. Review: Reflex was a band assembled in the 1980s by drummer David Humphrey from bands including Public Image Ltd. and they put pout their biggest hit 'Funny Situation' privately via Star Records in 1981. Paint A Picture now serve up a first ever fully remastered and licensed reissue of the superb 7". An original will cost you upwards of L200 if you can find it so this is welcome indeed. The record includes an insert with some content on the release, which was made in the same studio and engineered by the same man as the classic Britfunk anthem 'Southern Freeze.' It is similarly tight and funky and will make any floor go off.

Review: Reggie Soul And The Soul Swingers dropped their soul classic 'My World Of Ecstasy' back in 1969 on the Capri Records label. It is a cult and highly sought-after gem even all these decades later and there is currently just one second hand copy to be found and it will cost you almost four figures to own. Or you could buy this reissue on Soul Junction which is also backed with the raw and guttural 'Might Good Loving'. It hits hard, at high speed, with frantic drums and horns. 'My World Of Ecstasy' meanwhile is more sedate, with fluttery jazz melodies and gentle drums, great harmonies and a smoky lead.

Review: Although the Australian outfit Regime roots are in revivalist funk, 'Never Gonna Stop' sees them turn their hands to warm, loved-up and sun-kissed soul of the kind that was once all the rage in the mid 1970s. The grooves are toasty, the male and female lead vocals effortlessly soulful, and the instrumental touches - think languid jazz guitar solos, sweeping strings and lazy, trumpet-heavy horn arrangements - little less than superb. Flipside 'Deuzy Vibe', a P-funk flavoured, turn-of-the-80s boogie-soul style affair, is almost as good. There aren't that many of these -vinyl 45s around, so buy now to avoid disappointment.

Review: Renaldo Domino has nothing to do with the pizza chain, of course - in fact, he was so named because his voice was sweet as sugar (Domino is an American sugar brand, if you didn't know.) He had a very short but sweet - pun intended - a career that saw him drop tunes on Mercury subsidiaries Smash and Blue Rock, and later Twinight records. They managed to make an impact and for that reason, he was inspired to get back to making new music in 2019. 'I'm Hip To Your Game' was his first single and one that was soon re-recorded for a second release - it's deep and warm with lavish strings where the A-side has a swinging Northern Soul vibe.

Review: With their second bit of splendid new music, The Revues once again explore the areas where Tejano music, Latin soul and funk all intersect. Review: Versatile's new Uprooted project, masterminded by serial curator and long-time label contributor Vidal Benjamin, has an intriguing concept. It focuses on the 'duality' of musicians who grow up in one place, then move to another and absorb that culture. The two tracks on release number one were picked by Vladimir Ikovic, who has selected a track a piece from Belgrade, the city of his birth, and Dusseldorf, his current home. On the Serbian side, he offers up 'Track 1' by Rex Ilusivii, Goran Vejvoda and Milan Mladenovic, a trippy, slow-motion slab of dubbed-out, Eno-influenced slab of post-punk experimentalism from 1984. Flip for some rough, powerful, mind-mangling proto-techno from 1981: the stylish, lo-fi and pleasingly intense 'NBKE' by CHBB. Inspired obscurities that are well worth a listen.

Review: Rhyze was a legendary New York based funk, soul and R&B band and they put out a classic album Just How Sweet Is Your Love on the SAM Records label back in the 80s. One of the little known but killer cuts from it is 'Do Your Dance.' It has driving horns over driving drums, with a slick bassline weaving in and out from front to back. The buttery vocal chants are simply irresistible, too. On the flip is the more peak time, floor filling bit of dynamite 'Free' with its irrepressible horns and clipped, kinetic drums.

Review: Ricardo Bomba was not only a studio owner, engineer, pianist and composer, but so too was he an accomplished amateur skateboarder. He lay down these previously unreleased, sun soaked Brazilian tunes in 1978 after years as bandleader with the one and only Jorge Ben's live show. The master tapes were said to have been binned during a heavy studio clear out but the man himself kept a tape copy that has been remastered for this special 7". Mariana Couto provides the angelic vocals while the music all trills with joy and happiness.

Review: If you're a dusty-fingered disco digger with a fondness for intergalactic-themed, over-the-top brilliance, you may well already be aware of Love in Space, the sole, sought-after album from Rene Riche & Her Cosmic Band. Arguably the album's best moment is the driving, soaring, camp-as-Christmas title track, which here gets re-edited and remixed. T-Groove wisely sticks closely to the original on the A-side re-edit, retaining Riche and company's vocals while extending and rearranging some of the track's sublime instrumental sections. In contrast, the flipside U Key Monday dub mix craftily re-casts the track as a bouncy, delay-laden slab of disco-house hedonism full of rubbery slap bass, descending strings and boisterous Clavinet stabs.

Review: Glenn Ricks was originally part of The Fabulous Flames having met the band in Canada, where he had emigrated to from Jamaica as a child. His stagecraft and musical skill impressed them from the off and he moved back to Jamaica where they record some huge tunes before splitting. That is when Glenn embarked on his solo career and become ever more well known for his soulful style and lush roots and lovers rock sound. 'Time' is a 45 that feature two new cuts. 'Time' is all laidback and earth, with acoustic guitars and muddied drums, then 'Woman' is more loved up and romantic.

Review: Carrie Riley & The Fascinations are one of those mythologised outfits who released only one single, but who really nailed that one single. The year of origin is unknown but now the Symphonical Records label that is dedicated to reviving and releasing unissued cuts from often forgotten artists of colour now puts it back on the map. 'Super Cool' is indeed ice cold. The sultry trumpets and low slung bass roll deep and the heart aching vocal is soul perfection. On the flip is the delightfully tender and vulnerable 'Living In A Lonesome House Without You' with its soft vocals and softer grooves.

The legendary 79s band migrated from the Mid-West to Atlanta and soon hit the big time with their debut single. Two cuts that were never released at the time are now presented here - the lush falsetto of Maybe It's You' with all its jazzy soul. Review: Athens Of The North has never been shy in putting out music. The label is always working on a wealth of different projects it seems and this month drops a couple of very tasty - as per usual - 7"s. Rivage was a leading band in the 70s modern soul scene and one long loved by the Athens label head. He put out a first-ever reissue of their Sit-in On It LP last year and now serves up some of the singles from it, namely the flute-led joy of 'Strung Out On Your Love' and 'All My Love For You,' a comforting soul tune with swirling grooves and classic falsetto vocals. Lovely stuff.

Review: Limited white vinyl repress.DJ Soopasoul's last mash-up was an inspired affair that saw him perfectly fuse tracks by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB and the Beastie Boys. Here he takes a similar approach, placing the rap vocals from the 1995 hip-hop classic 'How High' atop a suitably funky, lolloping beat crafted from clavinet-heavy sections from Stevie's party-starting floor-heater 'Superstition'. It works remarkably well on the A-side vocal mix, and those who'd not heard either track would be convinced that there was no mash-up antics going on. Over on side B you'll find an instrumental mix that showcases Soopasoul's editing skills; minus the vocals, is a fine re-edit of the Wonder-ful jam.

Review: Through his solo releases and work with Leon Ware, Richard Evans and Skip Scarborough, Rockie Robbins became one of American soul's most celebrated artists and producers in the early 1980s. This year's he's set to release his first album of note since 1985, with these two cuts offering a taste of what's to come. Interestingly, "Good Life" sounds a little like it could have been written and produced in the 1980s, even if the mixing, mastering and lilt in Robbins' voice reflect its contemporary status. Either way, it's warm, positive and comes blessed with a wonderfully strong chorus. "Let's Groove", meanwhile, is a little deeper and more loved-up, perfectly reflecting that side of Robbins' 1980s output.

Review: 80s soul jazz sensation and keyboardist Judy Roberts debut with her The Other World album and went on to out another nine full length. The first remained her best, though, and two tunes from it make up this hot new 7" on Dynamite. It's the title track that goes first and is an uplifting and life-affirming soul-jazz jam with busy drumming, hectic chord work and a fantastic lead guitar that brings the Balearic vibes. Things slow down on the flip with the more sentimental and noodling jazz-funk bass and laidback grooves of 'The River Must Flow.'

Review: 'Cuss Cuss' comes all the way from 1960 and is the most celebrated and well known tune from the man born Lloyd Altamont Thomas Robinson. He was a dancehall don who died a decade ago but not before releasing some 50 odd singles and EPs. 'Cuss Cuss' is devastatingly short and deals - a dark vibe pervades the deeply burrowed bass and the vocals are the sound of him making a plea for bad vibes to leave his life. On the flip side here is a version that is more lo-fi, stripped back and deep - as if playing from the room next door, almost.

Review: Vocalist and poet Roger Robinson has connected with Jabu producer Amos for this new single which finds them explore new grounds. After their fuzzy lovers rock outing last time out, here they head off into space with more cosmic and zoned out sounds full of intimate and slo mo grooves. 'Summer' goes first and is a blissed out cut with ambient pads and lonely piano keys encouraging you to get lost in deep thought. 'Feel Bad Smile' is even more of a cosy late night cuddle, with spoken word mutterings and lingering notes breaking your heart each and every time.
