Review: Exit Planet Earth continues its exploration of the world of electro universe with an expansive, extended six track EP, featuring The Advent x Zein Ferreira, DeFeKT, London Modular Alliance, Konertymi and Zobol. The Advent, whose weekly Gardening Club residency in the mid-90s helped to drag electro out of the realms of the retro and back into the future, team up with Zein Ferreira for a Kraftwerk-on-speed extended mix of 'CarpeDiem', before London Modular Alliance's more moderately paced but still squiggle and bleep laced 'Lump of Coal' plus a 'beats' breakdown for the DJs. The B-side brings us the acid-powered 'Pulssi' by Konerytmi, the bouncy, breakdance-friendly 'Radar' by DeFeKT, and the relatively pure, optimistic sonics of Zobol's 'Data Wars'. Thumbs up all round.

On this instalment we have five different joints to get stuck into, from the slow Afro house throw down of Alexny's 'Meneao' to Siggatunez's slinky, soulful groover 'Boogie'. Look out for the low tempo seduction of DJ Laurel's 'Let The Good Time', which will get a warm-up slot thoroughly juiced for the night to come. Review: For a four track electronic music EP, there's a lot here. Opening with 'Burning Fields' by Aphonia, the uninitiated might expect the whole package to nod to that classic electro sound, highly detailed but lo-fi, packed with dark atmosphere but all about dance floor energy. Skip to track two, though, and Angles of Pompeii present mutant indie-punk-dance in the vein of Detroit Grand Pubahs at their most guitar-y, and minimalistic.
Elsewhere, 'Retreat' is a slow mo maximalist triumph, acid lines flailing over the top of a muffled cacophony of noise that places the emphasis on a lunging, head-nodding bassline. Add 'Athma', Odopt's sinister low end and drum machine tune up that could almost be an accidental piece from the movie They Live and you've got not only a complex release, but one boasting replay value set to last for years after the investment.

Review: Mighty European powerhouse Drumcode rolls out more of its techno tsunamis here with part one of the 12th volume of its A Sides collection. The boss himself, Adam Beyer, offers up one of the biggest cuts - 'Heading South' is a surging, straight-up techno weapon rippled with deft synths that ever forever on the move. Danny Avila's 'My Crew' (feat Flowdan) is built on a foundation of earth-shattering kicks and rolling bass with hellish stabs and vocal fragments making for an intense atmosphere, and Simina Grigoriu's 'Flight Tracker' is the sort of quick-moving techno sound to lock you into a trance. Add in LAAT's 'The Age Of Juno' (oi oi!) and you have a very useful and high impact EP of contemporary techno.

Review: During the latter stages of the "Philly Soul" era, New York remixer Tom Moulton delivered a string of inspired, DJ friendly reworks for the Philadelphia International label. For proof, check this fine selection of classic Moulton mixes for the storied imprint. Check first his version of Archie Bell and the Drells' "Where Will You Go When The Party's Over", which he brilliantly teases out and increases in intensity over nine spellbinding minutes. The funkier flex of People's Choice's "Jam, Jam, Jam (All Night Long)" is a sweaty, low-down treat, while the Teddy Pendergrass rework is a soaring disco classic in the Philly Soul style. Best of all, though, is the string-drenched disco celebration that is his mix of Lou Rawls' "See You When I Git There".

Review: Archeo Recordings bring us some more Balearic Italian treasure here with some gold initially recorded in Bologna almost two decades ago. It's a collaboration between friends Bottin and Lucio Dalla that has never before been on vinyl. 'Lunedi Cinema' was an ident that played before Monday night movies on of one of the main Italian TV channels for many years. This electronic version includes the Martedi Mix from 2008, a Minibar Bonus Track and also a mix by pioneering Italian dream house dons Leo Mas & Fabrice with a Bottin dub sealing the deal. It's been a while but at last the boss man himself is back on wax here, this time in collaboration with Los Desert across four fine tunes. 'Les Voyeurs De La Nuit' is a lovely jumbled-on scattered congas, toms and snaking synths that soon soothe the mind, body and soul. 'Slave To The Strings' is an elastic deep house cut with a busy melodic bassline and serene strings while 'You May Never Leave' is a sonic daydream tethered to a smooth, rolling house rhythm. 'Here With You' closes down with funky little guitar riffs stitched into another mind-expanding and gorgeously airy groove.

Coflo and Lee Wilson combine to do so, with their 'Rainbows' coming as two different versions. The A-side is all steamy chords and impassioned vocals for those intensely emotive and loved-up moments in the club. Review: Detroit/Houston joint venture Kolour are back with another instalment in the Tale Of Two Cities series - and this is one serious all star cast if we've ever seen it! The creme de la creme of nu-disco appears here, starting with crazy Canadian Eddie C kicking off the A side with the sunny slo-mo antics of "All Time Freak", followed by the one and only Napoleon! Simon Mills throws down some more of his usual sexy and lo-slung grooves on "Over & Done". Review: Danny Krivit is currently known as one of the music community's greatest purveyors of top quality disco & house as he continues to perform regularly before sold-out audiences around the world. With his unique ear for what works on the dancefloor he has also become known as "King of the Re-edit." Danny has a deep connection to Kim English's "It Makes A Difference" release on Nervous Records from 2006. Krivit worked with writer Kyle Smith on the remixes that originally made this tune an anthem at his 718 Sessions parties as well as one of the highlights of club nights from Tokyo to New York to London that appreciate quality soulful house. The B-side is Danny's re-edit of one of the most famed dubs from the Nervous catalogue as well as for the producers Mood II Swing. Upon its release in 1993 this dub emerged as one of the defining sounds of summer 1993 at Ministry Of Sound which had just recently opened the year before. The "rushing rushing rushing" hook is well knownby golden era of house afficianados around the world and he does an amazing job bringing this essential hook.

Review: Samosa is doing what's right for it and disco lovers by double-dropping to start off the New Year with a bang. The Italian label has got a new VA EP arriving at the same time as this second volume of its African series. The second volume is another fresh one with an array of artists kicking off with Vincent Galgo who brings some raw percussive energy to 'J'ngolo'. Matalo!'s 'Zaire' gets more down and dirty with some rugged rhythms and Leslie Lello's 'Alcyone' has a joyous feel thanks to the big horns. It's De Gama's 'ETA' which then shuts down things with some Afro-vocal hypnotism.

Review: Shogun Audio's limited edition black series is back with more of that addictive 12" crack. This is an eighth volume of their Shrunken series and another classy various artists affair. GLXY get things rolling, literally, with their soulful roller 'New Soul' complete with meditative vocals. Koherent's 'Endless Haze' is another beautifully deft and deep drum & bass seducer with angelic vocal hints and Linguistics, Dogger & Mindstate then come through with the optimistic chords and mindful bars of 'Change' feat Blind Mic. Gest leaves a darker taste with the more tense 'Shame.'

Unsiputed legend Don Carlos follows up with 'I Believe In Heaven', a truly ascendant slice of house magic, while on the B side Stage 28 and Brother's Brigade bring yet more timeless treasures that sport that unmistakable Roman flair.

Review: Weird balearic acid electro and downtempo from the group known as Hektisch Sprengen DJs (known as the heads of the label Terra Magica). Their efforts until now have been to release oddball music from their contemporaries, but never before have we heard anything from the heads themselves. Drawing on Latin music styles such Cumbia, there are all manner of phoned-in vocal samples thrown in, such as Dr. Alban's refrain from the 1990s hit 'No Hash Hash, No Cocaine'. A low-end-centric, soft-edged effort to induce trance states in the listener.

Review: Following a string of alluring, melody-rich, digital-only EPs, Peace Symphonies makes its debut on wax with a multi-artist extravaganza. Gorge Hewek sets the tone with opener 'Peace Symphonies', a warming, sun-kissed slab of kaleidoscopic deep house/tech-house fusion that reminded us of some of the material released by the All Day I Dream label. Makebo's 'You' is a soft focus, dewy-eyed slab of sunrise-ready bliss underpinned by shuffling house drums, while 'Lazos' by Simon Vuarambon is a crunchy and groovy workout smothered in relaxed jazz piano solos and synth strings. Perhaps best of all though is the gorgeously grandiose, life-affirming dancefloor colour that is the Volen Sentir Pure Magic Healing version of 'Jinx' by Lost Desert and Hermanez.

Review: After coming up while working in the Rush Hour record store in Amsterdam, Interstellar Funk has now branched out and established his own sound and his own label. And that is Artificial Dance, where he hooks up with Loradeniz for this interesting take on cold wave and synth. The tracks are underpinned by contemporary bass and deep groves which makes them perfect for club play but not at the expense of the melodies. They are curious, crystalline, freeform and mystic and help make this a handy record that brings something different - not least the new age ambiance of 'Situational Lullaby'.

Review: Here two of Situationism's compilation strands combine on one 12": 2up 2down, which focuses on high-grade deep house, and the In The Bag series of floor-friendly catalogue favourites. There's naturally plenty to get the blood pumping throughout, from the thrillingly off-kilter Afro-house rhythms of Mike Agent X Clark's 'My Journey Thru Africanism', and Javontte's sensational 2021 single 'Soul People', to the liquid jazz-funk/deep house fusion of BRS' fantastic 'A Night To Remember' - all rubbery bass guitar, huggable chords, glistening guitars, fluttering flutes and swinging beats - and the driving, gospel-influenced peak-time brilliance of Laroye's 'Best Girlfriends (Soulful Mix)'. To cite an old cliche, this genuinely is "all killer, no filler".

Review: American music obsessive and archivist Jerome Derradji's Past Due Records label has got a fine compilation on its hands here. It gathers upside of the very best sounds that San Antonio-based funk band Horizon ever put out. They had a hardcore and devoted local following in the early 89s and secured a number of big radio hits. They were all released on 7"s that you will struggle to ever track down. Thankfully, each one gets assembled here across four fantastic sides of vinyl. What's more, no fewer than ten previously unreleased tracks also make the cut. These are authentic lo-fi funk gems with powerful rhythm sections and seductive vocal sounds.

Review: Clean-cut Scottish producer Kerr Slaven has been touted as a rising star for some time, though it's only since joining Toolroom in 2019 that he's come close to fulfilling his immense potential. Review: Sometimes it's just too difficult to contain our excitement; we're quaking in our boots at news of Khruangbin's next release, with the Texan three-piece this time lending their alt-indie-funk mastery to vocal frontage by Leon Bridges. The humorously titled lead single 'B-side' is emblematic of their stated aim here - to redefine "how people perceive Texas music i that beautiful marriage of country and r'n'b i and really paying homage to that." The sonic result? Bubbling bass and wahhy riffs, over a ghostly and misty relaxers' beat. Review: Toolroom Records are partly responsible for the recent upsurge in jackin' deep house in the early 2020's; this sampler record, the second in their compilations EP series, serves as yet another tour of their grand new deep house estate. Delusions of grandeur are expressed on 'You Are A God' - which, for a track so deitylike, measures itself with rather a lot of restraint - while 'Talking To Myself' contains a vocal sample that is so mouthy and infectious that we really are beginning to believe ourselves to have been possessed by Metatron. 'Mallet' swerves into tribal territory, while ESSEL's 'Try' could be a contender for dance-chart-topper, assuming its piano weaponry is effective enough at swaying the radio pluggers. Joyous stuff.
