Review: OHM is quickly becoming a quality imprint you can count on for techno and dub techno. The ninth addition in the series, it calls for an excellent blend of composers to balance this EP out. Veteran Jamie Anderson collabs with the brilliant Owain K on opener. The 'Aqua Dub' builds a euphoria for late night smiles. Smooth is an understatement on this linear gem. One artist on here that's been making strong appearances on many dub techno labels is the ever-talented Francisco Aguado. 'Balance' is a great tribal transition track for any DJ who can it creatively to build the means to an end. On the second side, Star Dub offers the very addictive and techy 'Forst'. Ending on a high note, the brisk and flighty 'Ever Growing' by Volpe completes the ninth edition in a rapturous mood. If you like deep techno, the OHM series is a must to collect.

Review: DJ Crisps is starting to make some handy garage moves after a couple of various artists' appearances and a fine EP on Time Is Now Germany in July. Now they link up with Oldboy who appeared on Burnski's other label Vivid back in 2022. As you should expect these are four hardcore and rudely garage cuts with plenty of swagger, naughty samples and bass-face potential. 'On My Way' is the standout with its shuffling one-two drum punch, distant police sirens and warped basslines underneath a timeless and irresistible female vocal full of soul. A summer scorcher for sure alongside three more very useful weapons.

Review: The Ethiopians were a big part of the 70s roots and reggae scene. Their catalogue has been pillaged here by the always-on-point Belgian label Roots Vibration, and they have come up with their 'Obeah Book' tune for reissue on this 45rpm. It was produced by Niney The Observer and is a deep steady and rolling rhythm that has some nice and playful piano up top, but the icing on the cake is the heartfelt vocals. On the back, Observer goes it alone with 'Back Weh', a nice head-twisting dub.

Review: For more than 20 years Ashley Burchett has been pushing the envelope of no-nonsense techno as O [Phase] and he's been sounding more inspired than ever since launching his own Modwerks label back in 2021. Following up on some sterling releases from Saag and Tora Katsuta, now Burchett takes the reins himself for four steadfast building blocks in your game of techno Jenga. 'Merchant' is tightly wound, razor-sharp and looped-up to perfection, while 'Edge Runner' locks into some hi-octane machine funk. 'Plot Twist' keeps just a touch of swing in the mix and capitalises on hand claps and acid tweaks before 'Guess Work' ratchets down a lead-heavy low-end groove that could move mountains.

Review: The left of centre musical universe of Crosstown Rebels ushers in this lively new EP from Oceanvs Orientalis. 'Neutrality' features on the A-side and is a spiritual fusion of steely tech house beats and spine tingling chords, angelic distant vocals and lots of loose percussion all with a slightly psychedelic feel. On the flip is a Nick Curly remix which pairs whitings back and settles the beats into one of his signature tech house frameworks with hooky little pads and late night allure. Good stuff.

Exploring some different avenues in the last decade, the label recently launched a series of heavy dub techno related records identified as DUBWARS. Volume two features four different artists this time with each submitting a new piece to the label focus. Fans of Basic Channel's 'Phylyps Trak' should quickly head to OFF/GRID - 'One Stab Ahead' for that main room filler. Gunjack's 'Memory Man' is another upbeat killer in its own right adding a bit of acid along with the melodic chord progression. Review: If you're looking for fresh sonic experiments which nonetheless hold fast to the dancefloor-worthiness of contemporary European techno, look no further than Rotterdam's Arts collective. Flaunting their selective prowess, the label here present a four-track release from producer Off/Grid, who impressively nails that coveted sonic tension many producers can only grasp after; a sound suspended between dreaminess and forcefulness, a mesmeric militant fist that first packs a punch, but then unclenches to sprinkle magical sand in our eyes. 'Strobe Light Memories' pins this down best; a behemoth of a beat jostles for the attention of our ears, all front-and-centre, only to give way to a cosmically faint breakdown, before returning once again.

Review: Sheffield-based experimental label Another Timbre is reissuing some of their most sought-after CDs, starting with this collaboration between Berlin-based Japanese composer and reeds player Michiko Ogawa and cellist, composer and noted classical-electronic fusionist Lucy Railton. Designed as an exercise in creating musical magic using just three musical elements - cello, organ and sho (a Japanese reed instrument) - Fragments of Reincarnation is an evocative, atmospheric and at times hypnotic piece that sits somewhere between cutting-edge modern classical, ambient and immersive sound design. Review: The Dutch folks at Kalahari Oyster Cult sure like to serve up music that melts minds at 5 am, or they do if this new one from Olsvanger is anything to go by. It is a futuristic techno exploration with 'Grand Slamming' opening up with a mix of sleek linear drums, pulsing sonar synths and supersized hi-hats that bring the energy. 'Paranoweed' is a pure and unadulterated looper that undulates with a subtle funk and 'Bubble Toy' brings some deft sound designs and minimal synths to sci-fi effects and more sweet rolling beats. 'Quadi B' closes out and sounds like a tense and paranoid underwater search for malevolent aquatic life forms.

Review: Orli is back with what we think is a first EP in almost a year but it was worth the wait for minimal fans: the three originals on Scandal for the Daro label all hit a perfect sweet spot between abstraction and club clout. 'Where Is Your Identity' layers up bleeping phone tones and spoken word snippets with crisp and snappy tech house drums. 'Scandal' is deep, loopy and long legged though packed with subtle cosmic details and then comes a deft minimal rework from Dan Andrei's Diminished Horror remix. Review: Argentina's Oscean land on Tresor with their latest effort 'Chromium Radiance', a quartet of sonorous, slowly orbiting tracks for the outer reaches. The EP feels deeply at home on Tresor, whose back catalogue it effortlessly channels while navigating the newer more elastic pathways in techno laid by artists such as Mark Fell & Gabor Lazar. The first track is a pensive, nervous sketch for the more introspective hours of the morning, with reese-like pads hanging heavy over skittering grooves, while the second, 'Neon Harmonies' is a perfect accompaniment to watching rain cascade down neon-lit panes, with heartstring-plucking pads and propulsive, SVN-esque subs. 'Blaster Imploder' throws it back with a spell of ruthless hydraulic electro jakk, before 'Echoes Of Chaos' closes things out with a twitchy, haywire big room techno energy calling to mind Regis' early slammers. Review: Tel Aviv's Elado has put out a fine run of eight releases in just two years on the likes of GAMM, Barefoot Beats and Bonfido Disques, but for his next move, he branches out with his own reissue label. its aim is to "focus on uncovering lost gems" with the original paired with his own remixes. The first one is a 1983 private press from the Canadian pair OUI. 'Circle Of Love' is a big disco banger with flashy synth work and rugged arps, with a pair of Elado's mixes making it even more dancefloor ready. 'You Make Me High' is a more sentimental 80s pop sound.The release has recieved support from a lot of artist, such as Gerd Jansen and Hunee. A fine start to life for this new label.

Review: John Devecchi's AKA The Owl takes flight once again here on his self titled label's tenth outing. Once again it is a head turning mix of disco and funk that carries on where his superb Concrete Funk album from 2021 left off. These are beefy cuts with authentic grooves, starting with the loose limbed playfulness of 'Shake It'. There is a more heavy, purposeful chug to 'Follow Me' which comes alive with lush strings and perfect soul vocals. 'Always Be There' leans into a house groove with noodling guitar riffs a la Chic and 'The Way' is a nice leggy and elastic pumper with expressive diva wails. Super stuff.

Review: One Eye Witness is mostly known for doing reissues of treasured 90s breakbeat, techno and trance under the name Kalahari Oyster Cult but this outlet under their name is for new music. Similar to the previous, the fifth edition is a compilation with submissions from different artists around the world. Starting out the EP is the Montreal producer Priori with the very atmospheric 'Weight'. Those who follow the label, know that every release will get a bit of trance and sure enough, Eversines deliver with wicked 'Vigilance'. For the second side, the 'Bustlin' Monk' by O Fourtyfour, bounces along with a trippy, broken, electro groove. Lastly, 'J2PX' by Reflex Blue is a sick, robotic funker that we expect to get a lot of attention by those who get this record. You can always expect some excellent music from One Eye Witness.

Review: UKJ keeps the flame of old-school breaks and jungle afire with its latest four-track V/A 12", with contributions from label co-boss Junglord, Supa Ape, Sully, OmniRhythm and Simply Dread all in tow for the inflammatory sacrifice. Unlike your usual jungle, these four cuts verge on the insane, thanks to this label's commemorative grounding in the earliest days of jungle in its hardcore breaks and graff-adjacent days. We wager that back then, there was more room for experimentation before the "sound" got standardised and fetishised. Here's a cogent recollection of that time - a time of vocal one-shots, dramatic classical music samples and rave stabs, sure - but above all, just a generally wilder and more rapacious indulging of the promise of what was once called breakscience; Junglord's 'Ready For Retaliation' and Dread's 'Hard To Tell' tend towards UK hardcore on this front, ultrafast breaks-drilling and buzzsawing away, with glee.

Review: Another case of second time around, this time for the final Creation Records release from Oasis, a collection of B-sides that returns in freshly remastered form. While not all bands could get away with this kind of exercise, the Mancunian Britpop heroes released enough memorable bonus cuts to make it a worthwhile and entertaining exercise. For proof, check the densely layered, riff-driven yelp of 'Acquiesce', the wistful 'Talk Tonight' and 'Half The World Away', the brass band-sporting Beatles-in-1966 shuffle of 'Going Nowhere', the sing-along fun of 'Stay Young', and the band's triumphant, six-and-a-half minute live cover of 'I Am The Walrus' - arguably their best "flipside" of all.
