2 Pac - "Keep Ya Head Up" (4:28)
King Tee - "Played Like A Piano" (4:21)
Review: West Coast Classics brings the heat on this latest super 7" with one fo the biggest name sin the game taking care of the a-side. 2 Pac's 1993 gem 'Keep Ya Head Up' features R&B singer Dave Hollister. The tune was dedicated to his godson Elijah and Latasha Harlins and also points out the abuse black women face in society. It's a cut that brims with warmth and a beat sampled from Zapp's 'Be Alright.' Flip it over for King Tee's slow motion, deep cut funk jewel 'Played Like A Piano' which is another vital tune.

I Choose You (Louie Vega Mid Tempo mix) (9:17)

I Choose You (Vega Tosca Solo Mid Tempo mix) (8:48)
Review: "I Choose You" was initially featured on Foreign Land, the debut album from gospel-soul trio 3 Winans Brothers. Two years on, Louie Vega has decided to give it the remix treatment, serving up four versions across two slabs of wax. He begins with the Dance Ritual Mix, where the trio's smooth vocals - and the impassioned backing singing of Karen Clarke Sheard - ride a shuffling, Latin-influenced house groove. The Mid Tempo Mix offers a musically richer, groovier interpretation, while the Dub focuses more on Clarke Sheard's diva style vocalizing, jazzy piano solos, and Vega's tasty, floor-friendly beats. Speaking of solos, the Masters of Work man cannily brings them to the fore on the closing Axel Solo Mid Tempo Mix.

Review: The 3 Winans Brothers served up their Foreign Land album, from which this single is taken, in 2014. But it could as well as be from any of the proceeding three decades. It is life-affirming gospel, soul and r&b that makes perfect fodder for a remixer like Louie Vega. The gorgeous backing vocals remind in place, as do the main male voices, but the drums are either drawn out and made all the more soulful or shorted up and energised for the club across these four superb mixes. House music doesn't come more authentic or stirring than this. 838848-01

Review: Debutants 4D & Krunky create ravey and funked-up minimal techno, taking its cues from early Detroit techno and northern bleep styles. The grooves to be heard on the Humanoid label's are as cute as the label art: from the strobed-out shuffle 'n' roll of 'Oplescot', to the west coast breaks of 'Stunt Bubble' calling to mind the mid '90s sounds of Northern California, and the hyper aware boompty boomp of closer 'Seasaw'.

Review: Muddy, dreamy and dubby new dance cuts from THREADS, who invite four of their mainstays to the fore with a dry and entraining take on trance. Kebab Traume (in English, 'Kebab Dream') wafts a mouth-watery cylinder of sonic meat under our noses with 'Nova Trance', which melds stabs, basses and kicks with all the certainty of a honey badger. Meanwhile, Mario Liberti's 'Treat Me Good' urges us to do just that via the mode sultry sampled vocals and funk bass whirls.

A1 People - "Do It" (Metamatics remix)

Silicon Scally - "Relay"
Matt Chester - "November Pathways"
CiM - "Recursive"
Review: Since Zip and Villalobos made it one of their coveted deep digs to be heard pealing out of a thousand after hours sessions, the Metamatics remix of A1 People has been a teasingly out of reach dream grab for many a minimal electro head. Now Yossi Amoyal has done the good deed of getting the track remastered and repressed as part of his Fluere series toasting 15 years of Sushitech. As well as that masterclass of elegant machine funk, there's also Kosmogonik's mind-bendingly brilliant 'Circuitry', Silicon Scally's body-popping electro-noir 'Relay' and Matt Chester's melancholic 'November Pathways' to keep your up-all-night marathon sets peppered with spangled surprises.

Acasual - "Her"
Tominori Hosoya - "Thinking Of The Days"
Kiddmisha & Apoena - "Dancin"
Jonno & Tommo - "Mystic Feelings"
Review: The latest offering on Owen Jay's Batti Batti label features a cast of characters doing different but equally excellent things within the realm of deep house. Acasual is up first, presenting a reflective tour through lingering chords and swirling pads perfect for rainy spring days, while Tominori Hosoya goes one further with the soul-stirring ambience of "Thinking Of The Days". Kiddmisha & Apoena set light to the B-side with the restrained but utterly on-point depth charge "Dancin", and then Jonno & Tommo round the record out with the sultry "Mystic Feelings", making this a complete package of high grade house music from the heart.

Tarmar (7:21)
Review: Sometime Northern Electronics contributor Acronym made his first outing on Stockholm stable Stilla Ton back in June 2018, in the process serving up a trio of trance-inducing techno tracks. Here he returns to the imprint with an EP produced in collaboration with fast-rising female and occasional studio buddy Kali Malone. What's on offer is an intriguing blend of soundscapes and club cuts, with off-kilter ambient cuts such as "Call From The Tower" and closer "Tarmar" coming accompanied by poignant, sunrise-ready modular techno cuts such as the dancefloor-ready "A Sunspot". There are dark, trippy cuts, too (see the throbbing "Tempest Of Joy" and the buzzing thrust of "Legs Of The Fly"), resulting in a versatile and well-judged collection of cuts.

Zobol - "Data Wars" (5:01)
Review: Exit Planet Earth continues its exploration of the world of electro universe with an expansive, extended six track EP, featuring The Advent x Zein Ferreira, DeFeKT, London Modular Alliance, Konertymi and Zobol. The Advent, whose weekly Gardening Club residency in the mid-90s helped to drag electro out of the realms of the retro and back into the future, team up with Zein Ferreira for a Kraftwerk-on-speed extended mix of 'CarpeDiem', before London Modular Alliance's more moderately paced but still squiggle and bleep laced 'Lump of Coal' plus a 'beats' breakdown for the DJs. The B-side brings us the acid-powered 'Pulssi' by Konerytmi, the bouncy, breakdance-friendly 'Radar' by DeFeKT, and the relatively pure, optimistic sonics of Zobol's 'Data Wars'. Thumbs up all round.

Kung - "Zyklon"
Review: Last seen on Lifted Music, Aeph returns to another regular haunt in Bad Taste for their eleventh 12" release which features a rather potent collaboration with his studio mate Kung. The Italian and Spanish producers obviously possess winning studio chemistry as "Wozyths" is a certified dancefloor killer driven by a restless energy - all rhythmic switch-ups and unexpected melodic variations. On the flip Kung goes on a solo flex for the Nuero-heavy behemoth that is "Zyklon". Approach with caution and seek out the digital version for two extra tracks from the London-based producer.

The Riot (Afshin & Kiss My Black Jazz edit) (6:00)
Review: Something a little different from G.A.M.M here, as Parisian DJ Afshin joins forces with the mysterious Kiss My Black Jazz to offer up two incendiary edits. The real surprise killer is A-side "Trouble In My Way", which subtly turns a blues-era recording of a traditional slave sing-along into a handclap-heavy chunk of infectious gospel-house brilliance. It takes a little time to build up, but when the heavier beats drop midway through you'll have dancers eating out of the palm of your hand. Flipside "The Riot" sees them make merry with a Hammond-heavy chunk of 1960s jazz-funk, extending and reworking the cut to make it suitably sweaty, heavy and life affirming.

Make It Reggae (Afshin & Black Jazz edit)
Review: Earlier in the month, Parisian producer Afshin joined forces with Kiss My Black Jazz and served up a brilliant, two-track missive of jazz-funk and blues-house reworks on G.A.M.M. Here they reunite for round two. This time round, they begin by reworking a shuffling, chant-along Afro-Brazilian gem of unknown origin, extending the carnival-ready percussive intro before unleashing the shuffling, sun-kissed samba rhythm and some of the sweetest vocals this side of a sing-along in a chocolate factory. Over on side B they give a similar tune to a killer chunk of reggae-funk fusion rich in warm dub bass, bongo-laden beats, bluesy guitar solos, fuzzy horns and James Brown style guttural vocals.

Review: Here's a big tribal banger that'll certainly be giving the drum heads what they need. Two tracks on this one, with the a-side "Slave Drum Your Face" mix loaded with nasty percussion, seriously sultry female vocals and dark bass hits slamming the groove all over the place. Dark, sexy house that'll certainly bring the floor to climax. On the flip the "Miami Mix" has a more techy, electro edge balancing, out the tribal beats. Pounding, dark house that'll work nicely for the Calderone and Chus & Ceballos heads.

Head honchos Agents Of Time venture down an electro route with "East Coast", as do the ever impressive London Modular Alliance on the hypnotic "Buck One". Man of the moment Aussie Jensen Interceptor channels classic Drexciyan aesthetics on "Manix" before homeboys and label staples Hiver come through with the slinky and hypnotic tech house of "Stasys" and Detroit veteran Kris Wadsworth makes a surprising appearance with some slow burning minimalism displayed on closer "Abroad".

Review: Now three releases deep; new Finnish indie Mood Of The Era is really hitting its stride now with its first six-track V/A EP. Digging into the foundations, each cut resonates with timeless textures and aesthetics; "Let Me Tell You" swaggers with a broken shuffle and an iconic vocal sample, "Life In The FCP" resonates with old acid house sentiments while "Forgotten Lands" is perfect iced-out introspection with atmospheric classic electro elements. Meanwhile on the flip "Finally I Saw You" is a cosmic sci-fi soul whirlwind, "Syvael" bumps and shakes with a stumbling post-garage two-step and DOS closes the show with an authentic homage to the warehouse golden era on "1990". Glaciation
Review: Alaska has always been a fan of Kirsty Hawkshaw - dating back to 1996 and LTJ Bukem's Good Looking Records classic
'Close your Eyes' by The Chameleon - so to capture the talents of Miss Hawkshaw for a full-on vocal 12" is something that
Arctic Music are pretty proud of.
'Juneau' enters with Alaska's trademark ambient loop hooks laying a cold and ethereal platform for Kirsty to deliver and when
the fast breakbeats kick in everything becomes clear and you know you are listening to a timeless and beautiful piece of music
in real-time. As 'Juneau' progresses, strings, choir pads and bleeps emerge with the vocal chorus capturing the audience with
its simplicity as the breaks roll and let the vocals breath right up to an ad-lib crescendo of pure quality. Listen and enjoy.
Alaska flexes his musical muscles with 'Glaciation' and takes you on a glacial journey through the Arctic Circle. Kirsty Hawkshaw
supplies the vocal harmonies to beautiful perfection as the breaks glide the music alongside the deep and low sinewave bass,
so sit back, relax and enjoy the sounds of 'Glaciation'. This is one you definitely won't hear on a d&b club sound system.

Review: Frank Music look to main man Johannes Albert for the second volume of their Rarities series and he covers plenty of musical ground in the process. First up, Benjamin Frohlich's 'Tivoli' gets a super upbeat and summery 4/4 disco re-treatment to kick things off, before Albert steps up again to tackle Kayroy's 'Identification Unknown' with future-facing disco synths. The version of 'Fomo' he serves up is more dirty and danceable, with acid lines and twinkling arps. Last of all, Albert's remix of Leon Revol - 'Acid Is Rolling' is an undulating cut with muscular beats and crispy snares.

Even so, there's still something extra-special about "Take A Chance", a thoroughly deep, soulful and lilting excursion full of rolling, African-influenced percussion, eyes-closed trumpet solos and warm, evocative vocals. Alce's hero Larry Heard provides the remixes, firstly under his given name (a typically deep, soulful and dreamy interpretation) and secondly as Mr Fingers. It's these "Ambient Acid" versions - built around restless, lopped electronics and the original's sublime trumpet - that really stand out. Brilliant from start to finish.

Review: Bringing one of those vocals that will be nagging in the noggin long after the lights have come up; Ali Love and Kali are in prime pop-picking mode with this new single on Crosstown Rebels. The structure of the track is still in keeping with the label's slick take on house music; while the vocals intone a message of massaged ego that translates smoothly to Waze & Odyssey's more brooding remix. Maceo Plex comes in with a more romantic vision for the track, laying out thick reams of synth in a seductive late night style that can bleed outwards to fill a space large or small.

This one is from Rasheeda Ali, a new name that might be familiar to anyone who heard Kai's 'Sheed's Move' tune from a previous EP. She has also been on stage with none other than Jeff Mills and here her flute skills come to the fore with production from Kai. Take this VA release as a fine case in point, welcoming the bulbous acid strutter 'Satisfied' by Aline Umber to shake its shoulders next to Calvert's own playful deep house joint 'The Foil'. Direct from Soul Deep bossman Scott Allen and partner in vibes Jrumhand, it's a Calibre-esque sample-heavy hummer that rolls infinitely with detailed flourishes. Kid Ginseng - "Chrome Belt Buckle" (feat DJ Quest-Questosahn) (6:26)
Cybereign - "My Feel" (5:17)
Review: Connecticut label, Kraftjerks, has made a name for itself as the east coast's prime electro label. Bringing us the sixth volume of their popular Machine Funk Is Our Game series they've pulled together an impressive array of artists including Alonzo, Daniel Savio, Deroboter, Kid Ginseng, and Cybereign. 'Nikki Don't Save Me' is the powerful, bass heavy track that opens the compilation. Veering through meteor fields and firing through wormholes, this is tonally dark electro at its best. 'Chrome Belt Buckle (feat. Questosahn)', a scratch-inflected journey through warped vocals and frenetic percussion, is another highlight. Perfect for the club or cruising down the highway, this is a cornerstone record for electro fans.

Cybereign - "Breathing Apparatus" (Kid Ginseng remix) (4:32)
Bart Karlos - "Shaftwerk" (4:25)
Review: For those interested in punchy, forthright and funk-fuelled techno, Kraftjerkz ongoing Machine Funk Is Our Game series should be essential listening. There's plenty to get the blood pumping on the label's latest instalment, the fifth in total and first of 2021, beginning with ALONZO's Drexciya-style opener, 'Shitto Maltese'. Konertymi opts for energy aplenty on the fizzing bass, punchy beats and sci-fi synths of 'Replikantti', while Zarcon's 'TicTac' is an acid-fired chunk of electronic funk and DJ Di'jital's 'Jit It Up' is ghetto-tech for wannabe astronauts everywhere. Elsewhere, King Ginseng adds a little stomp to the '80s electro style sounds of Cybereign's 'Breathing Apparatus' and Bart Karlos's 'Shaftwerk' is as deliciously sleazy and spacey as you'd expect.

Heart Of The Groove (Ecstatic B-Boy remix) (4:27)
This Ain't No Game (Go! Go! Go!) (3:43)
Review: Heat Rock Records' latest double-dose of cut and paste madness is as incendiary as you'd expect, with both tracks adding elements of classic dancefloor workouts to fat beats and plenty of added percussion. Chicago's Altered Tapes handles side A, thrillingly re-imagining Dee-Lite classic 'Groove is In The Heart' by utilising more percussive elements (including a killer, cowbell-driven drum-break) from some of the tunes that the New York band originally sampled on their chart-topping house classic. B-Boys and B-Girls the world over will love it! On the flip, Bay Area native King Most combines the vocals from a Salsoul disco classic to a backing track that cleverly combines elements from a Ramsay Lewis style jazz number and a JB's-esuqe funk bomb.

Pale (18:42)
Calling (20:13)
Review: Pale Calling sees Black Truffle boss and all round experimental maven Oren Ambarchi collaborating with Kassel Jaeger and James Rushford for an album consisting of two long form compositions laid down in Paris back in 2014. Featuring killer artwork from Sunn O))) man Stephen O'Malley, and mastered by Rashad Becker, Pale Calling is aptly described as "a mysterious space of slowly cycling electronics, distracted vocal mumbles and often unidentifiable field recordings." It arrives in a busy year for Ambarchi's Black Truffle following long players from Charlemagne Palestine and improvisational trio AMM, and proves to be a delicious listen that will appeal to fans of the recent Jefre Cantu-Ledesma and Felicia Atkinson album.

Peter Raw - "Brotherhood" (5:52)
HDV - "Digital Delight" (5:44)
Kosh - "The Mess" (5:08)
Review: Sounds Benefit founder Tom Joyce cast his net far and wide when sniffing out cuts to include on the label's latest multi-artist EP. There's plenty of little-known talent on show across the four tracks that make-up the EP, which come from artists based in Frankfurt, Paris and - most surprisingly - Casablanca. We're particularly enjoying the hybrid electro/spacey tech-house bounce of Peter Raw's wonderfully swinging "Brotherhood", though the deep and melodious electro bounce of Kosh's "The Mess" is also really rather good. Elsewhere, Manuel Schatz and Rob Amboule offer up some bold and snappy Motor City techno/acid house fusion, while HDV's "Digital Delight" is raw, analogue, funky and decidedly alien in tone.

Amex/Kaiza - "Sourcream"
Budoka - "Whiplash" (remix)
Review: Now on TILT004 Amex/Kaiza and Budoka go for a shared release to bring their two different approaches to technoid D'n'B together on one vinyl: innovative Techno-D'n'B and solid Neurofunk. Amex/Kaiza - "Sourcream" Mannheim's finest deliver another dancefloor-smashing stepper, designed to take the listener on a trip into the world of uncompromising Techno-D'n'B. Like "Shrinz" it is a harsh and bouncing tool to move everybody’s ass. After a DJ-friendly intro, the drop and stabs paying tribute to Detroit, the tune seems to be on its highest point, but just then it drops deeper into counter-dynamic arrangements and doubles the pace. Again, the genuine beat and percussion works in combination with the on-point use of Techno stabs and vocals as lead and rhythmic elements roll the hell out of the devil, displaying the way tunes should be nowadays according to Amex/Kaiza's point of view. Budoka - "Whiplash" RMX The logo side of TILT004 exemplifies the flip side of the label sound: subtle fx and electronic elements over a huge midrange/sub bass construct and an also rolling yet more organic beat, still keeping some melody. The intro builds up a deep, catchy and almost housey atmosphere only to drop into Budoka`s very own interpretation of massive Neurofunk to tear up dancefloors. Various fills sum up and turn to a further role in the ever-playing antagonism between the straight groove and the atmospheric deepness. (The original tune "Whiplash" had been produced in 2001 and got positive feedback on dubplate, but has never been released on vinyl. Now, years later, Budoka has made a remix while upgrading the sound quality to D'n'B standards of today and adding some new structure and elements, eventually creating a new tune.

Review:
Hardcore steppers crew unite: King Alpha and Fikir Amlak come together for a big one here that features the rib-rattling "Lalibela" on the A-side. It's got steel plated drums and deadly bass, as well as plenty of swagger and brightly lit synths. The vocal toasts add further weight and a touch of exotica, while two dub versions pare things back to the core and crucial elements. "Addis Ababa" is a more freaky cut with modern effects and twisted synths adding elements of industrialism. Two more dubs take the tune in more summery, airy directions, and both are utterly essential.

Review: Time Horizon's second episode enlists another team of dancefloor snipers delivering 5 brain-dancing tunes crafted appositively for late night use. After his appearance on the first XCPT record, Andrea is back on the label with his unmistakable shuffling drums and a heavy square bassline followed by Anybody Anytime covering the uptempo-zone with a rotative junglistic tool dressed with celestial pads; closing the A side TANS reveals his new robot alias The Sympathizer providing a neurotic electro progression fully based on his modular system. Flipping the records you will find two XCPT homies bringing the audience straight into Matera landscapes: Farron gets a 909 unceasing toms orchestra surrounded by his atmospheric leads while Kreggo illustrates clearly his hypnotic mid-low vision of breakbeat locked by a mystic bass for the whole track.

Review: London's Tropical Disco Records returns this week with Vol 26 in their esteemed label series. Andy Bach serves up the acidified late night dancefloor heater 'Needin' You'on the first side followed by Kikko Esse's sweltering Latin-infused number 'Reloaded' featuring one killer horns section. On the second side, Sam Pills gets seriously lo-slung on the smooth balearica of 'New Day' and finally the label chief goes poolside on the sexy, funky broken beat/nu-jazz of 'Booty Call'.

Forever Ravers (Anna Raving In Space mix) (5:33)
Review: Last year Brazilian DJ/producer Ana Miranda joined Kompakt Extra following years spent building her reputation via fine releases on such labels as Novamute, Twin Turbo, Yoshitoshi and Terminal M. For her third release on the long-serving German label she's joined forces with another scene queen, the incomparable Miss Kittin. The pair has produced a raw, driving dancefloor beast that's bigger than Donald Trump's ego and infinitely more alluring. "Forever Ravers" is heavy, intense and forthright, with stylized vocal snippets and razor sharp electronic motifs surging above a thumping groove. Miranda offers a different take on the track on side B, opting for bleeping and panicked electronics and spacey bleep melodies.

Review: Radar Radio selector Amy Becker follows up her TRX set with another clutch of unreleased specials from some of London's freshest free-thinkers. Logos twist on Apple's "De Siegalizer" is a retro take on future breaks, grime crew Ygg coat Sir Spyro's "Side By Side" with barbed lyrical icing, DVA's take on "Mata Lo" militantly marches out of Metropolis while Deamonds takes DJ Haus on a slow trip down a dark slimy grime alley. Becker's connections and nose for futuristic sound is second to none right here.

Since then they've been remixed by Prins Thomas and gravitated naturally towards Will Saul's Aus label. The turn of a New Year saw the pair enter Jupiter for Aus and now they are back on the label experiencing Motion Blur. Intriguingly the A Side features collaborations whilst the flip finds Appleblim and Komon dropping solo jams. The title track is a perfect slice of UK hybridism whilst seek out Appleblim's closing "Echo's Retreat" which descends into Bristol electro territory.
