  3. Aye-Le (Rough World) (Unity mix) (5:46)
Review: ** REPRESS ALERT ** A Pal Joey classic originally released back in 1991 on his Cabaret imprint gets a much needed reissue here from the original masters. The New York City house pioneer's only recording under the Roots Foundation alias, it features vocalist Ola Salanke on three different mixes of "Aye-Le" (Rough World). While the Love mix is a zeitgeist of early '90s house with strong Afro influences, the Peace mix injects lovely polyrhythms to hypnotic effect while the Unity mix on the flip is more straight-ahead for effectiveness on the dancefloor.

  3. Morning Sequence (Mark E remix)
Review: After a bit of a hiatus, Roots Unit return with some deep house hybrids from their bulging vaults. "Learn To Love" is a melodic dub-house / techno infused big sound system warmer that comes from a studio session with former 2 Lone Swordsman Keith Tenniswood and will be familiar to those who tune into Tim Sweeney's Beats In Space show on the regular. "Morning Sequence" is a lovely early morning hypnotic slinky electronic house jam that gets under your skin and into your mind. This latter track is mutated into a heavy floor filler by Mark E in full on peak time mode.

  1. Epiphany (5:23)
  2. The Revolution (6:18)
  3. Phantom Ratio (6:18)
Review: 1990s sitcom loving beat maker Felix Weatherall returns to Brainfeeder for the first time since the release of his widely acclaimed debut album as Ross From Friends, 2018's "Family Portrait". He's in fine form from the off, with title track "Epiphany" offering a wonderfully intoxicated, off-kilter blend of bustling drum machine breakbeats, hallucinatory electronics, Middle Eastern style instrumentation and razor-sharp bass. He continues on an inventive fusion trip in the form of "The Revolution", where cut-up vocal samples and bluesy guitar lines rise and fall above a densely percussive deep house groove. Also impressive is "Phantom Ratio", a slightly more driving dancefloor cut rich in skittish drums and undulating electronic melodies.

  1. The Rotating Assembly - "Seasons Of My Life" (feat Billy Lo)
  2. Green Pickles - "Feedback" (feat Billy Lo & M Pittman)
Review: Sound Signature kick off the new year with a pleasing reissue of some smoky soul from Theo Parrish's outlet for his most jazzy tendencies. On "Seasons Of My Life" Billy Lo croons over a muted trumpet while a surprisingly rough stomp gets hammered out of a live kit. It's a dreamy, sunkissed jam with all the loose, free-flowing elements you would expect from something with Parrish's stamp on it. Marcellus Pittman helps out on "Feedback", as a sparser, meandering groove does the nasty with some restrained keys. For that Detroit beatdown flavour away from the dancefloor, this is as good as it gets.

Review: Timothy J. Fairplay's label Centurians Of Rome is back with its first vinyl release, after Timothy's 2013/14's cassette only mini albums 'Good For Driving In The Night' & 'The Promise Of Midi'. COR003 signals the return of the mysterious & enigmatic Antoine Rouge. After the release of the 'Spook Juke' EP on Timothy J. Fairplay & Scott Frasers Crimes Of The Future label Antoine disappeared, reports of his death in the French media last year remained unconfirmed and then in February this year he walked into Timothy's studio saying he'd spent the last year focusing on playing 'Hero Quest'. 'Eye of The Star Warrior' follows on stylistically from his debut EP. Produced entirely on junkshop preset keyboards, as after what happened before these are the only synths Timothy will let Antoine borrow. Four Trax of transcendental phase distortion Wavehouse from the self proclaimed Star Warrior.

Review: Hungarian producer Route 8 first joined Lobster Theremin in 2014 following a series of acclaimed singles for labels such as Nous, Bokhari and Farbwechsel. A couple more releases for imprint and distribution outfit followed, before he surprisingly fell off the radar. Come Home is his first EP for almost two years; predictably, it's really rather good. We're really rather enjoying the rush-inducing warmth and positivity of opener "Come Home", where chanted, delay-laden vocal samples and sultry Latin trumpet solos drift across a sumptuous deep house groove, and the electrofunk-sampling thrust of deep gospel house bumper "FunFun". That said, both "Turning Point" (a deep and spacey breakbeat house number) and the rolling, riff-heavy late night shuffler "From The Valley" are also superb.

  5. Rain Sketch
Review: There's only been one other release to date on the aptly titled Night Sea Journey, whose M.O. is, "focused on simplicity." The Chicago label started life with label heads Garrett David and Colin Johnson, and now Adam Rowe has come to join in with his own take on simple approaches in ambient and deep house. "9_27 (edit 1)" may have a lovely sub bass propelling it, but the languorous quality of the keys makes it feel almost static in the best possible way. "8_27 (edit 1)" welcomes some needlepoint drum machine rhythms into the mix, preferring a broken beat over anything too straight. "Nite Houss" has a similar mysterious charm you might hear on a Real Soon record, while "Hanging Lake" swerve into more ambient territory again, with spectacular results.

Review: Katie Campbell AKA Roza Terenzi has been in fine form over the last couple of years, offering up must-check EPs on Dekmantel, Kalahari Oyster Cult, Butter Sessions and Bizarro. Here the Australian producer makes her first appearance on Klasse Wrecks, offering up the delightfully clanking, funk-fuelled analogue bounce of "Metal Glo"- a wonderful combination of Syclops style electronic refrains, loose-limbed machine drums and attractive melodies - and the even wilder and sleazier, acid-fuelled peak-time wonkiness of "Allstarz", whose dreamy chords offer a neat counterpoint to the ragged antics underpinning them. There are two tidy "Metal Glo" remixes, too: a deliciously glassy eyed, bleeping revision from label bosses Luca Lozano and Mr Ho, and a Morgan Wright and RP Remix that turns the track into a sweaty, off-beat treat.

Review: The Sugarhouse label hits its fifth outing with one of the core members of the collective, Roy Rozell. For the first time Rozell is at the helm on his own, and he sounds completely at ease twisting out refined deep house meanderings for the soulful crowd. "Last Time Around" has a resplendent amount of live key flexing going on, and all the while a loose and limber rhythm section rolls out underneath. "Easy Easy" maximises on plastic trumpet tones and lets them freestyle over the top of a sunkissed, smoked out groove. "100 Percent" takes over the B side with pan pipe moods and synthetic string swells aplenty, making for a truly atmospheric deep house jam.

  1. Who Are We? (11:26)
  2. What Does It Mean? (12:45)
Review: Chicago house master Ron Trent is back on his own Electric Blue stable, surfaces back onto our shelves under his iconic RT Factor alias. No introduction is needed for this man and what he's done for house music since the early 1990's, so we'll just go straight to the music, and see what he's onto in early 2016. The A-side is populated by "Who Are We?", a bumpy, energetic house lick with a full groove made up of layers upon layers of pads, rich melodies, and euphoric vocals - a true house beaut. On the flip, "What Does It Mean" is harder and a little deeper, but Tren't sense of music still heavily features thanks to a gorgeous line of piano keys. The good shit.

Review: Between them, Rudder and Kresy have released material on a rather impressive list of labels, including Hivern Discs, Large Music, Freerange, Nurvous and Papa Records. Given this rock solid track record, you'd expect this collaborative outing on Roots For Bloom to be stacked with deep house gold. It is, of course, starting with opener "Stateless", where mutilated organ notes, fluttering electronics and drowsy chords ride a bumping groove. "Boulevard" brings a little more late night flavour via elongated chords and a Detroit techno influenced house groove, while "Holdin' On" is a womderfully woozy and summery affair full of eyes-closed vocal samples and fireside-warm sounds. Finally, they reach for the Chicago acid bass and drum machine hits on analogue deep house treat "Release Myself".

It's got the perfect balance of emotion and mystery, human warmth and electro soul. Ashley Beedle dives in with the "Afrikanz On Marz Remix", bringing his illustrious soul and funk flourishes to bear on the jam. Fred Everything's take on the track is snug and undulating, anchored by a buttery bassline and rolling at a woozy tempo without losing its party credentials. Kai Alce delivers the remix of the release though, dropping his delicate but eminently funky touch on the track like only he can.

Review: Ilija Rudman struts out once again on his own turf with this latest slab of sizzling discoid delectability, shaping out all manner of warm and fuzzy grooves across varying tempos and intensities. "Metronomia" is a laid back workout, but it's the bombastic funk of "So Much" that steals the show on the A-side with its crafty construction and killer bass hooks. "Hibiscus Theatre" meanwhile ploughs deeper into the soil with its swirling pads and shimmering percussion lines, and then "If You Change Your Mind" rounds the EP off with some exemplary deep house for the more reflective souls to get down to.

Review: Is It Balearic? welcome Ilija Rudman back to the fold for the first time since the excellent True Colours album back in 2015, and the Croatian disco house mainstay sounds like he's on searing form. "Motions" is a luscious deep house jam with a throbbing low end, but made all the more powerful by the sultry vocal turn from Andre Espeut. Italo house veteran Don Carlos is a smart shout for two remixes, kicking off with the uplifting yet understated groove of the vocal version before spreading over the B side with the beatless but driving pulse of the ambient mix.

Review: It's been a fair old while that Dana Ruh has doing her thing, from the inception of her Brouqade imprint through to her debut album on Underground Quality. Giving the vinyl lovers out there a chance to play the music, this first installment taken from the CD gives a perfect overview of the appeal that Ruh holds for house heads. "Solstice" eases things in with an intro tone that promises the grade of deepness you would expect from Underground Quality, before "Don't You Find Me" kicks into action with a snappy broken beat construction, playful keys and sweet chords. "The Wish You Told Me" opts for a more classic kind of deep house construction, while "Got To Work" too trades on moody chords, crisp beats and a hooky vocal lick.

Review: Dana Ruh is best known as a figurehead for the mighty Brouqade, but she's equally found on many other labels in the mean time. On this occasion she's brought her distinctive, heavy grooving style to Autoreply for an examination of the artistic process in the shape of one jam, three ways. "Round 2 Reel 1" is the funkiest of the lot, using some killer swing and vibing chords to make for an upbeat, infectious yet still nicely kinked sound. "Round 2 Reel 2" takes things into a more intricate, techy headspace where snaking rhythms interlock with pockets of synth abstraction. "Round 2 Reel 3" continues that theme into a rich, exotic forest of mechanical tones for the adventurous techno trippers to zone out on.

Review: Continuing the vinyl issue of Dana Ruh's debut LP, the high grade deep house just keeps coming on Naturally Part 2. "Education" keeps the energy levels up with some neat interplay between a bubbling, acidic bassline and soulful chord flourishes, all over a snappy 4/4 beat. "My Cave" deviates into more tripped-out broken beat business, all the while anchored by the most soothing of deep house chords. "Jammin" features Underground Quality label boss Jus Ed laying down some subtle vocal contributions which echo out over a smart spread of tones, before "D's Interupt (Dub)" displays the more experimental side to Ruh's output with an abstract beatless loop surrounded by gentle applications of texture.

Review: Jus Ed clearly believes in the music of Dana Ruh, affording the German producer three records over which to spread her album. On this final installment the deep house delicacies don't let up a jot, with "Train Ride To You" leaning all over the A side with its soaring refrain comprised of tender piano and a powerful high-end sustained string. "Dirty Egg" tricks things out a little more with a leftfield, dubby finish to the gently ticking track as disparate swirls and swathes of synth pulse around the frequency range. Finishing up on "Just Don't" brings the album back into focus with the kind of unfussy deep house that largely defines Ruh's style, and a classy style it is too.

"Church Music" in its original form is a truly soul-stirring beast that plies more organ action than you can handle and an endlessly teasing groove to get people shocking out on the floor. Meanwhile the "Floor Mix" gives it to you straight, riding on top of a chunky Nu Groove flavour beat. "New Beat" is a crunchier affair that deals in experimental kinds of percussion and errant synth lines, and "You & Me" rounds the EP out with a floating, synth rich jam for more brooding moments.

Review: The Ghent based We Play House imprint celebrates a decade in the business and what better way to commemorate such than a massive celebratory compilation. On the fifth volume here, label co-head San Soda contributes a couple of smashing tunes, such as the shimmering FM tones on "Retractor" (nailing a lush new-age aesthetic) while the deep/life-affirming soul jam "Juno Love" is not so much an ode to his favorite record store (in our dreams!), more the signature sound of that awesome bassline throughout. Elsewhere, Japan's Humandrone throws down a raw jackin' and acid soaked stormer in the form of "Tonight" and the legendary Reggie Dokes' "Dream Catcher" gets an FCL (San Soda & co-head Red D) edit from back in 2009.

Review: Vibraphone Records continues to deepen its contemporary repertoire by inviting Andrew Soul into the fold with a vocal contribution from house music legend Robert Owens. "Slipping Into Darkness" is a beautifully rendered deep house gem with expressive piano work, rubbery bass synth tones, but in some ways the minimalism of Vincent Floyd's remix gives Owens' vocals a chance to take centre stage. "As You Are" is a crooked, broken beat exploration on the fringes of deep house, and Owens' voice sounds resplendent in the more experimental surroundings before Nick Anthony Simoncino comes on board with a 90s flavoured, darkside remix of the highest order.
