Armchair Analyst/Long Overdue (limited 180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: MOSAIC LTDX2. Rel: 03 Dec 18
Techno
  1. Bluetrain - "Armchair Analyst" (Special edition dub) (7:49)
  2. Roger Gerressen - "Long Overdue" (7:12)
Review: Steve O'Sullivan's Mosaic train keeps on rolling, this time via the LTDX series which reaches its second station stop with two more dubbed out dancefloor delights for the deepest divers. O'Sullivan dons his Bluetrain guise to deliver the UK steppers-indebted "Armchair Analyst," which artfully folds subtle dubwise influences into its minimal techno construction. On the flip side, Roger Gerressen spaces things out good and proper with the slow-stalking groove of "Long Overdue," fusing the best elements of contemporary minimal and classic dub to create a fine extension of the Rhythm & Sound blueprint.

Review: In Celebration of 10 years of Modularz We present a very special 40th vinyl release, focusing more on the deeper side of the label pushing a more melodic and chord progressive sound. Written and produced by label head Developer, Ukrainian producer Rhomb and new comers Astronomical Telegram from Colombia and Heretic from the UK. Together compile a great compilation that will destroy floors for years to come.

Ring Center (hand-stamped 12'')
Cat: EXT 004. Rel: 18 Sep 19
Techno
  1. DJ Gonzo & Dr Yes - "Ring Center" (6:17)
  2. Rough Thought - "Puneto" (6:44)
Review: No-nonsense German label EXT has gone back to basics here, delivering their first split-artist EP since 2016. DJ Gonzo and Dr Yes handle side A, unfurling a tactile but wonky techno jack-track ("Ring Center") full of jaunty, all action synth-bass, bleeping computer electronics, fluttering synth riffs and clanking drum machine beats that doff a cap to both Chicago jack and Motor City futurism. Rough Thought takes over on side B, charging through a bustling combination of rising and falling intergalactic synth lines, deep space chords, surging arpeggio bass and a drum track so sweaty that it could have been laid down by a drummer who has just downed four cans of the world's most repulsive energy drink.

Electro
  1. One Ten (6:12)
  2. One Twenty (4:12)
  3. One Thirty (5:21)
  4. One Forty (5:23)
Review: Roza Terenzi has had a head-spinning past 12 months, notching up a wave of high grade electro releases on labels like Oscillate Tracks, Butter Sessions and Dekmantel. Now she's debuting the Gloworm alias on start up concern Sides, and sounding as vital as ever as she delves into deviant jack tracks dripping with tripped out FX processing. "One Ten" has a slow and nasty acid vibe to it, with a groove that rolls with ease and wobble bass wielded to perfection. "One Twenty" has a more brittle electro bent to it, while "One Thirty" pumps things up to a more peak time flavour of machine funk. As you might have guessed by now, "One Forty" takes things even higher til you're flying at ghettotech levels - Terenzi sounds utterly on point so select with confidence, whichever tempo you need to reach for.

  5. Oyvind Morken & Kaman Leung - "Tunnel Visjon" (5:31)
  6. Acidboychair - "The End (At Any Speed)" (4:48)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Gravity Graffiti has been doing great things with its series of split 12"s already, but now the Italian label goes one better for its tenth release with this mighty double pack of heavy hitters. First up is the ever-untouchable Yoshinori Hayashi, who gets as straight up as he possibly could with the freaky house burner "Dissociative." Telephones is feeling particularly dubbed out and groovy on "Kalimbalimbo", while DB.Source and Riccardo Schiro take things strung out and textural on "Montevago". Dynamo Dreesen is in rave mode for the pepped up and delightfully weird "Reactivate", leaving the final side to Oyvind Morken & Kaman Leung's chugging "Tunnel Visjon" and the rubbery side swipes of Acidboychair's "The End (At Any Speed)".

  4. Bal5000 - "Kids" (7:26)
Review: (Emotional) Especial heralds its 30th release with a killer package from an all-star cast that takes in label regulars and newcomers alike. The vibe starts heated and heavy with modern acid champ Roy Of The Ravers taking a blunt instrument or two to Junior Fairplay's "End Of Love," firing off the kind of bludgeoning b-line and fizzing drums that makes his direct approach to the dancefloor so potent. It's somewhat surprising to see Freeform Five pop up on this 12", but Jamie Paton's remix of "Throwing Stones" sounds utterly natural in the habitat - a brooding, simmering trip shot through with noirish synths. Kris Baha gets busy with Red Axes' "Waiting For A Surprise," twisting out an exotic bubbler perfect for the low tempo chugging crowd, and then Bal5000 wraps things up with the gorgeous electro-disco delights of "Kids".

  1. Manifesto (5:57)
  2. Don't Leave (6:07)
  3. Clouds (5:05)
Review: Berlin-based DJ and producer Denise Rabe has become something of a cult heroine since her first releases in 2015. The years since have found her operate in her own parallel techno world, where psychoactive sounds and heavy drones permeate your ears, then your brain, then your whole being. Now she steps away from her own Rabe label for a debut on Stroboscopic Artefacts, which finds her take charge of the Totem series. Opener "Manifesto" is a driving techno groover with ghoulish synth designs and keys from the 5th dimension, then "Don't Leave" will utterly trip you out with its panning pads and mysterious leads. "Clouds" completes the journey with doom laden and wide spread kick drums that lurch over and over through some ruined post-human world. Tip!

Review: REPRESS ALERT: After two solo releases on Lovefinger's ESP Insitute, and two more 12" as Greenvision (his collaborative project with Trent) Juan Ramos graces Berlin's Cocktail d'Amore Music with a new outstanding EP.A'Incorporeality' and 'Liquid Sky Drone' are both vibrant, hallucinating, trance inducing tracks. Full-on sonic layering and unexpected drum patterns compose these two bangers. Multidimensional is the right term to describe Ramos' music. His futuristic approach, yet full of references from the past, is gaining a strong reputation within the contemporary electronic scene.AMelbourne-Berlin based Kris Baha is on remix duties. 'Liquid Sky Drone' becomes an industrial ballad - cinematic and romantic, at the same time bouncing and synthetic.AArtwork by Boldtron, virtual reality artist based in Barcelona.

  1. Centrifuge (9:46)
  2. Relic Reworked (5:39)
Review: Random XS was founded in 1991, when DJ Zero One (Sander Friedeman) joined forces with Arno Peeters to perform live at a small underground party in Utrecht before the latter left three years later and was replaced by Frank de Groodt. After the long awaited re-release of their 1992 Djax-Up-Beats classic "Give Your Body" last year on Delsin, they return with a pair of unreleased jams for fellow Dutch imprint MOS Recordings. Both tracks are said to be recorded in the early '90s, but reworked and remastered for "heavy club impact". On the A side is some proper minimal mentalism on the frantic and tunnel vision "Centrifuge", followed by the sublime 303 wizardry of "Relic Reworked" on the flip, which hails "all aboard the acid express!" better than any other.

Review: 2019 is proving to be a busy year for French deep techno producer Erell Ranson. With the Artificial Paradise 12" freshly dropped on Distant Worlds, he also steps up to Subconscious Algorithms to join Derek Carr and Norken in exploring genuinely interesting avenues of machine soul. There's an electro flavour to "Sensitive Person", and a subtle house pulse to "Who You Are & Who You Want To Be," while "Unthinkable Destiny" snaps with a sharply rendered rhythm underneath illustrious synth shapes. "Nothing To Do With Me" finishes the EP in a consistent style, making this a complete package with four refined jams for those who like their techno to hit in the solar plexus.

Review: Erell Ranson has got some serious credentials behind him. The French producer has been releasing music for over ten years, landing on a range of underground labels that more recently include Barba Records, Subwax Excursions and Nightflight. On this release for UK label Distant Worlds, he matches the vibe of label mates John Shima, Derek Carr et al with a gorgeous set of emotive, yearning techno reflections that call to mind the early UK scene pioneered by B12, Baby Ford and others. This is thoughtful, heartfelt stuff that works both as distinctive dancefloor material as well as intimate home listening fare.
