Techno
Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Berlin's Cocktail d'Amore and Tokyo's Ene Records have come together once again to present the music of Solidair. The duo of Cocktail alumni Luigi Di Venere and Jules Etienne present three tracks aimed to induce a dance floor hypnosis. Orgonite (Riding the Waves) does just that, a slow build awash in the ebb and flow of acid tinges, just enough to wet your whistle on a Saturday night. The original mix keeps the skeletal support but throws in a life preserver of 8 bit gaming synthesis. Frisky arps call and respond to each other before making way for sinewy pads to lift off. Tiger's Eye sets itself onto cruising speed incorporating elements of late 90's acid techno with the sleek and smooth clubbing aesthetics of modern day Berlin.

Patrick Fitzgerald - "Punch" (3:36)
Jello Biafra & Motorpsycho - "Punch" (3:57)
Review: Two towering labels, Alternative Tentacles and Crispin Glover, break the mould for a momentary merger on this artistic collision of rogue planets: a new split reissued 7" housing that infamous syncretic, Patrick Fitzgerald, Motorpsycho and Jello Biafra, and their twin versions of Fitzgerald's original song 'Punch'. Fitzgerald is best known as a pioneer of folk punk, famously channelling his sardonic wit into a fleeting, light but somehow also epical sound. 'Punch' first surfaced in 2009 as a one-off single released under Crispin Glover's remit; it's now heard once more in both versions, tracking incendiary denunciations of politics on Fitzgerald's part, amid a suicidal, guitar-driven ascension into the air.

Social Dub (3:55)
Review: Flute player Diggory Kenrick trills the pipes once more on this collab with revered dub producers Jah Warrior and Vibronics. 'Social Justice' may sound like a loud name for a new 7", but this is actually a rather muted instrumental cut, with Kenrick's flute standing in for the righteous wail of the politically mobilized folk. The B, too, provides ample space in which to skank and/or hug a bassbin, all while still allowing at least some room for Kenrick's patented flute to peek through the delay and phase.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Without original sleeve, product has light surface marks but otherwise in perfect working condition.***

Don't get duped; Janaway might sound like an oldskool artist, but this is actually one of many recent cases of a contemporary artist operating under a retroistic guise. Jungle and breakbeat are Janaway's modus operandi, with them already having released two blazing heaters on mega-exclusivist white label wax for the niche imprint Mined Records. Now they debut their first solo venture for Sub Code: 'Inna The Dance' catapults us into four rave-twisted breaks smashers, from '24-7 Soundclash' to 'Sensi Lover'.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Torn sleeve, otherwise in excellent working condition***

Ewan Jansen returns to RAND Musik for a tricksy foray through the standard yet effective selection of four tracks: all are disparate, seemingly enchanted worlds. From opener 'Electropolis', we're launched into a bustling, wild, alternate garden of the dance, teeming with all manner of keen creatures and organic-sonic delights. Then comes the (hopefully) anime-referencing 'Lain's Groove' and 'Dead Nights And Headlights', which edge closer to the darker cores of Jansen's shadow self in sound. We finally reach the precipice on 'Wild Shore', which hears us witness the sonic core to end all other cores, in its brimming totality.

Gimme The Grease (2:43)
I Want You (Any Way I Can) (2:20)
Review: Jim Jones (not that Jim Jones, but if your finger's on the pulse, then yes, that Jim Jones) makes a a whopping return with his new 7" 'Gimme The Grease'. A Memphis-via-London hard rock n' roll stonker, this one's a self-proclaimed ode to "getting over/getting it easy/getting it". Whatever that means, we're not sure, but the song is a figurative statement to match, as Jones sings relentlessly of prevailing against the odds despite life's grind, while staying staunchly backed up by rollincking drums, shimmying shakers and honking horn sections. Forwarding the upcoming album Ain' No Peril, it's a fantastic prototype for an upcoming album with an inevitable Mississippean rock stench, sure to sate anyone with even so much of a hint of keenness for the sound.

Robert James - "Dmode" (Ben Jones & Benjamin Joseph remix) (8:51)
Review: Label boss Ben Jones steps up to curate the third outing on Before. It finds him working with Benjamin Joseph on opener 'Soothe', a stripped-back and warm house roller with crisp hits. Robert James then remixes with a more broken vibe and old-school baselines. On the flip, James then steps up with 'Dmode' with its a punchy cut with drilling bass and tripped-out effects. Ben Jones & Benjamin Joseph then return the remix favour with their own take on 'Dmode'. It's darker and more heads down, with silky synths and plenty of late-night intrigue keeping you locked.

Review: Durand Jones & The Indications' third LP, Too Many Tears keeps on offering up superb singles and after the latest back in November, we now get this new one 'Ride or Die.' This band is a regular on the Colemine label and they do it all from slow motion seductiveness to blue eyed soul and sophisticated lounge pop. This time we get lovely harmonies and breezy soul on 'Ride Or Die' with its lead falsetto set to melt anyone's heart. The flip, things take a tender turn with more vulnerable vocals and gently rhythms that come alive with serene strings, gentle tambourines and neat basslines.

Review: Colemine Records very much transports us back to another time with this latest lovely offering. It is a deep dive into the work of sophisticated lounge-pop as might be played during dinner at a trendy society ball back in the 60s. It comes from Durand Jones and The Indications and one track off they third album Too Many Tears. It's is one of heartbreak and is lit up by the gorgeous falsetto of Aaron Frazrs on the A-side, who tells s tale of betrayal. On the flip is a sweet soul sound soaked up by new school fans with an alternative indie an experimental sound from Y La Bomba led by singer-songwriter and guitarist Luz Elena Mendoza.

Review: The A-side of this new 45 from Colemine can be described as sophisticated lounge-pop for dinnertime at a hip debutante ball in 1962. Featuring a track off of Durand Jones & The Indications' third LP, 'Too Many Tears' depicts a story of heartbreak, with Aaron Frazer's silky falsetto mournfully painting a scene of betrayal. The B-side has gone on to become a theme tune for a whole new generation of sweet soul lovers: featuring Y La Bomba, a Latin indie alternative/experimental band led by singer-songwriter and guitarist Luz Elena Mendoza, the track is an homage to lowriders across the globe. A heater of a 45. Let's cruise....

Review: Featuring two tracks that from Durand Jones & The Indications' third LP, this new 45 is a honeyed slice of retro-soul with pop leanings, as the band continues to mine the '60s and '70s for inspiration. Front to back, the record retains a healthy balance between the invention of new sounds and the sticking to strengths. The A-side 'Ride Or Die' casts the spotlight squarely on drummer Aaron Frazer, who also just so happens to have one of Earth's silkiest falsettos, while Jones' vocals lead the way through the sultry 'More Than Ever’.

Parallel Universe
Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Hot Creations boss Jamie Jones manages to find time for another release, in between his Ibiza residency and travelling the globe as one of modern house music's most popular DJs. His latest offering brings everything you'd expect from the Welshman and nothing less. These four Summery and pop-inflected tech house cuts are hot material on their own and make a cohesive EP. Starting off with the anthemic "Sound Of Music" covering jungle legend Nookie's track of the same name and with pop sensation Katy B on vocals. The rolling peak time groove "Kooky Chords" is absolutely the sound of not only 'The Island' but Jones' label and will bang the party just as much as recent offerings by wAFF or Phil Kieran. On the flip, there's a bouncy and sleazy early evening jam in the form of "Positive Pressure" featuring American Kevin Knapp and the druggy/minimal afterhours DJ tool "Parallel Universe".

Review: ***B-STOCK:Sleeve damaged & record has light surface marks/scratches, otherwise in excellent working condition***

Matthew Jonson studied classical piano as a kid and, as well as learning jazz drumming, played drums in a marching band. We only mention this because the influence of all three is still very much in evidence in the infectious house music that the Berlin-based producer makes. The signature melody of 'Spaceport 23' is a jazzy organ riff, which lands it a carefree, frisky air, but of course his grasp of tight, economic beats and beautifully balanced, pleasing-to-the-ear composition also play their parts. 'Spaceport 23-Z' doesn't veer far from the original, but adds a sheen of Detroit-esque synth magic, while those who favour the tech in their tech house will probably want to head for the more synthetic, electrified vibes of 'Spaceport 23-X'.

Here he worked with producer Freddie McGregor on a contemporary lovers rock jam that was originally released back in 1993. 'Badda Than Them' has great patois vocals over fresh production that has clean digital synths over clipped beats and plenty of swaggering and original dub style bass weight. On the flip you get two different versions that tweak and tease out different elements from the original.

Say She Sh - "Wrap Myself Up In Your Love" (3:43)
Jim Spencer - "Wrap Myself Up In Your Love" (4:04)
Review: Say She She is the psychedelic soul group from Brooklyn that's exploded onto the scene since their debut in 2019. Receiving critical acclaim for their two albums to date, and the pleasure of touring Europe and North America, the Nile Rodgers-inspired female trio even got a video message of approval from the legend himself. Authentic and organic are two words that fit the classically trained troupe to a tea and, in the great soul tradition, covers are a necessity. Jim Spencer's 1979 attempt at foraying into disco 'Wrap Myself Up in Your Love' wasn't received amazingly at the time, but thanks to the adoration of archive label The Numero Group, the song has seen a resurgence in covers and fans. The original vocal is zany and expressive against some jangly funk guitars, whilst Say She She's rendition hones in on the sultry aspect of the track. Guitars are muted down to transform the song into a lovemaking slow jam, wind passages are introduced and the vocal is subtly powerful and sexy. This 7" contains both Spencer's original track and the interpretation by the trio, pressed on white vinyl.

Organic and authentic are two words that fit the classically trained troupe to a tea and, in the great soul tradition, covers are a necessity. Jim Spencer's 1979 track 'Wrap Myself Up in Your Love' didn't get much attention at the time - his attempt at doing disco wasn't well received - but thanks to the adoration of archive label The Numero Group, the song has seen a resurgence in covers and fans. Review: Luv Shack is a little old place where good-time disco sounds never stop flowing. The Disco Biscuits series from the label is now up to the third volume and it's as crucial as the first two. Lee Stevens gets it going with 'Theme For Disco Biscuits' which is a contemporary take on a classic Italo stomper. Endrik Schroder's 'Infinity' is a glossy synth-heavy disco made with 80s hi-energy in mind. 'One Of A Kind' on the flip then slows down with a warm house chug and Golden Boogie Connection keeps it horizontal with 'Dull Grey', topped off with some nice acid.

This second volume of Detroit leaning e-funk is a faultless four tracker. Review: .Three years on from the release of his hugely successful third album, Big Conspiracy, J Hus continues to make all the right moves. Now a genuine superstar of British music, the London MC has aimed even higher on Beautiful & Brutal Yard, enlisting the vocal talents of none other than Drake on 'Who Told You' (a Latin-tinged chunk of r&b slinkiness), as well as an impressive array of fellow MCs and beat-makers across an album that consciously pulls grime in a variety of accessible, radio-friendly directions. Lyrically, there are naturally some hard-hitting moments, but for every reflection on inner-city life and wider social issues there's a dose of loved-up sweetness and weary reflections on relationships. As a result, it's an impressively balanced and impeccably produced collection.

Review: Four years after hitting the headlines with her debut album as the Japanese House, Good At Falling, Amber Bain returns with a much-anticipated sequel. Musically, it's a confident affair, with Bain further developing her now trademark sound, which sits somewhere between folksy breeziness, melancholic synth-pop, positive-sounding indie-pop, and deep, alluring dance-pop of the sort that would impress those who love deep house and tech-house. Bain's vocals, delivering lyrics far more thoughtful and at times heart-breaking than those showcased early in the year, are particularly impactful. The result is a highly entertaining and listenable album that's sure to push its creator a little further towards superstar status.

As the title suggests, this version features new remixes of album tracks (all of which feature sounds originally created by Henry) by a disparate group of musical talents. That makes for an interesting mix of interpretations, with armin Van Buuren's sizable trance translation of 'Epica' rubbing shoulders with a trippy, off-kilter electro take on 'Sex In The Machine' by Nina Kraviz, a moody Martin Gore interpretation of 'Brutalism', Irene Dresel's raw techno revision of 'Zeitgeist Botanica', and ambient pioneer Brian Eno putting his spin on 'Epica'.

This must-have CD presents that performance in its entirety, including the infamous ending - where Strummer's former Clash bandmate Mick Jones emerged from the audience to join him on stage for performances of 'Bank Robber', 'White Riot' and 'London's Burning' (it was the first time the two had performed together since 1983). Recorded for a radio broadcast, the gig was undoubtedly special, with Strummer and his bandmates powering through classics including 'Police & Thieves', '(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais' and 'I Fought The Law'.

Review: For their latest deep dive into the history of Jamaican music, Dr Bird has decided to deliver two key albums from the formative years of dancehall, both of which were produced by King Jammy and - remarkably - have never made it to CD before. Disc one boasts Sugar Minott's 1979 set Bitter Sweet, a super-sweet and hugely enjoyable collection that added traditional roots reggae style vocals and instrumentation to rhythms and grooves that provided the bedrock of the dancehall sound (for proof, check 'Give The People' and 'Not For Sale'). Over on CD2, it's all about Johnny Osbourne's 'Reggae On Broadway', a more weighty and low-slung affair that nevertheless proved influential to a whole generation of dancehall enthusiasts. 'Lend Me Your Chopper', 'Reggae On Broadway' and 'Folly Ranking' are particularly potent.
