Review: In celebration of their tenth birthday, Selador marks the occasion in style with a four-track collaborative EP, featuring tracks from 3D, Robert Owens, Olivier Giacomotto, Quivver, Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Argia, and Jepe. The opening track, 'Known Love', is a deep, pulasting house tune that feels like an instant classic, perhaps thanks to the soulful, pop-tinged vocals - think LCD soundsystem meets Four Tet. 'Snailblazer', the second track on the EP, takes a much darker turn, with a chugging, EBM-esque feel. Full-bodied and complete with obscured vocals, this is the kind of track to pull out your bag when it's time to really get stuck in. Review: The Sound Migration label takes another trip back in to the CATT articles to explore the proto-trance and early bleep techno sound they were pushing from 1988-1991. Another five essential gems from the modestly sized catalogue get an airing here, kicking off with Confidential's haunting 'Amphibious Carbine' followed by the boxy pressure of Exocet's 'Nitrogen'. This is astounding stuff throughout, not least the freak-zone trip of Holy Ghost's 'Walking On Air', which sounds like the common denominator between Ibiza and Goa in their nascent days as party destinations. Don't sleep on the clattering funk of Exocet's 'Overdose' either, a seriously snappy groover with all kinds of oddball sampling going on.

Review: Deep house doesn't get any better than when it's from scene-pioneer Chez Damier. The US legend has been finding the most sensuous and emotive sounds for decades, not only as a producer but also as a label boss. His House of Chez label cooks up some more goodness here with his own collab with H2H opening up with mystic Middle Eastern melodies drifting over smooth beats. Review: Kyle Hall makes another entry into the already fine discography of his Forget The Clock label with another fine four tracker. His usual raw style pervades from the off with the well swung drums and bumping kicks of the title track soon to get you in the groove. His signature diffuse synth work is what brings warmth and soul to the dusty drums of 'Track 2' while 'Sarabi' ups the pace with a more hurried groove and pent up sense of party joy. A second bonus track closes proceedings, with 'Track 4' layering up low slung drums and meandering cosmic leads to heady effect.

Review: Kyle Hall treats us to a new and special pressing of his standout Equanimity EP which was last reissued back in 2020. This one comes on limited edition translucent teal vinyl and was initially put out to mark the ten-year anniversary of Detroit native Hall's own Wild Oats label. In that decade he has established it as one of his hometown's finest for dusty deep house explorations. The four tracks on it are just that with a whimsical melody over bumpy beats on the opener, then more zoned-out beats on '4wrd Motion' and glitchy kicks and hits on 'No More Moon'. Last of all is the star-gazing cosmic house of 'Ghosten 4 A 2nd X'. A timeless EP for sure.

This is a sharply focused two track release, with the A-side playing on a time-honoured love of martial arts cinema through its speech samples about the titular 'Viperstyle'. 'Escape On The Midnight Express' gets two tidy tech house versions with distinct flavours which should appeal to those who like their 4/4 grooves tripped-out and headsy. Review: Composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Frank Harris has enjoyed a long and varied career. During the 1980s, he was one of the world's most esteemed Synclavier synthesiser programmers, and also recorded extensively with singer-songwriter Maria Marquez - though it took until 2019 for much of that music to be released (on the album Echoes). This 12" boasts fresh reworks of tracks from that set. Frankie Deluxe handles side A, first delivering a deliciously slow-burn revision of 'Loveroom' - all sparse, undulating synth melodies, whispers of percussion and beautiful lead vocals - before offering up a seductively summery shuffle through the samba-seeped shuffle of 'Down By The Rio'. That track is twice more remixed on the flip. First Frakas supplies a tactile, deep Balearic nu-disco tweak, before Julian Dyne offers up a deep, dubbed-out, slow-motion house take.

Review: If the Balearic Islands are a physical place, then Balearic music is certainly the foremost concept in its adjacent ideaspace - it seems as long as Balearic music exists, there can be no further cultural exports from the Archipelago. Have A Nice Day are a mysterious collective of DJs and producers inspired by said sonic throughline, and they're determined to tap into it for as long as it exists. They describe their music as 'Baleariche', a fusion of Balearic and Italo disco with a touch of kosmische and psychedelia. Review: Have A Nice Day is an alias of an unknown producer or producers as well as being the name of their own fledgling label, H.A.N.D.. Balearische Grammophon 02 is its third release and it features two cuts which are unreleased and secret versions of an 80s anthem from Germany, namely 'Brother Louie.' They beef up the original with all new dancefloor clout but in very different ways. The b-side in particular is a weird and wonderful cut with narcotic overtones and beguiling rhythms. An absolute must for those DJs who want to wonk out a club.

Review: In a move many might have believed not possible, Bobby Krlic makes a welcome return as The Haxan Cloak with this monumental single. It's no less than ten years since we last heard from the industrial-tinged electronica maverick on his Excavation album, but now he's back with a bruising new piece called 'N/Y' which pops up on both sides of this clear 12" platter. It's a high pressure release full of jackhammer percussion and noise blasts, plus some sirens thrown in for good measure. Holding true to the industrial tradition, it's entirely engineered as a blast of intensity, and Krlic has considerable talent to render such an approach in a powerful, provocative way.

Review: As Bobby Krlic's project The Haxan Cloak makes a return after some ten years of silence with the 'N/Y' single, it's a fine time to track back and catch up on some of his small but perfectly formed catalogue. Observatory originally came out in limited quantities in 2010, and now it sees a repress to stave off the sharks and allow more people to experience this engrossing short form release. The title track is a strong melodic mantra riding a densely packed organ-like figure into oblivion, allowing the resonant frequencies and harmonics to become the dynamic movement in the track with an expert patience. 'Honfour (Temple)' is a subtler, more shapeshifting piece with gorgeous blooms of ambience and submerged pulses that lead you deeper into Krlic's evocative sound world.

Review: Savage Garden's Darren Hayes returned from the wilderness in 2022 after a hiatus of almost ten years. During that time, he tried his hand at stand up comedy, kept a social media presence in the form of shared videos featuring him bursting into song, and evidently spent a fair amount of time recharging. After all, you don't make albums with the energy of Homosexual, the comeback piece, if you're running on empty.

Review: Strap in for this one because Head Front Panel is here to rattle you to your foundations with another uncompromising EP of groove-driven techno. This is proudly linear, functional tackle but it comes with great sound designs and high-class ideas. 'Loom' has punchy rums stacked on top of one another and fizzing walls of rusty synth that break only to reveal chopped up vocal snatches. 'Momentum' is heavy and hard, with banging drums and more caustic synths and that continues through the relentless 'Running Man' and macho techno funk of 'Disc.'

Review: Head High is a ling running alias of Polish techno producer Shed. It's for his more loopy and emotional sounds and has always been popular with DJs. This new EP is a mighty fine return that offers three track sou steamy, summer ready action for sunset and sundown sessions. 'Break Away' has fizzing synth lines and dusty drums with well placed vocals up top. 'Push It!' comes on much stronger, with harder drums and more prickly percussion but another fine vocal that adds that touch of emotion. Last of all is 'Chamber No 6', another dark cut with tightly programmed drums loops, scratching hits and a menacing bassline backlit by diffuse chords.

Review: Heart People is a new project from long-time Australian underground operative Ryan Grieve and Rachel Rutt, and on this record for Pinchy & Friends they sail towards Balearic tones aplenty across four dream state cuts for sun-down, sun-up or any hour in between. 'In Your Eyes' breezes along on the smoothest of rhythm sections, draped in the lilt of acoustic guitar and guided by Ruth's heavenly voice. 'Adriatica' is a pitch-perfect cast adrift into cascading synths, flute motifs and reverb-soaked bongos, all the better to float away to. 'Secrets' explores 80s drum machine meditation and sampledelia, while 'Angel' takes on a more mysterious tone with a hint of Cocteau Twins woven in for good measure.

Review: Ron Henderson released only one album with his Choice of Colour band, and that was Soul Junction in 1976. The North Carolina-based singer-songwriter has become an object of cult admiration over the years which is what might explain how an original of that album can often go for upwards of $800 at auctions. The 2020 P-Vine reissue soon sold out and included an extra single from 1983, 'Gemini Lady.' It is that which now gets pressed up to its own 7". It comes with the same label design as the original with a special jacket to make it even more of a collector's item.

Review: Darker Than Wax welcomes back Malik Hendricks for a new EP that was recorded in Brooklyn in 2020 and 2021 by the American-born, Lisbon-based producer. And it marks something of a shift in his musical journey as he moves away from the sample-heavy sound he is known for and towards more organic grooves with hints of Midwest funk and techno. There is an electro flavour to the opener, sleazy ghetto house flourish to 'Fiyahverkx' and broken beat minimalism to 'Totem.' Review: HI LO has had some huge collabs with Filth On Acid boss Reinier Zonneveld and now makes a step up to Adam Beyer's mighty Drumcode with more of his maximal techno sounds. 'Crescendo' is a raw slammer with hard edge and raw drums hitting hard beneath incendiary hi-hats and flashes of bright synth and twisted acid. It's a main room weapon of the highest order. 'Open Your Mind' is more ragged and unhinged, it's stark hits and bulky broken techno drums beneath a raucous mix of percussion and saw-tooth synths. No messing with these two.

Review: The legendary Razor-N-Tape keeps up its always busy release schedule here with a debut offering from Hiatt dB. The San Antonio born artist offers up a sizzling six track mini album that joins the dots between the worlds of funk, house, acid, breaks, disco and boogie. It's a steamy affair, too, with 'When The Night Is Right' soon making its mark and luring you to make some sensuous moves. There is loose limbed funk on the title track, spaced out boogie beats on 'First On The Floor' and low slung slow motion house sleaze on 'Take The Low Roads Home' amongst other gems.

Review: Fledgling but already well-formed French label Endangered Musique mints a new series here, Easy Trax Part 1, with four 90s-tinged house cuts. The Sexy Mix of Higher Level's 'Sax Maniac' opens up with loopy sax lines and throwback drums in a tune that is easy to love. There is a more sweaty, New Jersey style to Native Groove's pumping and dubby 'I Need A Man' before Side Kick's 'I Got The Hots' comes in two forms. The Hot dub loops a recognisable melodic pattern over chunky but deep drums and the Hot mix layers up bright, neon-hued chord stabs over an unresolved groove.

Review: This is one of those man-old 45rpms that can still command eye wateringly high prices on second-hand sales markets. It was a real favourite of the rare soul scene thanks to be popularised by Mark "Butch" Dobson at the start of his DJ adventures. It has remained true illusive over the years but this reissue from Soul Direction Origins changes all that. On the a-side is Hank Hodge & The J Notes Band's 'Eye for An Eye' which is an upbeat soul burner with big horn arrangements and plenty of interaction between the male lead and female chorus on the backing. On the flipside is 'Since You Said Goodbye', a slow-burning and heart-melting sentimental soul lament.

Review: Japan's Kickin' series compiles rarities recorded for TK Records in the late 1970s, the latest example of which comes in the form of this dual-tracked gem by American disco singer Jeanette Holloway. Homing in on an extended project that has included the likes of KC & The Sunshine Band, Timmy Thomas, and George McCrae over the years, Holloway's contribution is incredibly bright, with the titular 'I Won't Be Around' boasting an impressive array of guitars, harmonies, and production crunch. 'You Got To Give A Little' is a far lesser known B-side, not yet known to the public but certainly one of equal potential to beguile.

Review: Excellent, blindingly techy new offering from Machinedrum & Holly. The pair channel glossy, post-internet trap, early 00s Coki-esque dubstep skwelch and all the best parts of contemporary d&b. 'VSN 122' comes with all the rushy euphoria of the best pop-adjacent, accessible dance music records, but maintains its edge with shards of unorthodox sound design and texture- take the wild bowed cymbal-sounding wubs in 'Novaform' or the unhinged FM action and distant vocal hollering on 'Luminae' for instance. Over the course of a mere six tracks, Machinedrum & Holly weave a complex tapestry of club affect, from the languid spa-hop of 'Blueshift' to the overtly poppy rush of 'Hide Sun'. Forward!

Review: Despite having been on a journey in music that has lasted two decades, Honeydrop shows with this very welcome return to the scene that they very much have still got the skills to pay the bills. This most classy of EPs opens with 'That's What', a dreamy minimal house cut with exquisite pads bringing the cosmic feels. 'Can You Please' has a nice skip to the kicks and molten chord work then 'Do What' picks up the pace a little but never sacrifices the gorgeous, deft synth details that make these tunes such works of art. 'Lapadub' closes down in more marching but still serene tech house fashion. An incredible return for Honeydrop.

Review: Belgian label Elypsia continues its love affair with Kenny Hopper on this third volume of his Detroit Orbiter series. He is a new school Motor City talent with a sound that pays homage to the legendary Mid-Western musical hotbed. 'One Journey Outbox' is a high-speed electro workout with nutty basslines and free-form hits that cannot fail to cut the club loose. There's more physicality to the kinetic kicks of 'Elliptical Orbit' while 'Wishing Pon A Star' goes for a deeper and more introspective sound with delicate melodies. 'Soul Journey' closes out with a totally different look - deep rolling house and beautiful synth melodies over jazzy chords.

Review: Japan-based producer Hoshina Anniversary has already served up two top EPs for the Amsterdam based MUSAR Recordings crew, and now is back with a third that is just as good. As always this producer fuses contemporary sound designs and machine made techno sounds with rational instruments. It's a beguiling mix that means opener 'Guru Guru' kick off with a dark and potent baseline line and exotic melodies. 'Banri' is a gritty and twisted cut with gurgling synth lines and dark waves of synth drones that keep you guessing then 'Kaga' is one for loopy and hypnotic after party wig outs. 'Usagi' closes with unhinged melodies and fluttering snares over silky beats.

Review: The upcoming second solo studio album by US singer-songwriter and guitarist Brittany Howard (of Alabama Shakes fame), What Now follows up Jaime and its Reimagined edition, striking out with a fierce, "truest and bluest", nigh "brutal" lyricism, in which Howard addresses the titular question - "what now?" - and how today's society might respond. Written, of course, during the height of the pandemic, when such doubts were excised and up in the air (and more so than usual), the album's sonic aesthetic spans full-bodied funk, psychedelic chord progressions, and a powerful bombast. The overall answer sounds to be: move through it; surrender to "the now", gracefully.

Review: Anyone who has taken a deep dive into the East Coast house scene of the 90s will know the name John Howard. He was one of the real Gs of the era with a sound full of groove, soul, jazzy rhythms and fresh breaks. Repeat now starts a new series of releases that focus on that time and pull together some of his best beats. These have gone on to be big inspirations for generations of DJs to come all over the world and they still bang some 25 odd years down the line. 'Sciabolic' is a loose limbed and raw workout while 'Diapella' is more experimental and dark.

Review: It's hard not to be a fan of Jay Tripwire if you like tech house. The man turns out a consistently excellent line in spaced out sounds that are masterful reduced to only their most core components. Here he steps up to work with John Howard on a pair of superb new tracks for Repeat. The opener, 'Shiva Needs Some Lovin,' is a mix of stiff drum work and coarse snares with more loose and fluid synths. The duality makes for an enticing groove that takes you off amongst the stars. 'Boom Boom' then gets more down the business with hefty, raw drums landing heavy under reverberating leads as drunken bass falls about the mix.

Review: Voodoos & Taboos unveil their anticipated new LPs series with Human Aventura, the debut self-titled album from the promising Corsican producer. An unusual dance release modelling itself on electro and chiptune, but finding itself somewhere in the hidden interstice between them, this is a self-described "libidinous Mediterranean spoken disco" album, giving elements of Telex or Kraftwerk, albeit with a progressive bent best heard on pithy cuts 'Solid State Scouter'. Not one to be missed for those who like it intelligent, fidgety and FMmy.

Review: The Ranges label has really found its, yep, range over the course of its first dozen or so relies and this 15th is another gem. It is a return to the imprint for Hydergine who once again draws on a rich vein of dub techno history and reworks it into his own new rhythms and arrangements. The opener is a classically infused sound to get things going and after 'Entangle' there are more broken beat patterns to 'Spectrum' and a pulsing sense of edgy undercurrent to 'Introspection.' 'Perception' is the most sparse of the lot and also gets a Resoe remix that has deft synths darting about the mix.

Review: Hypnosis (more often than not written 'Hipnosis') enjoyed success in their native Italy in the early-to-mid 1980s, initially with club-focused Italo-disco interpretations of then contemporary cuts by fellow European synth-fanciers. Having debuted in 1983 with a cover of Vangelis's 'Pulstar', they followed it up by taking on Jean-Michel Jarre's global smash 'Oxygene'. Here it gets a deserved reissue, allowing a new generation to revel in its alluring mixture of arpeggio-style bass, rubbery bass guitar licks, cascading electronics, triple-time drums and electrofunk inspired translations of Jarre's famous, insatiably hooky melody. Also included is original B-side 'Borpaz', a deliciously spacey, delay-laden original composition that includes some seriously funky synth licks and a proper early morning groove.
