And this is one such case as the project is centered around 99-year-old Iboja Wandall-Holm who sings about memories from her childhood growing up in Eastern Europe. Review: Headed up by Benin-born Kaleta - a guitarist who has previously worked with Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade and Lauryn Hill - Super Yamba Band is a New York collective whose decidedly psychedelic fusions of Afrobeat, Highlife and Afro-funk have been getting rave reviews. "Medaho" is their debut album and it more than lives up to the hype. To say Hollie Kenniff has set out to try and tear through your emotional brick wall in the sweetest and most gentile way possible is full understatement of the century territory. Following up on her spellbinding 2021 ambient masterpiece, The Quiet Drift, her latest offering to the world almost sounds like a memory even before you know what it's called.

The remix album is probably pretty hard to crack in terms of putting it together. On the one hand, you want a broad selection of producers to take the work and make it new again. But there's also a very real risk of winding up with a bunch of random tracks with no real coherent thread to ensure the LP is actually going to get enough people buying to warrant engineering, mastering, and pressing costs.
Khruangbin have certainly cracked it with these takes on tracks from their most recent and perhaps most lush long form outing to date. We have sophisticated micro house, percussive slo-mo disco, slick-to-the-touch downbeat grooves and surrealist pop, all of which work both individually and together, the result being a record that not only knows its own mind, it can easily convince others, too.

Review: One person who surely never dubbed too much was the prolific and pioneering King Tubby, but that hasn't stopped Patate Records from putting together a third volume of his work with that sub-title. All of the 12 tracks on this release are classic, rare and/or unreleased and they were ll produced by the man himself in the late 70s during the gold age of the genre. Rodguel Sinclair aka Blackbeard is the producer of the material and his backing band The Ring Craft Posse, which included noted reggae heads like Sly & Robbie, Family Man and Carlton Barrett, all feature next to some of the era's finest vocalists - Delroy Wilson, Horace Andy and Johnny Clarke amongst them. Basically, this is as authentic and essential a collection of 70s reggae as you can get.

Review: The Kinks' fifth album Something Else by the Kinks continued the band's move towards eccentric baroque pop. The music-hall-inflected style centres around the introspective lyrics of Ray Davis, the album also marking the final involvement of American producer Shel Talmy. Nicky Hopkins plays keys on many of the tunes and backing vocals come from Ray's wife Rasa. 'Waterloo Sunset' is the standout tune here and one of the band's most famous singles. Review: The ominous clangs and thuds grow louder and louder, louder and louder, atmosphere of increasing tension turning into borderline panic as timbre's brooding menace threatens to erupt into snarling aggression. Suffice to say, like a good chunk of Diabel, 'Wedding Dance Macabre' is disinterested in niceties and would likely run anyone through who is looking for background music. The fact this is one of Andrzej Korzy?ski's scores for one of Andrzej ?u?awski's movies only makes that feat more phenomenal, given the role soundtracks often play in cinema.

Review: A stunning album of big band music from Finnish composer, Kerkko Koskinen, featuring Linda Fredriksson on saxophone and the UMO Helskinki Jazz Orchestra, Agatha 2 is a sequel of sorts to their original Agatha album released in 2007. Tracing Koskinen's signature immensely emotive and dramatic approach to composition, this album sits beautifully between moody atmospheres and fully immersive rushes of cinematic sound. It is clear that Fredrikkson and Koskinen share a clear vision with her solo performances shining against the undulating orchestral backdrop. Taking on a distinctly melancholic and nostalgic mood, especially with the pieces 'Promenade' and 'Piana', the drums are positioned at a purposeful distance to the driving dynamics of the composition, adding a hint of melodic colour to the overall piece rather than being a central force. An inventive project that journeys forwards and backwards in time.

Review: After the massive impact of Vex'd in the breakthrough years of dubstep, it was big news when Jamie Teasdale chose to swerve in his own direction and emerge as Kuedo. Released in 2011, Severant was a bold statement of intent which didn't wholly shirk what had come before, but placed emphasis on the kind of romantic synthesis you'd readily associate with Vangelis and saw trap and other influences sneaking into the mix. Review: Rather bizarrely, Fela's London Scene was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in 1971, but didn't get a UK release until the mid 1990s. This is the first time it has appeared on wax since. While the legendary Afrobeat pioneer and his equally revered backing band, Africa '70, may have been in unusual surroundings, the music showcased on the album was pure Nigerian Afrobeat gold. With Fela in fine form on the mic, and Africa '70 providing typically punchy, horn-heavy backing, tracks such as "E Gbe Mi O", "Buy Africa", and "Fight To The Finish" are every bit as good as anything they recorded in their Lagos studio. "Who're You", with its' changes of intensity and gentle progressions, is particularly good.

Review: Now getting its utmost-deserved 25th Anniversary reissue on Damaged Goods, Here I Am I Always Am is the only solo album by Kyra, one of the members of the all-female Kent punk band Headcoatees, whom in turn began as the backing band for Billy Childish's Thee Headcoats. Review: Tshona from Pat Matshikiza, Basil Mannenberg Coetzee and Kippie Moeketsi is one of the many celebrated jazz albums to have come from South Africa. Canadian Eric Warner's Wearebusybodies label has the rights to this latest reissue of it after the last one sold out and became nearly as costly as an original. It is a joyous affair with light, airy gores, keys and drums on the title tune, and something of a reggae swagger to 'Stop & Start' with its more conversational wind leads. 'Umgababa' is another blissed out and laidback summer soundtrack and 'Kippie's Prayer' end with a nice upbeat feel.

Review: Leipzig has a lot to answer for. The East German city has a very hushed reputation for being the place Berlin once was, albeit on a far smaller scale, but the sprawl is nonetheless changing at a rapid rate. So while you're still likely to find an abundance of squat parties, exceptional but internationally unsung club spaces, and memorable dive bars, some institutions are vanishing. The 'off-space' Kardamom is sadly one of the more recent losses.
Just before the place disappeared, though, Travel By Goods boss Arthur Boto Conley decided to bring together Kassem Mosse and Mix Mup for a live performance that would form this album, circa 2019. Comprised of on-the-fly remixes from the label's back catalogue, it's a grainy, sample-heavy, often off-centre and off-beat deep dive into collages of sounds, drums, loops, hooks and ideas. Basically, you'll wish you were at the show, but that's a feeling you'll have to put up with.

Their latest project welcomes the legendary David Sylvian into the mix alongside Kazuko Hohki, who was in 80s synth pop oddity Frank Chickens amongst other projects.
