Review: Marc Leclair may have become best known for his Akufen work in the 00s, but his Horror Inc work is surely some of his finest. Taking the slinky micro house he pioneered and turning it to more cinematic purposes, his last album under the name was 2013's incredible Briefly Eternal on Perlon. Now he revives the project with this expansive suite for Ohm Hourani's Anoma label, which is appropriately tipped towards jazzy subtleties within machine music. With each release, Horror Inc becomes a deeper, subtler concern, and so it goes on this record where the springy, swung patterns are offset by half-hidden melodic murmurs and a generous dose of mystery as Leclair takes his conceptual project further into the realms of playfully spooky micro jazz.

Review: Brainfeeder looks back to Japanese hybridist Hakushi Hasegawa's first album Air Ni Ni here and reissues it on limited grey marbled vinyl. Although on the surface it might be thought of as pop, get in between the beats and you will find a challenging record that fused everything from bubblegum pop to breakcore, prog jazz to video games and much more besides. The record first came in 2019 and remains astonishingly diverse and new in the way it mashes up traditional genre boundaries and draws on alt-rock. Fans of label head Flying Lotus are sure to love it as is anyone who heard it first tie round.

Review: An Evening With The Devil is regarded as one of the Tribe Records label's finest ever releases - an unrestrained free jazz expression from Wendell Harrison that is packed with forward-thinking grooves. The Detroit reedman was always in a class of one and he showed it here with a record so heavy it was way ahead of its time. Now though it's regarded as a classic with trumpet from Marcus Belgrave, Charles Eubanks on keyboards, Ike Daney on drums, and Will Austin on bass. There are also some spoken word passages from the Black Messengers making this a jewel of the jazz underground.

Review: Matthew Halsall's trajectory as a leading light of spiritual jazz in the UK continues apace with his stellar new album An Ever Changing View. Restlessly prolific and drawing from a seemingly bottomless well of ideas, he approached this record as a reset of sorts, affording himself freedom to explore sound in all aspects. The end result remains true to his velvet-smooth approach, delivering understated instrumental flourishes around delicate grooves to make for the gentlest of access points for the labyrinthe halls of jazz, but as ever there's much nuance and complexity bedded into these delicate compositions to yield new discoveries over repeated listens.

Review: Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe might sound like the elaborate name of a facetious solo artist, but it's actually a later alias of progressive rock supergroup Yes, after they resolved to stop going by the name Yes. Yes, indeed, this is Yes in reunited form, having packed in the former name with a resounding No. Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford, Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe return for this later-career, nine-track smorgasbord, which shows off the group's collaborative-compositional complexity, virtuosic musicianship and belty vocals. Everything from heroic theme music to instrumental ecstatic dances feature here, with the opener potentially especially appealing to DJs.

Review: House Of Love's classic album Babe Rainbow gets a full reissue that wholly replicates the original version from 1992 on Fontana. The band initially formed in 1986 in South London and features vocalist Guy Chadwick, lead guitarist Terry Bickers, bassist Chris Groothuizen and drummer Pete Evans. Early on they were inspired by The Jesus And Mary Chain and soon found critical acclaim and commercial success with their self-titled debut becoming an instant indie-disco hit. Babe Rainbow came after lots of heavy touring and promotion saw Bickers leave the group to form Levitation and be replaced by Simon Walker. It features notable singles such as 'The Girl With The Loneliest Eyes' and live favourite 'Crush Me.'

Review: Not the first film to be named Babylon and to feature an incredible soundtrack (we'll leave the sleuthing up to you), Justin Hurwitz's soundtrack to Hollywood's latest hedonic product is a perfect match to the movie's 1920s LA setting. Opulence, narcissism and decadence - being a rather fashionable set of subject matters - are among its most pressing themes, and this is most readily portrayed by Hurwitz's liberal use of golden-timbred brasses, big strings, and velvety razzamatazzing claps, on cuts like the aptly-titled 'Champagne' and 'Wild Child'.

Review: In 2018, three-time Grammy Award-winning violinist Hilary Hahn returned to classical label-behemoth Deutsche Grammophon (her usual) for an official album of interpretations of J.S. Review: Within a few moments of a famous film score - or at least one that made an impact on you - scenes and even lines not heard in years come flooding back. And the recollections of the atmosphere in the cinema as the opening credits began. When James Cameron's blockbuster Titanic first hit big screens it was a very different time for movies, and theatres, one that seems remarkably simple compared with today's multi-platform, pre-release buy-in chaos. Simply put, the flick was seen by pretty much everyone, which is rarely the case now, and as such the typically emotive soundtrack, particularly the orchestral sections, will have made an impact on everyone of and over a certain age. First returning us to the glamour and wonder of that ill-fated ship, then the drama and desperation that defined its demise, and the death of an all-too-short love, listening now makes it clear how crucial the tunes and songs were. From the unbridled joy of 'An Irish Party in Third Class', to the somber reflection of 'Nearer My God To Thee', it's the stuff of epics.
