Review:

The Hope Six Demolition Project was first put out in 2016 and gave rise to singles such as 'The Wheel', and 'The Community Of Hope'. This deluxe reissue comes on 180gsm black vinyl and has plenty of alt, art and folk-rock goodness within from perennial favourite Polly Jean "PJ" Harvey. This reissue of her sixth album features brand new artwork with cover art that is in fact based on a drawing PJ Harvey has done herself. It has been freshly mastered for the occasion by Jason Mitchell at Loud Mastering and was overseen by frequent and ling time PJ-producer, John Parish.

Review: It has been said before that Polly Jean Harvey's 1998 album, Is This Desire, marked a watershed moment in her career. A veritable coming of age record that failed to match the commercial heights of To Bring You My Love, but was actually a far more complete and personal thing. Less angry than preceding efforts, it painted a more balanced and accurate portrait of an artist whose formative years were pockmarked with media analysis and criticism of her visible powerful attributes - sexuality and fury.

Coupled with the fact that Harvey has never been one to pander to scenes in the hope of top ten chart success, and you can only imagine how happy she was with the finished product. And all this is before we start banging on about the musicality, from title track's subtle, hushed baritone blues to the garage rock-out of 'A Perfect Day Elise'.

Review: After marking her "in session" debut on John Peel's Radio 1 show as a virtual unknown in 1991, PJ Harvey became a semi-regular fixture at the BBC's Maida Vale studios during the final years of the legendary DJ's life. The Peel Sessions 1991-2004 doesn't exactly reflect this - it is, after all, a selection of recordings rather than Harvey's entire Peel Session archive- but it does give a snapshot of the West Country indie-rocker at her distinctive best. The plentiful highlights include an alternately low-slung and bluesy take on 'Victory', an increasingly breathless 1993 cover of Willie Dixon's 'Wang Dang Doodle', a dense and fuzzy version of 'This Wicked Tongue' from 2000, and Harvey's emotive, folksy rendition of 'You Come Through' from the 2004 John Peel tribute concert.

Review: You can never really understate the impact Polly Jean Harvey had when she landed on the UK music scene, and the radars of tastemakers like John Peel, in the early-1990s. Guitar tracks at the time were usually split into unashamedly lager-soaked upfront Britpop, or nihilistic and self-sabotaging grunge and metal from the US. PJ Harvey was neither, and on 'To Bring You My Love' she perfected a particularly UK take on heavy, darkroom rock.

Pressing play means stepping into a world where the blues can either be a sparse, pitch black tome ('To Bring You My Love') or stomping and sweat-soaked juggernaut ('Meet Ze Monsta'), and that's just referencing the first two songs. Compare either to the trip-hop infused downtempo melancholia of 'The Dancer', and it's pretty clear why this was one of the albums of its decade.

Review: Fans of Polly Jean Harvey have been spoiled of late, with the West Country singer-songwriter not only offering up remastered and expanded editions of many of her solo albums, but also partner albums of previously unheard demo recordings. The latest set to get this treatment is 2000's Mercury Music Prize-winning Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea, an album that many critics believe is the lauded artist's greatest single work. This 'demo' version is as stripped back and impactful as you'd expect, with Harvey, accompanied by little more than an acoustic or electric guitar, delivering pleasingly sparse, stripped-back versions of now-familiar songs. Presented in 'in progress' form like this, the quality of Harvey's songs - and her lyrics in particular - really shines through.

The latest to get this treatment is her critically acclaimed set Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea. Famously, most of the songs focus on love and relationships and were written while Harvey was living in New York City at the tail end of the '90s. As with her other collections of demos, most of the early versions showcased here feature little more than Harvey on guitar and lone or multi-tracked vocals. This raw and stripped-back approach gives new life to some songs, with highlights including the heart-aching 'The Mess We're In' and fuzz-soaked 'This Is Love'.

Review: While it had only been a few months since the release of her 4 Track Demos project, when To Bring You My Love first arrived in 1994 it felt like it had been a long time coming. Taking elements that made her early studio efforts stand out - the twisted mania of Dry and the Patti Smith-esque agony of Rid of Me - here Polly Jean Harvey fully embraced a kind of pained grunge-blues.

The resulting brew is particularly potent. Whether you're listening to the hushed, mysterious groove of 'Working For The Man', 'Long Snake Moan''s dark metal edges, or the sparse, troubled and deeply pained anthem 'Teclo', everything here is clearly the work of a genius. A fact that rings particularly true given these stunning versions represent her work in its original demo form.

Review: Polly Jean Harvey broke into the common conscious with her unique and individual approach to alternative rock, and she's managed to maintain that aural autonomy throughout a storied career that has simultaneously found favour in the musical mainstream and refused to stray far from the leftfield. A difficult balance to strike, this, her eighth solo studio album, is indicative of that point. There's nothing here not to enjoy, but there's very little here you could predict.

Not least given where it sits in her back catalogue. Production began as the seminal but decidedly hushed White Chalk was released, and this record couldn't be more different from the preceding LP. Doing away with introspect, for the most part anyway, and refocusing attention away from pianos, it's a rousing indie collection that further cements the artist as one of Britain's national treasures.

Review: Polly Jean Harvey continues to open up her archives of home recordings, with 2011's Mercury Prize winning Let England Shake - arguably her most lauded album to date - becoming the latest album to be reissued in work-in-progress demo form. The original album was a little more musically complex and aesthetically picturesque than her earlier work, with generally softer guitars. In contrast, these early demo versions are sparse and lo-fi, sometimes with fuzzier electric guitar motifs and even more impassioned vocals. Perhaps more surprisingly, many also feature samples of other songs - rock and roll, rockabilly and easy listening oddities - at the beginning, with Harvey adding her contributions while loops from the selected tracks running in the background. It shouldn't work, but does, and offers a unique insight into her creative process,

Review: We've been treated to reissues of everything else from PJ Harvey's spectacular catalogue, so it's only right we get a chance to savour the deeper cuts that shape out the persona of the high priestess of alternative rock. Gathering together an exhaustive 59 B sides, demos and previously unreleased tracks, this six-LP box set takes us into the heart of Polly Jean's writing process, showing the raw power in the songwriting when it's just her voice and an overdriven guitar, and showing us the broader possibilities of songs which didn't make the cut for the studio albums. This is a true treasure of music getting the authoritative release she deserves.

Review: PJ Harvey's ongoing vinyl reissue series has finally arrived at 2007's White Chalk, an album that at the time was thought of as something of a curveball from the West Country singer-songwriter. Unlike its predecessors, which were celebrated for their raw, fuzzy, stripped-back alt-rock sound, White Chalk emerged after Harvey decided to write an album of "piano songs" - despite having no experience playing the instrument herself. With Flood and John Parish handling production duties, the set's tracks were generally lighter and breezier sonically, with a little more polish and much more restricted use of electric guitar. Harvey's lyrics are as distinctive as ever, though, offering a clear contrast to the pastoral and oddly traditional feel of the music.

Review: Polly Jean Harvey's reissue series continues via a new edition of 2004 set Uh Huh Her, one of the alternative rock icon's most fuzzy and lo-fi sets. The album's distinctive sound, which eschewed studio trickery in favour of a stripped-back range of instruments and home recording techniques, was a deliberate choice, but one that divided critics at the time. All these years on, the album still sounds raw and fresh, with Harvey's distinctive lyrics and vocal delivery rising above her own lo-fi musical backing (she played almost all the instruments herself) and long-time collaborator Rob Ellis' unfussy drums. Highlights include 'Shame', the riotous 'Who The Fuck', the sparse and surprisingly electronic 'The Slow Drug' and the growling, post-punk-goes-alt-rock flavour of 'It's You'.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record is warped, otherwise in excellent condition***

PJ Harvey's ongoing vinyl reissue series has finally arrived at 2007's White Chalk, an album that at the time was thought of as something of a curveball from the West Country singer-songwriter.

Review: PJ Harvey and John Parish linked up for a second collaborative album on UMC in 2009 after their first effort Dance Hall at Louse Point in 1996. The avant garde mix of alternative and indie rock was recorded between Bristol and Dorset and co-produced by both artists. Harvey of course took care of the lyrics and they mesh perfectly with the musicianship of Parish. Captivating and expressive, packed with charisma and metal understanding, this is the sound of two artists at their peak. Newly remastered and presented on heavyweight vinyl, this is the latest in a run of reissues of Harvey's material.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

First released in 1998, the last album from the sadly missed Mark Hollis was originally set to be a Talk Talk album, scheduled to follow up 1991's "Laughing Stock". Described by engineer Phil Brown as "open, restful and at times fantastically beautiful", Hollis' only solo effort is quite the opposite of the dark and claustrophobic direction of Talk Talk's final album. Entirely self-produced, the record takes Talk Talk's pared back, emotive intimacy further into yet more minimal, private territory, of sometimes almost unbearable intensity. A complex, compelling last dispatch from an indisputable genius.
