Review: While hardly a "Holy Grail"all bar a few people didn't know it existed until recently, D.J Never Sleep's sole single, the private press gem 'Teorema', can certainly be described as "buried treasure". It was reportedly the work of some experienced Italian producers, though its' sound is all Spanish guitar solos, early house-meets-Latin freestyle beats, joyous Piano riffs and evocative female vocals, it is pure formative Balearic house. Review: The Dig This Way label outta Italy continues to build a fine head of steam with its stomping second disco release. 'Spell Bound' comes from PSK, and is taken from their one and only album Disco Season back in 1980. It was the opening track on that album, written by Austine Rigar and Jones Coakly, and is a bright, joyful groove. The big vocals bring exotic international flavours over the funky bass work, trilling drums and afro-tinged rhythms. ON the flip is another tune from that album, 'Revolution (Work Hard In Your Life)' that is all pixelated synth leads, afro-drum patterns and even a hint of ska swagger.

Review: The sophomore release on Miami's Alchemista comes from Translate (Teo Pellegrino) and Joel Pulso, two rising Argentinian producers who join forces for some seriously mental techno excursions on 'Cuadricular Dreaming Pannel'. The first side of this essential 12' features the hypnotic interplanetary minimalism of 'Specific Angles' reminiscent of classic Sleeparchive, followed by the majestic and cyclical title track which this time takes its cues from Jeff Mills' unmistakable Axis sound. Over on the flip, the title track is treated to a surefire remix by the inimitable Oscar Mulero, head of Pole Group, who manages to inject more dancefloor dynamics into the arrangement, accentuating the spacey elements underpinned with a stronger rhythm department while staying true to the vibe of the original.

Review: Gjidoda Music returns with its long awaited third release. It's another various artists affair featuring some right heavy hitters and newcomers alike on the minimal scene. Opening up the first side is US veteran Bruno Pronsato with the typically arcane microhouse cut 'When You Ran Away From Home', followed by some late night mood music by Iljir on 'Ziiik Zaaak'. Over on the flip, Nikdo takes you into a cavernous and glacial realm on 'Confusion' and finally label chiefs (presumably!) Review: Earlier in the year, Miss You offered up a first ever 12-inch pressing of Patrizia Pellegrino obscurity 'Il Mondo Da Una Nuvola', an obscure Italo-disco B-side that they backed with their own tastefully executed extended mix. Here they repeat the trick with one of the Italian singer and actress's earlier B-sides, 1982 gem 'Musica Spaziale'. In its original form (track one), the song is a throbbing, heavily electronic chunk of infectious Italo-disco excellence topped off with a decidedly cosmic lead vocal from Pellegrino. It comes backed with a suitably moody, chugging and even more musically expansive 'Extended Mix', and a fine TB-303-laden Italo-meets-acid revision courtesy of the cheekily monikered 'DJ Asshole'. Review: Dynamite Cuts brings the heat once more with a second volume of their Sound Music 45s series. Siegfried Schwab takes care of the A-side with 'Getting High', a scorching funk workout with hard-worked guitar chords and precise percussion over lots of wah-wah effects. 'Feel It; flip the script with a superbly stripped-down jazz-funk lounge sound. Klaus Weiss then steps up on 'Time For Rhythm' with some loose, percussive funk beats that are raw and organic, then Peter Thomas closes down with 'Documentation', a more richly instrumental and multi-layered jazz-funk sound that conveys real grandeur.

Review: There's plenty to get sucked into on this latest 12" transmission from Germany's Movida. It is Part 1 of a new Waterdrop EP from a quartet of artists. Somfay goes it alone to start with on the far-sighted and zoned-out house of 'Arborvitae (A Voice Like Water). Luc Ringeisen & Funk E then link up for 'Treinta Y Siempre' which is a lithe and sleek electro-tinged rhythm with lovely downbeat bass notes and more uplifting melodic patterns. Last of all is Polyfan Polyphenix, a jittery and rugged rhythm with razor sharp hi-hats and twisted vocals that bring a leftfield sound to 'Polymorph 2.'

Review: Raj Pannu has past form working with Coldcut, but he's making waves as a solo producer and following up a record in 2017 with this stand out slice of broken techno for To Pikap. The Greek label prefers taking a sideways approach to club music, and that's evident from the deft swerve on Pannu's 'Brute' as it glides through fragmented synth licks and syrupy bass. Tapping into a vein somewhere between Livity Sound and Fever AM, this is modernist gear for the crooked crowd. Subtlety comes as standard, but not at the expense of flair and finesse.

Review: The Sound Migration label takes another trip back in to the CATT articles to explore the proto-trance and early bleep techno sound they were pushing from 1988-1991. Another five essential gems from the modestly sized catalogue get an airing here, kicking off with Confidential's haunting 'Amphibious Carbine' followed by the boxy pressure of Exocet's 'Nitrogen'. This is astounding stuff throughout, not least the freak-zone trip of Holy Ghost's 'Walking On Air', which sounds like the common denominator between Ibiza and Goa in their nascent days as party destinations. Don't sleep on the clattering funk of Exocet's 'Overdose' either, a seriously snappy groover with all kinds of oddball sampling going on.

Review: There's not much to go on when it comes this latest release on trusted soul and funk outpost Epsilon. Whoever Pals & Gal were, their sound is rooted in the classic era of 70s soul even if the track was completed bang on the turn of the decade in 1980. There's a big band arrangement powering 'Lil' Bit Different' which was put together by Ron Foster, and there's as much focus on holding down the groove as different instruments coming to the fore to do their thing. The lyrics tell it straight - this is just a little bit different.

As a result they are now familiar to many and their track 'Window Shopping' emerged from an almost-lost master tape. Review: A shining example of soundtrack reggae, 'Sally's Song' was first incarnated in an unlikely spectacle: Tim Burton's A Nightmare Before Christmas. Originally composed by the film's scorer Danny Elfman, reggae reinterpreters Aanant Pradhan and Larry McDonald (of Skatalites fame) here lay down a dour dub cover version. Wistful, moody and clean. The B-side, meanwhile, shows off the pair's knowledge of film music even further - Henry Mancini's 'It Had Better Be Tonight' from the 1963 version of The Pink Panther makes similar waves as a kettle-drum heavy dub version.

What better way to mark the commencement of its third decade, then, than with some new music? 20 Years Of Phonica: Sampler 3 pulls together artists from the electronic vanguard, starting with Paramida & E-Talking's 'Read My Lips' which is an acid-laced 90s techno revival. Review: Like all the best releases on Best, Pussycat were something of a one hit wonder who appeared and then promptly disappeared after one single in 1983. It's a wicked shame, seeing as their track "Le Chat" was a wonderful fusion of disco funk and synth pop. The vocal is catchy enough, but the "Short Dub" version is where the real heat is to be found - this isn't over the top delay wielding but rather a subtle approach that brings the strongest elements to the foreground. The "instrumental" takes you on a smoother ride, but those who want a bit more spice in their selection will be clamouring for that dub.

Review: Minimal production/DJ master Ricardo Villalobos enjoys a renown that lends him just about enough credo to release anything he likes whenever he likes and this latest pair of remixes of Paul Desenne's (in collaboration with Alonso Toro and Pedro Vasquez) 'Isiminaimanin' - the lead track from his gemlike Venezuelan gem of an album, Alzheimer - is a case in point. A furtive legend of the Venezuelan folk underground, Alzheimer, which was released back in 2001, expressed Desenne's talents and tastes, expansive outwards from his own Latin cello home-stretch and into further-afield wildernesses such as the Venezuelan cuatro (small guitar), Hawaiian bamboo clarinet, and electric cello - all instruments in constructing totemic, tribal, conceptual flights of fancy. It's this eclecticism on which Villalobos evidently feeds, with his two mixes expressing both fast and slow minimal-tech iterations of Desenne's mysticism.

Review: The Third Room concludes its so far excellent various artists series with a third and final instalment of yet more future-facing and heady cosmic techno. Justine Perry kicks things off with the deep space synths and paired back hypnosis of 'Diversion' while Hadone then bangs a little harder with 'Strain Relief' which has twitchy synth motifs and hard, hammering beats. HWRD's 'Mirage' is a buoyant techno bouncer with loopy synth ringlets all interacting with each other to mind-melting effect and Quelza's 'Domino' dips into deepest of dub techno territory to shut down a nice diverse EP.

Review: With over 50 years of experience dating way back to the early 70s with the progressive outfit Zebra, Joan has left quite a discography that is still being discovered and enjoyed. This EP - Joan Bibloni's second appearance on the label in total - features three versions of 'Badia Onirica', two of them being language versions and then the instrumental. Overall, the song is a track fitting for the Cafe Del Mar sound - a mix of folk, electronica, house with a Latin and folk influence and versions in Spanish and Catalan. Review: Yore Records have past form in sneaking out Detroit-rooted gear from legends masquerading under pseudonyms - rumours abounded around the one-shot Trackleton release back in 2009. Now here comes P0lyrhythm with a minimal amount of background information and some highly refined machine soul referencing the origins of techno in its title. It's either an extremely authentic-sounding tribute or a sneaky gift from a pioneer, who knows for sure, and more to the point who cares? It's magical techno with pure uplift in its bones, offering the kind of restorative approach which is so desperately needed when so much club music tilts towards annihilation. Highly recommended for all lovers of the original techno sound.

For this series, Dynamite Cuts are looking back on a mid-1970s series of EPs released by Weiss originally for the famous library Sound Music. Carrying a minimal production that still has appeal for the modern listener (don't Dynamite know it), the four tracks here are curt, squelchy and beat-centric, with highlights including the clavichord-wacky 'Frogs', the sonically obese 'Productive Facilities', and the space-age drum freakout 'Coordinates Meeting'.

P0lyrhythm is the artist behind it and the title, 'Motor City Dreams' gives you an idea of what to expect inside - Detroit-style techno with retro-future synth work. Opener '313 Hazy Days' is just that - an acidic mix of swirling pads and driving techno drums full of hi-tek soul. 'Shimmering Lights' has old school percussive sounds and singing synth patterns that light up the deeper drums and then the title cut takes off to the stars on wispy leads and sleek beats. 'Ray Eyes' completes this most tasteful of deep techno EPs.

Review: Demi Riquisimo's 'A Lifetime On The Hips' sublabel returns to make it a hat-trick of releases for 2023 with the impressive 'Body Move' V/A, featuring eclectic club cuts from Dreamrdreamr, SY, Papa Nugs, Elfenberg, Absolute. & Ysanne. Dreamdreamr's emotive 'Zone 4 Booty Call' kicks off the A-side; it's a track that effortlessly fuses elements of deep house, trance, and r&'b, setting the the tone perfectly for an EP not bound by the borders of any genre. The titular 'Body Move' by SY is up next; a no-nonsense house chugger with flourishes of Italian 90s progressive and acid - a perfect modern interpretation of a foundational strand of club music. Review: Phono's 'Music Is My Sex' is one of those delicious obscurities that seem to have been a feature of the original Italo-disco scene. It was the work of Phono, a one-off project helmed by sadly departed Italian DJ, occasional producer and radio and TV presenter Attilo de Rosa, and originally slipped out back in 1983 via the legendary Mr. Disc Organization label. As this reissue proves, it's a pleasingly eccentric and alluring affair. Available in vocal and instrumental versions, it's a rough-round-the-ages chunk of electrofunk/boogie rich in squelchy synth-bass, Roland JX3P solos, unfussy drum machine beats and clipped guitar licks. The timbales-sporting, dancefloor dub-style instrumental is probably our pick of the pair, though the accentuated English vocals on the A-side mix are undeniably fun.

Review: Latest in the Italian soundtrack reissues crop comes this pair of tracks from the soundtrack of Un Uomo Dalla Pelle Dura (The Boxer), a 1972 film directed by Franco Prosperi and starring Robert Blake and Catherine Spaak. Composed by Carlo Pes - who was also the guitarist of the infamous quartet I Marc 4, who probably played on this session as well - 'The Riff' and 'Bossa Party' are are light-footed, drum-led funk number and a piano-led supernova respectively. Perfect accompaniments for the subject of a disgruntled boxer fighting for his dignity.

Review: Ian Weatherall and Duncan Gray's Sons Of Slough project has done plenty of tinkering in the intersection between club and dub music, and somewhere between all that Scottish rock perennials Primal Scream often find their own comfortable nook to stretch out. As such, this 12" seems like a natural course of events, even if it came about through the pure whimsy of a day-dreaming muso (Weatherall) wondering what would happen if an obscure bonus track got stripped down and sent through the echo chamber. Review: Rezpektiva looks to Berlin and the considerable skills of the enigmatic Mario Panagiotis for REZ24twentyfour. Rather than offering up new cuts, the producer has dug back into his discography to unearth four previously released gems from two separate EPs that were originally put out back in the mid-90s. There is some pretty wild variation as a result with opener 'Step 2' being a twitchy and dense early French house cut and 'Autumn' being more dusty breakbeat groover. There is plenty of funk and swing to the kinetic 'Do It Again' then 'Lost' closes out with some more bristling tech house beats this time overlaid with eerie synth phrases.

This one hears a revived new one from The Melodians, 'Sweet Rose', which previously only made it to some now very dusty old rocksteady 45's. It is a brilliantly mixed bag, with Friedrich Ernst's 'Clone Scratch' bringing unsettling electro madness to start and The Isolator's 'Locknr01' exploring more stripped-back and sparse sounds that are built on neck-snapping breaks. Anachronism's 'Lost Control By Distance' is the sort of turbulent sonic climax you get in during the boss battle moments of a sci-fi movie, and a trio of B-side cuts keep up the originality with Planetary Secrets' 'Establishment' a particular highlight.

Review: Dirty Hands is close to double figures now and its ninth EP is another tech house triumph that pairs off Olga Kool and Per Hammar across three sweet sounds. 'Beshket' is pure dancing business with icy hi hats cutting up a hurried and garage inflected house groove that has real swing and wobbly chords all held together by mysterious bassline. 'Darth Vader' is a twisted bit of cosmic tech funk with paranoid vocals and squelching acid synths. 'Jumbotron' closes out with plenty of fat-bottomed bass and bubbly synths that are full of flavour and future tech funk.

Review: This hand-stamped white label 12" from the Pulp Corn crew is the 10th such offering and still, they are cooking up irresistible house fusions that do plenty of good things. 'Track 1' here takes a classic vocal sample from the Pulp Fiction movie and layers it into a freewheeling disco house sound that is cosmic, funky and retro-future by design. After that loopy workout comes the more freewheeling broken beats and Latin-inspired sounds of 'Track 2' which again has a classic movie sample as the centrepiece while the drums evolve all around. Playful and fun for sure.

Review: Pole's 2022 album Tempus featured one particular track, 'Stechmuck' which was centred on the sound of his dying Minimoog. It's a tidy continuation of the faulty Waldorf filter which inspired his project name in the first place, and now Stefan Betke has taken the inspiration of his broken gear further by inviting a heavyweight cast of remixers to reversion the track. You might not have expected UK electro punk agitators Sleaford Mods to be crossing paths with German minimalist dub, but here we are and the results are incendiary. Elsewhere, Rrose delivers a textbook slice of writhing, tactile techno and Alessandro Cortini brings his grandiose synth expertise to bear on the track.

Review: It might only be young but Sounds of Sirius is a label that has got plenty of attention over its first few EPs. This seventh outing from the New Zealand crew welcomes a quartet of minimalists who all offer up their own take on the genre. The master Mihai Pol opens with the gurgling late-night intricacies of 'The Sun' then Last Pines explores a tripped out 5am mood with paranoid vocals and warped synths on 'Midnight 01.' Nibaaldo's 'El Repaso De Ludovico' is a superb tapestry of reverb, loops, underlapping drums and snaking bass and Enzo Leep then offers a more peak time and punchy closer in 'Full Bright Inside' to end another fresh EP.

Ionescu kicks off with 'Low Ride Her,' a balmy mix of lithe synths and cosmically minded pads that unfurl over fresh beats. Review: A part-posthumous reunion of a longstanding collaboration between two titans of German ambient, Move D and the late Pete Namlook hear three of their most enduring classics reissued via Away Music. Drawing on slightly different traditions - D hailing from sophisti-minimal and Namlook a denizen of the more beatless, heavenly ambient and trance flaunted on his FAX label - the pair almost always produced an unmistakable style together, mired in many-a hazy, padded cloud and modular texture. These hallmarks are on full display here with 'Hardwired Tangent' on particular - what sounds to be an early alt-version of their beautiful compilation cut 'Wear Your Love Out' - while the blissful B-sider 'Hardwired Hypotenuse + Asymptote' stands out as a more mathematical ponderance of ungrounded space.
