Review: What an experience it must have been to herald the lifting of lockdown at the helm of a band like Khruangbin, watching crowds reconnect with people and live music like it was the first time all over again. The Texan band have always been dedicated to capturing their live sound, and they decided to mark their life-changing 2022 tour with some choice recordings that not only showcase their own performances, but also the sets of the bands they shared the bill with. Alongside the editions featuring Toro Y Moi and Nubya Garcia, this particular entry in the series features Men I Trust, recorded at RBC Echo Beach in Toronto on August 2 2022.

Review: These seven tracks of scuzzy, lo-fi indie are ingrained with the sound of London streets. The trio of musicians behind it - guitarist Barrie Cadogan, bassist Lewis Wharton and drummer Malcolm Catto - draw on all their 25-year plus experiences of working in multiple genres to serve up blues and rock collisions, psyched-out indie trips, gauzy, summer of love sonics and breakbeat and jazz fusions. The tracks were recorded with minimal overdubs making for an expansive and all consuming sound where the driving rhythm sections do the heavy lifting while the swirling sonics up top take things to a higher level. It might be deeper and darker than you'd expect of this band, but what else would you expect of a record made during this most weird of years.

Review: Headed up by Anthony Gonzalez, M83 have taken a winding trip through beautifully sculpted, electronically embellished indie-pop grandeur over the years. Their ninth studio album Fantasy finds Gonzalez taking the process back to a more instinctive, natural flow born out of extended studio jams, reconnecting with his passion after some of the more commercial peaks and creative compromises encountered along the road the band has travelled. As lead single 'Oceans Niagara' attests, the shift in approach hasn't diluted the power and presence of this most life-affirming of groups.

Review: Grammy-nominated artist M83 is a famously prolific producer and as such new long player Fantasy is his ninth over the course of the last 20 years. His music is not about escaping but about transporting you to whole new worlds entirety. He can do soundtracks, stage compositions, studio records and plenty in between, always with a rare grasp of time, space and emotion. This one was written with live performance in mind so it finds him very present both vocally and lyrically with plenty of dazzling musicianship and exuberant grooves.

Review: Apparently inspired by 1980s computer game soundtracks and the synth-heavy scores to fantasy films, M83's "DSVII" is slated as a sequel to the band's 2007 set "Digital Shades". If so, it's a rather belated one, especially considering the French outfit has released three studio sets and a swathe of soundtracks since then. Regardless, the material here is deliciously evocative, emotion-rich and atmospheric, mirroring the ebb and flow (and peaks and troughs) associated with soundtracks whilst relying entirely on i80s-sounding synthesizers and drum machine hits. It's basically synth-wave, with Symmetry's "Themes From An Imaginary Film" - itself based on music initially intended for the "Drive" soundtrack - being an obvious comparison.

Deep Psalms from a deep man, Good Deeds Music delivers its fourth release that comes from Roxy Music founding member (and oboe and saxophonist) Andy Mackay. Recorded and performed with a band, choir and string orchestra, the music itself is based on the Book of Psalms and takes in a specialist selection of classical, rock and spoken word with the slightest of electronic influences too. God fearing or not, praise the Lord. Amen.

Review: Late last year in November marked the arrival of Theatre of the Absurd Presents C'est la Vie, a thirteenth studio album from much loved British ska collective Madness. It is their first new studio work in almost a decade and now it arrives on double vinyl. We're told that the record was written with the mantra 'Let Madness be Madness' and that shows with some real musical freedom and plenty of the quirky charms the band has always dealt in. It is uplifting yet melancholic in all the right places and another fine success for this Great British band.

Review: Moving away from their two-tone tingles and sauntering silliness, 'The Madness' was a thorough rebrand for the band - exploring a new name, a new sound, a rejumbled lineup, and all the new electronic music tech that te late 80s had to offer. Sounding more like Duran Duran than Madness as we know them, 'The Madness' hears a smattering of guest musicians join the party, including The Specials' Jerry Dammers on piano. It was this LP that caused such a furore at the band's Madstock festival in 1992, that a small earthquake erupted at 4.2 on the Richter scale in the London locale of Finsbury Park. Now you can relive said tremors of excitement with this reissue.

It comes on turquoise coloured vinyl, housed in a sturdy sleeve with three printed innersleeves. The magical live recording came as the band regrouped to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their much loved and vital debut album Industrial Silence. The show in Germany found them at their very best, fully energy and engaged with the crowd not just musically but emotionally. This release has been put together in collaboration with and supervised by the band themselves.

Review: The Valley Of Vision is the latest project by Manchester Orchestra and one that proves they are focused on making music that has a lasting impact. It comes backed with a virtual reality film that immerses you further into their music and deals in broody ambient, indie and cinematic atmospheres. This is a brave project but one this band has pulled off with real aplomb as they put aside their tried and tested instruments and guitar-driven signature sounds to cook up music that goes way beyond what came before and is laden in textural synth craft.

Review: An intense exercise in duality, 'Know Your Enemy' was actually born as a mission by Manic Street Preachers to record two albums in quick succession. 'Solidarity' and 'Door To The River' were simultaneous early-noughties left and right brains, channelling completely different ideas in some ways, and the same ideas in others. Now, the compiled album gets a full restoration, and includes two previously unreleased tracks 'Rosebud' and 'Studies In Paralysis'.

Review: Much loved Welsh rockers Manic Street Preachers serve up a record of lament and reflection on The Ultra Vivid Lament, which is their 14th full length record. The band has said the record is inspired by the music of their earlier years such as ABBA, post-Eno Roxy, the Bunnymen and more. James Dean Bradfield, Nicky Wire and Sean Moore of course all added their own distinctive take on those sounds and the result has you gazing into the distance, lost in the riffs, surfing drums and losing vocals. This version features a bonus 7" with the 'Orwellian' original and a Gwenno remix.

Review: Possessed of one of those 'sing the phone book' voices that could extract gravely gravitas even from the back catalogue of Black Lace if he tried, Mark Lanegan might have been forgiven for resting on his considerable laurels, yet instead he's forged foward across each album with innovation and fortitude both - 'Gargoyle', aided and abetted once again by Rob Marshall and Alain Johannes, expands on the electronic textures and handsome melancholy of 2014's 'Phantom Radio', yet roots them in a bluesy grandeur amidst tales of lost love and redemption. With a lightness of touch balanced out against an effortless charisma of delivery, this is proof positive that Lanegan's gloomy charms render him a talent for the ages.

Review: Johnny Marr's solo debut of 2013, The Messenger showed him channelling his love for classic guitar rock through post-punk dynamics and a sense of urgency apparently abetted by his time spent in Modest Mouse and The Cribs. Keen to establish himself as an artist in his own right rather than a sideman, Payland builds on that album's impact, delivering an impressive salvo of sparky intensity; 'Easy Money' may well be the catchiest and most immediate thing he's committed to wax for decades, whilst elsewhere he brings a chilly frissante to proceedings, seemingly inherited from the like of Wire and Gary Numan. After thirty years of wrenching new inspiration from six strings, it can be a powerful tonic to know that this curiously youthful figurehead is still as restless and driven as ever.

The collection also includes two brand new studio recordings Somewhere and The Answer. Since establishing the current chapter of his solo work a decade ago, Johnny has remained a restless creative, working and recording out of his own purpose-built Manchester studio the Crazy Face Factory - named after the shop owned by original Smiths manager and personal mentor to Marr, Joe Moss.

Review: Time-honoured guitarist Johnny Marr releases yet another new solo album this winter, 'Fever Dreams Pt. 1-4'. Charting his long and isolated experience of the first COVID lockdowns, this album documents the guitarist's "interior life" away from the spotlight of Modest Mouse, The Smiths or The Cribs. A unique turquoise vinyl houses this promising dark new wave pop bit - its sound preempted by the first part, released last year. In his own words, Marr calls it his "most ambitious solo record".

Review: You arguably won't get a more unique or insightful window into the No New York no wave post-punk scene than with this intrinsic batch of demos. Mars would go on to conjure sounds that meshed and blended all forms of punk, noise and even post-rock, before the terms became so commonplace. These rehearsal tapes/alternative takes are lifted from the art collective's early formative years when they were still learning how to channel their communal influences and aspirations into sonically challenging, rewarding movements. Filled with thick room-noise reverberations, this pressing grants the ideal opportunity to play spectator (or a mere fly on the wall).

With a savvy handle on teasing her projects through her socials, Martinez has drawn her fans into the world of this new album around themes of rebirth, growing embryos and eggs incubating in forests. Ambitious and rigorous in its 360 presentation, this is another step on for one of the most intriguing artists of her generation - the huge impact of the release is absolutely guaranteed.

Review: What Do We Do Now is the fifth solo studio LP recorded by J Mascis since 1996. This is obviously not a very aggressive release schedule, but when you figure in the live albums, guest spots and records done with his various other bands (primarily Dinosaur Jr. but also The Fog, Heavy Blanket, Witch, Sweet Apple, and so on), then, to paraphrase Lou Reed, "J's week beats your year." What Do We Do Now began to come together during the waning days of the Pandemic. Utilizing his own Bisquiteen Studio, J started working on writing a series of tunes on acoustic with a different dynamic than the stuff he creates for Dino. The finest set of solo tunes J has yet penned, this is a playful and soft compendium of indie songs revelling in disbelief, uncertainty and community.

Review: When you create a musical legacy like The Beta Band did it can be a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, you'll forever be remembered with a full chapter in the pantheons of popular British music. The opposite of a passing footnote, despite the fact you still rank as a comparatively niche and 'underground' (for want of a better word) group in the grand scheme of things. On the other, there's going to be heaps of expectation on anything you do subsequently, both from yourself and the great, rather unforgiving public. Thankfully, for Steve Mason, he's more than lived up to those expectations across a slew of amazing solo album, both under his name and various guises, and is back to do the same again on Brothers & Sisters. Moreover, his first full length since 2019 might be his best to date, spanning grand maximalist compositions to intimate, slow burn piano simplicity.

Review: Matisyahu hosts the annual Festival of Light towards the end of the year and it was there on December 22 back in 2022 that this Live in Brooklyn album was recorded. As well as featuring plenty of live takes on his own much-loved gems like 'One Day' and 'King Without A Crown', he also tackles a few tasteful covers that were penned written by his son Laivy, and which they performed in unison. There was also a visual recording of this show made and available to find online, which is well worth doing while you sink into the sounds that came at the end of a 15-stop tour.

Review: Atina 'Mattiel' Brown is a 60s psyche-pop inspiration from Atlanta, Georgia, giving the ears of a modern age a new way to appreciate a lo-fi, garage rock style of storytelling. Satis Factory presents the band with its second album since debuting in 2017 with a self-titled LP, and Brown's voice for Mattiel still reigns supreme in its bluesy, telephone filtered manner. Co-produced by Randy Michael and Jonah Swilley and recorded in their native Atlanta, the vintage touches applied to the band's music sees an authentic blend of deadpan vocals, jangly guitars meet with a touch of spaghetti western, subtle touches of folk and rockabilly, with that perfect smattering of dusty sundown blues.

Review: The Mausovic Dance Band may be based in Amsterdam but their music comes from an utterly unique and distant world. Their madcap sounds are driven by elastic rhythms with potent dub sorcery as the five-pice outfit draws on global music traditions and adds in their own synth styles and forward-facing dance floor dynamics. The new album Buckaroo Bank brings an industrial, post-punk feel with proto-electronic explorations all couched in, of course, dub. It's a captivating listen, make no mistake.

The artists chosen to remix were all selected by McCartney himself and are said to feature "friends, fans, and brand new acquaintances." The record has picked up plenty of positive reviews already and that should be no surprise given the heavyweights included. The likes of Beck, Khruangbin, Dev Hynes, Ed O'Brien, Damon Albarn, Josh Homme, Anderson .Paak, Robert Del Naja, and Idris Elba all make for a contemporary mix with diverse results.

Review: A long-loved love child of the 4AD-Domino constellation, heart throbbing Californian songwriter Cass McCombs rocks up to Anti- (sister label to Epitaph), continuing his streaking succession of albums with Tip Of The Sphere. Providing a ninth solo LP in total, this latest record keeps up with guitarry-and-garrish themes of Mangy Love (2016), however richly purporting melodic songs that paint wheatgrass imagery of stretching plains, distant cross roads, and beachside trails to the rivermouth. With fingerpicking expertise to reflect both John Fahey (and Chris Isaak in parts) jangly pianos from a far western saloon making their way into "Absentee", alongside a pinch of Neil Young's soul ("Prayer For Another Day') . With flashes of Alan Vega and Martin Rev to be heard in "American Canyon Sutra" too, to more hippy Buddha Bar vibes in "Real Life" thanks to them tablas, there's always a safe place with Cass.

Madison McFerrin's debut full-length 'I Hope You Can Forgive Me' lays claim to her slick r&b, jazz and folk fusion, exploring themes of love, self-preservation, fear and healing. It is a hugely personal record that finds him tapping into an all-new creative language that allows him to dissect his sense of self while also encouraging anyone else to take more confidence in their own identities. There are many gorgeous moments here from the subtle brass and loose grooves of 'Mezzanine' to warming choruses on 'Elevator Hum.' They all make for an album that plots a real narrative journey with elements that are familiar to all along the way.

Review: There's something unarguably pure about Declan McKenna's 'Zeros'. It's the kind of honest album you would hope to get from someone whose big break came from the grass roots friendly Emerging Talent Competition at Glastonbury Festival in 2015, a year after his anti-FIFA World Cup protest song, 'Brazil', caused an online stir.

Now signed with the not-so-small fry Colombia Records, he takes the attitude of that earlier work, and the expert folk-rock songcraft, and scales up to fittingly stadium-filling proportions. Tracks like "Twice Your Size" showcase the artist's more ferocious, riff-heavy side, while the upbeat opener "You Better Believe" is a smile-inducing slice of sharp indie pop, "Emily" reveals a penchant for funky, psyche-tinged tones and efforts such as "Sagittarius A" offer breezy, playful sing-along moments.

Review: Ahora, the new record by Melenas, is the polar opposite a third-album slump. Other bands might suffer from a lack of inspiration typical of such a critical creative moment, but this Spanish quartet reappears more invincible than ever, reassembled with a splendid palette of sounds raising the question: can you make jangle pop and garage rock with synthesizers? The likes of 'K2' and 'Bang' recall a resounding yes; in fact, the glorious throb of analogue keyboards, which dominate the album, do not betray Melenas' sound, and in fact propel it to an ascended pop heaven. Textured vintage synths, such as the Korg Delta or the Yamaha PSR-36, provide and maintain said immediacy, also imprinting a fascinating gamut by stretching the band's sonic identity, a transformation heard not only in the the crystalline pop of '1986', but the sombre, but moving undertones of 'Flor de la Frontera'.

Review: Melody Fields hail from Gothenburg in Sweden and have mastered the art of weaving together modern psychedelia and indie rock. Their new album 1901 does all that and more with ten cuts of well crafted sound that pairs aloof vocals with swirling guitars and plenty of rich drum textures. Some tracks are singer-songwriter classics for sunny days, others are more electronic mood setters and ambient excursions. Things grow more intense as the album unfolds, which makes it all the more exiting and enthralling proposition.

Review: Gothenburg psych rockers Melody Fields debuted in 2018 with their self-titled album, and they've taken their time returning for a much-anticipated follow-up. Hot on the heels of 1901, they're back with a fresh idea to explore. As opening track 'Hallelujah' demonstrates, there's as certain Balearic-meets-Madchester influence creeping in to balance out the more trad psych rock stylings in the band, and it's no bad thing. This sense of late night dance energy carries through the album, but don't think they've shirked their rock foundations as collaborators appear from the likes of fellow Swedish heavyweights Goat as well as Fuzz Club Records' Al Lover.

Two of them were originally written by the man, the legend, Alice Cooper, and one is by nose rock gang Flipper. The record is said to have influenced bands such as Sunn O))) and Sleep over the years because of the way it layer sup heavy, droning guitars. First release back in 1992 and something of a cult classics, this reissue comes on red wax. Back then, the album was known as a set titled LP, but also under the name Lysol.

Review: The Melvins, known for their unapologetically experimental and abrasive sound, continue their legacy of sonic exploration with Tarantula Heart, set for release via Ipecac Recordings. The album, featuring a five-track lineup, including the sprawling 19-minute opener 'Pain Equals Funny, which displays the band's penchant for pushing the boundaries of conventional music. One of the album's defining features is the incorporation of dual drum parts, with longtime Melvins drummer Dale Crover teaming up with Roy for an impressive display of rhythmic complexity. This collaboration adds a new dimension to the Melvins' sound, further solidifying their reputation as pioneers of unconventional music. Recorded, mixed, and co-produced by Toshi Kasai, a longtime collaborator of the band, Tarantula Heart adds to the album's eclectic sonic palette. While The Melvins may never achieve mainstream success due to their avant-garde approach, this album stands by their unwavering commitment to artistic integrity and innovation, making it a must-listen for fans of boundary-pushing music everywhere.

Silver Town is their fourth studio album and it gave rise to several singles including 'A Place in the Sun' and 'Rain Steam & Speed.' Review: Kings of midwestern emo return on their exceptional, devastating eighth full-length Some Of It Was True. Known for putting Scranton, Pennsylvania (home to the likes of Tigers Jaw, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, Title Fight) on the map, The Menzingers have accomplished a relatively unique feat for artists of the emo/punk variety and that's staying together. Where most acts often have a brief lifespan in which they distil malaise and emotions of that slice of life, what happens when a group continue to remain together, writing, touring and growing over multiple decades? Musically refined to the point where the band sonically toe a line closer to the likes of The Gaslight Anthem and the realms of Bruce Springsteen-inspired Americana-punk, yet lyrically as brazen, dour, uncomfortable and honest as ever, The Menzingers are rare, living proof that an emo band can make it well into thirties/forties, but according to them, it still hasn't really gotten any better.

Review: The Messthetics is a new instrumental trio project formed of Fugazi rhythm section Brendan Canty and Joe Lally, and Washington DC based experimental guitarist Anthony Pirog. This self-titled debut was put together from live sessions recorded at Canty's rehearsal space throughout last year, with very little overdubbing. The coupling of exploratory jazz-based experimentation with the bristling post-punk sensibilities makes for a consistently interesting listen throughout. Lead single 'Serpent Tongue' highlights this musical duality, written in unusual time signatures but underpinned by fuzz-drenched power chords and relentless bassline. The first full-length featuring Canty and Lally since Fugazi's hiatus in 2002, 'The Messthetics' is an aspirational debut from this new venture, and a must-listen for any fans of the aforementioned band's off-kilter punk sound and Pirog's rich and textural guitar work.

Review: Canadian noise-rock trio Metz deliver their fifth full-length LP for their home label Sub Pop. Expressing an exponential graph of maturity, that has grown over their decade or so of recording and releasing, Metz' sound on Up On Gravity Hill veers more towards an almost black-metallic atmosphere, to counterpoise their originally stark, rageful sound. Conceptually, the album's change in sound matches its thematic content, with the band having found more peace in contrast, and the life-promising realisation that one can only experience its most joyful moments on the sole condition that one has also suffered its worst vagaries - there is no paradise without the fall. On the likes of '99' and 'Entwined', we're met with a driving, repetitious howl set against a sludgy axe-y backdrop, as vocalist Alex Edkins performatively laments and celebrates the ways of the world at the same time.

Review: Electric life-givers, MGMT, return for their fifth album Loss Of Life. Shockingly, it's been six years since 2018's Little Dark Age, in which the duo proved their capacity to evolve beyond the pale of their earliest electro-pop singles. Here, they adapt even further, enlisting the help of a well-selected cast of familiar faces - Christine & The Queens, Danger Mouse, Dave Fridmann, James Richardson, Oneohtrix Point Never, and Patrick Wimberly - all while declaring the project to be the yield of a calculated fusion: "20% adult contemporary" plus an unspecified amount of hero's journey subversion. From the standout single 'Dancing In Babylon' through to more esoteric twin sonic flames like 'Nothing To Declare' and 'Nothing Changes', this feels like an album dedicated to lost causes, overobsession with singular life trajectories, and moving through hard times.

Review: Since their early heyday of mammoth pop hits, electronic-indie duo MGMT seemed to sound gradually more and more conflicted, unsure whether to continue producing stadium-scale hooks or follow their eccentricities. It seems, with their fourth full-length 'Little Dark Age', that they've opted for the latter - sounding all the more confident and cohesive for it. 'Little Dark Age' sees the pair channeling their synthetic poppy psychedelia into their darkest, most serious and interesting songwriting yet. Anybody who panned 2013's self-titled album or 2010's 'Congratulations' should be pleasantly surprised by this return to form and new-found resolve. 'Little Dark Age' is a far cry from MGMT's definitive debut, but it's to the band's credit that exploring the more weird and wonderful corners of their pop-sensibilities has worked so well.

Review: Last year, Phil Everum surprisingly relaunched The Microphones, his post-rock vehicle of the late 90s and early-to-mid-2000s, in order to release an album that contained just one 45-minute song. That might sound a bit much, but it was actually rather good all told, with plenty of musical twists and turns and lyrics from Everum that looked back on his life experiences to date. This follow-up is even more surprising. Described as "ambient, but not ambient music", The Foghorn Tape consists entirely of a looped bass tone - created to sound like a classic cliff-top foghorn - drenched in varying amounts of hiss, noise and gritty aural fuzz.

Review: Midlake fans can finally rejoice as the band's long-awaited new record, For the Sake of Bethel Woods, has land don Bella Union. It comes as a deluxe package with white, heavyweight vinyl and an accompanying European tour this spring. As with many albums of these last few years, this is one consumed by ideas of loss, isolation, hope and community. It is the group's fifth LP and first in almost a decade after 2013's Aniphon and is full of immersive warmth and musical mystery. They seem to have a fresh intent and purpose in these tracks which boast psychedelic space-rock and sticky guitars. lush harmonies and plenty of light and dark contrasts.

Review: The Midnight's latest Heroes is a stark display of the musical evolution of the New York duo. A band that started as a synth heavy proposition, extensive touring across the globe (including a headline at London's Brixton Academy) and the desire not to repeat themselves in creative terms has led to the bigger vision and wider appeal of what their label calls "fully-realised, arena-worthy songs".
Heroes is the final part in a trilogy of albums that started with 2018's Kids, followed in 2020 by Monsters. "For me, Kids is self-knowledge, Monsters is self-love, and then Heroes is empathy," said singer Tyler Lyle. "I got into depth psychology and this idea of aetiology, the way a human forms. The world doesn't get better but we do. We grow into ourselves. We grow into our voice."
Still, Heroes remains definitely more a case of evolution than revolution - there's still more than a hint of the gorgeous synth sounds in evidence, but with a lyrical maturity and smartness that gives even its most pop moments an unexpected twist.

Review: Mind Maintenance is certainly an appropriate name for this duo. Usually grounded in jazz, here bassist Joshua Abrams and drummer Chad Taylor look far beyond the world of cool cats and late night bars, casting their gaze on more organic and earthy tones. Picking up a guimba - perhaps better known to some as the guitar-ish sintir regularly heard in Moroccan music - and mbira, a family of Zimbabwean percussive instruments, the tones are, unsurprisingly, transportive.

Through highly complex but minimalistic arrangements we are taken to places that can only really be described as 'not here'. The repetitive loops of padded beats and chimed melodies seem to go straight for the mind's eye, boring ever deeper into our subconscious and holding on tight once there. Close your eyes and the world in front of you quickly fades, leaving nothing but hypnotic tones that deserve to be heard outside, beneath the stars, by the fire.

Review: The Minneapolis Uranium Club Band's Infants Under The Bulb album is an engaging journey through unbridled punk creativity and raw guitar energy. Released amidst their hometown's vibrant underground scene, the album defies categorisation in the way it blends elements of punk, post-punk and experimental rock. With relentless rhythms, angular guitar riffs and cryptic lyrics, each track unfolds in heavy and arresting fashion and the band's unconventional approach and uncompromising attitude challenge listeners to embrace the unconventional throughout this most visceral of albums.

Review: Matti Bye is Between Darkness & White Snow on this deeply absorbing new 12" on Northern Electronics. It comes as four separate pieces that all play out as part of a larger narrative. First up is 'I', a quiet, gloomy landscape on a grey winter's day with the gentle sound of flowing water and muted synth modulations placing you right in the middle of it. 'II' has more presence, a growing sense of melancholy and unease and 'III' allows a little heavenly light into the mix to gently uplift. The final chapter has a feeling of hope with subtle keys radiating that from deep inside.

Review: Japanese-American indie-rocker Mitski was once a cult favourite, but in recent times her audience has grown exponentially, helped by the critical praise heaped on her fourth album, 2016's Puberty 2. Two years on, Be The Cowboy arrives amongst a blizzard of publicity and many more positive reviews. It's certainly a hugely impressive set, with each of the 14 songs dealing with romantic and interpersonal relationships in some way. There's much heartache, of course, expressed both lyrically and in Mitski's distinctive, emotion-rich vocal delivery. Musically, the album never sits still, either, darting between grandiose slabs of poignant moodiness and the kind of jaunty, disco-tinged goodtime grooves that belie their melancholic inspirations.
