Review: Peaky Beats is a great name for a label that serves up such irresistible house and garage jams as it has so far over its first eight EPs. This ninth outing is no less desirable, coming from the in house production team in collaboration with Breakfake. 'Life In Stereo' hits a perfect note between kinetic drums and soulful, jazzy chords deigned to melt the heart. 'Rat City' is more filthy - a warped bassline screws about beneath more sleazy broken beats. 'Chapel Town' brings low end dubstep wobble to the party and 'Dub The Acid' is another filthy dirty skanker with echoing hits and mutant bass.

Review: Last year, Mother Tongue Records released Madre Lingua, an album of all-star collaborations between broken beat and deep house musicians and producers helmed by Verona-based Brit Patrick Gibin. This 12" updates two of the tracks from the set, with Gibin once again to the fore. On side A, he joins forces with long-time friend and studio buddy Kaidi Tatham to remix EDB and Gary Superfly's 'Pressure'. Their tack is bouncy and synth-heavy, with spacey, out-there lead lines and intergalactic-sounding pads rising above a Maurice Fulton-as-Syclops style bassline and loose-limbed house drums. 'Night Sky', however, abstracts the 'minimal' style into something that is actually quite maximal; though duly working in the tech house formula, the sound palette is dystopian and dark. Review: Whether she likes it or not, Sophie Lloyd will always be known for the unfeasibly uplifting gospel disco-meets-gospel-house anthem 'Calling Out'. That was released five years ago and ever since, she's struggled to embrace it's shadow. With 'Angels By My Side', Lloyd seems to have embraced this, delivering another fine gospel-powered number that inhabits a similar sonic space while being different enough to avoid accusations of treading water. It's genuinely good, too, with Pauline Taylor delivering superb lead vocals over a hybrid gospel disco/stomping gospel sound hybrid full of Hammond organ licks, booming bass guitar, piano house riffs and stirring orchestration. Review: Tony Ruffcutt is a legend in the reggae scene and has been since the 70s. The label named after him has now got the right to recut a classic from that era, 'Love And Only Love' by Fred Locks. The original is a full-flavoured rhythm with nice wooden hits and brassy horns accompanying the fat-bottomed low end while the vocal is smooth up top. A dub mix and then a super dub adds even more weight to the low end and on the flipside is another roots icon in the form of Prince Alla who adds fresh lyrics to 'Man On Board'. The various overdubs and vocals were recorded in Jamaica with mixdowns taken care of by the legendary Caveman.

Review: Johnny Osbourne remains one of the most popular reggae vocalists of all time, and he is still turning out the jams now, well into his 70s. This one finds him billed alongside Jah Sawdem, about whom we know nothing and in fact this is the one and only entry next to his name on Discogs. A fine one it is, though, with a blissed out reggae rhythm topped by smooth as you like vocals and authentic instrumentals and keys. Review: Sam Paganini is a long time techno legend and Drumcode is about as big as techno label get right now. Togtjer then make for a mighty force on this new Raev 12" especially as it comes with a remix from the boss man Adam Beyer in collaboration with Layton Giordani. Their take on the title track is a hefty one with industrial overtones, saw tooth synths and squealing synth sounds that makes for an intense atmosphere. The original from big man Sam is a more stripped back and seductive deep techno roller with infectious drum loops.

Review: Massimiliano Pagliara's debut solo EP on his own label Funnuvojere Records is a tribute to the late great Manuel Gottsching. He is a longtime fan of his work who tries to encapsulate the visionary synth sounds of his most famous and hypnotic piece 'E2E4'. He does so across three different interpretations of the same track, each of which tap into different artistic visions and skills. The first is an acid laced and percussive workout that keeps on building, the Traveler dub allows the piano chords more of a central role and The Lonely Drums mix strips things back to the rugged groove.

Review: First released digitally last year, Lilly Palmer's Drumcode label debut has finally made it on to vinyl. All three tracks have proved popular with digital DJs, and it's easy to understand why. Title track 'Resonate' is a fiendishly heavy, near brutal techno excursion in which tight, mind-warping acid lines, creepy aural textures and razor-sharp synth sounds leap above a blistering beat and doom-laden bassline. 'First Time in Space', in which she takes to the mic, is a frankly breathless and insatiably intoxicating acid techno stomper of the sort that Drumcode does so well, while 'Ultimate Feeling' pairs the booming, ten-ton beats associated with Belgian producer Amelie Lens with layers of creepy electronics and warped industrial sounds.

Review: There's not much to go on when it comes this latest release on trusted soul and funk outpost Epsilon. Whoever Pals & Gal were, their sound is rooted in the classic era of 70s soul even if the track was completed bang on the turn of the decade in 1980. There's a big band arrangement powering 'Lil' Bit Different' which was put together by Ron Foster, and there's as much focus on holding down the groove as different instruments coming to the fore to do their thing. The lyrics tell it straight - this is just a little bit different.

Review: Rezpektiva looks to Berlin and the considerable skills of the enigmatic Mario Panagiotis for REZ24twentyfour. Rather than offering up new cuts, the producer has dug back into his discography to unearth four previously released gems from two separate EPs that were originally put out back in the mid-90s. There is some pretty wild variation as a result with opener 'Step 2' being a twitchy and dense early French house cut and 'Autumn' being more dusty breakbeat groover. There is plenty of funk and swing to the kinetic 'Do It Again' then 'Lost' closes out with some more bristling tech house beats this time overlaid with eerie synth phrases.

Review: Following a near two-year absence from vinyl, the usually prolific Misha Paniflov is back on Funk Night Records with another nostalgic 45 rooted in deep funk, library music, cinematic soundtracks and psychedelia. The Estonian first offers up 'Dr Juvenal's Solution', a jaunty and genuinely heavy dancefloor work out marked out by sixties spy-movie guitars, bustling breaks, intergalactic synth sounds and warming bass. He opts for a more laidback, downtempo feel on side B, with stretched out, Peter Green style guitar solos and meandering Moog lines reclining atop a bittersweet backing track.

Review: The Record Store Day releases are coming thick and fast already and Dynamite Cuts have got one of the more essential ones here. It features a pair of tracks from Steve Parks, who looks as cool as can be on the much loved cover. This is the first time the lead single has ever been put on its own 7" after first coming on his 1981 album. That is now mega-rare and a high value collector's item and surely this one will be too, soon enough. The mastering is high class, allowing the free flowing jazz funk goodness to really shine. On the reverse is a more intimate late-night romancer. What a pair of tunes.

Review: DC's Rouser label was a rather short lived imprint but the three acclaimed singes it released were incredibly spacial. Arguably the best of the trio was from The Past - Present, And The Future who expertly moved between beautiful and ghostly sounds. Their work demonstrating a timeless understanding of love and longing and always came steeped in plenty of emotion. The two tunes here on this fresh 7" showcase that in heart rending fashion. Review: As the months warm up we all tend to lean towards the warm and fleshy sounds of dub, which makes releases like this one on Newentun all the more crucial. 'Sugarman' is a classic bit of lovers rock with those earthy guitar plucks, big wood block hits and steel drum sounds. The vocal is silky smooth and full of yearning while heat damaged organs and lazy harmonica further flesh things out. The Ska version has a more clipped and swiping rhythm with a great height to it and then the Jonas Sanchez Trombone Version has big fat wind leads that scream summer.

Review: Pearl steps up to make some arresting and high octane techno deliveries here via the first release from new label Koas. The Light We Chose is full of express dancefloor burners, not least the opener 'Patience'. It's a thumping techno cut with oversized hi hats and jittery low ends. 'Adrenaline' is just as raw and surging with synths peeling off the brutal drums and 'Unknown Discipline' then gets loopy and textured to lock the floor into a hypnotic sate. 'En Lo Exotico' then bangs the box with more unrelenting techno energy and two further cuts drop into slightly deeper but no less effective rhythms.

Review: Germany's RFR Records welcomes some high-grade Vienna impact from Peletronic here with his tough blend of electro and abstract house hitting the spot across three new cuts. 'Riddim & Bassline' opens up with fizzing synths a percolating percussion over snappy kicks and hits that never sit still, and nor will you. 'Sry I'm Dazed AF' has a cyborg funk feel with rugged bass and crispy broken beat drum programming. For our money, it finds that essence and serves it up in musical form here across a brace of gloriously escapist cuts. Review: Penza Penza is one of many aliases used by funk-fuelled musical polymath Misha Paniflov. This "45" showcases two tracks from the project's recently released debut album, which added heavy funk vibes to a hallucinatory stew of flavoursome psychedelic rock. A-side 'Mad Madis Twist' is gnarly, rugged and impressively heavy, with Paniflov and company wrapping squally, Jimi Hendrix style guitar solos and flanged funk-rock riffs over a cacophonous, all-action rhythm track. 'Shulz' Thing' is a little tighter, more bass-heavy and undeniably funkier, though the wild guitars and acid-fried attitude remain front and centre.

Review: Brighton imprint Furthur Electronix continues full steam ahead with its prolific output this year, and it's a big week for them. Alongside a great EP by Aussie Lou Karsh, we have this new one by Greek producer George Kontogiannidis aka Pera Sta Ori, who has racked up some impressive releases thus far on Musar, Brokntoys and Yellow Machines. As on previous works, the Sick Apian EP further explores Kontogiannidis' love of classic UK rave sounds. For instance A side cut 'Antio Zoi (TGRCCC)' utilises pitch shifted hardcore breaks underpinned by a dystopian electro atmosphere. Review: Vocal trio The Petersons hailed from Waycross and took their name from Kenneth Peterson, the band leader, founder, drummer and vocalist who worked with keys man Salem Chatman and vocalist and bassist Johnny Members. They performed all up and down the East Coast of America and answered an advert they saw in Philadelphia in 1973 which led them to sign for Omega Sound, a small independent recording company formed by Frank Fioravanti. Review: Two previously unreleased jazz gems from Finnish flutist and saxophonist Esa Pethman, who's visit to Belgium is forever chronicled on this limited 7" vinyl. 'The Flame' is an incredible alto flute composition described in the liner notes by Mikko Mattlar as a 'true modern Fenno-Jazz evergreen', featuring Jean Fannis on piano and a particularly stellar drum performance from Al Jones. 'Like Steel' showcases Pethman in a completely different light on tenor sax, with an incredible trumpeter found in Francesco Santucci. This high quality 7" is a true slice of proto-modern jazz and a must have for European jazz fanatics. An incredible piece of history.

Review: Soon as you drop the needle on PH Project's opener 'Blue Yellow Twist' here we guarantee you will be twisting your face in mock disc guts. The bassline is a filthy and old-school gem with organ chord stabs and spoken word snippets adding the irresistible sense of naughty house funk. DMA then bangs the box with cosmic synths and hints of 90s post-rave, Pilot System cruise on a chunky bit of bass-driven house and Frozilla & TJ go deep on far-sighted chords and bubbly bass. This is unpretentious, functional but fun house music from a small but already well-formed label.

Review: Phara's Falling Forward EP is about just that - leaning into a still techno breeze and letting it sweep you off your feet. The title track is an expertly economical yet dynamic sound with panel-beaten techno loops, bulky drums and subtle synths lashing about for extra edge. 'Order Disorder' brings more intensity with its urgent and paranoid synth loops front and centre while 'Gate1' is another streamlined banger a la early Skudge. As with so many techno EPs, there is a nod to the Jeff Mills school of interplanetary minimalism on closer 'Cerulean Blue.'

Review: It is now well over a year since we got hyped by the first release from Phara on the Phaar label. Thankfully we are finally blessed with a second hand-stamped 12" that contains more brilliantly supple yet powerful techno. This is techno that is warm and has a real sense of machine soul no matter the mood or tempo. Things open in artful fashion before the pace picks up on 'Fleshy Part Of The Thigh' with its cantering kicks setting a heady pace while lush harmonics peel off the top. 'In Dubio' is a dub techno banger while 'Float' captures the essence of early and soulful Detroit techno in a modern framework.

Review: Razor-N-Tape is like catnip to disco and funk lovers - the label seems to serve up endless amounts of dance floor gems and now it is a couple of sick remixes of Phenomenal Handclap Band which have got us all ready for the weekend. First up is a sublime and deep Prince Thomas Diskomiks of 'Burning Bridges' which has gloopy bass and leggy nu-disco drums all overlaid with some funky guitar work and ethereal vocals. The more slow and lumpy original is included while on the flip is 'It Was The Summer' (Each Other remix) which is laced up with restless acid tweaks and slapping hits that mark for a much darker vibe than the hazy and laidback original.

Review: Phillipi's second solo EP 'Terra Gira' lands on Deewee and is another full-throttle club excursion. 'Hacido' kicks off with pulsating techno drums and layers of shiny synth that are topped off with rubbery acid loops. 'Tensao' then sinks into a deeper groove with hints of synthwave and dark disco under a deadpan vocal. It's a strobe-lit slow burner that will cause real carnage. 'Todo Dia' closes out a fresh EP with more twisted metal, bendy electronics and rubbery bass lines topped off with a menacing vocal. A left-of-centre way to jack your crowd for sure.

Review: Phono's 'Music Is My Sex' is one of those delicious obscurities that seem to have been a feature of the original Italo-disco scene. It was the work of Phono, a one-off project helmed by sadly departed Italian DJ, occasional producer and radio and TV presenter Attilo de Rosa, and originally slipped out back in 1983 via the legendary Mr. Disc Organization label. As this reissue proves, it's a pleasingly eccentric and alluring affair. Available in vocal and instrumental versions, it's a rough-round-the-ages chunk of electrofunk/boogie rich in squelchy synth-bass, Roland JX3P solos, unfussy drum machine beats and clipped guitar licks. The timbales-sporting, dancefloor dub-style instrumental is probably our pick of the pair, though the accentuated English vocals on the A-side mix are undeniably fun.

Review: Unbelievably, Drumcode Records celebrates its 25th year in business in 2021. Adam Beyer's popular imprint has already delivered a swathe of must-check releases this year, and this collaborative outing from Pig & Dan and Victor Ruiz is another that label fans would do well to take note of. A-side 'Consciousness' is particularly potent, with the trio adding gnarly, mind-melting, dark room-ready riffs to a throbbing, trance-inducing techno groove. If tech-trance/neo-trance isn't your thing, turn to the flip. They're you'll find the moody and stomping big room techno of 'Music Takes You' - all doom-laden stabs and kick-drum driven heaviness - and the more melodious, colourful and rushing peak-time bliss of 'Silk', whose lengthy breakdowns are likely to send shivers down the spines of suitably refreshed dancers.

Review: Chromatophore makes a head turning debut in the world of vinyl with a various artists EP that reaches all points of the electro spectrum. Plant43 will be no stranger to those in the know and opens up in urgent fashion with the synth waves and driving grooves of 'European Tides'. Kev Cotter gets a little more introspective and deep in his complex 'The Bronx Executioner' with a mood bassline underpinning the whole thing. The most experimental of the lot is Allward's closing gem 'Slowburst,' a mix of shimming synths and disappearing pads that leave you floating adrift in the skies.

Review: Anthony Donje and Paul Elliott are Pleasireood and this is their first release. It is a sun-scorched funk fuelled offering that is hella lovely and full of flavour as well as dance floor clout. 'Firework' clocks in at under three minutes but it is a real killer, with layers of hands claps, broken beats and lush melodies all working you into a lather. On the reverse is a more introspective piece to show a different side to their sound. It has snaking melodies that entice you to follow as the rolling funk rhythms and intoxicating melodies cast their fine spell.
