Review: Malaga-based producer Pablo Dread comes to Beat Machine Records for the eleventh edition of the special series Swinging Flavors, this time for the titular 'Hardcore Blips'. It's a limited edition 7" vinyl featuring swanging bassline kicks, shaking us to our core. This is a full-throttle journey hurtling towards uncontrollable euphoria with electrifying vibrations that magnetically pull us into a one-way ticket to ecstasy. The track's old-school rave sound, a hallmark of Dread's productions, immerses us ambiances typical of the 90s, with recurring piano chords that give way to a heavy and strict drum & bass drop. The single features a special remix by Fanu (Janne Hatula), known for his dynamic and evolving rhythms. Hailing from Helsinki, Finland, Fanu takes a departure from his usual thick chord-driven pieces, opting for a more minimal yet delightfully busy and slightly wonky approach. Review: German funk act The Poets Of Rhythm have more than left their mark on a scene that wasn't so popular back in their heyday. They have got plenty of great albums to explore and several superb singles, of which this is one. 'Practice What You Preach' is a track from their debut album released on Soulciety in 1993. Despite a hiatus from albums until their return with a Ninja Tune LP in 2001, the band remained active in the 7"s circuit. Surprisingly, a part two to the same track exists, serving as an instrumental version of the original 1993 release. On the B-side, a fresh funk track, previously released under the alias Mighty Continentals, features Bo Baral delivering a rare solo guitar performance alongside ambiguous lyrical content.

Review: Six Nine Records welcomes honey-voiced soul man Terrill Paul to the label for the first time, via a two-track 45 written and produced by the prolific Stone Paxton. The cut for dancefloor plays is undoubtedly A-side 'This Time', a pleasingly nostalgic nod to turn of the 80s disco-soul whose grooves, lyrics and instrumentation recall the celebratory brilliance of Earth, Wind and Fire. Review: A series of Marc Moulin releases are on the way right now courtesy of various reissue projects and this one is pressed up on nice orange vinyl. The Belgian beatmaker is known for downtempo grooves but shows a different side here with two tracks alongside his band, later known as Placebo but here still known as Kiosk. 'Mona Call' is a busy and jazzy cut with dancing drums. 'Waterproof' arrives on the flip carries on in the same vein, with big horns bursting though the arrangement. These are two of the very many crucial tunes in the Moulin catalogue.

Presented with care and offering music that genuinely needs a proper release, they've become a trusted source of discovery for devoted diggers. On this 7" you can hear the sound of WHLS, who have a classic 60s sound with all the dust and crackle of the recording techniques intact. It's a portal into another era as well as a fine, soaring piece of beautifully composed, richly orchestrated soul. You might think some reissues could well be left alone, but these singles are gems for those eternally hunting for sounds unheard.

Siegfried Schwab takes care of the A-side with 'Getting High', a scorching funk workout with hard-worked guitar chords and precise percussion over lots of wah-wah effects. 'Feel It; flip the script with a superbly stripped-down jazz-funk lounge sound. Klaus Weiss then steps up on 'Time For Rhythm' with some loose, percussive funk beats that are raw and organic, then Peter Thomas closes down with 'Documentation', a more richly instrumental and multi-layered jazz-funk sound that conveys real grandeur.

Review: There's not much to go on when it comes this latest release on trusted soul and funk outpost Epsilon. Whoever Pals & Gal were, their sound is rooted in the classic era of 70s soul even if the track was completed bang on the turn of the decade in 1980. There's a big band arrangement powering 'Lil' Bit Different' which was put together by Ron Foster, and there's as much focus on holding down the groove as different instruments coming to the fore to do their thing. The lyrics tell it straight - this is just a little bit different.

Review: Shuya Okino and Pirahnahead, two Japanese producers of soulful house and jazz, present the first of a bundle of new releases, 'Shine'. A subsequent two versions of the eponymous track, which flaunt the lilting vocals of the divine Diviniti, hear a driving yet heavenly song play out over two sides, with its echoic calls of "the sun will rise..." calling out over an impressive instrumental dawn chorus of bass and strings.

Review: A shining example of soundtrack reggae, 'Sally's Song' was first incarnated in an unlikely spectacle: Tim Burton's A Nightmare Before Christmas. Originally composed by the film's scorer Danny Elfman, reggae reinterpreters Aanant Pradhan and Larry McDonald (of Skatalites fame) here lay down a dour dub cover version. Wistful, moody and clean. The B-side, meanwhile, shows off the pair's knowledge of film music even further - Henry Mancini's 'It Had Better Be Tonight' from the 1963 version of The Pink Panther makes similar waves as a kettle-drum heavy dub version.

Review: The work of legendary drummer turned library musician Klaus Weiss continues to be reissued. For this series, Dynamite Cuts are looking back on a mid-1970s series of EPs released by Weiss originally for the famous library Sound Music. Carrying a minimal production that still has appeal for the modern listener (don't Dynamite know it), the four tracks here are curt, squelchy and beat-centric, with highlights including the clavichord-wacky 'Frogs', the sonically obese 'Productive Facilities', and the space-age drum freakout 'Coordinates Meeting'.

Review: Latest in the Italian soundtrack reissues crop comes this pair of tracks from the soundtrack of Un Uomo Dalla Pelle Dura (The Boxer), a 1972 film directed by Franco Prosperi and starring Robert Blake and Catherine Spaak. Composed by Carlo Pes - who was also the guitarist of the infamous quartet I Marc 4, who probably played on this session as well - 'The Riff' and 'Bossa Party' are are light-footed, drum-led funk number and a piano-led supernova respectively. Perfect accompaniments for the subject of a disgruntled boxer fighting for his dignity.

Review: Rock A Shaka, hailing from Japan, go strong in their mission to reissue various reggae 45s. This one hears a revived new one from The Melodians, 'Sweet Rose', which previously only made it to some now very dusty old rocksteady 45's. Prince Glen's 'Hog In A Minty' - formerly 'Hog In Mintea' - meanwhile gets a downtrodden B-side pressing, with Glen singing mournfully of having nowhere to go. Review: Vocal trio The Petersons hailed from Waycross and took their name from Kenneth Peterson, the band leader, founder, drummer and vocalist who worked with keys man Salem Chatman and vocalist and bassist Johnny Members. They performed all up and down the East Coast of America and answered an advert they saw in Philadelphia in 1973 which led them to sign for Omega Sound, a small independent recording company formed by Frank Fioravanti. They recorded the tunes presented here but didn't make much noise at the time, though listening back now it's hard to see why.

Review: DC's Rouser label was a rather short lived imprint but the three acclaimed singes it released were incredibly spacial. Arguably the best of the trio was from The Past - Present, And The Future who expertly moved between beautiful and ghostly sounds. Their work demonstrating a timeless understanding of love and longing and always came steeped in plenty of emotion. The two tunes here on this fresh 7" showcase that in heart rending fashion. 'If I Could Live For Eternity' in particular is an indelible sounding song.

Review: Prince Jamo is a top reggae talent from the UK who has a couple of hot steppers dropping early in 2024. his real name is Ian Campbell and he often does everything himself from the writing to the production to the perforce and after some fine 70s revival roots with 'The Badlands' he is now back on Black Rose with 'Back Off.' It's another sweet and juicy riddim with big horns and swaggering bass topped off by Jamo's buttery smooth vocals. Flip it over for a fine dub-wise version.

Review: UK reggae talent Prince Jamo, real name Ian Campbell, produced, wrote and performed this superb wedge of 70s revival roots in a shaka style. It's as deep and authentic as they come. The A-side original, 'The Badlands', has lazy horns drifting up top like a lone cloud on a red hot day. The percussion is gently sprinkled over the neat guitar riffs and rolling drums while the vocals unfold with real soul. Flip it over and you will get a dub version that is more cavernous, fleshy and deep. A lovely slice of roots that is primed and ready for any decent sound system.

Review: Pellegrino and Zodiac's 'Malia' bills itself as a 7" that serves as "a spell, a journey through the wonder of life, in search of the Mediterranean essence." For our money, it finds that essence and serves it up in musical form here across a brace of gloriously escapist cuts. 'Malia' is a disco cut with sunny synths and loose-limbed rhythms that draw on jazz-funk and Balearic tropes. It has a distinctly Italo twist that cannot fail to get you going. 'Malia Carribean Escapade' is even more exotic with its more cosmic array of synth leads and lively vocals full of Latin passion and flair.

Review: We really have a soft spot for the Four Flies late out of Italy. Their mix of world, Latin, library, jazz and plenty of other cultured in-between sounds always brings a smile to our face and dancers to our dance floors. This new 7" takes the form of a second single to be taken from Psyche's (aka Naples collective Marcello Giannini, Andrea De Fazio and Paolo Petrella) debut long player which is due in May. It's a compelling cut that offers a rich exploration of rhythm and the movements of an imaginary ritual dance. Synths and drums, guitar and bass and percussion all interplay delightfully.

Review: Two previously unreleased jazz gems from Finnish flutist and saxophonist Esa Pethman, who's visit to Belgium is forever chronicled on this limited 7" vinyl. 'The Flame' is an incredible alto flute composition described in the liner notes by Mikko Mattlar as a 'true modern Fenno-Jazz evergreen', featuring Jean Fannis on piano and a particularly stellar drum performance from Al Jones. 'Like Steel' showcases Pethman in a completely different light on tenor sax, with an incredible trumpeter found in Francesco Santucci. This high quality 7" is a true slice of proto-modern jazz and a must have for European jazz fanatics. An incredible piece of history.

Review: Anthony Donje and Paul Elliott are Pleasireood and this is their first release. It is a sun-scorched funk fuelled offering that is hella lovely and full of flavour as well as dance floor clout. 'Firework' clocks in at under three minutes but it is a real killer, with layers of hands claps, broken beats and lush melodies all working you into a lather. On the reverse is a more introspective piece to show a different side to their sound. It has snaking melodies that entice you to follow as the rolling funk rhythms and intoxicating melodies cast their fine spell.

Review: Comb Edits is, at least in our world, officially the best thing to come out of Norwich since Colman's Mustard (or perhaps Justin Fashanu). The hush-hush project has been serving up occasional must-have re-edits for a while, with some of their earliest releases becoming in-demand items on the second-hand market. 'Por Amor', which opened the mystery editor's first EP in 2021, is probably the most sought-after scalpel job of the lot. It's a light-touch rework of a gorgeous slow-motion and sun-splashed Latin cover of a Bobby Caldwell classic - the kind of thing that disco, soul and Balearic heads will love. This reissue presents two new tweaks: a slightly shortened (but no less gorgeous 7"-mix), and a stripped-back, bass-heavy and delay-laden 'dub mix' that's especially essential. Don't sleep!

Review: This Precisions (Philly Group) were a different group to the Detroit Precisions.These two tracks come from when they were working with Philadelphia producer Marty Bryant. We can imagine that some Northern Soul DJs tracked down copies of the scarce original pressing of this fine 7" for B-side "My Sense of Direction (Is Blown)", a heartfelt soul shuffler with serious dancefloor chops. Arguably even better, though, is A-side "Take a Closer Look", a slower, simmering chunk of doo-wop influenced goodness that's as heartbreaking as it is sublime.

Review: The Record Store Day releases are coming thick and fast already and Dynamite Cuts have got one of the more essential ones here. It features a pair of tracks from Steve Parks, who looks as cool as can be on the much loved cover. This is the first time the lead single has ever been put on its own 7" after first coming on his 1981 album. That is now mega-rare and a high value collector's item and surely this one will be too, soon enough. The mastering is high class, allowing the free flowing jazz funk goodness to really shine. On the reverse is a more intimate late-night romancer. What a pair of tunes.

Review: Prince Fatty's new independent record label Lovedub Limited kicks off with a super 7" from the man himself. It is in fact something of an homage to the 1970s jazz-funk of Lonnie Liston Smith but with some hefty dub and reggae treatment. Shniece Mcmenamin stars on vocals and brings plenty of summer soul to the groove which is also lit up with free-flying flute lines over steady reggae rhythms that will sink you in deep to Winston "Horseman" Williams and Carlton "Bubblers" Ogilvie's drums, organ and piano. On the flip is the dub with the iconic Liston-Smith melody leading you through a lazy afternoon in style.

Review: As well as navigating the realms of dub and reggae, infusing each track with his signature vintage sound and infectious grooves, Prince Fatty is well known for taking famous songs and flipping them into reggae territory, a wonderful mix of the familiar and the unepxected that usually works wonders on the dancefloor. With the fantastic 'Black Rabbit,' dub don Prince Fatty masterfully tackles Jefferson Airplane's 60s anthem 'White Rabbit', which took its inspiration from Lewis Carroll's surreal story Alice In Wonderland but hooked those references up to the drug experiences of those countercultural rtimes. The A-side is graced by with the vocals of regular Fatty collaborator Shniece, whose performance does more than simply ape Grace Slick's, adding lines and heaps of her own personality, while rich basslines, swirling echoes and soulful melodies all showcase some exceptional production skills. Naturally, there's a dub version on the B-side, and all in all this a testament to Prince Fatty's enduring influence in the contemporary reggae scene.

Review: Prince Fatty's 'Mercedes Benz' with Shniece and Horseman is a rub-a-dub version of a 1970s hit from Janis Joplin that now gets a very special pressing courtesy of Lovedub Limited. The A-side kicks off with the spine-tingling and epic original vocal before disappearing into a world of reverb. At that point the dubby low end arrives and brings a different vibe to the stunning vocals but one that really makes a mark next to new bars from Horseman, police sirens and funky riffs. It's a tough sound system groove that is backed with a fine version and has been a firm fixture of Prince Fatty's record box for a while now.

Review: Whether she likes it or not, Sophie Lloyd will always be known for the unfeasibly uplifting gospel disco-meets-gospel-house anthem 'Calling Out'. That was released five years ago and ever since, she's struggled to embrace it's shadow. With 'Angels By My Side', Lloyd seems to have embraced this, delivering another fine gospel-powered number that inhabits a similar sonic space while being different enough to avoid accusations of treading water. It's genuinely good, too, with Pauline Taylor delivering superb lead vocals over a hybrid gospel disco/stomping gospel sound hybrid full of Hammond organ licks, booming bass guitar, piano house riffs and stirring orchestration. In other words, it's another anthem in waiting.

Full of imagery of darkness and light, the song builds to a powerful crescendo at the end. Review: Following a near two-year absence from vinyl, the usually prolific Misha Paniflov is back on Funk Night Records with another nostalgic 45 rooted in deep funk, library music, cinematic soundtracks and psychedelia. The Estonian first offers up 'Dr Juvenal's Solution', a jaunty and genuinely heavy dancefloor work out marked out by sixties spy-movie guitars, bustling breaks, intergalactic synth sounds and warming bass. He opts for a more laidback, downtempo feel on side B, with stretched out, Peter Green style guitar solos and meandering Moog lines reclining atop a bittersweet backing track.

Review: What's important is to spread confusion, not eliminate it: Estonian production master Misha Panfilov knows this as much, running a carefully-curated imagecraft cartel, in which his many aliases confound and bemuse us into believing his many works are the doing of someone else. Case in point: At first glance, we were well-duped into believing Penza Penza were some kind of exotic psych supergroup lost to time, but a deeper investigation as to the origin of the alias indeed reveals the singular force of Panfilov to be the artist behind these tracks. It's no wonder the A-sider is called 'Deep Dive', affirming our propensity for curious, almost forensic suspicion as to its true origins. A serene groove of just-intoned riffs and sizzlingly offbeat hits, this one's certainly a solid accompaniment for your next mescaline dabbling. Meanwhile, we're happy to award the B-sider with "banger of the year so far" - 'My Friend Ash' is an ecstatic mover, as deceivingly retro as it is beguiling, with stabbing counterpoints and wild toppers, as suitable for the club as it is would've been for some kind of 70s hoedown.

Review: Penza Penza is one of many aliases used by funk-fuelled musical polymath Misha Paniflov. This "45" showcases two tracks from the project's recently released debut album, which added heavy funk vibes to a hallucinatory stew of flavoursome psychedelic rock. A-side 'Mad Madis Twist' is gnarly, rugged and impressively heavy, with Paniflov and company wrapping squally, Jimi Hendrix style guitar solos and flanged funk-rock riffs over a cacophonous, all-action rhythm track. 'Shulz' Thing' is a little tighter, more bass-heavy and undeniably funkier, though the wild guitars and acid-fried attitude remain front and centre.

Review: At first an obscure library music curio made by Keith Papworth under the aegis of Music De Wolfe - the brainchild of Dutch composer and oboist Meyer De Wolfe - Hard Hitter long flew under the radar as Papworth's unsung instrumental funk magnum opus, that is, until it was reissued in 2022 by Fat Beats, and again now by Dynamite Cuts. We'd wager that it was the Fat Beats reissue that really cemented the legacy of this gem, which placed its intensely sampleable funk breaks in the context of NYC hip-hop culture, cementing its legacy as a favourite sample source for beatmakers, not just a simple and enduring joy in the realm of hard-hitting library funk.

Review: French label Sky Tings brings the heat with this new 7" from Peter Youthman. His voice is truly unique, with a gnarly style yet soulful edge that gets well treated here and doused in tons of reverb and echo on the a-side joint 'Weh Dem A Go Do'. It's lovers rock but in a digital style, with shiny buffed metal chords and tumbling low-end basslines. It's one of those that could be 50 years old or brand new. On the backside is a 'Do The Dub' which finds some serious knob twiddling going on as the mixing desk becomes an instrument that flips this one into a late-night stoner jam.

Review: Fresh from dropping another essential seven-inch with his regular Sound Combo band, Misha Paniflov has joined forces with fellow multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee for a string of collaborative singles. This "45" sports two genuinely impressive cuts, each full to bursting with quality live instrumentation. It opens with 'Sigmund Jahn Bossa', a superb fusion of late 1960s library jazz (think Roy Budd's score for Get Carter and you're in the right ballpark), bustling bossa-nova and spiralling psych-funk. Over on the flip the pair continue to deliver lounge, influenced, tongue-in-cheek thrills via the cheap, Sideman drum machine rhythms, tumbling guitars, elongated Hammond organ chords and hazy backing vocals of 'Aquaria'.
