Review: Mighty European powerhouse Drumcode rolls out more of its techno tsunamis here with part one of the 12th volume of its A Sides collection. The boss himself, Adam Beyer, offers up one of the biggest cuts - 'Heading South' is a surging, straight-up techno weapon rippled with deft synths that ever forever on the move. Danny Avila's 'My Crew' (feat Flowdan) is built on a foundation of earth-shattering kicks and rolling bass with hellish stabs and vocal fragments making for an intense atmosphere, and Simina Grigoriu's 'Flight Tracker' is the sort of quick-moving techno sound to lock you into a trance. Add in LAAT's 'The Age Of Juno' (oi oi!) and you have a very useful and high impact EP of contemporary techno.

Review: Colossio and Luke Garcia combine on this new EP for Microcastle and offer up a mix of solo and collaborative cuts. Musically, techno is the foundation sound here but is explored far and wide. Colossio gets things underway with 'Amen' which is all fizzing pads and buzzy synths over tough drums. Luke Garcia's 'Ryen' is then an explosive mix of strobe lit and peak time tackle with writing lines and freeform energy. Then the pair combine for 'Situation' which is more white knuckle techno and finally 'My Body' which is a dark industrial cut for tense moments.

Review: Radial Records is the product of the friendship between the two artists Cosmjn and Lizz, coming together here to promote their sound, musical ideas and passion for electronic music. The two said that they want their record label to lead to cultural exchanges and a blending of musical influences, enriching the electronic music scene and promoting cross-cultural exchanges and for the first release on the label it makes complete sense for them to share top billing and set the tone. Simply called 'Radi 001', the EP has each one doing two tracks of all new music. Cosmjn's first track 'Touchstrip' is a dark tribal tech builder that has some prog house and a perfect amount of jackin' in it. 'Systems' is an electro funk party track that is perfect for poppin' and lockin'. Lizz's two tracks 'Restore Your Fear' and 'Future', meanwhile, are house burners that show the way forward in house music. Review: Background is a Rimini-based label which specialises in slinky, playful strains of minimal tech house from some emergent names well worth keeping tabs on. Alex Dima has certainly earned his stripes as a name to get you checking the record, and his opening track 'Twisted' offers the mysterious synth touches and boxy drum machines beats we've come to expect, while Luca Piermattei lays down some seriously satisfying trance-minded melodic lines to loosen the crowd up good and proper. Review: Samosa is doing what's right for it and disco lovers by double-dropping to start off the New Year with a bang. The Italian label has got a new VA EP arriving at the same time as this second volume of its African series. The second volume is another fresh one with an array of artists kicking off with Vincent Galgo who brings some raw percussive energy to 'J'ngolo'. Matalo!'s 'Zaire' gets more down and dirty with some rugged rhythms and Leslie Lello's 'Alcyone' has a joyous feel thanks to the big horns. Review: Mineral Cuts are casting their eye back on a couple of gems from the world of progressive house and trance with a sharp diggers instinct. This eighth release on the Kalahari Oyster Cult sub label continues the format of two obscure cuts from different artists, this time leading with Grain's 1998 trip-out 'Does Jesus Have Buddha Nature?'. Dubious spiritual framing aside, it's a spellbinding workout of throbbing low end, pulsing leads and pleasingly crunchy drum processing. Logue II's 'Keep Me From Pain' is an older affair from a hand-stamped white label in 1994, more house-oriented in its make up with some sprightly breaks and organ stabs that meld into a flowing, joyous rave gem.

Review: Akua Grant's outings as Lady Blacktronika are always worth checking, and her first full outing on Peggy Gou's Gudu label is no different. 'Baby I Got It' is full-on aural madness - a bombastic blend of beefy, redlined house drums, ghostly chords, pitched-up vocal samples and discordant minor key melodies - while 'Sing The Blues' is a deliciously drowsy chunk of wayward, dub-flecked deep house that's as beautiful as it is trippy. Best of all though is the locked-in deep house hypnotism of 'Hold My Hand', which features some superbly soulful vocal samples, metronomic bass and spacey electronic textures. Octa Octa provides a fine remix of that cut, too, re-imaging it as a stomping slab of lo-fi, funk-fuelled breakbeat house headiness.

He exhibits that again on this new EP for Atlantic Thunder which kick off with the gurgling synths and tanging bass notes of 'First Contact'. Silky arps are what ensure it takes flight through the cosmos, though. 'Niburi Ritual' has a darker mood and heavier kick patterns and 'Ionosphere' is a supple and lithe electro workout that channels the best of Detroit. A fine sense of menace and end of the world finality then characterises the excellent closer 'No Escape.'

Review: A few years back, legendary Alt-jazz saxophonist (and original Philip Glass Ensemble member) Dickie Landry handed LCD Soundsystem's Korey Rich a tape of a very NYC-sounding punk-funk track he recorded in his native Louisiana way back in 1986. Finally out, 'Hang The Rich' sounds like a long-lost downtown dub-disco gem that joins the dots between Patrick Adams' more eccentric disco productions, Bristolian punk-funk mavericks Maximum Joy, and McFadden & Whitehead after a fistful of psychedelics. Optimo's JD Twitch provides the obligatory 21st century dancefloor tweak - a stretched out, DJ-friendly revision blessed with bonus jacking drum machine rhythms and some trippy synth motifs. It's breathlessly brilliant, as anyone who has heard him and Optimo partner Jonnie Wilkes DJ over the last three years will confirm.

Review: The deep and soulful house label based in Sweden, Cataleya Music, is a new label that is coming out blazing. Chicago's own Vick Lavender's 'No One's Going To Love You' offers us three strong mixes on one late night 12". The Instrumental keeps things on the up and up while having an overarching disco feeling to it that we just can't get enough of and just the right amount of funk, house and soul. The Coflo balances a bit of Latin feel but also is heavy on the instrumental showcasing doing the damage. Lastly, the dub version is an alternate ride that focuses more on the piano and groove and subtracts the vocals. Whichever one you go with; it should reign supreme on the turntables.

Review: Super-techy three-track jungle business from Sub Code Records, welcoming producers Lavery and Bow Street Runner for an "extremely limited" 12" pressing. Lying somewhere on the interstice of ragga and technical jungle - with a few soul and breakdance samples thrown in - we start off with the ruff sampleage of Lavery's 'Dead Soundboy', which happily chops and changes between pleasingly stereo'ed breaks and halfstep toasted breakdowns. The bread doesn't come out burnt, with Bow Street Runner's 'Butterfly Bass' grilling things just right, with its militant dancehall acapellas and no-holds-barred laserblasts leaving us hardly prepared for the track's sudden soul interjection. The collaborative closer 'My Yout' is by far the wickedest sound, with an untreated flute trill and entrancing break chop bottling a dubious mood; the listener is squarely placed in the narrative position of the yute in question, whom we gather is in the midst of being ordered to pass the rudeboy...
