Mazatec EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: AOP 004. Rel: 12 Nov 18
Techno
  1. BPMF - "Liza On Clouds" (6:20)
  2. Invisble Menders - "Three On Three" (9:10)
  3. Memphis - "Altered States" (7:03)
  4. Miro SundayMusiq - "From Behind The Corner" (8:39)
Review: Following an excellent EP from Memphis, Animals On Psychedelics returns with more weird and wonderful party fare from the outer reaches. This time it's a various artists release that brings together all the producers involved in the label so far, while also introducing BPMF to the fold with the woozy, rubbery synth shapes of "Liza On Clouds." Jane Fitz and Dom Ahtuam's Invisible Menders project presents the rolling, psyched out melodics of "Three On Three," while Memphis pushes further into experimental territory with the wonderfully fractured "Altered States." That leaves it to Miro SundayMusiq to complete the EP with the wave-meets-Italo tones of "From Behind The Corner," a perfectly noirish flourish to finish a sterling record.

  1. Gilbert - "Illumination" (6:54)
  2. Mindless Evolving Objects - "Lunar Trace" (6:03)
  3. Datawave - "Ionic Pulse" (4:27)
  4. Zobol - "Scatterbrain" (5:29)
  5. Nikolay Sunak - "Dance & Cry Baby" (5:05)
Review: Distorted Sensory Perception is a new label emerging out of the Bristol underground to represent the deeper end of the techno and electro scene. The first release is a various artists affair that kicks off with the bold and expressive sound of rising talent Gilbert, last spotted on two excellent Innate releases. Mindless Evolving Objects takes a similar approach laden with harmonious pads and twinkling arps, while Datawave takes things in a darker direction without losing that melodic nous. Label founder Zobol has an emotive bent in his track "Scatterbrain," and Nikolay Sunak completes the set with the illustrious "Dance & Cry Baby."

Sakla Beni (limited 7")

Funk
  1. Sakla Beni (4:42)
  2. Sakla Beni (Karaoke) (4:40)
Review: Earlier in the year, Kutiman took his brand of psychedelic fusion to Wah Wah 45s for the very first time. Here he returns home to Siyal Music with Turkish vocalist Melike Sahin in tow. "Sakla Beni" is wonderfully odd and exotic - a spaced-out psych-funk affair that wraps mazy, Moog style motifs, mind-altering orchestration and Sahin's wide-eyed vocal around a skewed, low-slung groove. It's brilliantly hallucinatory, as is the accompanying "Karaoke Version" - a superb instrumental take that allows listeners a chance to revel in the intricacy of Kutiman's arrangements. In this context, "Sakla Beni" sounds like it should be gracing the soundtrack of a particularly odd late 1960s Turkish film

  1. Blues For You (Danny J Lewis rework) (5:41)
  2. Blues For You (Marc Cotterell rework) (7:50)
Review: Plastik People cast their gaze back to a garage house staple and give it a new lease of life on this cool and deadly white label. The original "Blues For You" by Logic is a pinnacle on the Strictly Rhythm catalogue - some might say untouchable - but Danny J Lewis and Marc Cotterell are here to tell you otherwise. Lewis lands on the A side with a version that keeps the structure of the track intact, and speaks those iconic hooks through a different set of instruments that gives the track a new lease of life. Cotterell meanwhile smooths the garage jerk of the original out into a more linear house thrust while working the vocal samples with glee - it's a respectful approach that simply repositions the groove of the original to give it a fresh flavour.

It Lurks (12")
Cat: ENV 021. Rel: 09 Jul 19
Deep Dubstep
  1. It Lurks (3:52)
  2. Zealot (3:02)
Review: Encrypted follow up Mesck's incendiary "ENV020" with two warped and woozy cuts from the enigmatic Manta. "It Lurks" switches the standard MC vocal for a crow screech and spoken word from the devil himself. Gloopy and swampy, this will lock your floor down in slo-mo like gorilla glue. "Zealot" takes us even deeper into the darkness with a wonky off-beat kick palpitations and big graveyard washes lapping over the top. It lurks, it lives, it bangs... The devil's music never sounded so good.

  3. Waiting (feat LAOS) (4:46)
  4. Hearts Wander (feat Seba & Emily Harkness) (6:16)
  5. Another Me (feat Klute) (5:09)
Review: MC Fava releases his debut artist EP and he's doing it in pure style as he recruits some of the most respected producers in the game: Logistics, Nymfo, LAOS, Seba and Klute. It doesn't get much better than that, and neither do the vibes; the soft harmonies on "Transatlantic", the yearning poignancy of "We Lose", the total uplift and emotion of "Waiting", the star gazing thrust of "Hearts Wander" and the darker drive of the almighty finale "Another Me" all comprise and fuse to paint the clearest picture of Fava's unique musical style to date. Let's hope we see more.

Electro
  1. Ayran Meydan (5:22)
  2. Dim Sun (4:38)
  3. Kruisata (4:17)
  4. Iskut (8:43)
Review: Finnish producer Mesak steps up on Orson following the previous killer entry from Carl Finlow, and he's got just as much electro firepower to dish out as the celebrated Silicon Scally. "Sata EP" kicks off with the dystopian ripples of "Ayran Meydan," which zips through nervy, strafing synths and nimble acid licks. "Dim Sun" brings a funkier style to the table, while "Kruisata" plunges into the aqueous depths of Detroit flavoured electro. Extended jam "Iskut" stretches out for eight body popping minutes of stern-faced robo funk to fully cut loose to - it's the perfect finishing move on an EP packed full of advanced electro excellence.

  1. Dial Theory (Tony's Slice) (10:03)
  2. Dial Theory (Case Study #9) (new mix) (7:23)
Review: Mark E turns over duties on the latest E-Versions 12" to one of his most celebrated and respected namesakes, Mr Mark Seven! Fans of the Parkway Megamix from Mark Seven should be eminently familiar with "Dial Theory (Tony's Slice)", which is where Mark E first heard it. "A lot of telephone conversations, a lot of pleading, digging, sweat and tears" later and Parkway's Mark revealed to MERC's Mark it was an attempt to recreate a live mix by Tony Humphries he heard on Kiss cutting 2 copies of the phone conversation back and forward forever. All this talking has led to the track featuring here, a serious edit from MKVII indeed! The flipside acid cut, "Case Study 9" is just as potent too!

Review: FunkinEven's Apron label rarely, if ever, puts a foot wrong, whether putting out ragged techno, raw hip hop or whatever in between. It is Molinaro who steps up now after first landing on the label back in December 2017. The NTS host has long been a firm part of the London underground and has a lo-fi, frazzled sound that blurs the lines between a number of different genres. Here he offers spaced out and grizzled drum tracks, unsettling machine-made ambience and rough and ready beatdown that Theo Parrish would admire. It's been a long wait since his last release, but this EP was well worth it.

Techno
  1. G (7:58)
  2. J (6:54)
  3. L (7:29)
  4. K (7:29)
Review: When a white label launches from an artist called MPX with single letters for track titles, you know there's some serious techno incoming. This four track EP is brimming with rugged, street-tough energy; from the slapping drum jack and throbbing b-line pulse of opener "G" to the crunchy strut of "J." There's plenty of psychoactive flair to match the classic drum machine flourishes though - "L" has a wicked arp coursing through its veins, while "K" takes the same rhythm section and boils it down to a hypnotising whirl of techno perfection.

The Black & White EP (hand-stamped 12" limited to 250 copies)

  1. Mateo Murphy - "Black River" (7:02)
  2. Sonitus Eco - "Ruffcut" (5:48)
  3. CMNT - "White Heat" (5:34)
  4. Fourmatic - "Ectosketch" (5:50)
Review: The shadowy, techno oriented CEMENT label launched last year with a split release featuring Owen Jay, Molegrip, Cyan341 and CMNT (most likely someone affiliated with the label). Now they're back for round two, and a similar format follows leading in with Mateo Murphy and the linear dub techno immersion of "Black River". Sonitus Eco comes up next with the more spaced out, back room hypnosis of "Ruffcut", CMNT is back once again with the needling arps of "White Heat" and Fourmatic completes the package with a dark and epic electro extravaganza in the form of "Ectosketch".

  3. (Soul) Rebel 23 (Reginald Omas Mamode IV remix) (3:30)
  4. Snake Eyes (Ishmael Ensemble remix) (8:11)
Review: If you've not yet got your ears around Roger 'Chip' Wickham's sensationally sunny, jazz-fired "Shamal Wind" mini-album, we suggest you check it out post-haste. In the meantime, Lovemonk has reminded us of its magnificence via a new set of reworks from some seriously hot producers. Max Graef handles side A, first serving up a chugging, mind altering and heavily percussive "Bongo Mix" of "Soho Strut", before reaching for the sub-bass and fizzing, juke-tempo jazz rhythms on the bonkers but brilliant "Bass Mix" of the very same song. Over on the flipside, Peckham beat-maker Reginald Omas Mamode IV serves up a dusty, Rhodes-laden take on "(Soul) Rebel 23" featuring his own soulful vocals, before Gilles Peterson favourites Ishmael Ensemble mix live jazz instrumentation with rolling house beats on a sublime revision of "Snake Eyes".

Review: Two decades have passed since Massive Attack signaled a new stage in their career with the dark, paranoid and claustrophobic brilliance of "Mezzanine", their third studio album. Given the current global political climate, it arguably sounds even more relevant 20 years after it first hit stores. This time round, the re-mastered original set comes accompanied by something none of us have heard before: Mad Professor's complete dub translation, which was slated for release around the turn of the Millennium but for one reason or another never came out. Like his take on "No Protection", it's an inspired set of revisions that takes 3D and Daddy G's dense and red-eyed originals into wild new bass-heavy places. Even if you own the original version already, it's well worth picking up this special edition just for that alone.
