Vente Pa Ca (feat Jimena Angel, Jah Sazzah & Poirier) (4:34)
Vente Pa Ca (feat Jimena Angel, Jah Sazzah & Poirier - Poirier remix) (3:47)
Review: This is a global single with a great story that starts with an afro-funk groove made by Italian Jah Sazzah. He wanted a vocal for it so turned to Nickodemus who handed his own touches and then sent it Grammy-nominated Colombian vocalist Jimena Angel. The result is a vibrant Afro tune with vivid melodies. Remixer Poirier is a legend in Latin music circles. The Montreal man has formerly been associated with Ninja Tune and is synonymous with lots of classy remixes and fresh takes on a modern Afro-Caribbean sound. This is another one that reworks the ring into a more bouncy and infectious sound with gorgeous vocals and a clean arrangement that allows the drums and perc to shine.

A Thing Of Beauty (3:25)
Drums Of Beauty (mono) (3:21)
Review: The new joint on Wildcards comes from a hornsman sometimes known as Lucky Brown, sometimes as plain old Joel Ricci. He's done plenty of excellent work in the past, but after a few quiet years he's back in the saddle and this new single really takes the cake. 'A Thing Of Beauty' is a lilting slice of instrumental funk which lets Ricci's playing soar, and it's all rendered with a dusty, red-lining charm which will make it all the hotter in the dance as well as appealing to crate diggers hankering for more hot n' heavy grooves to sample. Speaking of which, the flip 'Drums Of Beauty' gives you breaks for days - B-boys and B-girls take heed.

Keyboard Study No 2 (4:28)
Review: We Jazz Records welcomes a label debutant here for a tasty little 7". Gothenburg-based Finnish pianist Joona Toivanen is the man and he offers up a fresh take on Terry Riley's 'Keyboard Study' with trusty help from Tapani Toivanen on bass and Olavi Louhivuori of Superposition on drums, both of whom complete his trio. It is a heady, minimalistic piece with a deeply introspective mood. On the a-side is an edit of his future album cut 'Except For' which is another complex, moody piece of inward-looking jazz minimalism with gorgeously mellifluous

Just Another Rainbow (5:34)
Review: Two of the likeliest lads from Manchester team up for the first day release of their new collaborative project. And its something of a full circle moment, with Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher previously citing Stone Roses hero John Squire in a list of formative teenage musical inspirations, who, in turn, first encountered the former when both bands were working the same studio, respectively recording Definitely Maybe and The Second Coming. The pair first shared honours three years after that, co-writing 'Love Me & Leave Me' for Squire's relatively short-lived outfit, The Seahorses, in 1997. Skip forward to 2022 and Squire joined the Gallaghers et al on stage at Knebworth, reprising his appearances for renditions of 'Champagne Supernova' at the band's 1996 shows, spurring the idea to do something together again. Here's the result - and it's precisely what the duo should sound like together.

Carlton Jumel Smith - "I Can't Love You Anymore" (4:35)
Cold Diamond & Mink - "I Can't Love You Anymore" (instrumental) (4:34)
Review: Since making his debut back in the early 1990s, Carlton Jumel Smith has periodically popped up on a variety of soulful house and modern soul releases. Here the little-known vocalist takes a different approach, re-casting himself as a throaty, James Brown influenced '70s soul singer. He's at his heartfelt, full-throttle best on "Can't Love You Any More", a deliciously heavy and authentic chunk of Southern-fried deep soul complete with additional falsetto parts from fellow singer Pratt. The key to the track's success is the fantastic backing provided by Cold Diamond & Mink. Proof is provided on the flip via the band's effortlessly good instrumental take.

Timba Version (3:19)
Review: This classic wedge of roots originally came back in 1977 but has a distinctly futuristic edge even now. The license for the reissue comes from Jasaro's Everand Thompson which will be great news to collectors as currently an original of this, even though no one can be found on second-hand markets, will cost you the best part of three hundred quid. Everand Thompson and Jasaro really struck gold with 'Suffering' which pairs fat dub and tweaked synth energy with a meaningful and pained vocal. The Simba version fleshes out the heavy riddim with more effects and extra vocals.

Ain't That Loving You (4:46)
Review: Owing to his undeniable skills as a belter, Roland Johnson's honourable title is the 'Elder Statesman of Saint Louis Soul'. Testifying for this comes a new 7" single from the 71-year-old soul legend. The A-side, 'Best Outta You', brings uptempo joy to a duetting ballad of mutual love and limerence, while 'Ain't That Loving You' rides the comedown, being a comparatively relaxed slow jam charting the blissful feeling of settling down with your soulmate. Backing up Johnson comes the instrumental talents of Kevin O'Connor and Paul Niehaus IV.

Review: Italy's Tesla Groove serves up some more of is supercharged soul sounds on this super limited new 7". Opener 'The Jungle' is a deep cut soul tune that is all the better for the gravelly tones of vocalist Gene Jackson. His voice speaks of a man who has really lived his life, and as such he manages to convey a world of emotion in amongst some lo-fi old school soul rhythms and whirring organ chords. On the flip side is 'I Can't Ignore It' which is even more heartbroken, with heavy, nagging drums and sombre trumpets adding weight to Jackson's already forlorn delivery.

Review: Teddy Powell and Zee Desmondes are The Jack Moves, a contemporary disco and hip hop outfit who here link with unknown newbies The People Of Newark and Larry Hamm for this tidy new 7" on Star Creature. 'Horror Games' has a squelchy synth bass line that carries the loose drum work and bustling methane of background vocals and found sounds. In James' hands, backed up by a fully decked out Motown-ready band, the track becomes an uplifting stomper with a dazzling arrangement from Willie Hoskins. Review: Jaribu Afrobeat Arkestra are an entirely unique phenomenon, a Japanese collective pushing forward Neo-Afrobeat with heavy influence of the classic Japanese jazz sound and the long tradition of covering iconic western soul/funk tracks. Aretha Franklin's 'Rock Steady' is a collaboration with fellow Japanese artist Tina (aka Luv Tina), a decorated vocal powerhouse in the early 2000s R&B landscape, culminating in a mind-boggling genre mashup that defies expectations. The J.A.A. chorus section matches Tina's power perfectly with the blaring jazz instrumental, with phenomenal sax and trumpets. Stop Ranking Dub (3:10)
Review: Reggae collectors may already be aware of 'When You Gonna Stop', a now exceedingly hard to find UK reggae release. It was recorded by Black Slate, one of the most active British reggae bands of the period, under the alternative Jeduthum alias, produced by Robert Fearon, and initially released in 1978 on the short-lived JBC label. It remains a superb slab of conscious, warming and weighty roots reggae, with great performances from the band and an impassioned lead vocal that tends towards the world-weary. Equally as impressive is the flipside 'Stop Ranking Dub', which - as you'd expect - provides a perfect dub-wise interpretation. A genuinely essential reissue.

One of these in original for will cost you a few quid so it's nice to have good sounding copies on fresh wax available once more. Ken Parker's A-side cut 'It's Alright' is short at under three minutes but boy does it hit a super sweet spot with his delicate falsetto vocal over rickety roots low ends and rolling, warming bass. Review: On the latest edition of their excellent Soul Essentials series, Outta Sight has decided to bring together two versions of 'Ordinary Joe', a seemingly perennial favourite written by the late, great Terry Callier. His celebrated 1972 recording - all bold, sing-along choruses, organ stabs, jangling piano and lolloping grooves - breezes its way across side A, while Jerry Butler's earlier version, laid to tape in 1970, sits on side B. His version is much more expansive and musically detailed than Callier's take, with superb production from Gamble & Huff and some brilliant orchestral arrangements courtesy of Donny Hathaway. Now, with the assistance of toaster Junior Dell, he's turned his attention to Rebel MC - now better known as Congo Natty - and his late 80s hip-house classic 'Street Tuff'. Given that the Rebel MC version sampled a Toots and the Maytals track, turning it into a dusty, head-nodding, analogue-rich reggae jam makes perfect sonic sense. It is another top 7" version of Fatboy Slim's megahit 'Praise You', in authentic rocksteady style, performed by Jamaican vocal group Junior Dell & The D Lites, who've been active since the 1960s. "Mi haffi praise you", gleefully intones Dell, against an impressive interpretive backdrop of jubilant brass and cabareting bubbles. The B-side procures a more curious and laid-back instrumental, Woodfield Rd Allstars' 'Cool Cool Runnings'. Do not sleep.

A Tribe Called Quest - "Sucka Nigga" (4:03)
Jack Wilkins - "Red Clay" (4:03)
Review: We're big fans of these educational 7"s that often crop up, with a legendary hip hop jam on one side and the source of some its samples appearing on the flip. This time out we get A Tribe Called Quest's deep cut 'Sucka N***a' - which is taken from their legendary Midnight Marauders album - with its buttery rhymes and funky bass buried deep within. Jack Wilkins's 'Red Clay' on the flip isn't that much of a deviation. Though it's slower and free from the rhymes, it is a brilliantly effective and emotive cut. More like this please.

Review: Willie Junei Lee was a guitarist active mainly throughout the 1970s. He toured with Curtis Mayfield and Albert King, so we're sure you'll agree that this constitutes enough social proof for his inclusion in Blue Note's latest reissue campaign. 'Let's Ride' is Lee's first ever single: channeling the spiritual rock influences of the likes of Santana and Jimi Hendrix, this is a guitar masterpiece for the ages.

Say She Sh - "Wrap Myself Up In Your Love" (3:43)
Jim Spencer - "Wrap Myself Up In Your Love" (4:04)
Review: Say She She is the psychedelic soul group from Brooklyn that's exploded onto the scene since their debut in 2019. Receiving critical acclaim for their two albums to date, and the pleasure of touring Europe and North America, the Nile Rodgers-inspired female trio even got a video message of approval from the legend himself. Authentic and organic are two words that fit the classically trained troupe to a tea and, in the great soul tradition, covers are a necessity. Jim Spencer's 1979 attempt at foraying into disco 'Wrap Myself Up in Your Love' wasn't received amazingly at the time, but thanks to the adoration of archive label The Numero Group, the song has seen a resurgence in covers and fans. The original vocal is zany and expressive against some jangly funk guitars, whilst Say She She's rendition hones in on the sultry aspect of the track. Guitars are muted down to transform the song into a lovemaking slow jam, wind passages are introduced and the vocal is subtly powerful and sexy. This 7" contains both Spencer's original track and the interpretation by the trio, pressed on white vinyl.

Review: Brooklyn-based psychedelic soul group Say She She have exploded onto the scene since their debut in 2019. Receiving critical acclaim for their two albums to date, and multiple TV performances, the Nile Rodgers-inspired female trio even got a video message of approval from the legend himself. Organic and authentic are two words that fit the classically trained troupe to a tea and, in the great soul tradition, covers are a necessity. Jim Spencer's 1979 track 'Wrap Myself Up in Your Love' didn't get much attention at the time - his attempt at doing disco wasn't well received - but thanks to the adoration of archive label The Numero Group, the song has seen a resurgence in covers and fans. The original vocal is expressive and powerful against some jangly funk guitars, whilst Say She She's rendition hones in on the sultry aspect of the track. Guitars are muted down to transform the song into a lovemaking slow jam, wind passages are introduced and the vocal is subtly powerful and sexy. When It Hits (2:37)
Review: Staten Island's The Jazztronauts return to Nu Tone with a smooth cruising single which capitalises on the slick fusion style they do so well. There's a reflective, season-shifting mood to 'This Thing Of Ours' which feels perfectly suited to the time of year, whether it's David Giordano's wistful guitar chops or Josh Glazer and Shawn Rhoades' brass section pealing out over the laconic rhythm. 'When It Hits' on the flip is a more sprightly affair which sees drummer AJ Pantaleo setting a snappy pace and Jesse Blum flexing out on the keys, once again maintaining the buttery smooth style the band are so well loved for.

Have A Little Faith (2:48)
Review: This reissue of The Jungle Rat is the second in a series from Names You Can Trust. The first was a doozy, as is this one, and suggests their Panama Gold Series is going to be totally essential. This is the first time this particular holy funk grail has ever been reissued. It's raw, expressive funk with big rhythms, bigger horns and impassioned vocals with plenty of florid melodic motifs. On the flip, things slow down and get more deep and pensive with 'Have A Little Faith.' The belting vocals are repacked with real power and backed with talkative horns.

Review: Mushroom Pillow have tapped up the maverick Jacques Renault here and asked him to tap into a whole new world of influence away from his colourful house fair. It is the rich heritage of Latin underground sounds he leans on most as he threads together his own edits of classics from that world into two steamy new jams. His vibrant rhythms come peppered with mystic flutes and Latin vocals, psyched-out guitars and soulful melodies that make for truly captivating listening. The originals were chosen for their historical significance and cultural impact and have been sympathetically touched up here.

John Wagner Coalition - "Cold Sweat" (edit) (3:12)
Review: Mushi 45 is launching a new series featuring fresh edits of obscure covers of cuts by James Brown and the JB's. The first boasts two thoroughly obscure covers of "Cold Sweat". On the A you'll find a tidy tweak of a rousing, raucous and sexually charged 1968 version by El Klan, a Mexican band renowned for their heavyweight take on funk, soul and rhythm and blues. Over on side B you'll find an interpretation from the John Wagner Coalition that originally featured on their 1976 debut album, which unusually was made up entirely of James Brown covers. Their version is a little more laidback, with tons of spacey synthesizer flourishes, crunchy Clavinet lines and oodles and wild Hammond organ solos.

Review: Mr Bongo take this next one back to 1984 and 1985 with a tasty little split release from The Egyptian Lover and Jamie Jupitor. Both tunes offer unique takes on the famous electro funk sound and cult Los Angeles-based producer, vocalist and DJ The Egyptian Lover goes first with seminal track 'Computer Love (Sweet Dreams). It's a deep space exploration with melodic bass and slake drum work. The Lovers's disciple Jamie Jupitor heads up the reverse with the more high speed and edgy style and angular beats of 'Computer Power.' Both tunes make for irresistible body music.

Review: The Mountain 45 label has been giving us some unique music that cross genres since its inception just a few years ago. Like previous editions, Double A contributes 'Super Badman Riddim' which is both catchy and clever. Featuring James Brown samples thrown in the mix takes this dub related track to the limit of fun. For the B-side, James Nasty's 'Fan Dem Off' with a peak time party song that should take the dancefloor to another level. These attention getters are ideal for being addictively fun and different. It's hard to categorise music like this, which is a sign of its originality.

Review: Jim Sharp presents his sophomore Mountain 45s release, following up the absolute banger of a debut, 'Westchester Eagle'. Coming full circle, we hear Sharp team back up with fellow producer Double A here; on the A we've got the latter's 'Iko (Never Felt This Way)', a fearless cross-section of big beat, Latin funk and sampled West African refrains, while Sharp helms up the B-side this time around, with a full-horseshoe'd rerub of an (ashamedly on our part) unknown funk delight.

Review: Carlton Jumel Smith earned himself the title Mr Soul, being one of NYC's foremost exponents of a faithful sound which keeps the Motown flame alive. Having released a couple of singles on Timmion last year as well as linking up with Dojo Cuts on Colemine, now Smith is stepping out on Mocambo with the riotous party starter 'Keep On Swinging', a heated affair with sassy brass, overdriven guitar licks and the man himself holding it down with a killer vocal turn. 'Hope' on the flip is a funkier number which calls to mind classic Curtis Mayfield, not least thanks to that sprightly percussion section. Great modern soul music which knows where it's coming from.

Review: Sax player Stuart Bogie and drummer Joe Russo founded The Bogie Band, a 10-piece ensemble made up of talented musicians who have played with bands including the likes of The Dap Kings, Arcade Fire, The Budos Band and many more. The collaboration is a fine one that is powered by Bogie's big horns and Russo's powerful drum rhythms. This new one, 'The Struggle' is a battle song that addresses the many often opposing forces at play in society. Great solos by Michael Leonhart and Raymond Jay Mason stand out and on the flip is a special remix of 'Arrival' from the Prophets in the City LP.

Review: This 45rpm from Jr Thomas & Cutlass Cream will have your heart full and your mind dreaming. 'Reflections' is a first single from the pair that finds Thomas moving away from the more Jamaican influenced music he made with The Volcanos for labels Truth & Soul Records and Colemine Records and toward more vulnerable and honest song writing. It could be a reissue of a 60s classic but it isn't and is instead a fine collab with old friend Albert Perez Jr. from Minneapolis. The slow motion rhythms and twinkling melodies are perfect accompaniment for his smoky and downbeat vocals tones.

Some of their earliest pieces are being reissued by Measured Mile, the latest of which appears here in the form of a split 7" by four of the label's most treasured contributors. 'Viva La Tamla Motown' helms up the A-side with wonky, laboured drumming and an excitable rock n' rolly guitar and harmonica. 'Main Chance' brings up the B with a more loungeified flutey strutter.
