Roots/Lovers Rock
Aisha - "Guide & Protect" (3:45)
Mad Professor - "Aztec Warrior" (3:45)
Review: Is there a more consistent partnership in UK lovers rock than Pamela 'Aisha' Ross and Neil 'Mad Professor' Fraser? The pair has been working together consistently since 1986 and continue to periodically deliver killer cuts. 'Guide & Protect', which was first featured on the CD (but not vinyl) edition of Ross's 1987 album High Priestess, is one of their best - a sweet, life-affirming affair in which Ross sings sweetly and emotionally atop a typically synth-heavy, dub-flecked lovers rock 'riddim' by the effervescent Fraser. On this 7" edition, an edited version of the 1987 original comes backed by 'Aztec Warrior', a deliciously dubbed-out Mad Professor take on the same riddim featuring echoing flute and brass snippets.

Respiration (4:23)
Review: The latest record to be added to Lil Static's catalogue is 'Respiration', a classic track by Mos Def and Talib Kweli under the duo name Black Star - and featuring an uncredited cameo verse from fellow rap stalwart Common - first released in 1998 on their self-titled album. Known for famously sampling a monologue from the hip-hop/graf documentary Style Wars in its intro, the pair exchange authentic rhymes and riffs, contemplating many ideas in the lyrics such as inner city Brooklyn life, personal philosophies, and Pan-Africanist ideas.

Twilight (Coastlines remix) (4:23)
Review: Twilight is the latest piece by long time DJ, producer and remixer, Dominic Dawson. The Japanese label Flower, has released this single to 7" complete with a remix for the second side. The title track is a catchy and funky house track that while the remix is a bit more Balearic and beachy. Both versions have their place in any house setlist and will set the tone for any eclectic DJ set. With the DJing background Dominic has, he is a great guide to setting the mood with music. Like the title artwork suggests, this is perfect music to watch the sun go down to.

Patrick Fitzgerald - "Punch" (3:36)
Jello Biafra & Motorpsycho - "Punch" (3:57)
Review: Two towering labels, Alternative Tentacles and Crispin Glover, break the mould for a momentary merger on this artistic collision of rogue planets: a new split reissued 7" housing that infamous syncretic, Patrick Fitzgerald, Motorpsycho and Jello Biafra, and their twin versions of Fitzgerald's original song 'Punch'. Fitzgerald is best known as a pioneer of folk punk, famously channelling his sardonic wit into a fleeting, light but somehow also epical sound. 'Punch' first surfaced in 2009 as a one-off single released under Crispin Glover's remit; it's now heard once more in both versions, tracking incendiary denunciations of politics on Fitzgerald's part, amid a suicidal, guitar-driven ascension into the air.

Koralle - "New Levels" (feat Illa J) (2:49)
Modern Sound Quartet - "Chartreuse" (2:33)
Review: An Italian library gem reimagined by beatmaker Koralle and rapper Illa J. An indelible new instalment in Four Flies' Reloved series, 'New Levels / Chartreuse', comes bundled with the original instrumental from late 70s Italian ensemble Modern Sound Quartet. With the aim of the series in mind - which is to put a modern and urban spin on tunes from Italian golden age soundtracks and library music - Koralle deploys his unique jazz-funk sound to create a smooth and stylish hip-hop beat to which Illa J adds irresistible swag and coolness. More than a remix, 'New Levels' takes 'Chartreuse' into the world of contemporary hip-hop and rap.

Staying Alive (4:12)
Review: Vampisoul dedicate one more 7" to another fresh-from-the-woodfired slice of modern cumbia, this time from the eponymous La Cumbia Moderna De Soledad band and Machuca Cumbia respectively. On the A, the former band offer up a two-toning cumbia version of Rod Stewart's 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?', sparse but well-wrought in its sound. The B is a treat that vibrates at a different, but equally as effective frequency, being a convincingly retro take on the Bee Gees' 'Stayin' Alive', and lending the song's ineluctable melodies a Latin twist by way of hypnotic percs and guitars.

Review: No Bad Vibes is not only our mantra for the year ahead, but the name of this heart warming wedge of roots and lovers rock from Macka B and Patrick Andy. It's a brand new cut rather than a reissue which is what you might expect if you didn't know, such is the authenticity of its deep cut grooves and the buttery smoothness of the vocal from Jamaican-British reggae singer and musician Christopher McFarlane. The rhythm comes from Vivian Jackson's 'Walls Of Jerusalem' and on the flip is 'Word of The Wise' with a more gnarly vocals and plenty of well-picked and earthy guitar riffs.

Relapse (7" edit) (3:35)
Secret Garden (7" edit) (3:43)
Review: The Vinyl Fanatiks label is doing a superb job of offering up classics from days gone by that need to be heard again. They do so in a range of genres and Mad Dog is behind many of them. He is a hardcore maestro and two of his most explosive sounds are offered up on this new limited 7". 'Relapse' opens up with hurried breakbeats and skittish snares that explode and implode over menacing basslines. There is no let up on the flip when 'Secret Garden' storms out the blocks with just as much breaks-driven energy but more smooth and pensive synth work.

Da Whole Kit & Kaboodle (3:35)
Review: The good work of the small but already mighty Boom Bap Classics label continues here as it introduces another iconic pair of 90s gem that are now available on 45 rom for the first time ever. And those gems are Mad Kap's 'Dopest Verse' and 'Da Whole Kit & Kaboodle' which are both taken from his 1992 debut album which itself remains a timeless classic. The A-side is a lovely one with several MCs at work at once next to some mad scratching, and the flip is more raw and funky. Limited to just 300 copies, this release is a must-have for collectors and fans old and new alike.

Review: Hardcore dub heads will know that Mafia & Fluxy's 'Shocking Skank' was first dropped back in 2020 on this River Bank Records label. It's a popular cut from the label heads aka the prolific production duo of drummer Dave and keyboard player Leroy. They work in Jamaica and the UK and have put out a rather mad 27 albums up to now. This gem has warrior leads and wobbling low ends with some bright, light-emitting chords that get you standing tall. Mix 2 on the flip is a subtle tweak.

Review: The Magic Fingers of Chachi Romero comes correct again on the fresh new release from Open Air 72. It's a project that digs into the nu-funk movement with retro-funk energy and plenty of forward-thinking synth sounds that echo the likes of MoFunk, Zackery Funk Force & Dabeull. This new one is another one for the floor and will get dancers in a spin with 'Diamond Life' serving up Southern California-style funk but with the metro-charm of New York City. Another doozy, then.

When The Two 77's Clashed (version) (3:24)
Review: Mal-One is a historian of punk rock music in many ways. From growing up on the same street as the Sex Pistols' Steve Jones and Paul Cook, to studying the culture in many aspects from the sound, artwork and people in the scene. Mal-one is a beacon to the origins of the UK Punk beginnings. Many say his artwork captures the scene and time perfectly. 'When The Two 77's Clashed' is the lead single from the full-length album Punk Rock Is Back! At first listen, you immediately hear the UK influence and Sex Pistols up, front and center. The alternate version is on the B-side is a touch more reserved and holds back on the energy of the original, focusing more on the bassline to take the lead then the all-out angst of the album version. For those interested in this period of Punk music, Mal-One is staggering figure of the culture.

The tune is of course widely credited with being the first track to ever sample the amen break so many art forms owe it a real debt of gratitude. Its blend of old school hip-hop, electro and club music is topped off with rapper MC Tee in fine form. This reissue on Lil Static comes in limited quantities and is backed with 'Get Stupid Fresh' (part 1), another classic joint from back in the day.

Review: The limited 7" edition of Marine Eyes' latest full-length ambient record 'To Belong' hears a distilling of the original fourteen-track record down to just four selections. Though every track on the digital version of the album works in its own right, the choice on offer here - 'Hushed', 'Of The West', 'Bluest' and 'Call & Answer' - are particularly deserving of the study on wax. Something static, nigh time-crystalline is achieved on the B2, with its held root note evincing something of the quality of an infinite dream; the A1 recalls some mix of DJ Healer, Malibu or David Motion with its three note tenor-pad lilt; the A2 gets at the best of both worlds, sounding like a paradisiacal bathhouse vision set in slow motion; the B1 is the tensest, opting for a moodier key, but its reversed guitar taps and sustained choir-synth working in a no less lachrymose aesthetic.

Review: The MARK IV's single 'If You Can't Tell Me Something' is a soulful masterpiece encapsulating the essence of the 1970s r&b era. Released during a time of great musical innovation in this genre, it weaves a rich tapestry of smooth vocals and funky instrumentation with infectious rhythms and heartfelt lyrics. It's a nostalgic, heartwarming sound to listen back to as the harmonies and tight arrangements keep you locked in. A truly timeless gem, 'If You Can't Tell Me Something' not only captures the spirit of its era but also resonates with contemporary audiences which is the very definition of a classic, if you ask us.

Just in time for Christmas, JAD has put together a season delight from the vocal star with 'Selassie Is The Chapel' appearing on the A-side of this new 7". Review: It's time to do the Harlem Shuffle once more here and lock into the rhythms of Ray Martell. His 'She Caught The Train' is something of an early reggae classic that now makes its way onto 7" vinyl for the first time. It was originally released in 1970 on the Trojan sub-label Joe in the UK and then rose to fame once more as a cover version from UB40 in 1983. The original has been on a load of compilations but has never stood alone on wax. When it came first as a single it was backed with 'Tea House From Emperor Roscoe' by Dice The Boss but here the label adds a super rare Ray Martell song in the form of 'Cora'.

You Can't Turn Me Away (Mato dub version) (3:54)
Review: Thomas Blanchot aka Mato's love for reggae runs deep. His love for soul music is just as equal. So, what should a producer do who enjoys making original music but also enjoys the art of sampling? Use both! Known for creating reggae/dub versions and then using popular lyrics sung by a guest vocalist over the top of them, giving the original versions a new life and sometimes, a completely different feeling, in some ways working even better than the original. Here, Mato takes the 1981 hit by Sylvia Striplin 'You Can't Turn Me Away' and a super laid back reggae rhythm underneath as a base. And it works so well. Complete with the dub version for the DJs. Sit back and relax to these interesting examples of a stylish way to take mashups to a different higher level.

With a sultry voice and passionate singing, Maxann channels the era's essence, accompanied by a backing band featuring a vibrant horn section and captivating organ melodies. The title track oozes with vintage charm and undeniable groove, transporting listeners to a bygone era of soulful music. On the B-side, 'Find Myself Another Man (alternate take)' takes a different turn, embracing early rock 'n roll vibes with a sprinkling of blues influence and soulful flair. Maxann's vocals shine against the backdrop of energetic instrumentals, delivering a rousing performance that keeps the essence of the era alive while adding her own modern twist.

Review: The Mayberry Movement's 'I Can See Him Loving You' is a Northern Soul masterpiece that was supposed to be released in 1974 but ultimately never was. Why, no know can work out, because it is such a lovely tune it would have been a real classic. This take on Ray Dahrouge's original song is drenched in heart-aching soul with uplifting grooves helping to ease the pain. It has a grand and steamy finale, too and is backed with a lively B-side balad to swell the heart. A real doozy that finally sees the light of day.
