Nice Town (2:48)
Nice Town (Metronomy remix) (3:01)
Nice Town (Alain Ogue remix) (4:12)
Review: Metronomy mark their signing to Ninja Tune with a new single that comes not long after their Posse EP Volume 1, a collection of tunes all made in collaboration with up-and-coming artists like Biig Piig, Spill Tab, Sorry, Brian Nasty and Folly Group. This one is another collaboration, this time with Pam Amsterdam. 'Nice Town' deals with the lead singer's own battles such as "internal versus the external or, intangible versus the tangible." It is a delightfully snappy dance-pop ditty with great and tight synth sequences, old-school rap vocals and nice broken early electro beats. Metronomy and Alain Ogue add their own remixes to a great label debut.

Running Out Of Time (Sons dub) (7:30)
Running Out Of Time (Sons Wreck mix) (8:00)
Review: Ian Weatherall and Duncan Gray's Sons Of Slough project has done plenty of tinkering in the intersection between club and dub music, and somewhere between all that Scottish rock perennials Primal Scream often find their own comfortable nook to stretch out. As such, this 12" seems like a natural course of events, even if it came about through the pure whimsy of a day-dreaming muso (Weatherall) wondering what would happen if an obscure bonus track got stripped down and sent through the echo chamber. Bobby Gillespie was into the idea, and this record was the end result. One for all Balearic head nodders and soundsystem meditators alike.

Review: Pearl Jam's latest is an up-tempo rocker with a catchy melody and introspective lyrics about the search for meaning in a dark and uncertain world. Full of imagery of darkness and light, the song builds to a powerful crescendo at the end. The B-side of the single features an instrumental version of the song, is just as powerful as the original, and it gives fans a chance to appreciate the song's intricate musical arrangements. A reminder that Pearl Jam are still one of the most vital and relevant bands in rock music today.

Review: Mumford & Sons drop a surprise single release alongside Pharrell Williams, 'Good People', delivering on a long-awaited promise to hop in the studio together after years of knowing each other. Finally falling back on their immediate instincts, 'Good People' hears the band and the solo wunderkind sing of tiredness and revelation, making adept use of a dry, driving, sportsmanlike instrumental palette (think hand claps, stomps, gospel harmonies). Though cryptic in theme, the mood on this one-off is one of triumph and impending miracle works to come.

Review: For those not in the know, Puscifer is the brainchild of Tool/A Perfect Circle vocalist Maynard James Keenan; an outlier side-project designed as "simply a playground for the various voices in my head, a space with no clear or discernible goals, where my Id, Ego, and Anima all come together to exchange cookie recipes." With each of their four full-lengths to date taking completely different sonic shapes, the release of the project's 2007 debut "V" Is for Vagina perplexed, bemused, enthralled and infuriated fans in equal measure upon its initial release. Bending ambient trip-hop machinations and industrial atmospherics around Keenan's lush croons, and enlisting a frankly obnoxious list of collaborators and co-conspirators such as Tool/Kyuss producer Joe Barresi, Primus drummer Tim Alexander, Alain Johannes and former Dillinger Escape Plan drummer Gil Sharone (to name only a select handful), this reissue welcomes both the devout and unfamiliar to visit Keenan's most artistically unrestrained work in its purest form. If 'Queen B' doesn't put you into a vibe trance, are you even human?

Review: Panda Bear aka. Noah Lennox is best known for his formative membership of experimental pop surrealist troupe, Animal Collective. But the Panda Bear alias itself is nowadays of almost equal stature, similarly blending psychedelia, folk, electronic and ambient influences for further, less-restrained takes on the sound. Here on 'Reset In Dub', Lennox reunites with Peter Kember - a former member of the influential space rock band Spacemen 3 - and legendary dub producer Adrian Sherwood. In dubwise style, Sherwood comes through to remix all nine tracks on Lennox and Kember's prior collaborative LP Reset, amounting to a multi-layered, adventurous retake.

Review: This is the first official vinyl release of the previously CD only collection of Pixies live performances on the BBC. Fans of the band know what a mythical live band the Pixies are. And what better way to experience that emotion then these recordings collected from their earlier years of the late 80s and early 90s? Included are many of the early hits like 'Monkey Gone To Heaven', 'Wave of Mutilation' and 'Allison', mainly from BBC studio sessions and the occasional live recording. 4AD have done an amazing job with this release spreading it across three pieces of vinyl too.

Review: God bless XL Recordings. The UK label has been at the forefront of boundary pushing music since its inception, and almost 35 years remains a seal of quality. A constant source of inspiring surprises and new sonic experiences. The kind of organisation that will take a punt on British polymath Jai Paul's demo album, which, by all accounts, is pretty hard to describe, let alone define. More so, the type of team that would, eight years earlier, support and release one of the artist's earliest songs, 'BTSTU'. Coming full circle, that tune closes this collection of stuff produced around the same time, all of which was going to form the debut album, Bait Ones. One low-quality CD-R of the work stolen and then leaked online later, and the artist stepped away from music until the end of the last decade, when this "perfectly imperfect" LP was finally allowed to see the light of day. A lo fi, glitchy, trippy, granular, sexy sound that owes as much to hip hop, pop and r&b as experimental noise, ambient dub, and electronic soul.

That one got high-profile support across BBC Radio and so she has plenty to live up to but doesn't disappoint here. The majority of the record was written, recorded and produced by the artist herself in her own bedroom. She has clearly attempted to bend and blend genres a little more, tailoring the moods of each song but still keeping to the core big beat elements that define her sound. It is both sunny and optimistic but wrought with the anxieties we all share.

Review: In most cases, a World Of Hassle is certainly not something you want, but we're sure you'll make an exception for this debut solo album by Alan Palomo, best known as the leader of the synth-pop band Neon Indian. Thoroughly on-brand for Palomo, this surprise LP flaunts just ten swanky, funky vocal disco cuts, tinged with the legacy of glam and jazz, and glimmering with the overzealous egoism of history's most volcaninc rockstars. Alan's versatile voice and neon-strobed production skills remaining present as ever, though despite the throughlines, the album marks a departure from his previous work with Neon Indian, which was more experimental and lo-fi.

Review: Neon Indian main brain Alan Palomo returns under his own name for World Of Hassle, the latest full-length project and exploration of a completely different sound altogether. His first album under his own name, it's something of a departure from his previous synthpop/chillwave oeuvre, homing in on a brighter, kookier disco, funk, and house verve. Thematically, the album is adventurous and playful, having been inspired by Palomo's travels around the world, ups-and-downs in the music industry, and personal relationships.

The record was produced by John Kurzweg and managed to achieve Gold status with several singles going on to become hits such as 'Away From Me,' 'Spin You Around,' and 'Heel Over Head.' This reissue features a four page booklet with lyrics and listening to is an immediate ticket back to the turn of the millennium when baggy jeans, over-gelled hair, wallet chains and Etnies were all the rage.

Review: Give Way has all the hallmarks of a collector's item. Originally intended to be given away for free with copies of Pear Jam's 1998 documentary, Single Video Theory, neither label nor band cleared the promotion and so it all went down the drain, with 50,000 copies destroyed a day before the flick hit in one of those How Much Money Did They Have? kind of moments.
25 years on and fans can finally see what they've been missing out on. The record itself is a snapshot of a date at Melbourne Park in Australia, a stop off on the Yield Tour, cutting down the original 25 track show to a shorter playlist, ensuring it can fit on the release. In terms of standards, this gives a strong nod to a peak period in the legacy of this US grunge rock behemoth, and should appease even the most demanding fans.

Review: Is the world ready for the return of Pere Ubu? Does it even matter? What's important is the legendary post-everything provocateurs are back, led by David Thomas and packing a line-up of lifers, long timers and someone Thomas met down the pub. Their last album on Cherry Red was 2019's The Long Goodbye, and yet they're back again with more of their deconstructed but eternally kicking avant-garde rock. There's a comforting familiarity to the angular squall of the guitars, but it's not an album trapped in the past as is evident on the rowdy cover of The Osmonds' 'Crazy Horses'. Genius coming at you from unexpected angles, which is exactly how it should be.

Review: Pearl & The Oysters, made up of duo Juliette Pearl and Joachim Polack, have been described as "Florida's best kept secret," owing to their sweetly unforgettable style of psychedelic indie. With dreamy vocals, catchy melodies, and experimental instrumentation, the duo have been said to channel the influence of classic French composers like Serge Gainsbourg and Michel Legrand into their work, nailing a filmic atmosphere that is otherwise lent to a Mario Kart-esque bedroom pop.

Review: Public Image Ltd. are among the most prominent bands in post-punk, famously sporting ex-Sex Pistol John Lydon, as well as involving key players over the years such as Jah Wobble and Keith Levene. After the passing of Nora Forster, Lydon's wife of more than four decades, PiL's eleventh album End Of World comes as a sudden outpouring of emotion. Lydon's snarling vocals collide with shades of experimental rock and electronica, making for bleak visions of a world plunged into grief. There are new songs, like 'Penge' - their ill fated Eurovision bid - and 'Hawaii', blended with reworkings of older classics. The band elsewhere redirect their angst to concern over the state of the world. It's apt, given that they already came up musically during a time of deep discontent long ago, so we're more than happy to hear them impart their wisdom in album form for today's madness.

Review: No one really expected Public Image Limited to return to the fray with a fully-fledged new album, but life has a funny way of steering the ship. As John Lydon reacted with raw honesty to his experience caring for his wife Nora, they released the heartfelt single 'Hawaii' and in April she passed on. Now the full album is coming, loaded with that poignant meaning and adding such weight to the return of one of the enduring groups of the post-punk era. There's a follow-up single 'Penge', described by Lydon as "something of a medieval Viking epic", and an album bursting with PiL's verve and subversion, but also added compassion and reflection.

Review: Dark Entries joins forces with Papi Juice Records for No Jack Swing, a new and fantastic solo electronic debut from Oakland-based Brontez Purnell. The Southern-raised musician centres his queerness and Blackness in his work, most notably his Gravy Train and Younger Lovers projects as well as with award-winning books 100 Boyfriends and Since I Laid My Burden Down. Here he focuses on the amen-break of the 808 and on that foundation uses a collage of found sound materials to build a vibe. Bedroom instrumentals, poems from boys in France and childhood gospel tapes are all drawn upon to make for a lived-up, autobiographical sound produced by Nightfeelings.

Review: The Postal Service are one of those anomalies of indie-pop which left an impression far bigger than their actual output. Formed as a sort of side-project for Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard, Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis and Dntel, their sole album Give Up was a widely hailed masterpiece of modernist synth-pop. The slow release success of the 2002 album moved the band to embark on a tour 10 years later, which was then captured on this live album as a gift to the fans who never made the shows. As treasured by their fans as the studio recordings, Everything Will Change now receives a ceremonious double-vinyl repress on pink and blue vinyl cutely titled the 'Loser Edition'.

Review: A one-of-a-kind record from a one-in-a-million "state-of-mind jam band", Upstate by Prison hears five guys, four vocals and three guitars melded together in a craft that runs on its own rock & roll synergy. A self-perpetual psychosonic release, the LP consists only of five 15 to 20-minute long jam pieces, all of which seem to endlessly revel in caterwauling, hooting, Wahhing, and droning, ultimately beating the horse of contemplative psychedelia to death until both a heightened state of consciousness and a renewed music-making praxis is achieved. Sure, it goes too far! How the hell else you gonna get Upstate?

Review: Almost two full decades into their curious career, slacker-psych experimentalists The Pheromoans have never been ones to shy away from the esoteric or mundane. Led by the droll, deadpan delivery and unique world view of primary songwriter Russell Walker, LP number 13 sees the collective lean ever further into topical malaise whilst honing their fuzzed out, post-college-rock jangles into their most digestible and direct form yet. With the title Wyrd Psearch, Walker takes direct aim "at the ubiquity of people claiming things are eerie or weird/wyrd in the present cultural milieu", while the word-search artwork is intended to highlight our cultures' obsessive search for meaning in an increasingly illogical world. Twinkling no wave riffs, glistening synth lines and muted requests to loved ones requesting their presence on a trip to town to reup on prescription meds.

Review: Formed in 2011 and led by the whimsical penmanship of Philip Sutton (Comet Gain), Pale Light are a criminally overlooked, often slept on indie/folk-pop gem that released a pair of cracking albums in the early 2010s. Often forgotten, however, are the slew of smaller singles (including a self-released 7", CDEP and two digital EPs, as well as a split 7" with Lake Ruth and a coveted spot in Slumberland's 30th anniversary 7" series) which have now all been compiled by the lovely folks over at Jigsaw Records onto one definitive collection of underappreciated beauty. While Sutton keeps busy with his Love, Burns. solo project (also signed to Jigsaw), the label's evident excitement at helping to distribute the songsmiths' expansive catalogue has also led to the muted confirmation that a new Pale Light mini-LP is currently in the works, positioning Waverly Place as the ideal form of prep material.

Review: Georgian pioneer George Dzodzuashvili has been away for eight years but now makes a triumphant if not overdue return as Post Industrial Boys. The record on Casa Voyager finds him tapping into his most personal work yet as he opens up a whole new musical universe that is packed with memories of yesteryear. Even though you didn't experience them, they feel so real here as they are bought to life by Dzodzuashvili with his slow motion dub grooves and wispy melodies. The spoken word snippets and whispered poems all conjure up rich feelings that warm you to your core and help you forget the grown up world around you.

Review: Fabiana Palladino's long-awaited debut album brings plenty of smooth and high gloss sound back to the fore. Following the end of a significant relationship, Palladino uses the album to delve into themes of love, loneliness, and relationship norms and in the process crafts a ten-track album that superbly blends r&b, soul, pop, and disco influences from the 80s and 90s with a contemporary twist. Self-produced and featuring collaborations with notable musicians like Jai Paul, Pino Palladino, Rocco Palladino, Steve Ferrone, and Rob Moose, the album is a classy journey through shapeshifting sonics and intimate introspection, marking a significant milestone in Palladino's musical journey.

Review: Build Something Better by Grace Petrie, produced by Frank Turner, is a powerful statement on contemporary societal inequalities and injustices. With a blend of punk-folk elements, Grace's acoustic guitar and vocals shine, supported by Ben Moss' captivating fiddle playing and Stuart Proven's excellent drumming. The album tackles themes of alienation, political disillusionment, and the struggle for truth in a post-truth world. Tracks like 'The House Always Wins' and 'Meanwhile In Texas' confront hard-hitting issues with poignant lyrics and infectious musical patterns. Grace's songwriting ability shines through in tracks like 'King And Country' and 'Earthwire,' where personal relationships intertwine with broader social commentary. The album culminates in the title track, 'Fixer Upper,' offering hope amidst the existential threat of global crises. Overall, Build Something Better is a musically rich and lyrically profound album.

With this release, the duo continues to push on and blend elements of indie rock, psychedelia, and electronica into something wholly new that ranges from infectious hooks to experimental textures. Review: Phosphorescent is recognised as something of a key player in the current indie scene. Based right now in Nashville, Tennessee, he has been away for the best part of half a decade but now makes a sweet return much to the delight of fans and critics alike. Back in 2022 his covers album Full Moon Project showcased all of his most prominent inspirations and influences with versions of music by the likes of Bee Gees, Bob Dylan and Nina Simone. The self-taught producer and a constantly inquisitive creative now goes deep on new record Revelator which is "a meditation on all that he's learned about life and all that is still unknown".

Review: Perennially indie-dance favs Primal Scream might be best known for albums like the seminal Screamadelica but did you know they wrote an album that never was? Reverberations (Travelling In Time)' is just that - a debut that wasn't a debut. It lasts just 35 minutes but has 16 perfectly formed pop tunes on it, 11 of them previously unreleased BBC session recordings, and the final five are tunes from their earliest singles on Creation Records. Here the record is pressed up on translucent blue vinyl in limited quantities and includes newly commissioned artwork and a large format booklet with extra context.

Review: Reverberations (Travelling In Time) is the debut Primal Scream album that never was: 16 perfectly formed pop nuggets weighing in at just under 35 minutes. Boasting eleven previously unreleased BBC session recordings plus all five songs from the band's first two Creation Records singles, Reverberations (Travelling In Time) perfectly captures what many believe to be a crucial era for one of the UK's most important groups as they went on to influence a wave of emerging bands, most notably The Stone Roses. It's a collection which provides a snapshot of the youthful innocence and uninhibited passion that characterised their early two-minute indie-pop adventures.

The title 'exQuisxx'is a coined term that merges the French word "exquis", signifying something delightful and lovely, with 'xx' denoting a kiss. That in mind, we hear a reissued incarnation of the artist's best works here, which have resurfaced after a newfound popularity sparked by her recent acknowledgement by British singer-songwriter Arlo Parks. Ambient trip-hop; French pop; wavering glitch and electro experiments. Not one to be missed at all.

Review: 4AD turn back the clock to take a look at Pale Saints' breakthrough album, In Ribbons. Striking a note between the prevalent shoegaze of the era and 4ADs earlier ethereal sound, this is a record which absolutely conjures a specific moment in time and yet has aged very well. In the bittersweet pop nous of tracks like 'Thread Of Light' you can hear contemporaries like Lush, but equally Meriel Barham's vocal delivery reaches through time and lands with as much conviction now as it did back then. With a smart balance between bruising riffs and dreamy atmospherics, In Ribbons sounds in rude health on this remastered, commemorative edition and any shoegaze or early indie fan should be all over it.

Review: In the wave of shoegaze bands in the early 90s, Pale Saints aren't mentioned as much as they should be. It might be because their sound balanced the trademark wall of sound approach with a certain ethereal delicacy which aligned more with the likes of Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil. It's no wonder they were signed to 4AD and now the label are reissuing their second album In Ribbons 30 years after its original release. The record has lost none of its impact, navigating between noisy peaks and fragile troughs with grace and wrapped up in a pop nous which remains enchanting now, three decades later.

Review: Pale Saints' breakthrough album, In Ribbons, turns 30 years old this year and so the label that first put it out is looking back with this superb new anniversary edition. The album was a key driver in the shoegaze scene and became much loved for its ethereal sound. That has aged well here with bittersweet pop in tracks like 'Thread Of Light' as Meriel Barham's vocal delivery reaches through time and still hits the mark today. Musically the record blends bruising riffs and dreamy atmospherics and has been freshly remastered for this special commemorative CD edition which should appeal to fans old and new.

Review: Originally from Australia, now based in Berlin, Parcels are the consummate live disco-house band. In the past four years they've demonstrated that on their studio recordings, but they're the kind of outfit which really make sense on the stage, as all the players vibe off each other and the crowd in pursuit of dancefloor perfection. After their widely celebrated first live album back in 2020, they're back with another volume which captures the set they've been playing out in more recent times. If you need an instant portal to peak-time, glittery festival magic, this live album is your dream ticket.

Review: Matador Records top up their ongoing catalogue series Revisionist History - a series of reissues of the label's most esteemed albums, which "people tend to presume is our cheeky way of re-writing Matador's storied past to make it even more (ahem) storied" - with a new version of The New Romance by Pretty Girls Make Graves. Formed in Seattle in 2001, PGMG came together in the fallout of the breakup of a dozen other Seattle scene bands, and amounted to an intelligent and distinctively electric take on the post-punk they knew and loved. The second LP to their debut Good Health, The New Romance was anthemic in comparison to their debut's relative rawness, working in crossrhythmic guitar and synth arpeggios touching on minimalism, which formed a neat counterpart to the ostensibly screamy punk statement heard throughout.

Review: Brendan Perry of Dead Can Dance hears his 1999 album Eye of the Hunter expanded for a first-time repress, to now include a bonus live album Live at the ICA, recorded during 4AD's infamous 13 Year Itch residency at the storied London venue in 1993. Channelling his infamous gestalt-gargantuan folk sound that he so trailblazed with his partner Lisa Gerrard with DCD, the newly unearthed live material is just as arresting as the original solo album; whether its recording at the Quivvy Church in Ireland or the ICA in London, the overall effect - that of Perry's dark folk wonderment, mythological themes, and reverb-laden 4AD sound - is the same.

Review: You don't have to spend long looking at the cover art for Plantoid's Terrapath to have a stab at guessing what the record is all about. The oil painting-style image is at once retro and futuristic, invoking thoughts of H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds and John Wyndham's Day of the Triffids, among other classic science fiction works. We couldn't ask for a more apt visualisation of the record itself. Terms like 'prog rock jazz' may not be particularly flattering today, but here Plantoid prove there's plenty of life left in the (sub) genre yet, especially when you throw funk, soul, and subtle hints of downbeat into the mix. Terrapath is at times fragile and gentile, in other moments rowdy and brash, and it never, ever feels like it could do with seven or eight minutes shaving off a track. A wonderfully conceived collection you'll be coming back to again, and again.
