We Can't Live Like This Anymore (7:31)
Review: Originally recorded in the late 1970s and using many of the musicians employed by Diana Ross on her track 'The Boss'. 'Can't Put No Price On Love' has long been regarded as North End's 'long lost' single - an inspired disco workout employing that pre-dates the Arthur Baker/Tony Carbone-helmed project's most famous song, Tee Scott/Larry Levan favourite 'Happy Days'. The original multitrack was unfortunately lost, but the track finally appears, 40-odd years after it was recorded. Whether what we're hearing was finished and mixed at the time is uncertain, but the 'Club Mix' is certainly authentic sounding - a genuinely energetic, joyous and effervescent New York disco number with full orchestration, addictive vocals (Jocelyn Brown & Dennis Collins on backing Vox) and a killer groove. Elsewhere across the EP, we get two versions of 'We Can't Live Like This Anymore' - the synth-laden, solo-heavy disco-boogie style original mix (B2) and a superb 'drum break' percussion tool (A2) - and a brilliantly low-slung instrumental dub-disco cover of The Temptations' 'Cloud 9'.

Hip Hop Hooray (4:25)
Written On Ya Kitten (Q-funk mix) (4:18)
Review: There are not many songs in the history of hip-hop that are more important than 'Hip-Hop Hooray'. The track single handedly helped catapult underground rap sounds into mainstream success. The song was a massive hit moving into the top ten on the Billboard and #1 on the hip-hop chart and with a memorable video directed by Spike Lee, it was in heavy rotation on every music and video platform. Naughty By Nature became household names and the single went on to sell platinum status. You could not escape this anthem of the streets. Now, the groundbreaking song is reissued on 7" for the first time in over 30 years.

Midnight Treat (5:49)
Are You Sure (Indy Jane mix) (5:45)
Vicious (6:19)
Bloodline (5:47)
Review: The Paris based Velvet Spirit releases its fourth EP. After appearing on their third releases, the label had to have a release specifically dedicated to Numero 6 solely. If you are looking for something different then check out the head turning 'Midnight Treat'. Electro like you may have not heard. The Indy Jane mix of 'Are You Sure' is particularly nasty (in all the right ways), while on the second side, 'Vicious' is a clever and unique take on tech house that injects a bit of electro in it while 'Bloodline' is the smoothest cut of the lot. Quite eerie in a new wave way, you have to hand it to Numero 6 for making something quite unique.

Nu Zau - "I See You" (8:29)
Review: Nu Zau & Sepp return to Gettraum after previously featuring on the label's recent compilation, this time with more of their groovy tech house sounds. Sepp kicks off with 'Recognize That' which pairs acid-tinged synths with thumping drums and some nice analogue percussive clatter. On the flip, Nu Zau's 'I See You' is a balmy, breezy cut with dubby low ends, silvery tech drums and nice fractured vocals stretched throughout the mix next to happy melodies. The label head Traumer steps up to remix and flips this one into a deeper, more heads-down cut for the late-night hours.

Within The 4th Dimension (6:17)
Aquatic Comedown (6:55)
Review: Now here's an artist name that works on various clever levels. Not just a play on the experimental, boundary breaking electronic troupe of the 80s Art Of Noise but also the alias for Suburban Base's in-house designer who was responsible for countless artworks and album covers on the label throughout the 90s. As a musician he was less prolific but still knew exactly what buttons to press and when to press them with a handful of releases around 93-95 along with Mike 'E-Type' James. Now back together, they're exploring their old signature but with a contemporary twist. A full album is expected imminently but in the meantime here are four great examples of their timeless aesthetic and energy. Make some noise.

Roach Motel - "The Night" (Philippa extended remix) (6:35)
Terry Farley, Wade Teo & Kameelah Waheed - "Dancing After Dark" (TDK 90 Dope mix) (6:08)
Review: A follow-up to last year's successful compilation 'Faith Presents: Ain't That A Groove', is given to us by the London-based label Faith ran by DJs Terry Farley, Stuart Patterson and Dave Jarvis. The high energy house party sound kicks off with Nolan who features the legendary house voice of Sir. Robert Owens. Hilit Kolet isn't shy with the extended remix of 'POV Siren'. This sound is synonymous with Feller and Heller DJ sets of the mid 90s. Philippa's extended remix of 'The Night' by Roach Motel backs that one up with another prime floor filler with hardly any let up. Lastly, Terry Farley, Wade Teo & Kameelah Waheed brings he deep groover "Dancing After Dark" to the party. These tracks will have you and the nightclub crowd out dancing all night.

Glory Verison (6:59)
Rockers Sci Fi (5:55)
Stronger Together (4:55)
Review: Former Grid member and now ambient superstar Richard Norris delivers two new oracular divinations for his very own Group Mind label, the imprint formed in and after the COVID-19 lockdowns to help mindfully assuage the creeping anxieties of the age. A six-track 12" limited to just 30 copies - numbered and signed by the artist himself (move quick, hares) - these six tracks segue between dub and deep listening, fronting the bass and keeping percussive elements spread and panned. Best on the obverse is the A3, 'Mystery Dub', whose endlessly delayed stabs and cutoff conga samples well convey a vacuum-of-space vibe. The B-side moves into snake-charming dancehall territory, the punning, chordophonic 'Rockers Sci Fi' and the vocal blissout 'Stronger Together' being the ethereal highlights.

Promised Land (dub version) (3:09)
Review: A repro of the much in-demand Flames cut first made by the Nairobi Sisters in 1974, 'Promised Land'. Infamously sampled by Q-Tip for 'Whateva Will Be' as well as on a range of earlier 90s boom-bap era productions, it is not at all hard to figure out why it's a coveted record. The Nairobi Sisters were singers Terrie Nairobi and Judy Mowatt, and 'Promised Land' was first recorded with the band The Gaytones, under license to the Gay Feet label. Later cut to Winston Jones' Flames Records, the track and its dub version came to define the Brooklyn reggae scene, owing to the enduring interest it commands today.

Review: You can always rely on New York's Razor-N-Tape for high quality respectful edits. Cut in Brooklyn, here's another disco killer that is great for dancing - courtesy of JKriv & Aaron Dae out now via their Reserve imprint is Londoner Ali Gibbs aka Nebraska, who tweaks a soulful sample with signature finesse; it's part disco, part house and all vibes on "Usin' Me". Lovebirds then get in on the action to deliver a soulful and bittersweet early Chicago house perspective, the legendary DJ Nature never fails to deliver either and gets properly deep and emotive with his terrific remix. As does Scottish veteran The Revenge on the flip, taking the track into the late night on his stellar effort.

Review: It's another family affair over at New York City's Razor N Tape label. For this edition, they have tapped the ever reliable Israeli indie-dance heroes Red Axes for a euphoric rendition of Nenor's 'Do You Remember' (feat Jenny Penkin) making for proper Balearic vibes, while the one-and-only Boo Williams delivers another ultra-deep house journey in the form of 'Besty Smith'. Review: Semi Delicious go full flavour for this new various artists EP to mark their 15th vinyl outing. It's Demi Riquisimo & Michelle Manetti who kick off with the surging house stylings of 'All I Need,' a vocal laced peak time track with rushy feels. Corbi cooks up some rugged broken beats on the sleepy 'Kraken' then Lulah Francs & Nebari tap into he Peech Bosy classic for the vocal top line of their 'Don't Make Me Wait' and pair it with classic analogue drum clatter and gurgling bass brilliance. The flip has three more tunes including the rave of 'Nairless' and blissed out, sun up cut 'Release It' by Last Magpie. Jive Talk's 'Wizards Slippers' is a lovely electro bubbler to round out a diverse EP.

Review: Nu Groove's legacy has long been assured as one of the early and pioneering house labels out of New York. After the first wave it cemented itself in the deeper end of the spectrum with artists like The Burrell Brothers being key to that success. Here they appear under the other alias, New York House'n Authority, on a superb EP of classic cuts that also features Jazz Documents, Tech Tax Inc and House Neegroz, all of whom have been edited somewhat here by new school names. What results is four tracks of deep, jazzy house with classic grooves, superb drum programming and meaningful keys and chords.

Review: London's vital Phonica is a store and record shop of great repute amongst underground music fans. It is now a mighty fine 20 years young and to mark the occasion has put together a series of fine samplers that explore the sort of varied and vital sounds it deals in. This first one kicks off with the evergreen Nya and bouncy piano house bumper 'Broken Needs'. Ninos Indigo's 'Luna' then gets a nice future-facing electro rework from Shanti Celeste that gets you on your toes and Dam Swindle then bring some loopy and feel-good house vibes to 'Allright (Just A Tribute)', a real nod to Chez Damier's early sound. System Olympia's 'A Mezzanotte" is twinkling nu-disco with Italo arps to get lost in.

ABT - "Luv 2 Luv U" (Honey Dijon & Luke Solomon edit) (6:51)
Review: The genius of Nu Groove's ongoing 'Edits' series lies in the quality of its subtle 21st century tweaks of classic cuts from house music's golden age. You'll find plenty of fine examples of this on the latest instalment, volume four. Check first Nice7's bumpin', bass-heavy and organ-rich take on The Sound Vandal's 1991 gem 'Tonight's The Night', which the producer has successfully stripped-back and subtly beefed up, before admiring Hugo Massien's bleeping, tech-tinged remake of the Burrell Brothers' N.Y Housin' Authority classic 'Apt 2A'. You'll find tweaks of two more Burrell projects on the flip: a pleasingly driving Mak & Pasteman edit of the techno, acid and bleep inspired Utopia Project cut 'File #3', and a blissed-out, chugging and saucer-eyed Honey Dijon and Luke Solomon rub of A.B.T's Donna Summer sampling 'Luv 2 Luv U'.

Review: In 1984, Jamaican-born producer Tony Williams gifted the British jazz-funk scene with two exceptional 12" records, both now rare gems. One of these, Nat King Cool's 'Checking Out,' showcases a fusion of MFSB's 'Mysteries of the World' with quintessential UK Brit-funk vibes. Originally released on the Tai Wan label, this single remains as fresh today as it did in 1984, with its captivating flip-side instrumental. Remastered from tapes, these essential 80s Brit-funk tracks are presented on pristine vinyl, adorned with bespoke repro-labels, and packaged in a groovy Soul Jazz/Funk Masters house bag, which means it looks as good as it sounds.

It's an emotive A-and-B-sider of mournful mood, with the A-side cemented by rolling pianos and a central lyric-melody performed by Mariko's talkbox, and B-sider 'Sweet Power Your Embrace' coming as a cover of the 1977 classic by James Mason. Review: You can't beat a good edits label and that's what we seem to have here off the evidence of the first release from NIN Edits out of Italy. Ninja Edits 1 opens with the fused charms of what sounds like sleek, proto-techno synths from Kraftwerk and disco percussion on 'Dance & Music'. 'Get Up & Down' is a deeper cut with some smoky and soulful pads and nice loose percussion that throws it back to the New York disco scene, and the most buttery and seductive of the lot comes last. 'Moon & Night' has a woozy groove and lush strings scoring high next to plenty of rich instrumental funk.

Here he gathers together some of his favourite revisions on one handy, DJ-friendly 12". Intriguingly, some of the standout moments are a little breezier, deeper or more melodious than you'd perhaps expect - see the bongo-driven bliss of the Koletzki & Schwind "Camps Bay" fix-up - but even this picturesque excursion is still 100% dancefloor-ready. We are also loving the moody, big-room ready mix of Howling's "Stole The Night", a jaunty dub-house take on Channel X's "Snug Descent" and the exotic and tribal remix of Sam Shure's "Nandoo".

Review: Classy French deep house label D3 Elements (D3, pronounced day-trois, is French for Detroit, which is a big inspiration on its sound) returns with more of that lush and timeless backroom tackle, this time from Neuronphase. 'Outside' is a dusty jam with atmospheric vocal samples and sustained chords, 'Information Society' has a more playful piano lead and ramshackle drums and 'Shadows' then brings some acid madness. 'Soru' comes as a skipping, percussion-laden original and as a hi-tek soul remix with cosmic leads from Hugo LX rework. Plenty to love here, as always from this label.

This fresh 12" serves up a third volume of label edits from various artists from across the spectrum. Metro's 'Turnstyle Turbulance' is tackled first by NiCe7 who brings bumpy drums, then Mark Broom's Vox Flanger Mixx of an N.Y. The sound is big, bold and 90s on this EP, with 'Reality' setting the tone perfectly with its trance-informed arps, sensual rhythm section and 'outer space' speech samples. 'Find Me' has a slightly more intricate techno make up to its synth work, while 'Rockets' shrugs off the grandiose synths for a tougher rhythm track sprinkled with acid. 'Watch Me' completes the picture with a rawer, nastier workout that maintains that old-stool flavour the duo have laid down on this deadly release.

Following up his collaboration with NYC house legend Todd Terry on the label in March with 'Make You Happy', this reissue reminds us of the esteemed, originally Cutting Records-released classic - a track which later went on to be sampled by Kevin Saunderson (aka Good Life) in his equally impactful hit 'Big Fun'. The original - with its nonsensical "brutal with the millimetre" vocal sample, god knows where it's from, though seeming to effortless capture some inexorable facet of the German psyche - sounds as great as ever, though it also comes backed by a new extended remix from Knight on the B.

An unusual dance release modelling itself on electro and chiptune, but finding itself somewhere in the hidden interstice between them, this is a self-described "libidinous Mediterranean spoken disco" album, giving elements of Telex or Kraftwerk, albeit with a progressive bent best heard on pithy cuts 'Solid State Scouter'. Review: 1990s electronica duo Neural Network - renowned for their contemporaneity with the likes of Biosphere and Autechre - are currently seeing a large reissues campaign by the samaritans at the label Re:discovery. These 'Excerpts' highlight the bulk of their work made from 1993-1997, which, unlike their albums, didn't gain label / distributor traction at the time. Following up part one of the EP series that focuses on the period 1993-1995, these two cuts are the dreamiest cream of that year's ream. 'Brain-State-In-A-Box' is an unusual and almost creepy acid tune perhaps drawing on the 'jokey' presentation of tracks by the likes of AFX or BoC, while 'Modernite Part III' functions as a minimalistic, arpy, electro-bossa-nova reminiscer for deep-sea plungings.

Review: The work of 1990s German electronic group Neural Network is titularly apt for the times. The mood around public-facing AI like ChatGPT and DALL-E has aroused much anxiety and curiosity of late, and they're only the tip of the iceberg. Surprisingly enough for new listeners, though, they'll find that the work of Neural Network - renowned for their contemporaneity with the likes of Biosphere and Autechre - is serene compared to the current mood of AI furore. These 'Excerpts' highlight the bulk of their work made between 1993-1995, which, unlike their former albums, didn't gain label / distributor traction at the time.

Review: The Spanish Hypnotic Collective label attempts to capture its take on the Detroit Legacy with what looks like a new series of various artists' EP. There is plenty of Motor City soul in the gorgeous synths of Cignol's muted acid and deep house opener 'Distance' which is a soothing and reverential groove, but then its pure party from Barce, Alex Martin offers up 313 style tech and three further tunes on the flip explore blistering electro with high-speed funk and cosmic intent. Mission accomplished and we're already looking forward to the next one.

Gjidoda & Gjidoda Jr - "Wish To Be A Movie Star" (7:28)
Review: Gjidoda Music returns with its long awaited third release. It's another various artists affair featuring some right heavy hitters and newcomers alike on the minimal scene. Opening up the first side is US veteran Bruno Pronsato with the typically arcane microhouse cut 'When You Ran Away From Home', followed by some late night mood music by Iljir on 'Ziiik Zaaak'. Over on the flip, Nikdo takes you into a cavernous and glacial realm on 'Confusion' and finally label chiefs (presumably!) Gjidoda & Gjidoda Jr go deep on the swing-fuelled groove action of 'Wish To Be A Movie Star'.

Review: The young but auspicious Amplify label is back with a four fearsome techno EP. Normal Stage is at the buttons and heads out on a warm and dreamy dub techno vibe that soon soothes your soul. 'FV2' is another eight-minute plus dub excursion that quickens the pace but is no less smooth and supple, while 'FV3' brings some airy and organic melodies up top that drift about with a curious charm. 'FV4' shuts down with the most masterfully empty dub of the lot - a wide open space in which to lose yourself and all your woes.

Review: A rather unique new EP in the straddled modes of trance of breakbeat, 'Celebrate The Days' is the latest V/A from German stalwarts Day By Day, and succeeds in motivating us to do, well, just that. Perfect material for igniting tearful beachside bum-wiggles in far-off global corners, it's evident that these tracks are cut from only the finest production cloth. It's in the name: 'Tear At Rave' by Sasha Nevolin sounds like it's just emerged from some kind of cybernetic waterfall, while B-side intrigues, like Nvsession's 'Endure Love', get at the more flow-static and hypnotic elements of ecstatic dance moments.

Review: Cutcross is a label "created to champion the melting pot of basscentric sounds teetering around 140 bpm." The label is run by Sicaria & Mia Koden and this seventh EP keeps up the fine early momentum, but is also a last release they will put out.It joins totters two of the UK underground's finest with Sicaria Sound set staple 'Gruffa' by Nova up first - it's as deep as dubstep gets with a low end so filthy you'll be reaching for the bleach. 'Pastorius' has pinging guitar riffs that weirdly remind us of the Seinfeld theme and 'Ocean Echo' then gets all watery with oodles of echo. 'Pips' is melting of fairground melodies and dark low ends. Adios to a fine little imprint.

Review: Japanese rare groove merchants Nautilus are back in the wake of their Reconnection album with a new 7" of sweet and smooth jazz funk in their signature style. There's an endlessly crisp quality to the playing and production on Nautilus records which ensures they land with maximum effect. The A side on this new single is 'We Gettin Down', a bright and breezy confection with some choice talk box action, Rhodes and synths in conversation and sprightly beats. 'Nautical Table' gets a little craftier, dealing in skittering drums and nimble piano without losing that clarity we've come to expect from this highly talented group.

Review: Guy From Downstairs is one of the seemingly endless supply of Romania producers who can serve up slinky tech sounds. He's released on a range of labels before kicking off his own GFD outlet which is where he appears this time out. The first two tunes are next to Nu Eau and 'Den Sing' is all bubbling bass and supple lines with a tripped-out cosmic feel, then 'Vibe Shift' gets more gritty with its basslines while smooth chords soothe the soul. Nu Zau then goes it alone on a kaleidoscopic cut awash with melody and Guy From Downstairs closes down with the rasping and rolling 'Enerjaeo'.

Review: There is plenty of psychedelic colour to this latest EP from the Spanish Baffling Noise label. It appears to be the first release from Numbat who has a love of long, winding, slow-motion synth patterns that weave their way in and out of deep, dubby, stylish drums. That is certainly the case on 'Southern Exposure' (Hybrid Man remix) while 'Amalgamate' is leggy house music with happy melodies and 'E-Break' then heads off through the cosmos on solar winds, trippy melodies and warm drums. 'Southern Exposure' is a chubby, dubby, sludgy techno head wrecker in its original form.

Review: American Anthony Nicholson is one of the underground's most noxiously outspoken characters, especially during his days with the Dope Jams record store where he would right diss notes on 12"s and LPs he didn't like. Thankfully his own work is up to scratch and now the veteran becomes part of the Yoruba family. 'Nucleus Scene1' is his contribution - a signature deep house cut laced with real soul, jazzy chords and life-affirming melodies in a vibrant arrangement. The Yoruba Soul Mix gets even more soulful and mind-expanding with its funky guitar riffs and then Cee ElAssaad brings the Afro house vibes with some extra piano. Great stuff.

Review: Once of the more creative jazz singers, Nanette Natal was active in the mid-'70s after switching from a career as a classical singer in the 1960s. .Originally released in 1981, both of the tracks on this dynamite 7" are taken from the private press album My Song of Something. They feature outstanding vocal work over high energy, superbly kinetic jazz dance grooves that brim and bristle with more energy than a whole junior school full of children after too many sweets. This marks the first tie these two classic jazz bangers have made it to their own 7".

Review: New Manchester-based label Lacuna Records welcomes Australian producer Nate S.U from Sydney (Conspiracy | When Dogs Fly) who serves up the sunny and playful tech house of 'To The Jazz Cat', followed by 'Toby's Anthem' - a tough rolling, peak time 'energy builder' geared for the main room. But undoubtedly the real highlight on LCNA001 is the remix on the flip by the one and only (iO) Mulen, where the Ukrainian serves up a typically infectious and hypnotic groove in his consistently idiosyncratic style.

"A1" features Frahm's entrancing irresistible melody over some gorgeous all-consuming strings and glacial soundscapes courtesy of Arnalds. "A2" with its heavenly, transcendental beauty has just got to be heard while "B1" explores darker territory with its excavating soundscapes accompanying the most hauntingly delicate cello notes. James Bright kicks off the session with the warm glow of 'Amber' and its slowly percolating beats and painterly synths. Be.Lanuit's 'Nana A Leon' has a starry eyed charm that will get you gazing off into the night and elsewhere Norht Of The Island's 'I Feel' has a chugging groove and exotic synth work bringing plenty of colour. This is a high class EP of richly detailed downtempo brilliance.

Review: As the months warm up we all tend to lean towards the warm and fleshy sounds of dub, which makes releases like this one on Newentun all the more crucial. 'Sugarman' is a classic bit of lovers rock with those earthy guitar plucks, big wood block hits and steel drum sounds. The vocal is silky smooth and full of yearning while heat damaged organs and lazy harmonica further flesh things out. The Ska version has a more clipped and swiping rhythm with a great height to it and then the Jonas Sanchez Trombone Version has big fat wind leads that scream summer.

They've been busy lately, recording the Serendipity album with Lisa Decker and just releasing the Reconnection album amongst other singles and EPs, but once again they've got more beautifully executed music to impart to the world. 'Skyscrapers' rides on a taut breakbeat and features some slinky bass guitar, striking an ever-so-slightly moody tone.
