  1. Lover Chanting (5:28)
  2. In My House (5:53)
  3. Timothy (3:49)
Review: After a brief dalliance with Because Music, Little Dragon signed to Ninja Tune earlier in the year. "Lover Chanting" is the popular combo's first EP for Coldcut's venerable imprint, following a single-track hook up with BADBADNOTGOOD earlier in the year. Title track "Lover Chanting" is a killer chunk of reggae-tinged synth-pop/disco-pop fusion, with singer Yukimi Nagano providing a strong, ear-catching vocal that will lodge itself in your consciousness and stay there for weeks. Elsewhere, "In My House" is a sultry, off-kilter trip into heavily electronic deep house territory - albeit with some suitably Balearic flourishes and a pop-tinged vocal - while "Timothy" is a whistling voyage through wonky '80s soul/R&B pastures.

  3. Tight As A Drum (4:39)
  4. Tight As A Drum (Bullion Redux) (4:35)
Review: Thomas Leer was mainly active in the late 70s and early 80s, dropping two singles on Cherry Red that provided the source material for the two original tracks on this Emotional Rescue reissue 12". Opener "Saving Grace" is a rich, bombastic blast of synthwave, all chugging arps and massive leads, while "Tight As A Drum" heads into more psychedelic territory, using strange gating techniques and deft FX to create a wondrous, shimmering bed for Leer's poetic chat over the top. Bringing an inventive angle to the release, the label signed Bullion up for two wonderfully warm, wobbly remixes. Honing in on the weirder qualities of Leer's work, these modern interpretations make a perfect bridge from the old to the new - highly recommended!

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
  1. I Predict A Riot (3:43)
  2. I Predict A Riot (instrumental) (3:42)
Review: Rob Luis clearly enjoys an unlikely but inspired cover version; over the years, his Tru Thoughts imprint has served up surprisingly good funk, jazz, reggae and brass band covers of everything from Roni Size's "Brown Paper Bag" and Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing", to Max Sedgley's "Happy" and the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army". It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that Luis snapped up this vibrant South American cover of the Kaiser Chiefs' "I Predict A Riot" by Brazilian MPB revivalists Carolina Lins and Os Plantos. It's truly brilliant, with Lins' bold Portuguese vocal simply soaring over the band's samba-soul groove and fuzzy horn lines. As cover versions go, it's a bit of a doozy.

  1. Nineteen (6:02)
  2. 11:11 (5:35)
Review: After a lengthy studio apprenticeship alongside her father Robert in Floorplan, Lyric Hood is finally ready to make her solo production debut. As you'd expect, there are naturally some similarities between her work and that of her legendary father. "11:11", for example, is heavy, driving and claustrophobic, with slowly shifting, hard-wired electronic looks and subtle but panicked stabs buzzing around thumping techno beats and metallic percussion hits. It's the kind of thing Papa Hood may have released on M-Plant back in the day, which is no bad thing. A-side "Nineteen" is arguably even better. Its' sampled drums and loopy, warehouse-ready motifs are funky as hell and twice as hot, while the subtle vocal samples buried in the mix tip a wink to Floorplan's gospel-tinged techno.

Review: Romanian Native Bog has had a great run of releases of late on some of electronic music's most compelling labels, including Crosstown Rebels, Bedrock and Diynamic. He has steadily forged his reputation as one to watch. Following his contribution to Adana Twins' Watergate 25 compilation, he returns to the esteemed Berlin label - this time teaming up with exciting new vocal-led French trio LKF Project (Sapiens/Atlant). "Her Song" is a pop-inflected and evocative deep house anthem for the main room - you can expect to hear this a lot in 2019. This is backed up by the tension and suspense of "Discrete Class" that's sure to fuel those heads down moments under the strobelight.

Soul
  1. Would You Believe In Me (2:27)
  2. Kuenda (3:12)
Review: This excellent seven-inch single mines the rich seam of Terry Callier style folk-soul that is Jon Lucien's incredible 1973 album "Rashida". On the A-side you'll find the brilliantly breezy, horn-heavy samba-soul sunshine of "Would You Believe In Me", a song so beloved to Lucien that he re-recorded it several times later in his career. On the B-side you'll find the arguably even sweeter and more loved-up "Kuenda", where Lucien delivers attractive scat-style, double-racked freestyle vocals over a backing track rich in finger-picked folk guitar arpeggio lines and atmospheric field recordings of nature. It's a joyously simple track, but one that will stay with you for hours after you've put the record back on the shelf.

Review: The always on-point SlapFunk continues its sixth round of Raw Joints with another four razor sharp jams from a gifted contingent of contemporary producers. Lopaski actually delivers something with the delicacy of Jan Jelinek's finest early micro house productions, but strapped to a more pronounced rhythmic undercarriage. Pascal Benjamin gets into a quintessential minimal house groove that sounds right at home on SlapFunk, while JAMM brings a tougher set of beats to the table. SE62 rounds things off with the loose and limber shuffle of "Fear", which doffs a cap to garage while keeping things dark and deadly.

  3. German Turbine (4:40)
Review: For the 24th release on his Klockworks label, head honcho Ben Klock has reached out to fellow Berlin native (and chief of Kanzleramt Records) Heiko Laux, who delivers a collection of highly engineered dancefloor weapons. Klockworks 24 features the immersive and mentalist epic opener "Self", powered by its minimalistic and cavernous acid pulse that lurks beneath steely rhythms and apocalyptic pads. It definitely deserved the A side in its entirety because this one is serious. On the flip, we have the deep and affective "Antipode" followed by another hypnotic journey down the vortex in the form of - and fittingly titled - "German Turbine" which heads straight for that strobed-out style of tunnel vision. Tip!

  1. Harina De Maiz (2:57)
  2. Corned Beef Hash (3:03)
Review: Founded in 1967 by singer/producer Carlos Oliva and other Cuban immigrants to the United States, Los Sobrinos del Juez were briefly one of the leading protagonists of the turn-of-the-'70s "Miami Sound" - a humid and intoxicating fusion of blues, rock, funk and dancefloor-focused Latin sounds. Their 1974 debut single "Harina De Maiz" - here reissued for the first time since - is a perfect example of that short lived style, offering up a mixture of wah-wah-guitar and psychedelic organ-powered Latin funk grooves and righteous Cuban vocals. On this edition it comes backed by the previously unheard "Corned Beef Hash", a swinging Latin-jazz number rich in vibraphone solos, jaunty piano riffs and plenty of hip-wiggling percussion.

Review: Lucy is back on his esteemed Stroboscopic Artefacts imprint with "Dyscamupia", based on Albert Camus' classic existentialist novel "The Stranger". Here, it is reinterpreted through these three techno variations, all narrated by American Jason Snell (aka Bombardier). It begins with "Forward", a deep, hypnotic slow burner where binaural microphone technology was used to record the vocal recording process, perfectly complimenting the atmosphere of Lucy's composition. "Paused" is definitely the most dancefloor ready version - a tunnelling cut that will sound great under the strobe light, while the barrelling and broken intensity of "Backward" goes for a more contorted take on things.

This four track EP is packed with bombs, from the shimmering, metallic deep house finery of "Running" to the cheeky acid wriggle of "Dusty Pink". Review: Following the hot off the press drop "Time Guard", Lazare Hoche taps up a pair of remixers to provide fresh angles on his latest transmission. First up is Moscow Records' Archie Hamilton, who whips up a propulsive, bubbling techno roller laden with lush melodic content. On the flip, regular Hamilton collaborator Noha serves up a twinkling, mysterious strutter that should sink under the skin nice and easy in the late morning sessions Lazare Hoche records are so well suited to. Using spooky off key synth licks and a steady ticking beat, Noha provides a worthwhile new twist on the original's vintage techno sound.

Review: Dewalta has been doing a fine job of curating his respected Meander imprint of late, with some stunning releases by the brightest stars in the minimal techno scene at present. Following up some quality EPs by newcomers like Sublee and Alci, we've got a stunning release by Italian virtuoso Christopher Ledger - who has carved his own distinct sonic path over the last few years with releases on Brouqade, Animae and Ada Kaleh. "Dark Moon EP" consolidates many of his sonic aesthetics on this 4-tracker: the moody and intoxicating title track with its UKG influence, to the straight up hypnotic tech house of "The Ninth Cloud" (which will mix in perfectly with most of the label's back catalogue), closing with the emotive breakbeat IDM of "Scarlet Heaven" which calls to mind a similar vibe as explored on his recent 'MPC Sketches' EP.

Review: Jack's House makes its first move of 2019 with a third volume of various artist shenanigans pivoting around the crisp minimal house formula that has kept the label on track and in record bags thus far. Rich NxT is feeling tracky and subtly spaced out on the heads down "Dubble," while Politics Of Dancing comes correct with an insistent roller that finds its groove and stays there. Julenn's "Good Company" is a crafty, shuffling workout laden with deep chord pulses, and Legit Trip's "Djedai" takes things in a freakier turn that should resonate perfectly with the after hours crowd.

Review: This tasty 12" marks a welcome return to action for "metalurgic funk" maestro E-GZR, a shadowy, publicity shy producer whose occasional outings on Sex Tags offshoot Wania are rarely less than essential. The headline attraction here is the saucer-eyed geezer's collaboration with Vancouver's Laura Sparrow AKA LNS. Entitled "Crypto Stock", the track offers a deliciously spacey, funk-fuelled trip into deep electro territory that offers a near perfect balance between weighty dancefloor chops and ear-catching home listening fare. On the flip, E-GZR goes solo, wrapping more deep space chords, jammed-out synth lines and bustling bass around a suitably fuzzy bassline and redlined TR-808 drums.

Review: Is It Balearic? sister label Magic Wand can do no wrong with its long-standing series of cult re-edits. The "Special Editions" branch makes its first move of the year with this smokin' hot clutch of nudged up heaters edited by Rune Lindbaek, leading in with a steamy, dreamy version of Lowrell Simons' "Love Message". Lindbaek also tackles "Hologramas" by Frederico Estevez, simmering the track down to a purposeful, immersive drum roll embellished with nothing but some fluttering flute. His take on Craig Peyton's "Be Thankful For What You Got" is all thrumming arps underpinning a cool and deadly synth pop take on the classic soul jam. The final edit sees Lindbaek riding roughshod on Angel Tears' "Ishka", creating a high drama groover shot through with Eastern mysticism.

Review: Some 15 months after the first multi-artist "Folio" EP landed in stores, 1985 Music has dropped a sequel. It's another all-action affair, with all four cuts hitting home hard. Label founder Alix Perez kicks things off with "White Lies", a minimalist roller where metallic percussion hits and evocative soul vocals rise above a thoroughly filthy, wobble-powered bassline. Label favourites Submarine step up with sub-heavy hot-stepper "Grunge", before Scepticz and Lavance take things up a notch or two via the industrial strength distorted bass, mind-altering electronics and punchy beats of "Flatline". To round things off, Hyroglifics and Visages get together on the skewed but energy-packed creepiness of "Searching".

Review: Analogue hardware enthusiasts London Modular Alliance return to Kirk Degiorgio's storied Applied Rhythmic Technology label following a string of fine outings on Private Persons and Dimensions Recordings. Interesting, LMA believe that the EP boasts their strongest collection of cuts to date and we tend to agree. Opener "Peach Heat" sets the tone via rubbery but rock solid electro beats, wild electronics and echoing deep space sounds, before they pitch down the tempo on the sparse, spaced-out heaviness of "Harnessed Black Holes". Further body-rocking dancefloor explorations are provided on the flip, first by the Dexter style heavy electro throb of "Lavendah" and then via the booming bass, foreboding tribal drums and razor-sharp TB-303 pulses of "Precious Materials".
