Review: First released in 1998, the last album from the sadly missed Mark Hollis was originally set to be a Talk Talk album, scheduled to follow up 1991's "Laughing Stock". Described by engineer Phil Brown as "open, restful and at times fantastically beautiful", Hollis' only solo effort is quite the opposite of the dark and claustrophobic direction of Talk Talk's final album. Entirely self-produced, the record takes Talk Talk's pared back, emotive intimacy further into yet more minimal, private territory, of sometimes almost unbearable intensity. A complex, compelling last dispatch from an indisputable genius.

The last, The Hope Six Demolition Project, was a UK number one on the album charts and this one was again recorded with long-time creative collaborators John Parish and Flood. It is a vast sonic universe that is located "in a space between life's opposites, and between recent history and the ancient past." Review: You can never really understate the impact Polly Jean Harvey had when she landed on the UK music scene, and the radars of tastemakers like John Peel, in the early-1990s. Guitar tracks at the time were usually split into unashamedly lager-soaked upfront Britpop, or nihilistic and self-sabotaging grunge and metal from the US. PJ Harvey was neither, and on 'To Bring You My Love' she perfected a particularly UK take on heavy, darkroom rock.
Pressing play means stepping into a world where the blues can either be a sparse, pitch black tome ('To Bring You My Love') or stomping and sweat-soaked juggernaut ('Meet Ze Monsta'), and that's just referencing the first two songs. Compare either to the trip-hop infused downtempo melancholia of 'The Dancer', and it's pretty clear why this was one of the albums of its decade.

Review: It has been said before that Polly Jean Harvey's 1998 album, Is This Desire, marked a watershed moment in her career. A veritable coming of age record that failed to match the commercial heights of To Bring You My Love, but was actually a far more complete and personal thing. Less angry than preceding efforts, it painted a more balanced and accurate portrait of an artist whose formative years were pockmarked with media analysis and criticism of her visible powerful attributes - sexuality and fury.
Coupled with the fact that Harvey has never been one to pander to scenes in the hope of top ten chart success, and you can only imagine how happy she was with the finished product. And all this is before we start banging on about the musicality, from title track's subtle, hushed baritone blues to the garage rock-out of 'A Perfect Day Elise'.

A politically-charged LP full of sonic interrogations of political disaster and turmoil, Holmes here joins the cast of artists using their art to provide solace to music fans suffering at the hands of the Uncertainocene. With updated versions of the previously released singles 'Hope Is The Last Thing To Die' and 'It's Over If We Run Out Of Love', as well as a recording of an unreleased song by Holmes' late friend Andrew Weatherall, we're reminded of conflict, migration and othering, as all manner of voices combine to form a diverse but unified whole against a backdrop of leftfield post-punk - be they the spoken word accounts from Afghan and Ukrainian refugees now welcomed as residents in Belfast, or the French and Irish observers of the UK's turmoil of recent years.

Review: Over the last 12 months, Polly Jean Harvey has delivered remastered versions of many of her most acclaimed albums, while also releasing collections of demo recordings for each set. The latest to get this treatment is her critically acclaimed set Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea. Famously, most of the songs focus on love and relationships and were written while Harvey was living in New York City at the tail end of the '90s. As with her other collections of demos, most of the early versions showcased here feature little more than Harvey on guitar and lone or multi-tracked vocals. This raw and stripped-back approach gives new life to some songs, with highlights including the heart-aching 'The Mess We're In' and fuzz-soaked 'This Is Love'.

The Oxford five-piece might be considered an early example of the provincial intellectual indie-band idyll; their songs were written by lead songwriter Amelia Fletcher, backed up by the likes of guitarist Peter Momtchilloff and keyboardist Cathy Rogers. Review: Le Jardin De Heavenly is one of the four Heavenly albums scheduled for reissue this year by Skep Wax Records. The band have marked that news by reuniting for two special sold-out dates at Bush Hall in London as appetite for their music feels as strong as it did first time round back in the 1990s as the new generation pick up on it via mediums like Tiktok and streaming platforms. This record is packed with melody-laden pop tunes, complex harmonies and plenty of intense drums, guitar flourishes and sharp and loud riffs. Elements of early shoegazae can also be heard next to some dreamier pieces. A real classic.

Review: It's probably nothing more than a coincidence that the title of Hurts' latest longform shares a name with one of the late-George Michael's most celebrated records. Then again the opening number does boast staccato rhythms stopping dead to allow Theo Hutchcraft's vocals to take centre stage before beats drop back in. Well, since the start of this year, eccentric frontman Howlin' Pelle Almqvist has been spotted numerous times on the Hollywood Boulevard holding up "protest" signs with slogans such as "The Hives Must Album Now!" and "Honk If You Want a New The Hives Album". This guerilla marketing has all been for a truly righteous cause as the group have finally put listener anxiety at ease with confirmation of The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons; their sixth album and first since 2012's Lex Hives, due out in August of this year. The unhinged, bangeriffic lead cut 'Bogus Operandi' also marks their first piece of new material since those previously mentioned singles from four years ago. Dancing shoes? Check? Uniformed suit? Check. First Hives record in a decade? Inbound.

Review: Mayer Hawthorne came up at the height of Detroit's hip-hop movement, playing DJ sets and making beats from his hometown of nearby Ann Arbor. He dropped his debut release via Stones Throw in 2008 and since then has put out four more albums and picked up plenty of critical support as well as radio plays across the world. For All Time is his fifth album and one that crosses even more musical boundaries than before with lyrics that explore "the complexities of love and the raw emotions that accompany it." It is dark, brooding, erotic and stylish with hints of 1920's jazz club to it. A great return. .

Review: .The critical jury has certainly been out on Ben Howard's latest slice of soft electronic pop-dance-indie business, some slapping an Album of the Week label on it, others referring to it as "a little dull". Beauty is, of course, in the eye of the beholder, or in this case the ear, and from where we're sitting Is It? certainly is a thing of exceptional beauty. Only boring people get bored, blah blah blah.
Indeed, if there was a major criticism here it would be the most 21st Century, mind-ruined-by-tidal-waves-of-wireless-information criticism imaginable. Howard clearly expects us to listen and listen good, with such delicate tracks easily at risk of slipping into the background. Turn it up, then, and feel the full, subtle power of what's here - 1980s hued sophisticated lushness, lo-fi downtempo curveballs, postmodern art pop. Ace.
