Deep House
2DeepSoul - "Home"
Owen Jay & Melchior Sultana - "Deserted"
Review: We can't remember the last time we came across a 7" single of straight-up deep house. Certainly, it's a novelty, though there's little novel or cheeky about the two tracks showcased on this diddy, coloured vinyl release from Spain's Minuendo label. 2DeepSoul's A-side, "Home", is effortlessly melodious - a warm, rich and enticing blend of shuffling rhythms, swirling chords and the kind of blissfully electronic melodies that make you want to dance with your eyes shut. There's a more organic and quietly soulful feel about Owen Jay and Melchior Sultana's flipside effort, "Deserted". Blessed with a delicious double bass line, bespoke keys and a whisper of Motor City techno (in terms of the electronics, at least), it's a sublime chunk of sensual deepness.

Azimuth - "Manha" (3:45)
Osmar Milito E Quarteto Forma - "America Latina" (2:46)
Review: A tale of two sides, Azimuth's classic "Manha" should be recognisable to many; taken from their self-titled LP in 1975, its golden harmonies and lavish, lolloping Bob James style jazz are as timeless as they were 40 years ago. Flip for "America Latina". Conjured by prolific collaborator Osmar Milito (whose discography features the likes of Sammy Davis Jr, Spanky Wilson and Liza Minelli), its striking, sing-along charms are no accident... It was actually created for 70s Brazilian soap opera Selva De Pedra.

Babe Ruth - "The Mexican" (Mr Fantastic edit) (3:37)
Organised Konfusion - "Prisoners Of War" (4:35)
Review: Consistently on-point and expertly dug, Originals continue to join the dots with creativity. Here we rewind to 1973 for Babe Ruth's biggest cut "The Mexican". Its lolloping, rolling bassline and spacious drums have been sampled by many but Organised Konfusion's use is definitely one of the best. Needle down and listen as Prince Po and Pharoahe Monche lay down lucid 1991 flows with a serious political agenda that's still just as resonant today. Timeless on both sides.

Ain't No Stopping Us Now (3:03)
Review: Second time around for Banda Achilifunk and Original Jazz Orquestra's sought-after 2011 cover of disco classic "I Believe in Miracles", original copies of which now change hands for serious sums online. The expansive Spanish crew's baggy, sun-kissed and rumba-soaked Latin disco cover of the Jackson Sisters' classic is perfectly pitched, adding layers of crunchy Clavinets and punchy horns to a sumptuously summery groove. Over on the flip we get two different takes on McFadden & Whitehead classic "Ain't No Stopping Us Now": a decidedly Balearic Spanish language cover ("No Nos Pararas"), and an instrumental cover full to bursting with superb grooves and even more scintillating horn solos.

No Nos Pararan (6:48)
Review: In 2011, Banda Achilifunk & OJO served up Gitano Real, one of the year's most essential albums. It was caned far and wide by funk lovers, in particular Craig Charles on his 6 Music show. Now, two cover versions taken from the essential album have been pressed to limited edition translucent yellow vinyl. First up, 'I Believe in Miracles' is an overwhelming take on the Jackson Sisters classic with plenty of happy Latin vibes and rumba funk rhythms. Flip it over for a more abstract version of McFadden and Whitehead's seminal 'Ain't No Stoping Us Now' which is a soulful disco number packed with sunshine.

Review: If we said 'a Latin funk cover of Michael Jackson's "Bad"' what would you say? If the answer is anything other than 'WTF? I need that in my life' we are officially worried about you. Who wouldn't want that? Not to let the cheeky b-side outshine the A, "Feelings" is a Banda Achilifunk original; rolling with a rhythm n' blues motif and some fly Spanish lyrics, it's feel good party joint with heaps of distinction.

Time After Time (4:48)
Review: ,Joe Bataan has been busy in East L.A. with Orquesta Rene for this new Latin jazz double 7" courtesy of Steady Beat. It features four all new pieces drenched in soul and percussion, starting with 'So Fine' (feat Big Sandy), a mid tempo groove with vocal longing and languid horns. 'Mestizo' is a more steamy and intimate piece with sung-spoken lyrics and glowing, golden chords. 'Mom & Dad' (feat Claudia Lennear) has s steamy shuffle to its rhythms and classic Latin percussive sounds next to a call and response vocal and 'Time After Time' closes with a sentimental feel.

Al Campbell - "No Entry" (3:47)
Observer All Stars - "Gate To The City" (3:50)
Review: Alphonso 'Al' Campbell was one of the first generation of dancehall artists. The 70s in Jamaica were denied by his albums. There were no fewer than 35, in fact, on a range of key labels. His 'No Entry' remains a perrenial favourite and in 2005 was pressed to its own 45rpm. The same label, Observer, now restocks it with a fine dub on the flip from Observer All Stars. 'No Entry' is a dark and heavy dub with lurching bass and dread in the chords. The vocals are pained, too, making for a still futuristic sounding cut. The version on the flip, 'Gate To The City,' is more melodic and spaced out.

Let's Run Away From The World (3:15)
Review: Tramp Records has a good relationship with obscure Illinois soul man Wayne Carter. Back in 2013 they put out a compilation of his near impossible-to-find singles and here reissue arguably his most rare and sought-after 45 (for proof, check how much original private press copies change hands for online). With its meandering Hammond organ solos, heavyweight rhythm section, fuzzy horns and impassioned vocals, "Peter In Or Out" is a genuine deep funk bomb. On the flip you'll find the more laidback and groovy "Let's Run Away From The World", in which backing band the Organ Twisters provide a fitting backing for Carter's impassioned plea to a lover to "at last be free".

Chakachas - "Stories"
Open Sky Unit - "Sunshine Star"
Review: Across two LPs and seven 7"s issued this week the Funky Chicken series looks to bring together some of the best dance music to have surfaced from Belgium throughout the early 1970s. Overall it's a compelling selection to work through, and where better to start than this inaugural seven which features tracks from Chakachas and Open Sky Unit. The label states virtually every music wave passed through Belgium in this period, and the two tracks here provide compelling evidence with "Stories" by Chakachas a perfect example of the long running group's mastery of Latin-tinged soul and funk. On the flip is the supple psyche funk of "Sunshine Star" by Open Sky Unit which has been something of a hidden compilation gem for a while (it featured on the ace Broad Casting comp by Karen P for Sonar Kollektiv a few years ago) and still sounds sublime.

Review: For those in the know, this new collab between veteran Portuguese DJ and producer Dedy Dread and fast-rising Hawaiian singing star Olivia Ruff has been a long time coming. But it was worth the wait. The opener 'Cover Me' features Ruff's, well, slightly rough - or at least gravelly - vocals over a rhythm and bass instrumental. Review: George Dekker was a founding member of The Pioneers, a hit reggae group who'd plenty of UK chart success with big tunes like 'Long Shot Kick de Bucket,' 'Let Your Yeah be Yeah' and 'Sweet Inspiration'. Here, for a special Record Store Day 20210 release, we get a remake of 1968 tunes 'Nana.' It first came on the Trojan label and is a highly sought after original that fetches plenty. It's a super sweet tune with lazy horns and a swaggering riddim. On the backside is a version with MC the Oxman and legendary Studio One and Bob Marley trombonist Vin Gordon. This one is a sympathetic version that only tweaks the signal a little.

Review: The nucleus of the dirrty south, and the birthplace of trap, Atlanta has more to offer than sleazy, grinding 808s. As proved by this fantastic dubby disco 7 from Smokecloud. Applejuice takes a well known Etta James sample (previously used by Pretty Lights and pilfered by Flo Rida) and massages it into a much smokier, trip-hop template while Osmose dubs out a vibrant Silver Convention string hook, drops the tempo and adds a whole bucket of low-end. Their catalogue has been pillaged here by the always-on-point Belgian label Roots Vibration, and they have come up with their 'Obeah Book' tune for reissue on this 45rpm. Review: Patrick Gibin has signed some terrific records to his Mother Tongue label, so it's no surprise to discover that the Italian imprint's first "45" is a bona fide stunner. It sees sometime Gustosa producer Gary Superfly join forces with Other Lands (AKA Gavin Sunderland, previously best known for his work as Fudge Fingaz) to offer up the kind of sumptuously warm, languid, loose, toasty and organic fare that can't quite decide whether it wants to be jazz-funk, modern boogie or especially hazy deep house. A-side "Endless" is particularly potent, with waves of kaleidoscopic synth sounds and twinkling Rhodes solos relaxing over a chunky bassline and head-nodding drums, though toastier and hazier flipside "Purple" is almost as good.

Her first single in over two years, it translates to 'Butterfly' and is another collaboration. This time with fellow Korean sensation OHHYUK who is the lead singer and guitarist in the band Hyukoh. He reached number five in the UK charts with it and number two in the USA, and it was said to have only taken 10 days to write, record and release it at the start of 1970. It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that Luis snapped up this vibrant South American cover of the Kaiser Chiefs' "I Predict A Riot" by Brazilian MPB revivalists Carolina Lins and Os Plantos. It's truly brilliant, with Lins' bold Portuguese vocal simply soaring over the band's samba-soul groove and fuzzy horn lines. As cover versions go, it's a bit of a doozy.

This volume takes a slightly different approach, instead delivering killer cuts from two different artists, both of whom hail from the North of Brazil. On side A you'll find Magalhaes' 1986 gem 'Xangos', a cheery and energetic Lambada workout rich in jangling guitars, shuffling percussion, ear-catching vocals and restless bass. On the reverse Os Panteros takes over with 1987 jam 'Lambada Pauleira', a quirky chunk of Lambada full of fuzzy synths, infectious percussion and lo-fi guitar licks. The cut was famously re-edited some time back by Joutro Mondo, though this original version is - in our opinion - far superior.

Born To Live (vocal) (4:05)
Born To Live (instrumental) (4:03)
Review: Some more classic hip-hop action on the cheekily-named Old Chilin' label, this time courtesy of D.I.T.C crew member Omar Credle AKA O.C. Many fans of golden-era hip-hop may already be familiar with 1994 gem 'Born To Live', a Buckwild-produced jam that also features vocal contributions from Pharoahe Monch and Roc Raida. The full vocal version - or at least the "Rap Edit" version prepared for radio stations - resides on the A side and sees Credle spitting atmospheric, largely positive rhymes atop a snappy, head-nodding beat, deep bass and some deliciously jazzy instrumental samples. The quality of Buckwild's production, and the weightiness of the beats in particular, can be further enjoyed on the flipside instrumental take.

OC - "Time's Up" (3:26)
Les Demerle - "A Day In The Life" (4:25)
Review: You can always rely on 5 Borough Breaks for some top shelf hip hop. The label's latest missive is a legendary one from O.C. - "Time's Up" is a rousing, hard hitting beat with an even tougher verse that rides on the booming kicks. It also samples Les DeMerle's "A Day In The Life" which just so happens to be pressed on the flip and yes, it is in fact a cover of The Beatles. Here though, it becomes a stirring big bang jazz cut that forms an impressive wall of retro sound that will inject realness and rawness into any party. Like always with this label, quantities are limited so move fast to get your fix.

Review: The latest release from Brooklyn's Wonderwheel label sees the return of Ocote Soul Sounds, the long-running collaboration between Antibalas founder Martin Pera and Adrian Quesada, co-founder of the Latin music powerhouse Grupo Fantasma. A Pesar La Vida is actually their debut for Wonderwheel and a fine 7" to boot, with Ocote Soul Sounds calling on the talents of Chico Mann and Quantic to make it all the more special. Naturally "A Pesar La Vida" sees Mann step up for lead vocals, ably assisted by the backing singers, whilst Will Quantic's enviable musicianship comes to the fore on guitar and accordion. Some beat on the cut too! Instrumental on the flip!

Odetta - "Hit Or Miss"
Bo Diddley - "Hit Or Miss"
Review: Two hugely historic versions from Adidas's high-schooling Originals imprint. Odetta's 1970 original is a beautifully sexy, smouldering piece of smoky blues while Bo Diddley's cover (that came four years later) is much more upbeat and funk focussed with added horns and head-turning bass runs. Both have inspired every generation that's followed and have undergone myriad sample treatments. Return to the source and understand just why they've been so influential.

Our Lives Are Shaped By What We Love (3:38)
Battened Ships (2:59)
Review: Odyssey hear a fresh reissue on Soul Brother with 'Our Lives Are Shaped By What We Love', a spiritual soul number detailing an early intimation of the law of attraction. One of the less obscure reissues to come to Soul Brother, Odyssey originally formed in 1968 as a family trio in New York, but later continued in many alternate forms. The lead single from their self-titled 70s album, the song asks the listener, "where are you today? do you know your way? are you searching for mountains lost?", against a twanging, almost new-agey soul backdrop, before reminding us of an utmost-important axiom: follow your heart.

It's On (dance mix version) (5:06)
Review: Gustavo C's G.U.S label - short for 'Golden Unreleased Songs' - exists for one purpose: to offer-up limited-edition singles featuring previously unheard gems from the disco and boogie era. The label has already released buried treasure from Central Line and Kenni Rightout and here delves into the archives of obscure 80s electrofunk outfit Odyssey & Co, a band not to be confused with the far better-known Odyssey. 'It's On' was originally recorded and mixed in 1983, but for one reason or another never hit stores. It's a quality slab of soul-fired boogie-funk rich in rubbery bass guitar, spacey synths, eyes-closed vocals and post-electro machine drums. The A-side original mix is on-point, but we prefer the slightly stretched out and more dancefloor focused flip-side 'Dance Mix'.

A Love Affair (4:42)
I Love You So (4:40)
Review: If you're a fan of the glossy "City Pop" sounds that emerged from Japan in the early 1980s - a particularly gorgeous, neon-lit version of synth-pop that drew on many US soul, jazz-funk and boogie influences - then you need this "45" in your life. Both of the tracks were recorded by Junko Ohashi at different points in the early '80s but are famous for appearing on her now highly sought-after 1984 compilation Magical, which the cover art mimics. A-side 'A Love Affair' is the undoubted pick of the pair: a smooth, multi-coloured concoction that sees Ohashi singing sweetly over a blend of squelchy synth-bass, fretless bass, sparkling synthesizer chords, electrofunk flourishes, Teena Marie style Latin horns and cracking drum machine beats.

In Your Lovin' (4:53)
Review: Blissful boogie reissue from Junko Ohashi, whose 7-inch promo for 'Dancin' here functioned as the promo material for the 1983 album 'Point Zero'. Sounding just as rough, farty and raw as its original LP cut, the track is a perfect example of what Japan brought to disco - blending it largely with city pop - at the time. 'In Your Lovin', as it did on the original album, brings up the B-side with a downer-tempo funk beat, and a lyrical subject dealing with a romanticized, ideal lover.

Review: Japanese city pop specialist Ohashi Junko was a towering figure from the mid -70s onwards. She was hugely prolific and put out around 15 studio full-lengths that often did very well. Amongst her vast arsenal of hits she also served up this tidy two-tracker which features one single that was only previously available on CD and one off her 1974 album Feeling Now (First Album). Both are soul-drenched nuggets with glistening city-pop production, carefree vocals and silky synth sounds that still have a future sound.

Review: Alogte Oho & His Sounds of Joy's debut album Mam Yinne Wa was a real triumph. A sensuous fusion of international rhythms, gospel vocals and jubilant vibes that was an instant hit with lovers of world music. His new single is said to be a teaser for a seance upcoming album and is another masterpiece from Frafra Gospe, a legend of this genre. First up is 'Doose Mam,' a repetitive rhythm that goes right for the hips. The big horns bring the character and sensuous vocals are the icing on the cake. On the flip is 'Gure Yose Me,' a tune rooted in reggae rhythms thanks to the work of Josie Coppola, Europe's No.1 reggae drummer.

Review: Frafra gospel artist Alogte Oho was rumoured to be a leading artist within the 'explosive' music scene of Bolgatanga, in Northern Ghana. His debut release "Zota Yinne" in 2014 has already become a collectors item. On this release, Oho is joined by the all female choir group Sounds of Joy, comprised of Lizzy Amaliyenga, Patricia Adongo and Florence Adooni. On the A side, we have the uplifting and soulful vibes of "Mam Yinne Wa" featuring some wonderful wind and string instrument passages. On the flip is the reggae influenced swagger of "Yu Ya Yumma".
