Curved (hand-stamped 12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: FRINGEWHITE 003. Rel: 11 Feb 20
  1. Curved (4:04)
  2. Curved (Bambounou Hyper Street remix) (4:09)
Review: Bristol bestie badmen Batu and Lurka clash up once again for another Fringe excursion. One track, one remix, "Curved" gets straight to the point with its loosely broken house beats, grumbling bass bubbles and drunken synth scribbles. If you recall the dubby delights of Craig Richards & Lee Burridge's Tyrant project years ago, you're in the right area. Need things a little spicier? Flip for Bambounou's up-tempo twist where the drums are fully broken, the tension is higher and there's a trippy-assed breakdown that will bend your dancefloor's minds. Limited to 300, this won't hang around.

  2. Satin (5:53)
  3. Overground (4:40)
Review: For the latest missive on his surprisingly under-appreciated Blank Mind label, Sam Purcell has turned to rising star Lack, AKA Manchester-based producer Charlie Foy. The EP's three tracks were recorded at various points between 2015 and 2019, initially on his laptop during train journeys and later in his studio. It's an interesting collection of cuts all told, with Foy wrapping deep and spacey chords, bubbly melodies and introspective electronics around off-kilter rhythms that draw influence from a variety of styles. We're particularly enjoying the deep and percussive loneliness of "Satin" and the quiet dancefloor positivity of "Elementary Means", though the whole EP is well worth checking.

Review: Cor blimey governor, this'll put lead in your pencil. Radio 1 broadcaster and all-round badman Rene LaVice teams up with early 2000s donny hitmakers Future Cut for this incredible EP on Metalheadz. "Nine Strings" is pure breakbeat venom. Thunderous bass, grizzly funk and severe amounts of evil in all the right spaces and places, this is real grown up stuff right here. "Eyes" on the B carries just as much weight and horsepower but comes with just a smidgeon of deep dream soul.

  3. Takashi Himeoka - "Another Galaxy" (7:02)
  4. Takashi Himeoka - "Gravity Turn" (6:30)
Review: Diminutive Frenchman Le Loup is a master minimalist who really digs deep here on his two offerings alongside Takashi Himeoka who takes acre of the flipside. "Pop That!!" is a driving late night beat with funky rubber bass, and "Axone" gets more weird and freaky for those late night dances. Himeoka's serves up some superbly clean tones on his wonky hi-tech house cut "Another Galaxy" then "Gravity Turn" closes out in more melancholic but just as deep fashion. These are four fantastic efforts that will soundtrack just about any moment in the night.

Review: Returning to his inimitable solo work after a spate of collaborations and more, Le Motel reappears on new platform Maloca with "Transiro" to capture the heady mix of global influences he distils into club-ready and contemporary forms. The six tracks across the EP is a futuristic fusion of worldly rhythms, broad palette of sound sources and glistening synth work that reflects Le Motel's research in juke, hip hop, techno, and more otherworldly strains from clubs around the globe. The grooves swing down low before soaring up to the heavens, definitely a dynamic, edgy listen you will want to repeat over and over.

  4. You Got Something Special (instrumental) (5:43)
Review: Glitterbox and Defected big cheese Simon Dunmore has long been a fan of Lemelle's 1982 boogie killer "You Got Something Special", and it was reportedly his idea to reissue the track. It was - as ever from Dunmore - a smart move. In its original form (track two), the cut is a near perfect example of soulful, club-ready boogie - all sparkling electronic melodies, loose drum machine beats, eyes-closed guitar motifs, synth-bass and sing-along vocals. This time round, it comes accompanied by the original flipside Instrumental Mix and two fresh revisions. On the A-side you'll find a sweaty, tooled-up edit from Aussie scalpel scene stalwart Dr Packer that drags the track further towards boogie-house territory, while the B-side boasts a more traditional (and reverential) re-edit from KON.

Review: Felix K, Dylan Brownsword and Joe Baker's LEVL strikes again! Previously spotted on Warp outpost Arcola, these four excursions land on Felix's own Nullpunkt and they're every bit as trippy and beguiling as we hoped they'd be. Sitting in a strange tempo-melting, boundary-smashing hinterland, "#4" is all bounces and strange time-signatures, "#2" is the type of halftime jungle you'd expect to be made in the upside down realm of Stranger Things while "#3" raises the pressure and intensity even more with a technoid 170 stampede that wouldn't go amiss on Samurai Horo. Last but not least, "#4" closes the EP on a tribal note. Slower and moodier with percussion layered in a cannon-like way, it leaves you with more questions than answers... Like every Nullpunkt release so far. LEVL up!

  1. Danny J Lewis & Mike City - "I'm So 90's" (5:50)
  2. Marc Cotterell - "Jumpin' 94" (6:28)
Review: Garage house forever! Plastik People keep the fire burning like few others, and they press their intentions up clear as day with Danny J Lewis and Mike City's joyously catchy "I'm So 90s" with its sweet, soulful 'back in the 90s refrain'. It's sentimental and cheeky in equal measure, and the consummate garage house bumper from a label that do it so well. Marc Cotterell then pops up on the B side with "Jumpin '94", an organ soaked sizzler with delicious piano sprinkled on top and all the bump and flex you could wish for.

Review: After appearing on Helena Hauff's Return To Disorder with the fiercely infectious "It's Alive!" 12", L.F.T. lands on Eye For An Eye with more gutter-bound sonics from the grungiest corners of the electro scene. There's as much noirish seduction as gnarly distortion going on throughout this deadly record, from the soundtrack steer of "Atomic Enigma" to the brittle minimal wave delights of the title track. Super punky and lo-fi in all the right places, this 12" once again confirms L.F.T. is one of the strongest voices dealing in DIY electro from the darkside.

Review: Light Touches Records is the latest new label to dedicate itself to finding forgotten gems and previously unknown rarities and it has done a fine job so far. The fourth outing is another smoking one that kicks off with "Hustler", a big rolling groove with sensuous trumpet leads and sliding drums to get you in the mood. "Just A Little Time" is a lush vocal gem that breezes along on noodling bass and jazzy chords, then "Everything" slows right down to a crawl, with exotic percussion and tropical chords all overlaid with some steamy vocal work. Fabulous.

  3. Evaporating Entities (7:30)
  4. Not Present (Aeterna) (4:50)
Review: Releasing an EP right at the end of the year is becoming something of a tradition for Northern Electronics founder Anthony Linell. This time last year we waxed lyrical about his "Sculpting Energy" EP and we're about to do the same for this belated follow-up. He begins in forthright but spaced-out fashion via "Crystal Storms", where buzzing motifs and echo-laden electronics fizz away above a thrusting big room techno groove, before wrapping angular, modular style riffs and creepy electronics around a hybrid techno/electro groove on "Core Field Horizon". Linell opens side B by peppering a deeper techno rhythm with gently pulsing chords and blissful, dream house style melodies ("Evaporating Entities"), while closing cut "Not Present (Aeterna)" is a clanking, off-kilter slab of mind-altering techno hypnotism.

Review: The Lisiere Collectif trio have clocked up some pretty impressive credits so far, not least on Mike Grant's Moods & Grooves. For their next trick, though, they return to their own label LSR for a fourth EP of dreamscape tech. Fist out of the blocks is the intergalactic adventure that is "D - 2403 - 19" with its warped acid bass and twinkling melodic rain. "H - 2403 - 19" is more melancholic, with pensive bass and a nagging lead bringing a sense of loss. "K - 1205 - 19" is the most kinetic of the lot, with brisk drum programming and a whole eco-system of deft sonic details making it as colourful as it is compelling,

Review: Since debuting on Private Persons in 2017, Russian duo Locked Club has gone on to release well received material on TRAM Planet and, more recently, Boys Noize. Here they return to the Private Persons fold with their first EP for the imprint in two years. Fans of no-holds-barred, industrial strength electro/techno fusion should check the brain-melting insanity of funk-fuelled opener "Russian Banya" and "WC", a buzzing, lo-fi electro cut that's as urgent and energetic as a panicked commuter legging it to catch the last train home. Elsewhere, "Whisper" is a strobe-lit chunk of electroclash revivalism and "So Funky" is a serviceable slab of electronic body music.

Review: The 20th year of Billy Nasty's Electrix label kicks off in style with this essential slab of mutant electro from the mighty London Modular Alliance. There's a razor-sharp focus to the drums on "Concerning Irregular Figures", but it's offset by the warmth of bass synth to capture a mood somewhere between early Radioactive Man and Skanfrom. "Exit Strategy" takes things in a freakier direction with plenty of errant blips and squiggles from the group's vast array of gear. "Glove Box" has a darker tone that nods to vintage Dopplereffekt, which Assembler Code's "Rewind Remix" twist things up into a pacey workout that maintains the dread-filled atmosphere perfectly.

Review: Lone is in a glassy-eyed and loved-up mood on this fourth instalment in his excellent "Ambivert Tools" series on R&S. We're particularly enjoying the lilting, soft-focus dreaminess of A-side "Pulsar", where swelling chords and poignant synth-strings sashay seductively between a densely layered, mid-tempo breakbeat groove. The long-serving producer ratchets up the energy on low-slung electro flipside "Oedo 808", another largely dreamy affair that boasts the twin attractions of raw acid style bass and ear-catching TR-808 drum machine cowbells. To finish things off, Lone serves up the EP's most blissfully loved-up moment, "Blue Moon Tree", whose bouncy pianos, fluttering vocal samples and languid chords sound like they were tailor-made for sunrise.

Review: Stee Downes is one of contemporary house music's most prominent vocalists and here he lends his silky tones to Freerange, Defected and OM Records associate, Lovebirds for this new one on South Street. "Want You In My Soul" is a mix of old and new, where disco percussion and cosmic synths nestle alongside a mid tempo house groove with plenty of warmth. Downes' vocals are the loved up icing on the romantic groove cake. Flip over for the "Summer In London Edit" - a more stripped back and direct version, perfect for outdoor stages as the sun beats down.

"AI" is loose, woozy and rolls with some fantastically off-grid breaks, "Spirit Dub" is a steppy odyssey waiting to crack heads while "Machine" is moody, muggy number with more loose kicks, wandering keytar leads and stacks for space for the space-bound vocals. Finally we hit the funkiest cut of the collection: "Breakin'". Dreamy, sleazy and guaranteed to take you to faraway places. Celebrate to automate.

Review: Lewis "LT" Taylor makes his debut on the X-Kalay label after serving up a first ever EP to great acclaim on Rhythm Section last year. This time out he fuses together a wide strain of electronic sounds from space techno to electro and breaks. It's the hyper driven drum funk of "Sputnik (BSS)" that kicks things off in blistering fashion, while "Rest Assured" slows to a crawl, with scattered breaks and suspensory pads all casting you adrift on the dance floor. "Staminize" closes out with surging, intergalactic techno that has a hint of Motor City melancholy. This man is one to watch.
