Review: Jascha Heifetz's profound connection with the tumultuous ocean mirrors the intensity and subtleties of his renowned violin sound. He shows that on this nice heavyweight 180-gram album which, meticulously crafted, revisits Heifetz's career milestones with crisp attacks, imaginative phrasings, and mellifluous sustains. The repertoire juxtaposes iconic pieces from different eras and showcases Heifetz's discerning taste in all its glory. From Vitali's Baroque masterpiece to Faure's Romantic opus and Castelnuovo-Tedesco's modern tone poem, each piece complements the other seamlessly. Cut by Bernie Grundman and preserved without digital intervention, this LP encapsulates Heifetz's timeless artistry in a lovely package by Impex Records.

Review: Marc Leclair may have become best known for his Akufen work in the 00s, but his Horror Inc work is surely some of his finest. Taking the slinky micro house he pioneered and turning it to more cinematic purposes, his last album under the name was 2013's incredible Briefly Eternal on Perlon. Now he revives the project with this expansive suite for Ohm Hourani's Anoma label, which is appropriately tipped towards jazzy subtleties within machine music. With each release, Horror Inc becomes a deeper, subtler concern, and so it goes on this record where the springy, swung patterns are offset by half-hidden melodic murmurs and a generous dose of mystery as Leclair takes his conceptual project further into the realms of playfully spooky micro jazz.

Review: It would be easy to think of Whitney as the first album from one of R&B's all-time greatest icons, but in fact Whitney Houston released a self-titled album just two years earlier in 1985. Either way, it was with this light beam of pop perfection that Houston truly cemented her reputation as a global superstar, and it's not hard to understand why. The hits just spill out of this record, from 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) and 'Love Will Save The Day' to 'So Emotional' and 'For The Love Of You'. The songwriting is stellar, but of course it's Houston's impassioned, full-bodied vocal which makes these the perennial hits they are - it's an all-time classic, need we say more?

Don't You Want Me (3:56)
Review: Does synth-pop get any more essential than this? When The Human League delivered their third album Dare in 1981, they instantly evolved from minimal wave outsiders to chart-topping pop treasures, and with the hits on here is it any surprise? From the epic, aspirational opener 'The Things That Dreams Are Made Of' through dark dancefloor monster 'The Sound Of The Crowd' through to their biggest hit, 'Don't You Want Me' casually tucked in at the back of the running order, it's a wall-to-wall classic which should be nestled into every record collection? If you don't own it already, now's your chance - and on translucent blue vinyl no less.
