Review: Staten Island's The Jazztronauts return to Nu Tone with a smooth cruising single which capitalises on the slick fusion style they do so well. There's a reflective, season-shifting mood to 'This Thing Of Ours' which feels perfectly suited to the time of year, whether it's David Giordano's wistful guitar chops or Josh Glazer and Shawn Rhoades' brass section pealing out over the laconic rhythm. 'When It Hits' on the flip is a more sprightly affair which sees drummer AJ Pantaleo setting a snappy pace and Jesse Blum flexing out on the keys, once again maintaining the buttery smooth style the band are so well loved for.

Review: Deep house on a 7" is a rather rather thing but this 45rpm certainly is worth your while. It is the first we have heard from Jazztronik, all producer and keysman Ryota Nozaki, since his Universal Language album last year. He has been at this now for 24 years and brings all that know how to these two jams. 'Evoke' is a lively broken beat workout with squelchy bass and improvised jazz keys that are restless and energizing with rich leads. 'Beat Hopper' (The 3rd Session) appears on the flip with more innovative keys and party-pumping broken beats. A tasteful duo for sure.

Review: Cannonball Records' Tesla Groove is now embarking on a brand new collaboration with Italy's Irma Records. First up is this, a first ever pressing of 'Straight to You' and 'I'm Gonna Love You' on the same 7". They are by Acid Jazz collective Jestofunk, which was made up of three Italian DJs namely Claudio Moz-Art Rispoli, Francesco Farias and Blade and Alessandro Staderini. They dropped a fine album in 1994, Love in a Black Dimension, from which these tunes are taken. The A-side is a flute led jazz-fusion cut with summery warmth and lavish arrangements, and the flip is a disco tinged scorcher with mid-tempo drums, sustained strong synths and a great soul vocals.

Review: Jason Joshua & The Beholders first landed on our radar with the excellent Alegria Y Tristeza album for Mango Hill in 2020, which built on a run of choice singles to present a fully realised vision of Latin soul. 'Poor Boy' is one of the standout tracks from that album, and after the original pressing of the single flew out in 2021, the label have done the right thing and given it a repress so it can reach more folk who love nothing better than a perfect slice of soul on a 45. 'Poor Boy' is a slow and sweet lament about hard times, but in many ways it's its B-side 'I Don't Care' which steals the show in a smouldering display of come hither soul played out by a band with a classic sound.

Review: White Girl Wasted is a production partnership made up of Lawrence Lord and Sonny Sathi, and they're striking out big on their debut bout as White Girl Wasted. The UK duo hit their stride four years ago when they started putting the beats and raps together for 'Barz Simpson', but even they couldn't have predicted such a positive and generous delivery from the late, great MF Doom on the track after they took a punt on sending it to him. As if that wasn't enough, they then tapped up Jay Electronica for an additional spot, rounding out an essential cut that sounds just as dope in instrumental form on the B-side.
