Review: As they often like to do, Swiss label Burning Soul are dropping this one as this standard black 7" but also on these pages you will find a limited edition cream version. Either way the tunes are worthy of your attention from Luana. A-side jam 'Buckle Up' rides a judders mid tempo broken beat with funky bass and stepping synth sequences next to more pixelated cosmic keys. The r&b vocal is sleazy and seductive. On the flip is a trick with plenty of attitude from the vocal which is delivered with seance, control and determination. These are two standout cuts that blur the lines between genres to come up with something entirely new.

Review: Los Caneyes was the first ever solo project from Cuban funk master Juan Pablo Torres and now Future Rootz - in collaboration with Canal Sounds and EGREM - is serving up a first-ever vinyl release of his early singles 'No Estabas No estabas Tu' and 'Oye Ven Y Baila Mi Son' on 7". These two superbly funky Afro-Cuban tracks were recorded in 1973 by this influential musical innovator. They have been turning it out at a steady rate recently on labels like Oscarson but mostly Flower. Review: Frank Staniek has previous form in the minimal tech house scene as Frank Sonic, recording for the likes of Trapez and My Best Friend. Now he's helping shape out the sound of new San Jose label Wild Palms Trax by laying down the second release under a new alias, Link Gaetz. This is minimal delivered with a crisp focus, from the deliciously pointed 'El Camino' to the deep-diving 'Floripa'. The rhythm section is precision tooled and the atmospherics walk the line between escapism and restraint with ease. 'Cactaceae' is a freakier offering on the flip, but it's still looped up for a direct hit, while 'Into The Redwoods' plays around with vocal hooks and synth riffs for something more like an end-of-set knees up, minimal style.

Review: A shining example of soundtrack reggae, 'Sally's Song' was first incarnated in an unlikely spectacle: Tim Burton's A Nightmare Before Christmas. Originally composed by the film's scorer Danny Elfman, reggae reinterpreters Aanant Pradhan and Larry McDonald (of Skatalites fame) here lay down a dour dub cover version. Wistful, moody and clean. It's laced with musings on oppression and slavery with funky drumming and speak-sung vocals making for a compelling mood. Review: The eagle-eyed out there might have spotted Lepaya making a debut appearance on Sanguina back in 2021 s part of a VA split release, but now they step out with a release of their own on burgeoning label Mormorio. Minimal tech is the order of the day here, but other forces are at play such as the subtle pop melancholia in between the broken beat of 'Freeway'. 'Social Disdancing' is a more classically stripped back rhythm workout for the DJs to get tricky with. On the remix front, Traumer has a fine time shuffling up 'Freeway' in his sleek, distinctive style while Giorgio Maulini gets into a trippy tech-trance frame of mind reworking 'Social Disdancing'.

Review: While in 2024 we're supposed to understand, acknowledge, hear and appropriately respond to the trials and tribulations playing out in minds across the world, in many ways driven by global events and the status quo system we have rather foolishly settled on, for the time being, Lebanon Hangover's hiatus-ending two-tracker - their first studio work since 2020 - opens with a clear message. "Life is full of wonder, it's better than going under." Perhaps not the most sensitive way of telling us to appreciate our lot, the track itself, which nods to Head On The Door-era Cure, is all melancholic chords and a feeling of dizzying, perhaps even manic despair alongside the comfort that comes with recognising the universal human condition. It's a joyful but slightly sinister lead. Flip it to find 'KYIV', an acoustic-ambient-Cocteau Twins-esque tribute to the sorrow and pain of Ukraine, and, by association, other war torn regions of the world.

Review: Here's a cool double pack 7" drop on Act Of Sedition which serves up some snappy edits of heady grooves from the broad church of funk and soul. It's been a while but at last the boss man himself is back on wax here, this time in collaboration with Los Desert across four fine tunes. 'Les Voyeurs De La Nuit' is a lovely jumbled-on scattered congas, toms and snaking synths that soon soothe the mind, body and soul. 'Slave To The Strings' is an elastic deep house cut with a busy melodic bassline and serene strings while 'You May Never Leave' is a sonic daydream tethered to a smooth, rolling house rhythm. 'Here With You' closes down with funky little guitar riffs stitched into another mind-expanding and gorgeously airy groove.

Kids in The Streets feature on this package which includes a single and several different versions. The original form of 'Pressure' is a lovely deep house groove with warming chord vamps and smoky vocals. There's a subtle skip to the drums that really locks you in, then comes an Instrumental Mix that makes more of the starry synth work. Review: This is the debut release by the French duo Last Bongo In Paris, also known as Cleon & Jazzy Pidjay. Both are DJs and producers with a background in Latin funk and jazz-funk, and these influences more than strongly shine on 'Green Season', a release whose priority is heavy breakbeats backed by a whismical, live-instrumental flavour. The title track swims and sways through meandering kazoos and psychedelically-filtered falsettos, while the B-side brings up the flip with yet three more incredible live-but-edited-in-post numbers, plus a really weird, never-heard-before 'Bonus Scratch'.

Madrass and vocalist Sofiya Nzau lend a hand on 'Dwokire', an immersive, tech-tinged deep Afro-house number, while Lost Desert go solo on saucer-eyed deep tech-house cut 'Liebe Dich'.

It's a classy deep house outing from the off with Meftah's 'Recognizing Strength In Healing' exploring subtle sound worlds with muted chords and gentle finger clicks. Colosimo's 'It Works' (feat Alessandro Barbieri) has dancing synths and deep and dusty drums overlaid with jazzy chord work and Phonorem keeps the late-night jazz houde vibes coming with 'Hyper Dino' (feat Stefano Nardon). Review: Dynamite Cuts has done it again here. Celebrated American bassist Curtis Lundy called upon his sister Carmen for her vocal talents for this wondrous vocal jazz cut. 'Never Gonna Let You Go' is powered by a superb double bass groove, with lush xylophones and plenty of lively drums al backing the acrobatic vocal performance. Review: It might only be young but Sounds of Sirius is a label that has got plenty of attention over its first few EPs. This seventh outing from the New Zealand crew welcomes a quartet of minimalists who all offer up their own take on the genre. The master Mihai Pol opens with the gurgling late-night intricacies of 'The Sun' then Last Pines explores a tripped out 5am mood with paranoid vocals and warped synths on 'Midnight 01.' Nibaaldo's 'El Repaso De Ludovico' is a superb tapestry of reverb, loops, underlapping drums and snaking bass and Enzo Leep then offers a more peak time and punchy closer in 'Full Bright Inside' to end another fresh EP.

Review: Some 13 months on from the release of volume two, L'Oggetto (real name Marco Scozetto) delivers the third volume in his ongoing Musica da Discoteca series. The New York-based Italian is in fine form throughout, smoothly moving between the lilting chords, eyes-closed electronic textures, acid bass and kick drum-driven deep house beats of 'Aquatico', the oceans-deep, TB-303 powered dancefloor immersion of 'Fluido', the New Jersey garage-meets-early-90s Italian dream house lusciousness of 'DeepOrg' and the gorgeous -house revivalism of 'AltVers', with its synth-flute riffs, chunky bass and tactile pads. In other words, it's a well-rounded EP full of genuinely playable deep house club cuts.

Review: Get your marching boots on and strap in for a white knuckle ride from fledgling label Body to Body. This second release from the French crew is another thrilling take on hard techno and gabba as Sina XX links up with different artists across four cuts. First, it is with Dance Divine for the flat-footed menace and lashing synths of 'Dancefloor Is Hot' then Metaraph joins for 'Color Of People,' a cut that burrows deep on an oversized bassline and edgy string stabs unsettle the mood. Sina XX & Lacchesi's 'Goth It' is a minimal excursion on tightly wrapped drums and bass that are full of pent-up tension then last of all is the most brain-frying and textural rave of the lot as Enahm and Lessss join in for 'Le Demon.'

Review: 1977's Delights of the Garden, which saw The Last Poets accompanied by legendary soul-jazz sticks-man Bernard Purdie, remains one of the proto-rap innovators' greatest albums. The team behind the Dynamite Cuts label clearly agree, because they've decided to stick two of the set's most magical tracks on one must-have 45. On the A-side there's a chance to savour LP highlight 'It's a Trip', where the band sings and speaks over skittish, loose-limbed Purdie breakbeats, fizzing funk guitars and rubbery bass. Turn it over for special (and tastefully executed) 7" edit of 'Blessed Are Those Who Struggle', a classic chunk of politically charged proto-rap featuring killer drum work from the ever-impressive Purdie. In a word: essential!

Review: Japan's Thinner Groove flesh out their distinctive aesthetic with every new release. This time around, they welcome none other than Lemmi Ash, KOOLMFL and Sonic Weapon for a collaborative three-track EP of lowercase minimal tech and textural vignettes. The aim of the game is best encapsulated in the label's commentary: "each track can add a distinctive touch to the night, as like completing your cocktail with lemon and/or lime". Each track indeed sounds to the ear akin to how a fruity garnish tastes, with Ash's 'Presence' bringing tart citrine breaks notes to a gracefully held glass vessel. KOOLMFL's 'Atonbow' is drier bitters, barely availing itself of its trembling chords and sampled vox after an ultra-snappy initiation featuring a mere bass and kick-clap. Thinner Groove know all too well that good music is like an excitation of the flavour palate, and that minimality is the thing that lets such flavours sit.

Review: The Liquidators is a streetpunk band from Santa Cruz. Back in the nineties they roamed around the local scene and recorded some tunes that are well worth hearing. This 7" on Pirates Press features two compositions that sit right up there with the best you can expect from this genre. 'Long Time Again' is a lo-fi ska and reggae fusion that swaggers back and forth with 60s guitar riffs and a dusty sense of soul. It's beautiful. 'Soul Steppin' is a much more upbeat and dance floor focussed tune with punchy street soul and another great set of male and female vocals. This particular 45rpm comes with its own comic book to enjoy while you get lost in the music.
