California Love (reissue)
California Love (reissue) (clear vinyl 7" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: IMP 006CLEAR. Rel: 05 Apr 24

Hip Hop/R&B
2Pac - "California Love" (feat Dr Dre) (4:04)
Ice Cube - "Jackin For Beats" (3:03)
Review: West Coast Classics US has taken the hip-hop community by storm with their ability to license such seminal west coast tracks. With an extra focus on gangster rap, the label offers a classic on each side of a 7". Their sixth release has a couple of killers on it! 2pac and Dr.Dre's 'California Love' really needs no introduction. A legendary track that ate up the airwaves around the world and on MTV when it was released in 1996. Not to be outdone, Ice Cube covers the B-side with one of his most important solo tracks that established him after leaving NWA., 'Jackin For Beats'. Getting original copies of these on wax would cost a day's wage for most people. Like the label suggests, these are West Coast Classics and are blueprints for gangster rap.

You Know How We Do It (3:51)
2 N The Morning (0:11)
Review: Throwdown Records throw down a fresh reissue of Ice Cube's stone cold classic 'You Know How We Do It', first released as a single from his fourth studio album Lethal Injection (1996). Emblematic of Cube's signature West Coast G-funk, this one's replete with the glissando'd whistles and smokey funk motifs we all know and love from the frozen rap hexahedron, who confidently assures us of us already knowing how he does it. There's no messing with Cube; the track appears alongside the original B flip '2 N The Morning', which ups the bombast to boomier, increasingly sexual nighttime ends.

Hip Hop/R&B
It Was A Good Day (4:25)
You Can Do It (feat Mack 10 & Ms Toi) (4:24)
Review: The first missive from the reissue-focused Throwdown imprint takes a deep dive into the bulging back catalogue of West Coast hip-hop legend Ice Cube. Side A offers us another chance to own 1992 hit "It Was A Good Day" a languid, sun-kissed Golden Era jam crafted from elements of a familiar slab of laidback jazz-funk. Over on side B you'll find 1999's "You Can Do It", another once high-profile single featuring additional verses and vocal contributions from Mack 10 and Ms Toi. For those who've forgotten it, the track is a punchier and heavy club cut that utilizes all three rappers' distinctive flows to ratchet up the intensity throughout.

Gotta Get Mine (4:05)
Take A Look (4:36)
Review: The Funky Dividends label is all about preserving and celebrating a range of classic tunes from cornerstone genres like hip hop, funk and r&b. Its latest careful vinyl outing is this limited 7" with two hip hop cut from Infinite. These came first time around in the mid-nineties when Infinite was knocking it out of the park with his storytelling rhymes. He was an underground star who grew up in a low income area in Toronto and used that to power his potent bars. He released only a couple of tunes but these two are his most notable.

Cruel Mistake (Moodorama Weird Mistake remix) (3:59)
Cruel Mistake (Moodorama Deep Rise remix) (4:58)
Make Me Crazy (Potatohead People remix - instrumental) (2:57)
Review: A Moodymann remix is a mad rare thing. The singular Detroit producer very rarely steps out to tackle other people's music but when he does the world takes note. This time he sets to work on 2022's 'Hold On To It' by Colonel Red and Inkswel. In his hands, it becomes a distinctively low sling bit of sleazy deep house with punctured drums, off-grid pianos and his own vocal mutterings. Potatohead People offer a more lush and soulful downbeat vibe, while a Moodorama Weird Mistake is perfect for late-night back rooms and the Moodorama Deep Rise mix is all bubbly bass and melodies that provide real musical comfort.

Review: Pete Cunningham's hybrid electronic/acoustic jazz collective Ishmael Ensemble has been right at the forefront of innovation when it comes to those sounds. For his latest project he links up with lyricist and MC Rider Shafique. They first met some six years ago when Cunningham was struck by "his powerful way with words." As such they got in the studio, Cunningham embraced a more bass heavy sound to his style and drew on his love of the likes of dub kings King Tubby and Adrian Sherwood. Coupled with Rider's voice and you have a superb new record.

Review: German Ivan Ave is a core member of the flourishing contemporary beat scene and has put out a coupe of crucial record on labels like Berlin's Jakarta. Now he branches out to Norway's Mutual Intentions with a crisp new EP, Mid Season, on 10". It showcases the dexterity of his voice which goes from offering up classic bloom bap era par's to more stylised Prince-esque deliveries on 'Mid' and downbeat, almost mumble rap styles on 'Names.' Four instrumental versions of the originals are included on the flip and will be sweet in the club, but you can't beat the vocals.

What It Feels Like (Carrtoons remix)
What It Feels Like
Review: Potatohead People's classic tune 'What It Feels Like' featuring T3 (Slum Village), Kapok and Illa J, first released in 2020 alongside an unmatched live video, gets not only a reissue on vinyl here but a remix treatment from in-demand bass player Carrtoons. Switching up the order of the verses, dubbing out the horns and adding in his signature basswork, Carrtoons brings a fresh flavour to the track's already steaming, boom-bap verve. Fans of Anderson Paak, Smoove or anyone operating in the crossover of neo-soul, jazz and rap will be much pleased by this one.

Review: Milwaukee veteran Ice Mone dropped his now legendary album In Tha Freeza Chamba in 1996. It immediately put his hometown on the map as well as announcing his own arrival in spectacular fashion. This welcome reissue includes all the tracks from the original debut as well as three bonus joints featuring Bizzy Bone & B-Legit. It's an album that takes in everything from the hardcore rap opener with plenty of heavily treated vocals and dark beats to the low slung and sleazy Cali-style funk of 'Da Freeza' and 'Bring Dat Shit.'

Review: Ice Spice has been Anna send as the leats Apple Music Up Next artists and has also dropped this, a deluxe version of her debut EP Like? via 10K Projects/Capitol Records. It was a breakout package for the artist featuring tunes such as 'Munch (Feelin' U),' 'Bikini Bottom,' 'In Ha Mood' and maybe most famously of all, 'Princess Diana,' , which became a smash hit for her idol turned collaborator Nicki Minaj when its as remixed and climbed high in the Billboard Hot 100 eventually stopping at number four. This is another big EP for Ice Soccer following others like 'Boys a liar Pt. 2' with PinkPantheress and 'Barbie World', which sampled Aqua.

Review: Those who know are saying that Ice Spice is set to have a big year in 2023. The rapper is doing her own bit to make that come true with this, a first official release via 10K Projects/Capitol Records, which includes a single made with assistance from 'Gangsta Boo.' The Bronx rapper has generated lots of buzz up to now and this six tracker only builds on that with great production from RIOTUSA. Review: Ice-T's latest compilation album, coming to vinyl LP, homes in on an interesting cornerstone of the rapper's towering career; his "story rhymes", i.e. the ones that tell stories or build an especially compelling narrative. Beginning with some of T's earliest singles such as '6 N The Mornin'' to latter-day highlights like 'Midnight', all of these tracks serve to fluff the mythos of Ice-T, playing on the well-cited trope of rappers playing up to exaggerated hyperbole; in the words of Ice-T, "the reason it's titled The Legend of Ice-T is because a lot of things people believe about me are legend. Legend is part false... A lot of this stuff that people believe about me are lyrics that aren't necessarily true, but we'll let the legend continue.

Review: Inspectah Deck is one of the many legendary members of East Coast hip-hop collective Wu-Tang Clan. The Movement was his second album 20 years ago now in 2003 with production taken care of by Phantom of the Beats, Ayatollah, Arabian Knight and Falling Down. The bars are all his own but there are features from Killa Sin, Kool G Rap, Mojehan and Streetlife all of whom helped him move away from the darker soul sounds of his solo debut to a more upbeat style that is hella expressive. "The Movement is like me behind the scenes, behind everything. I'm doing everything." Fair play, 'cause it bangs.

Dedicated to Deck's late father Frank Hunter and sporting features from fellow Wu-Tang monks U-God and Masta Killa, as well as lesser-known affiliates such as Street Life, Killa Sin, and LA The Darkman; Uncontrolled Substance offers over an hour of classic east coast hip-hop at its incomparable peak.
